I normally stay away from examples of people who stop something in the line of duty when they are being paid to carry a gun for this thread, but this example of a school resource officer should not be passed up. A good guy with a gun in a sitting duck zone.... I mean gun free zone stopped an intruder who may have been about to cause a school shooting.

Officer shoots armed former student at Illinois high school
The Associated PressThu 4:27 AM, May 17, 2018

Police cars appear outside Dixon High School Wednesday, May 16, 2018 in Dixon, Ill. Officials say a police officer has shot and wounded a gunman at a northern Illinois high school. The Dixon city manager Danny Langloss says police confronted a former male student with a gun on school property about 8 a.m. Wednesday. Langloss says the gunman shot at an officer who returned fire and hit him. He is in custody with what Langloss described as non-life-threatening injuries. (Rachel Rogers/Sauk Valley Media via AP)

DIXON, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois State Police has identified the man who authorities say fired shots outside a high school auditorium as seniors met for a graduation rehearsal.

Matthew A. Milby was charged late Wednesday with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated discharge at a school employee and aggravated discharge at a school building. He is being held in lieu of $2 million bond.

Police say the 19-year-old fired shots at Dixon High School. A school resource officer confronted the shooter, who ran from the school and shot at the officer. The officer returned fire, striking the suspect.

Authorities say the shooter suffered non-life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized. The officer was uninjured.

Authorities originally said the man was not a student. However, Superintendent Margo Empen told Sauk Valley Media the suspect was not expelled, did not drop out and was eligible to graduate with his class.

Empen said she could not provide further details because of school privacy laws.

Restaurant worker acquitted of manslaughter in 2016 shooting in Gentilly

A state judge acquitted a man charged with manslaughter for a fatal shooting in a Gentilly townhouse after a one-day trial on Thursday.

Criminal District Court Judge Benedict Willard sided with Henry Wilson, who said that he shot in self defense after 26-year-old Billy Dukes pulled a gun on him in January 2016.

Wilson, a former bartender at Brennan’s Restaurant who now works at two other restaurants, was overcome with emotion after the verdict, said his defense attorney, Kevin Boshea.

“Henry Wilson’s biggest crime was that he’s a hardworking man who works two jobs in restaurants and he’s a good fella. And the bottom line is he came home wanting to sleep,” Boshea said. “This guy, who was unfortunately quite intoxicated, just wouldn’t leave the man alone.”

Police said officers were called to the 4300 block of Sybil Street early on the morning of Jan. 12, 2016. Inside the residence they found Dukes, who had been shot three times. Wilson stayed on the scene and surrendered himself for an interview.

Wilson told police in the interrogation room that he had been sleeping at the townhouse, a relative’s. Early that morning he walked home to the residence after working a 12-hour shift and tried to fall asleep on the sofa, he said.

Orleans judge grants steep bail reduction for man accused in fatal shooting
“When I get in that house, all I’m trying to do is lay down,” Wilson said.

But according to Wilson, Dukes, who was in the kitchen, would not leave him alone. Wilson’s cousin, Kirk Patterson, intervened several times to calm the situation down.

"There was some humbug about a $5 debt from a year earlier," Boshea said after the trial.

Dukes ultimately came at Wilson with a gun, Wilson said.

“For a dude to just pulla gun out me on like that?” Wilson said in his interview with police. “I’m like man, what is wrong with him.”

Wilson said that after Dukes pulled out the gun, he responded by grabbing a weapon of his own and firing. Wilson said he did not know whether the first shot hit Dukes. He said he fired again after Dukes racked his gun.

Toxicology tests showed that Dukes had Ativan, Oxycodone and hydrocodone in his system at the time of his death.

The state called an expert from the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office as well as Homicide Detective Maggie McCourt. Wilson testified in his own defense. The defense also called Patterson.

Wilson faced up to 40 years in prison if convicted as charged.

Boshea said he made the unusual decision to request a bench trial due to the complex elements of a self-defense claim.

“This case had some technical legal concepts that I thought were better addressed to an expert in the law – i.e. a judge – as opposed to a jury,” Boshea said. “I could not afford that level of confusion in this case.”

The District Attorney’s Office did not immediately comment.

