Homeowner holds accused burglar, Jorge Bruno Lopes, at gunpoint in PSL

    http://www.tcpalm.com/story/news/cri...psl/940213001/
PORT ST. LUCIE — An accused burglar was arrested after a homeowner on Sunday reported holding the man at gunpoint, a police report states.

Jorge Bruno Lopes, 42, was jailed on charges of burglary to an unoccupied structure and criminal mischief after the incident at a residence in the 600 block of Northwest Fairhaven Drive.

MORE: Man charged with 6 counts of vehicle burglary in Port St. Lucie

The 44-year-old homeowner told investigators he saw a light in his shed and the door was ajar. He first thought it was a family member and called out, but got no response.

He got suspicious that a person was breaking in his shed, and went back inside and got his Glock 9mm handgun.

“He then approached the shed, with his firearm at his side, and the defendant came out with a small handheld power drill above his head,” a police report states.

The homeowner told police the man yelled at him, and the homeowner reported he thought he was going to be attacked. The homeowner pointed his handgun at the man, later identified as Lopes, and told him to get on the ground.

"Don't shoot me," Lopes is quoted as saying.

Police found a tape measure, coins, WD-40 and a charger that belonged to the homeowner, the report states.

Lopes told police he burglarized the shed, but other details of his conversation with police weren’t released.

The home where the incident occurred is near Northwest Bayshore Boulevard and Northwest Selvitz Road, east of Florida’s Turnpike. Lopes' listed address is about five miles away from the home where the incident occurred.

Master Sgt. Frank Sabol, police spokesman, on Monday said calling 911 is always suggested, but everyone has a right to defend themselves and their property.

“We do not see that the homeowner did anything wrong,” Sabol said.

Police reported Lopes pried open the shed door, perhaps with the drill, and damaged the door.

Lopes, of the 200 block of Southwest Pagoda Terrace in Port St. Lucie, was held Monday in the St. Lucie County jail on $10,000 bail, a jail official said.

After wife screams, Garner homeowner grabs gun and nabs intruder
By David Hurst Published: December 11, 2017, 4:46 pm Updated: December 11, 2017, 4:50 pm

GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) — A surprise weekend visitor to a Garner home is now behind bars after the homeowner came face-to-face with the intruder and nearly shot him

The homeowner, Dan Frye, says he was asleep around 11:30 p.m. Sunday at his home on Spanish Moss Lane when he heard his wife scream downstairs.

Frye says he grabbed his pistol and went downstairs. Frye’s wife told him there was a man trying to get into the house.

Frye says he went into his kitchen and found the man was already inside his home after the suspect apparently walked through one of the back doors, which was unlocked at the time.

Frye told the intruder to leave or he was going to shoot him.

“I threatened to shoot him once and he didn’t leave and I threatened him again and he left,” said Frye.

The suspect, who was later identified as 43-year-old Kristopher Ostrander, sat in his car until deputies arrived and arrested him.

Ostrander turns out to live down the road from Frye and was spotted on Frye’s surveillance cameras prior to the break-in.

The surveillance video appears to show Ostrander wandering around the house barefoot with a dog on a leash. At times he’s wearing sunglasses and halfway through the video the dog disappears.

Frye says the video indicates the suspect may not have known where he was or what he was doing.

Frye says it makes him glad he made the right choice in a split-second decision he never thought he would have to make.

“I gave him a chance to live. I gave him a live-free card,” said Frye. “I hope he takes advantage of it.”

Ostrander was taken into custody late Sunday night and was held a $50,000 bond. As of Monday afternoon, he had bonded out of jail.

Police: Man shoots, chokes suspect who broke into apartment

    https://www.journalscene.com/crime/p...5221d8bdd.html
    By Jenna-Ley Harrison jharrison@journalscene.com Dec 11, 2017 Updated 5 hrs ago (0)
Summerville police said a man shot a burglar, identified as his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, then choked him during a struggle Sunday night at the Waters Edge Apartments on Dorchester Road.

The suspect, David Austin Rutledge, 22, remains in the hospital and faces a charge of first-degree burglary, according to a report.

