A Kokomo resident sits in jail on a felony burglary charge after police say a husband and wife caught the man in the middle of a home invasion, chased him down and held the suspect at gunpoint until officers arrived.

Marcus Woolever, 27, is being held at the Howard County Jail on a $20,000 bond following the incident, which involved a red pull-behind wagon loaded with goods, ready to be stolen, inside a home in the 1000 block of East Vaile Avenue.

Instead of making off with new speakers and archery supplies, however, Woolever found himself staring down a gun as neighbors yelled at him to comply with the homeowner’s orders.

At approximately 9:11 p.m. Sunday, Kokomo Police Department officers responded to the area of South Crystal Street and East Vaile Avenue on a report of a burglary in process, according to probable cause affidavit released Wednesday.

Dispatchers told officers that the homeowner and his wife had arrived at a house in the 1100 block of East Vaile Avenue and found a man in the home, robbing the place, and “now had the male at gunpoint.” Officers were quickly directed to an area behind the 600 block of Crystal Street.

There, they found Woolever lying on the ground, wearing a ball cap and a backpack, while the homeowner ensured he wouldn’t flee by pulling a weapon. The type of gun used by the homeowner is not specified in court documents.

The homeowner and his wife’s names were redacted from police reports, and they could not be contacted by the Tribune.

The couple, which is in the process of remodeling the home so a family member can move in, had been told previously by the family member that someone may have been in the house.

Then, on Sunday, they arrived to mow the yard and check the home; as the husband put his key in the door, his wife yelled that someone was coming out of a side window.

She gave chase while the husband went around the other side of the house and caught up with Woolever in the backyard of a home in the 600 block of Crystal Street, around 360 feet from the East Vaile Avenue site.

Woolever, trapped in the backyard but still refusing to comply with the homeowner’s orders, was eventually yelled down by neighbors who came out of their homes to also order the suspect onto the ground.

Eventually, Woolever, who said he had been walking all day and only wanted a place to sit down and use the restroom, knelt to the ground while the homeowner held him at gunpoint until officers arrived.

Woolever later told police that he had knocked on the front door and asked for a response before entering through the unlocked door into a home he believed was unoccupied. He said he then got scared when the homeowner arrived and took off through the side window.

But a search of the East Vaile Avenue home found that plastic covering over the window had been cut. In conjunction, a tire had been propped against the house, allowing someone to climb through the window, the same one that Woolever had been seeing fleeing out of.

Inside the house, next to the door, was a red pull-behind wagon, according to court documents. Inside the wagon were speakers, archery supplies and two jackets. Neither the wagon nor the items were previously in that location, the homeowner told police.

In Woolever’s backpack were pipe-cutters, three knives, handgun grips, a .22 caliber magazine, a Compaq laptop, gloves, a Rapala filter and a flashlight. Each of the items were removed from the home.

Also located in the backpack were a crow bar, red bolt cutters, a cell phone, keys and phone chargers. Woolever was also found with a folding knife, belonging to the homeowner, in his front shirt pocket.

Woolever is scheduled to have an initial hearing on Aug. 24 in Howard Superior Court 4.

Police: Off-duty deputy shoots dog after attack in Colonie
    Lauren Linder
COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) - An off-duty deputy fired his weapon at a dog after his own animal and another dog were attacked, police said.

The incident took place around 7 p.m. Thursday on Prince Court in Colonie.

According to Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple, an off-duty deputy was walking his service K9 and was accompanied by a neighbor and his dog. On their walk, a pit bull charged out of a house and attacked the neighbor’s dog.

The deputy was able to get the dog off, but it then latched onto his K9 and would not let go. That’s when the deputy fired two shots at the pit bull. One shot struck the dog, which caused it to release its bite. A Colonie police officer took the dog to a veterinarian, and the K9 suffered a torn ear.

The K9 also received veterinary care.

"I heard the neighbors yelling for their dog, you know, to come, and then that's when I heard the two shots," Sherman Conlan said.

The sheriff said the pit bull was unregistered, and the deputy used his licensed, off-duty firearm.

    The incident remains under investigation.

Intruder shot after exchanging gunfire with homeowner, deputies say
    Friday, August 17th 2018, 11:03 am EDT
    COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) -
A Columbus County homeowner reportedly shot and injured a man attempting to enter his residence late Thursday night.

According to a spokeswoman with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office, the homeowner told deputies that one of his neighbors tried to enter his home on Tillman Avenue — about 12 miles outside of Tabor City — around 11:20 p.m.

The neighbor, identified as 28-year-old Edward Deron Riggins of Tillman Avenue, allegedly started firing gunshots into the home.

The homeowner returned fire from inside the home, eventually hitting Riggins.

Riggins was taken by private vehicle to a Horry County, SC hospital for treatment. When he was released from the hospital, authorities took him into custody and booked him into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Conway, SC where he remains jailed as of Friday morning.

The spokeswoman for the sheriff's office was unable to provide the specific charges that Riggins is facing.

No one inside the home was injured during the shooting.

“I could have killed him for $10,” East Side Store owner fights back against armed robber
    Posted 12:28 AM, August 18, 2018, by msullivanfox59
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- A dramatic armed robbery is caught on camera in the East Side. A store owner is held at gun point before turning the tables on the would-be thief.

It happened at Decor Furniture on the corner of 10th street and Bosart Avenue. In the video, the suspect pulls a gun on store owner Doyle Stinson.

“I know you’ve got more money than that because this is a business,” Stinson said the man told him, “Once he gets me back to the back room that was a mistake. I go back here, I hit my silent alarm emergency button.”

Stinson said he could tell the gun aimed at his back wasn't loaded, so he reached for his own weapon in the back room.

