Caught on camera: Man looking in Jacksonville home's windows, homeowner scares him off with a gun

by: Danielle Avitable, Action News Jax Updated: Sep 20, 2017 - 11:33 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A man was caught on surveillance video moments before a Southside homeowner said that man was about to break into his house.

The video showed a man going through mail and peeping in windows while Michael Grubb said he was home.

"Kind of freaked me out a little bit knowing there was someone peeking in my house trying to find a way in," Grubb said.

Grubb said he thinks the man was trying to break into his home because he also went around the side of the home to look into other windows.

"If you look in the window, you can see all the stuff we have, the TV and all the nice stuff. I imagine he was trying to get something," Grubb said.

Grubb said he grabbed his gun and that’s when the man is seen dashing off.

A woman told Action News Jax off-camera this same guy tried forcing his way into her home and she called police.

In a nearby neighborhood, there have been several recent breaks-ins. A woman, who didn’t to be identified, said her door was kicked in two days ago.

"I was just so upset, I called 911," the woman said.

She said a neighbor spotted a white pickup truck in her driveway around the time it happened.

"I just feel so violated, because they opened all my drawers to my dresser and threw things around," the woman said.

The woman whose door was kicked in said money, a TV and a camera were stolen from her home.

Action News Jax used the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office’s crime mapping tool and found that there have been 11 burglaries and two robberies within a 2-mile radius of the Windy Hill neighborhood in the past month.

Grubb thinks it could be the same guy behind the other break-ins.

"If not him, maybe the people he hangs out with or something," Grubb said.

This is an update on post 475. The girl defended herself, but is being suspended from work for 2 weeks for doing so.

Gas Station Worker Tired Of Being Sitting Duck, Shoots Robbery Suspect
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — (KOAT/CNN) — The Circle K clerk who shot an accused armed robber, says she was suspended for two weeks. The shooting happened Monday inside the store.

Jennifer Wertz said she’s upset. She claims robberies happen all the time and yet workers are told they can’t defend themselves.
Wertz said she had her gun with her Monday because she was supposed to work until 10 p.m. She said she feels uncomfortable walking to her car at night.

Wertz put her gun in her pocket after she heard that another nearby convenience store was just robbed. She said she was not behind the counter when a man barged in with a gun.

“We are not to chase or provoke. We are just supposed to stand there and give them what they want and they leave,” she said.

“So why didn’t you do that yesterday?” Cruz asked.

“I’m sick and tired of being a sitting duck,” Wertz said. “He pointed the gun at my face, I grabbed my gun from my pocket, I cocked it and I shot.”

Police released the suspect’s name Tuesday afternoon. They said 23-year-old Ferron Mendez was shot in the torso, but is expected to survive. The APD said it will charge him once he’s released from the hospital.

It appears he does not have prior arrests in New Mexico.

KOAT reached out to Circle K management about the incident, but they declined to comment.

4 for today. I stay away from police shootings in the line of duty for this thread, but this guy is retired. Interesting that it took a retired cop to be an armed citizen using a firearm to end an attack making a difference in New Jersey. Shame that New Jersey does not respect the Constitution for most citizens.

Authorities: Retired Cop Shoots, Wounds Robbery Suspect

The retired officer's name was not released. Authorities have not said if he was seriously injured.

Jones was charged with robbery. It's not known if he's retained an attorney.

One shot after attempted burglary in Bridgeport
By Tara O'Neill Updated 10:52 pm, Thursday, September 21, 2017

BRIDGEPORT — An attempted burglary took a turn when a burglar was shot by the victim, police said.
The burglar was found shot near the intersection of Barnum Avenue and Central Avenue around 5:20 p.m., police spokesman Av Harris said. The attempted burglary took place in the 900 block of Kossuth Street, Harris said, about one mile from where one burglar was found shot.

Harris said initial reports came back that the victim of the attempted burglary was shot, but that has since been clarified. He said the “victim (of the attempted burglary) shot one of the burglars.”
The burglar that was shot was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, Harris said. He said a second burglar was apprehended and is in police custody.
No further information was available Thursday evening because of the ongoing investigation.

2 today. This is a messed up story and an interesting read. 4 on 1. Girlfriend stabbing people. Man with a gun firing it to end the situation. If doesn't say "be ready to protect yourself, anything can happen at any time". I don't know what does.

    http://idahostatejournal.com/members...34a8cd937.html

Video sheds new light on Pocatello stabbing, shooting incident

POCATELLO — A video reviewed by the Idaho State Journal shows the brutal assault on a local couple this past weekend that ended with gunshots and left two victims beaten and two of the apparent attackers stabbed.

