WDFW investigators assure rancher shooting wolf was lawful
By DON JENKINS Capital PressMay 21, 2019
An Okanogan County rancher who shot and killed a wolf as it approached three newborn calves was promptly cleared by Washington Fish and Wildlife investigators, according to records released Tuesday.

The rancher shot the young male wolf the morning of April 29. The reports, released in response to a records request by the Capital Press, were redacted to withhold the names of the rancher and investigators, as well as the exact location.

The shooting occurred east of Highway 97, where wolves are not federally protected, but are a state protected species. The unjustified killing of a state endangered animal is a gross misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $5,000 fine.

“I could tell (the rancher) was very tense, and I assured (him) that we were present to document what had occurred, and we were there to advocate for his personal and property rights as much as the rights of wildlife,” according to one investigator’s report.

Another investigator noted that only five days earlier, Fish and Wildlife Director Kelly Susewind had issued a memo directing department employees to “maintain public safety as a priority.”

The investigator said he “wanted to make prompt decisions to alleviate any fear the family had.”

“I informed (the rancher and his wife) that it was a justified act and did not want them to stress about a delayed finding or decision,” he wrote.

Washington law allows livestock owners to kill without a permit one wolf that is attacking their domestic animals. The law does not apply to the western two-thirds of Washington, where wolves are protected by the federal Endangered Species Act.

The rancher told investigators he was home with two young children when he saw an animal near the house moving toward the fenced pasture between 8 and 9 a.m.

Three calves born the night before were near the fence. The rancher said he keeps newborn calves in the pasture closest to his house to protect them from predators.

The rancher said he wasn’t sure whether it was a wolf or coyote and yelled to scare it away. The animal continued toward the pasture. The rancher fired the only round in his rifle.

The bullet went over one cow, the rancher said. An investigator noted the bullet also would have passed a children’s jungle gym in the backyard.

Investigators found an entrance wound near the wolf’s heart and lungs.

The distance from the home’s back porch to the carcass was approximately 280 yards, according to measurements taken by the Fish and Wildlife investigators. The carcass was 56 yards from the pasture’s fence.

“Once in with the cattle, it may be difficult to shoot the animal actively attacking a calf,” one investigator wrote. “No charges were filed against the RP. Case closed.”

Fish and Wildlife investigators noted that the family had reported wolves around their ranch last fall and photographed one with a trail camera. A driver delivering a package reported seeing two pups on the property last fall.

CHICAGO — A homeowner shot a home invader in the butt in Uptown early Friday, police said.

A 42-year-old man broke into a residence in the 800 block of West Lakeside Place through a rear sliding door about 12:10 a.m. Friday, according to the Chicago Police Department.

A homeowner, 39, confronted the man and shot him in the buttocks, police said. The homeowner was not injured and has a valid FOID card. No one else was inside the residence at the time.

Suspect shot, arrested following burglary call in Arkansas

SHERWOOD, Ark.- A Little Rock man faces a burglary charge in Sherwood after police say he went into a home armed with a knife just before getting shot by the homeowner.

Officers arrested Waymon Calloway after getting treated at the hospital, according to police. His injuries were not life-threatening.

The incident happened on Tuesday night at a home on Community Cove, according to an arrest report.

"The suspect was gone when we got there," Sgt. Drew Edwards says.

Edwards says Calloway left the scene shortly after getting shot and took himself to a nearby hospital.

Police believe Calloway knew someone inside the home and did not force his way in.

"It wasn't like a random home invasion, if you will," Sgt. Edwards says.

Calloway has since been booked and has bonded out of the Pulaski County Jail on a burglary charge, according to jail records.

The crime has some neighbors shaken up, despite living in a place that they otherwise describe as safe.

"We've got police cars that come down through here two or three times a day," Vicki LaSpina says, who lives just a few blocks away from where it happened.

"It makes me more aware. You know, I want to keep my eye out, always," says LaSpina.

Police: Argyle-area homeowner shoots, kills man trying to break in

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A man attempting to break into a house in the Pilgrims Trace neighborhood near Argyle was shot and killed early Friday afternoon by the homeowner, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Officers responded about 12:40 p.m. to Dover Cliff Drive North near Pilgrims Trace Drive after the homeowner called 911 to report he had just shot a man who was trying to break into his house.