“I knew when he pulled the hammer back on the automatic weapon there wasn’t a bullet in the chamber," Stinson said, "I know the sound.”

He took aim, as the video showed the suspect frantically fleeing the store. Stinson said his gun was loaded. He said he didn't pull the trigger because he saw a boy in front of his store, and was concerned a stray bullet would hit him.

“If you’re shooting a 40 caliber, it’s going to go through him, through this merchandise, through that window, and what's beyond that window,” Stinson said, “He’s got a lot more to live than me. That’s true, that’s a little boy there.”

Instead, the store owner called 911, and chased after him.

"I jumped in a vehicle before he got in his getaway car. Followed him down 11th and Arlington," Stinson said.

A fellow store owner had pulled up when Stinson ran out, and let him in the car. Police say the two chased after the suspect until it became too dangerous.

Stinson said he plans to put a bullet stopper in front of his window in case an incident happens again.

As for the suspect, he made off with only $10. Police need your help tracking him down. The getaway car is believed to be a dark blue Chevy Trailblazer with an Indiana "In God We Trust" license plate.

Shots were fired after an unknown person went into a home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire after getting an invitation on social media and going to the wrong address, police say.

Portsmouth Police responded after hearing gunshots in the area of Islington Street, as a resident on Summer Street reported an unknown man entered their home.

The caller said she and her partner found the man parked in a car on the street, leading to her partner firing a pistol at the car as it fled from the area.

We had noi dea what we were dealing with," Brenna Cavanaugh told Boston 25 News in an exclusive interview. "We feared for our lives."

Cavanaugh said the intruder had gotten into his car, backed into a pole across the street and then sped towards her and her partner.

"We just saw a car coming at us at a very high rate of speed, and that's not something you can fend off with a fist fight." "The whole thing's pretty upsetting, it could have ended in a tragedy."

Portsmouth Police say the person went into the home after getting an invite to an event on social media, but didn't have the right address.

"He got a text over social media to meet up with some friends and unfortunately he was just at the wrong house," Portsmouth Police said. "A lot of scared people and some frayed nerves, but other than that, no one was harmed by any of the bullets fired."

Nobody was injured during the altercation, and no charges have been filed at this point, police say.

Police say the dangerous situation could've ended much worse, and Cavanaugh agreed.

However, she said she doesn't regret the couple's decision to defend themselves.

"In an instant, you need to make a life or death decision," Cavanaugh said. "He made the right decision, and I would hope he would do it again because we didn’t know who was behind that wheel."

Portsmouth Police are investigating the incident, and are asking anyone with information to contact them at

One woman arrested after suspected burglary and shots fired
    Millville, Calif. —

On Friday, at 6:43 p.m., Shasta County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 26380 Highway 44 in the Millville area for a burglary in progress.

As deputies were responding to the location, they learned shots had been fired.

Deputies arrived and contacted three victims, Javier Alvarado, 24, Luis Alvarado, 50, and Reginald Ceehorne, 72. Deputies checked the area and learned the suspects had already left the area on foot.

Deputies learned that Luis Alvarado owned the property, which consists of several acres and an unoccupied residence.

According to the sheriff's office, Luis Alvarado found that a pickup had driven into the property without permission.

Luis Alvarado, his adult son, Javier Alvarado and a neighbor, Reginald Ceehorne then approached the property to investigate.

They encountered a male and female adult, unknown to them, attempting to steal property.

The female got into a pickup and started driving around the property and then accelerated the pickup towards where the three victims were standing.

The female stopped the pickup and pointed a handgun toward where the three victims were standing. The female fired one shot, which did not strike anyone. Ceehorne, who was armed, shot at the pickup in self-defense. The female then exited the pickup and ran away with the male.

A deputy and his K-9 partner, Jax, located a female about a half mile away that matched the description of the female suspect. Jax was used as a deterrent to keep the female from escaping.

The female was later identified by all three victims as the same female who had shot the pistol and was driving the pickup.

The female was identified as Katheryn Marie Nickell, 50, from Redding. Nickell was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, assault with a firearm, burglary, felony vandalism, possession of burglary tools and conspiracy.

Nickell was transported to the Shasta County Jail where she was booked into custody. Nickell’s bail is set at $50,000.

A North Texas man is recovering in a hospital after he was shot by a Good Samaritan who claimed the man was beating and stabbing his 16-month-old child to death on Sunday afternoon, Lewisville police reported.

The 16-month-old child sustained multiple severe injuries and had to be rushed to a hospital at 12:41 p.m. Sunday, Lewisville police stated in a news release. The child later died.

The child, who has not been identified at this time, is believed to be the son of the suspect. The child’s mother was at work when the incident occurred, police said.

When officers responded to a report of a stabbing at the Oak Forrest Apartments located at 1531 S. State Highway 121 witnesses told the officers that a man was beating and stabbing a child in the courtyard near an apartment building, police said.

There were also others who told officers that shots had been fired at the same location. The responding officers found a man at the location who had been shot in the leg and a small child that had sustained multiple severe injuries, police said.

The small child and the man were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The child was later pronounced deceased and the medical staff determined the child’s death was due to the injuries he sustained during an assault, police said.

Several witnesses at the crime scene told detectives that they saw a man beating and stabbing a small child.

One of the witnesses heard screams, then grabbed a gun and fired three rounds with one of the shots striking the father in the leg one time.

“That was what effectively ended the assault on the child,” Lewisville police Captain Jesse Hunter said.

The man, who also has not been identified by police at this time, was placed under arrest following treatment for his gunshot wound. There had not been any previous calls or reports to police at the apartment location, according to Lewisville Police spokesman Jesse Hunter.

There had not been any prior reports made by the child’s family involving Child Protective Services, Hunter added.

Police said the witness that fired the shot that stopped the attack will not face criminal charges.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