The video is from a West Center Street business' security camera and was provided to the Journal this week by a source who wanted to make sure the truth was reported about the early Saturday morning incident.

The video shows that at approximately 3 a.m. Saturday the couple and an unidentified individual were standing in an alleyway in the 300 block of West Center Street.

A black Subaru is then seen pulling in front of the trio and four men exit the vehicle.

The video shows one of the Subaru's four occupants quickly emerging from the rear passenger seat and immediately punching the man with the woman.

A struggle ensues and both the apparent attacker and male victim stumble in front of the car where two of the other men from the vehicle join the tussle. The unidentified man who was with the couple then briefly disappears from the camera's view but reappears entering a nearby building.

It’s unclear at this point what exactly is going on between the three men and male victim in front of the car because the vehicle's lights obscure the video. But as the struggle continues the fourth man — the car's driver — joins the fray.

The video then shows the male victim’s girlfriend reach for something in her purse and run toward the group of four men who the camera shows at this point are attacking her boyfriend. It’s unclear if the woman stabs any of the men at this point but one of the apparent attackers can be heard shouting “knife.” The man from the car's rear seat who initiated the attack on the male victim and the man who was driving the vehicle wrestle the woman to the ground.

After a brief struggle, the apparent attacker from the backseat removes his shirt and states he has been stabbed and to get the knife from the woman. The video then shows the driver of the vehicle — who was also stabbed — continuing to wrestle with the woman when the unidentified individual who entered the nearby building returns holding a handgun.

Pointing the gun in the direction of one apparent attacker, the man fires one shot. He then pivots and points to the man who removed his shirt and fires another shot. All of the men from the vehicle except the driver flee on foot. No one was wounded by either of the shots fired.

The video next shows the male victim running over to the Subaru and apparently turning the vehicle off. The unidentified man with the handgun then apparently orders the driver of the vehicle to get on the ground.

After several minutes, the driver enters the vehicle and drives away. The male victim, his girlfriend and the unidentified man enter a nearby building and the video ends.

The couple spoke to the Journal on the condition of anonymity because they're concerned that they're going to be again attacked by the four men.

The female victim said she stabbed the two men with a 5-inch self-defense knife that she had in her purse. She said she pulled out the knife in an attempt to defend her boyfriend and she didn't stab the men until they wrestled her to the ground and were on top of her.

Police said they know who the four apparent attackers are and have interviewed them but no one has been taken into custody or arrested in the case.

The male victim said the attack occurred about 15 minutes after the man from the rear passenger seat of the Subaru had accused them in the alleyway of breaking into local businesses and/or apartments.

“The man said he had video footage of people breaking into businesses or his apartment or something and that it looked exactly like us,” the male victim said. “We told him we had no idea what he was talking about and then my girlfriend pulled her cellphone out to start recording it.”

The male victim said the man slapped the phone out of his girlfriend’s hand and then slapped the skateboard the male victim was carrying out of his hands.

The male victim said he then open-hand slapped the attacker, causing him to flee.

None of this earlier incident was caught on the video presented to the Journal.

A short time later the apparent attacker returned in the Subaru with three of his friends.

“Four guys jumped out of the car and (one) said I was the (expletive) that jumped his friend,” the male victim said. “I got punched in the jaw and the neck and the next thing I know two gunshots sound off.”

Pocatello police arrived soon afterward and began investigating the incident. The woman and her boyfriend were interviewed by police before being driven via private vehicle to Portneuf Medical Center. She was treated and released for a black eye and a severely bruised wrist that is now in a brace. Her boyfriend — the male victim — was treated and released for a dislocated shoulder and bruises around his neck.

Police said on Tuesday that they are aware of the video recording and are in the process of reviewing the material and interviewing witnesses and suspects.

The male victim said he did not know the four men in the Subaru but had seen them around the First National Bar on West Center Street before. The couple had been at the bar earlier in the evening.

The two individuals who were stabbed eventually arrived at PMC via private vehicle. One of them was treated and released but the other man remains at the hospital, police said.

    He is expected to survive.

Police did say that there is no threat to public safety as a result of the incident.

The couple credits the man who fired the pistol with possibly saving their lives.

"If not for his gunfire, they would not have stopped (beating us)," the female victim told the Journal on Saturday. "They would have pried the knife out of my hands and beat us until we were nothing."

She said the incident has left her traumatized.

The male victim said he is afraid his attackers may seek retribution and the altercation was so intense that he has decided to carry a Taser and a knife for self defense.

He said he thinks the men in the Subaru were looking for a fight and he and his girlfriend were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

“This same thing could have happened to anybody,” the male victim said.