Rutledge is accused of breaking into the the apartment while the man was in bed, the man told police. He said in the report he heard a loud banging at the door, and his girlfriend told him it was her ex-boyfriend, according to the report.

The suspect then kicked in the door and charged at the man who used a gun next to him in bed to shoot the suspect once in the arm, the man told police in the report.

Rutledge jumped on top of the man, and the two engaged in a struggle, with the man choking Rutledge until he stopped fighting and sat down on the couch, the report stated.

During a search of the suspect's vehicle, police said they located two dogs inside as well as a loaded shotgun on the front seat.

The resident suffered an abrasion to his head, a cut to the knee and bruise on his chest but refused medical treatment, the report said.

Police said they do not yet have a date or time for Rutledge's bond hearing.

Teen shoots threatening mountain lion while deer hunting

December 11, 2017 By David Strege
A 17-year-old boy was deer hunting with his family on private property along the Sioux River near Akron, Iowa, when he heard rustling in the bushes.

Jake Altena decided to investigate and discovered an uprooted tree. A moment later, a mountain lion emerged from under the fallen timber and threatened him, according to the Sioux City Journal and Des Moines Register.

"I was about 15 feet away and a mountain lion poked his head out and it was looking at me dead in the eyes," Altena told the Journal. "I immediately pulled my gun on him. I was pretty scared at the moment. When I had him in my sights, he kind of made a quick jump at me and I instantly pulled the trigger.

"That was one hell of an adrenaline rush."

The fatal shot hit the mountain lion in the shoulder. It was the sixth mountain lion killed in Iowa, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

"I tell you something cool the DNR told me; he said that the mountain lion is one of two female mountain lions to be shot in Iowa in the last 100 years," Altena told the Journal. "Only two of them and mine was one of the two."

The Altena family had immediately alerted the DNR to ask what to do next. A representative met up with them and took the carcass with the intention of conducting tests but that never happened so it was returned to the family.

"I'm going to take it home and have it mounted," Altena told the Journal.

Since mountain lions aren't protected in Iowa, it was legal to shoot it. And if it weren't legal, officials likely would have ruled it self-defense.

Not surprisingly, the story created an uproar on the Sioux City Journal's Facebook page with a mixture of those who say the boy should have just scared the mountain lion away and those who defended the boy's actions.

San Marcos Woman Wakes Up to Man Staring at Her — Again\
    Chaitanya Cherukuri
On December 3, a woman in San Marcos allegedly woke up to find an intruder staring at her as she slept — for the third time.

According to the San Marcos Police Department, the woman woke up at around 5:30 a.m. to find 24-year-old Chaitanya Cherukuri crouching at the foot of her bed, watching her while she slept. When she saw Cherukuri, she pointed a taser at him and yelled at her roommate to call the police. She held him at taser-point until police arrived to arrest him. He was charged with burglary of habitation (breaking into a home with intent to commit a felony, theft, or assault), stalking, and voyeurism.

This is the third time the woman has woken up to Cherukuri watching her, according to police. Police found a key on his key ring matching the victim’s apartment, although it is unclear how he obtained it.

Cherukuri's charges for breaking into homes stem back to March 2016, when he was first charged with burglary of habitation, plus tampering with physical evidence in San Marcos.

He was also charged with burglary of habitation in October, and burglary of habitation and stalking in November, according to his arrest warrant. It is unclear if these charges involve the woman who reported him to police.

Cherukuri was released from Hays County Jail on December 6, after posting a $140,000 bond.

Man was acting in self-defense when he shot, killed man with knife

    http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/inde...f-defense.html
FLINT, MI - Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has ruled that a homeowner who shot and killed a man earlier this month outside his home was acting in self-defense.

Police responded at 1:14 a.m. on Nov. 30 to reports of a person who was shot at a residence in the 1900 block of Joliet Street.

Leyton said Ollie Lee Drummer, 59, was allegedly armed with a knife and breaking into a vehicle parked outside the residence.

"The homeowner told police that he was coming at him with the knife in his hands at the time the homeowner shot him," Leyton said.

Drummer was taken to Hurley Medical Center where he later died.

Leyton said the homeowner was acting in self-defense when he shot Drummer and there will be no criminal charges.