WACO, Texas (KWTX) An armed man who forced his way into an apartment early Friday in Waco was shot twice by a resident, police say.

The man was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center, police said.

Officers responded just before 12:15 a.m. Friday to the Enclave at the Stadium apartments in the1600 block of South Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.

Investigators said residents of an apartment in the complex heard a knock on the door, just before midnight.

Not knowing who the person outside was, one of the residents grabbed his pistol, police said.

Minutes later, a second person came to the door and when residents opened it, the armed man forced his way inside where the resident with the pistol was sitting on the couch.

“The suspect swung the pistol at the resident several times before the now armed resident on the couch opened fire, striking the suspect twice,” Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said

Police said the resident was questioned and released.

The name of the suspect has not been released.

Hours earlier, police responded to a shooting in the 3400 block of Pewitt Drive, where a man was shot multiple times.

St. Louis man who knocked over nun at mall gets 15-year term in murder case

CLAYTON • A St. Louis man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in the 2015 death of a fellow burglar who was fatally shot by a homeowner.

Jordan L. Holmes, 21, was sentenced Thursday by St. Louis County Circuit Judge Joseph L. Walsh III. Holmes pleaded guilty to several counts including second degree murder (or felony murder), armed criminal action and burglary.

Police said Holmes and Tramell Day, 19, tried to break into a home in the 6100 block of Rocket Drive in north St. Louis County in December 2015. The homeowner was inside and grabbed his gun, and killed Day in a shootout.

The law allows a murder charge against someone participating in a felony in which anyone is killed, even if the suspect didn’t pull the trigger.

Holmes also pleaded guilty to charges of bowling over an 87-year-old nun after he shoplifted and fled a store at the South County Center mall. Sentences for those charges will run concurently to Holmes' 15-year term for the murder case.

Holmes lived in the 2800 block of Howard Street in St. Louis. Day lived in the 3100 block of Lafayette Avenue in St. Louis.

Rabid fox attacks three people in Oswego County
    SANDY CREEK. N.Y. —
When George Stevens walked outside into his backyard last Wednesday, he felt something bite him in the back of the leg. When he turned around, he was eye-to-eye with an aggressive gray fox.

"After he bit me in the thigh he came back and latched on to my forearm. I picked my arm up in the air, and he's hanging off my arm, so I grabbed him by the middle of the back and ripped him loose," Stevens said.

His wife began to come outside when she heard the struggle, but Stevens yelled for her to stay inside the house.

"Scared the daylights out of me. I fell down at one point just trying to get my bearings about me. Then I'm just trying to defend myself and trying to get inside the house away from it," Stevens said.

Once he got back inside the fox made its way to his neighbor's house where it attacked another man. Those neighbors believe the fox was living under a nearby shed before it began to act strange.

Eventually, the fox attacked a third man who shot the animal.

Days later, the Oswego County Health Department revealed the fox had tested positive for rabies.

Stevens and his neighbor are being treated with a series of shots.

"Two in each side and one in each arm. After that, it's a total of four single shots over a period of time. Every three or four days you go for another one," he said.

It's a painful reminder to keep an eye out for animals acting out of the ordinary.

"When they're approaching you and then especially attacking like that, or just acting strange, you have to be cautious because it very well could have rabies," Stevens said.

To report a possible exposure, call the Health Department weekdays at 315-349-3564. In an emergency during evenings, weekends, or holidays, call the department’s answering service at 315-341-0086.

HOYTSVILLE, Utah, May 18, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A Hoytsville man was arrested Friday for domestic abuse after deputies say he assaulted several family members.

What stopped the attack was the suspect’s father shooting his son in the leg, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

Derrick N. Christenson, 26, was treated at an area hospital for a bullet wound in the lower leg, then was arrested by SCSO and transported to the Summit County Jail, a statement from the sheriff’s office says.

    Christenson was booked on:

    Child abuse, a second-degree felony
    Aggravated assault, a third-degree felony
Two counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child, a third-degree felony
Simple assault — domestic violence, a class B misdemeanor
Two counts of criminal mischief, a class B misdemeanor
    Intoxication, a class C misdemeanor
Christenson’s father has not yet been charged. The case will be sent to the Summit County Attorney’s Office for additional review, the SCSO statement says.