Bishop PD: Girls fatally shot man in self-defense after he sexually assaulted them

Bishop Police Chief Billy Durbin on Friday said the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old man earlier this month was done in self-defense by two girls he was suspected of sexually assaulting.

It was Sept. 7 when officers responded to a call about a shooting in the 500 block of E. Joyce Drive in Bishop. Police found the body of Evan Frost, who had two bullet wounds to the head and one in the arm. Durbin on Friday said Frost had been shot with a .22-caliber handgun by two female juveniles who Frost sexually assaulted.

The shooting, he said, was in self-defense. He declined to specify whether one or both of the girls had shot Frost, or their ages, in order to protect the girls' identities. The home in which Frost was shot was not his residence, police have said.

Police also found four pounds of marijuana and a growing operations inside the home, complete with dehumidifier, fertilizer and filtration systems, Durbin said. Arrests connected to that operation are still possible, he said, as the investigation is ongoing.

The Texas Rangers are assisting with the investigation, Durbin said.

UPDATE: Man shot to death while attempting to rob Hammond residents

HAMMOND — A man died Friday morning after he was shot while apparently attempting to rob several people in a home in the 6400 block of Woodward Avenue, police said.

The man, who has not yet been identified, reportedly entered the home's front door just before 7:30 a.m. and told several people he knew of a safe inside and intended to rob them, police Lt. Steve Kellogg said.

Witnesses told police they believed the man had a gun and threatened them with a firearm, Kellogg said.

The man forced three people to a room in the basement, Kellogg said. As he led the three out from the basement and into the kitchen, a fourth person — who had been in another room — confronted the man and shot him multiple times, police said. The person told police he kept the handgun for self-defense.

The people in the home called police and are cooperating, Kellogg said.

Despite children's bicycles in the front yard, there were no children in the home at the time of the attempted robbery and shooting, police said.

The four people in the home were taken in for questioning, and the case remains under investigation, police said. One of them admitted to shooting the alleged intruder, Kellogg said.

Crime scene tape surrounded the home as dogs barked and a sprinkler in the front yard clicked.

Police initially contacted Maywood Elementary School officials to advise them to keep the children inside of the school, but then notified the school that the area was secure, Kellogg said in a news release.

City Councilman Anthony Higgs watched from across the street and described seeing the four people leaving in police vehicles about 9 a.m.

Higgs said he went to the scene after receiving a call from a concerned resident.

"Community safety is a top priority," he said.

Higgs briefly left, but returned later and spoke with Kellogg.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sgt. Daniel Bates at 219-852-2979.

UPDATED: One dead, one injured as Lemay homeowner shoots intruders, police say

A homeowner shot and killed one attempted intruder and wounded another in a shooting early Friday in Lemay, police said.

A 19-year-old and a 14-year-old attempting to break into a residence in the 300 block of Shadwell Drive, at the Jefferson Townhomes complex south of Jefferson Barracks, were “confronted by the homeowner and shot,” police said.

Officers from the St. Louis County Police Department’s South County Precinct responded to the 911 call for help at roughly 6:45 a.m. today.
Pronounced dead at the scene was Demarcus Boxley, 19, who had been shot at least once. Boxley lived in the 3100 block of Nebraska Avenue in St. Louis, 63118.
Soon after the call off Shadwell was dispatched to officers, South County Precinct officers responded to the 2600 block of Elk Hill for a 14-year-old male who was suffering from at least one gunshot wound whom they first identified as a victim, but later classified as a suspect.
That suspect ran to that address after being shot in the 300 block of Shadwell. Both addresses are connected to the initial shooting off Shadwell, police said.

The teenager was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive. He was in stable condition as of Friday evening, police said.

Police do not provide the names or cities of juvenile suspects or victims.

The investigation into the shootings is ongoing and will be presented to county prosecutors when it concludes, police added.

The incident is under investigation by the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons. Detectives believe they have all persons of interest in custody.
Contact the county Police Department at (636) 529-8210 or CrimeStoppers at (866) 371-TIPS (8477) if you have any information regarding the incident.

PPD: Woman shoots ex-boyfriend in self-defense as he tries to break into apartment

A 32-year-old man is facing burglary and battery charges — and is recovering from a gunshot wound — after police say he broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment Friday.

Henry Johnson was treated at a local hospital after his ex-girlfriend shot him as he allegedly broke into her home.

Pensacola Police Department spokesman Mike Wood said the woman was inside her home at Pensacola Village Apartments on East Fairfield Drive at about 5:30 a.m. when Johnson broke through the front door.

The woman shot Johnson once in the leg, and police arrived soon after, according to PPD. Police questioned Johnson soon after, and Wood said the female won't face any charges for the incident.

Johnson is being held at the Escambia County Jail without bond, according to jail records.