Police said the man who was shot, described as being between 30 to 40 years old, was found dead on the sidewalk.

Homicide Sgt. Steve Rudlaff said there's no indication the homeowner and the man knew each other.

The homeowner is being questioned and is cooperating, Rudlaff said.

No one else was at the home at the time.

People who live in the neighborhood said the community is typically quiet, so seeing crime scene tape and police everywhere was concerning.

"There’s not a lot of crime," said resident Ashley Robinson. "You don’t see the cops unless there’s firefighters or ambulance trucks. This was, like, a shocker."

The Sheriff's Office said it is checking to see whether any other homes in the neighborhood were burglarized.

Police: Man who shot at group of juveniles in St. Paul said he was defending himself

Officers found the man standing on the south side of East Mount Airy Street with his hands in the air, the spokesperson said. The man reportedly told officers he had a gun in the holster attached to the front of his shorts. Officers were then able to recover the handgun, and the man was able to provide a permit-to-carry and identification.

The spokesperson said the man told officers he had been returning to his home and was driving a newly-purchased vehicle. After he parked it on Winter Street and exited, he said he began walking east toward his residence. A light-colored sedan allegedly drove past him, stopped, then backed up.

According to the spokesperson, the man said two or three males got out and walked toward him. He alleged they were yelling at him, so he ran across Jackson Street and they chased him. That's when he reportedly turned to face them and fired two rounds. He said the males then ran back to their sedan, got in and left the area.

The man then said he called 911 to report the incident.

At around the same time, the department spokesperson said officers were called to Regions Hospital after a report of a male who had arrived with a gunshot wound.

Officers were told the 15-year-old had been brought to the hospital by three of his juvenile, male friends. The spokesperson said officers spoke to the three, who were described as being reluctant to share information about the incident. But, the spokesperson said one of the males alleged the group had been walking down the street when they were shot by someone driving by in a black sedan.

The spokesperson said the juvenile allegedly could not describe the vehicle, nor where the group was when the incident occurred. The 15-year-old, who was being treated for what was described as a small laceration near his chin, also allegedly said the group was shot at by someone in a black sedan.

No arrests have yet been made and the matter remains under investigation, the spokesperson said.

Man shot attacker, injured himself during assault by date's ex in Westwego, cops say
BY RAMON ANTONIO VARGAS | rvargas@theadvocate.com
    Published May 24, 2019 at 2:33 pm | Updated May 24, 2019 at 3:13 pm

A man dropping a woman off at her house in Westwego following a date shot her ex-boyfriend after he attacked him inside his truck – and he inadvertently shot himself as well during the melee Thursday night, police said.

Tristan Sarah Sr., 23, faces counts of aggravated burglary and aggravated battery, Westwego Police Department Lt. Eric Orlando said Friday. The man who fired the gun during the incident is considered the victim and is not accused of a crime, Orlando added.

According to Orlando, the victim – also 23 – had gone to the 400 block of Vine Drive to drop off his date and was sitting in his truck talking with her when Sarah pulled the driver’s door open and hit the victim in the back of the head.

Sarah, the woman’s ex and the mother of his child, allegedly began fighting with the victim inside the truck. Fearing that he would be killed, the victim grabbed a pistol from between the driver’s seat and the truck’s center console and fired while struggling with Sarah, Orlando said.

The victim fired the gun but ended up shooting himself in one of his legs and a forearm. He then corrected his aim, fired again and hit Sarah in the right leg, causing the alleged intruder to retreat to a nearby driveway, Orlando said.

First responders later arrived and took both the victim as well as Sarah to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, according to Orlando.

Investigators interviewed the victim and his date, who both identified Sarah as the aggressor in the incident, Orlando said. Orlando said police will jail him upon his discharge from the hospital.

Sarah could face prison time if eventually convicted.

Man who was shot charged with vehicular assault
    Shooting near Diamond deemed justified

By Jeff Lehr | jlehr@joplinglobe.com3 hrs ago
NEOSHO, Mo. — The Newton County prosecutor has charged a Carthage man who was shot during an altercation Saturday at a residence near Diamond with two counts of vehicular assault.

Bradley S. Williams, 47, was shot in an upper arm, his jaw and nose with a .12-gauge shotgun during a confrontation with Jason Johnson, 34, and Verlin Wallis, 31, both of Carthage, at 21691 Route J, about three miles east of Diamond.

Williams was flown by medical helicopter to Mercy Hospital Springfield following the shooting. He was reported to be in serious condition at the time, although his wounds were not deemed life-threatening.

Williams was charged Friday with two counts of first-degree assault with a vehicle following an investigation of the incident by the Newton County Sheriff's Department. A probable-cause affidavit indicates that investigators determined that Johnson shot Williams in self-defense while Williams was trying to hit Johnson and Wallis with a stolen car that he was driving.

The affidavit indicates that the altercation began when Williams showed up at Johnson's residence in Carthage in the company of another man, Justin Thomas, and urinated on the door of Johnson's residence before entering his home without his permission and issuing threats "to kill everyone," including Johnson's children, over a purported theft of data from his cellphone.

Williams told Johnson that he was a Joplin Honky and demanded that Johnson take him to his roommate Wallis, who Williams believed was involved with Johnson in the theft of his data.

Johnson told him that he did not have enough gas to take him to the residence near Diamond where Wallis was working and that he would have to go to his wife's place of employment to get the money needed for gas, according to the affidavit. Williams then followed Johnson to his wife's place of work, where Lisa Johnson would not let her husband leave without her.

According to the affidavit, Williams and Thomas followed the couple to a convenience store where they got gas and Lisa Johnson managed to tell the clerk that the men lurking outside in the other vehicle were "harassing" them. She also managed to call 911 and ask police to check on the welfare of their children left behind at their house. She also called a neighbor to go to their house and get their children.

When the Johnsons got to the residence near Diamond with Williams and Thomas following them, Lisa Johnson jumped out of the their truck and ran toward the house. As Wallis came out of the residence, Williams drove straight at him and tried to run him over, both the Johnsons and Wallis told investigators.

Investigators found acceleration marks in the grass of the yard that corroborated their accounts, according to the affidavit. They also found marks on a tree that corroborated Justin Johnson's account that Williams struck a tree at least twice with the car trying to run them down. He told investigators that he ran to his truck and grabbed his shotgun at that point and shot at the car. He told deputies that he was unsure if he fired the gun two or three times before Williams finally sped away and they called 911.

Wallis also was unsure how many shots were fired by Johnson. He told investigators that at one point, Williams also ran into a barbed wire fence trying to run them down and the front license plate of the vehicle became entangled in the fence and came off as he backed up. The affidavit states that the plate was found in the barbed wire and corresponding damage noted on the car.

Thomas, who was arrested on outstanding warrants in the aftermath, told sheriff's investigators that Williams got locked out of his phone and became convinced that Wallis or Johnson stole his data. Thomas denied that Williams was trying to run them down with the vehicle. According to the affidavit, he claimed they were just happened to be in front of the car as they were trying to turn around.

Thomas told investigators that after Williams got shot, they drove to the nearest residence to try to get help but no one would help them. He switched seats with Williams at that point and drove to another residence trying to get help and ended up calling 911 himself on his phone. Thomas told investigators that he "freaked out" at that point and took off on his own.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper located and detained Thomas less than a mile from where Williams had been left in the vehicle, which had been reported stolen in Carthage.

Hatchet-wielding thief backs down when store clerk pulls out gun - but firearm costs employee his job

Oregon authorities are seeking a would-be thief who was armed with a hatchet when he tried to rob a convenience store, only to flee when the clerk drew a gun and called 911.

However, the clerk's quick thinking cost him his job, with the president of Plain Pantry in Oak Grove explaining to local station KOIN-TV that the chain has a zero-tolerance policy for weapons.

He said employees are trained to de-escalate robbery situations to avoid injury, according to the station.

The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office on Friday released surveillance video of the incident which took place April 28 at the store, seeking tips in identifying the suspect who fled empty-handed and without the 12-inch hatchet.

“We’d like to reunite you with the hatchet you left behind after the clerk responded with a handgun and a 911 call and you fled the scene,” Sgt. Marcus Mendoza said in a news release.

Mendoza said the suspect placed the hatchet on the counter and reportedly telling the clerk, “I’m sorry. I’ll leave."

"The suspect got on his knees with his hands in the air, then abruptly fled the store," he said.
