Resident catches alleged burglar in act, holds suspect at gunpoint until deputy arrives

    Mon, 07/16/2018 - 2:24pm

    zfitzgerald@daily-review.com
Fortunate circumstances allowed a Patterson area man to catch a suspect allegedly breaking into his truck and hold the suspect at gunpoint until authorities arrived.

A juvenile male, 14, of Patterson, was arrested at 4:05 a.m. Sunday in connection with the incident on charges of vehicle burglary, possession of a stolen firearm, illegal carrying of a weapon ungovernable juvenile, curfew violation, resisting an officer by false information, resisting by force and unlawful possession of tobacco by a person under 18, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Scott Anslum said in a news release.

Harris DeHart, who lives on Daphine Street outside of the Patterson city limits, said he was getting ready to leave for Puerto Rico early Sunday morning on a business trip. His wife was awake around 3 a.m. watching TV and saw green lights start blinking on the monitor for the family’s security camera system, which the family had just gotten about a month earlier. The family decided to get the camera system after learning of recent burglaries occurring in the area.

His wife saw movement on the screen and noticed people breaking into DeHart's truck. She woke up DeHart and called 911.

“I grabbed my gun, and I went and checked on my oldest son to make sure it wasn’t him outside. He was in his room sleeping,” DeHart said.

After checking on his son, DeHart went to the front door. His wife disarmed the alarm system, and DeHart ran out the front door from behind the suspect and caught him in the truck, he said.

“I put my gun on him and made him get to the ground,” DeHart said. “I asked him if he had any weapons or anything. He said no, which that was a lie.”

Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Detective Whytley Jones confirmed that the suspect was in possession of a .22-caliber revolver at the time of his arrest.

When DeHart first approached the suspect and told him to get on the ground, “he kind of took off running towards me,” DeHart said.

“I have a laser on my pistol. And when I put my laser on him, then he went down to the ground. I don’t know if he couldn’t see my pistol at first, but it didn’t take him long to get on the ground when he’d seen that laser,” DeHart said.

DeHart continued to hold the suspect at gunpoint until a sheriff’s deputy arrived. When the suspect saw the sheriff’s vehicle arrive, he started reaching into his pocket and tried to take a gun out of his pocket and throw it, DeHart said.

The gun the suspect had was allegedly stolen from one of DeHart’s neighbors, DeHart said.

“I kind of just held him down, held his arms and everything. And the cop ran over and gave me a hand,” he said.

DeHart said another suspect allegedly got away.

“We didn’t even realize that there was a second person at first, not until after when the guy told me that there was another guy with him,” DeHart said.

Jones said the incident is still under investigation but didn’t have any information on a second suspect.

DeHart believes he left his truck unlocked because he had been in and out of the vehicle getting ready to leave at 4 a.m. Sunday to go to the airport to fly to Puerto Rico.

“From the time they (the suspects) got in there and the time I got out my house (was) probably within a minute, maybe a minute and a half. It was really quick,” he said.

“I thank God that he didn’t actually have the pistol in his hand,” DeHart said. “It wouldn’t have been the same outcome for sure.”

A sheriff’s news release stated that a deputy patrolling the area of Patterson responded to Daphine Street for a vehicle burglary in progress. The deputy made contact with the victim and the juvenile suspect outside of the home. The deputy learned that the victim caught the juvenile male inside of his vehicle, the release said.

Through the investigation, the deputy found evidence that the juvenile was in possession of a stolen firearm and tobacco. While placing the juvenile in handcuffs, the juvenile pulled away forcefully and made attempts to provide a false name and date of birth, the sheriff's release stated. The juvenile was released to his guardian pending juvenile court proceedings

RALEIGH, NC — The 21-year-old man found dead over the weekend in Raleigh's Northshore community was apparently a suspect in a convenience store robbery and was shot by an employee. The body of Derrick Malik Wiley was found outside on the 4200 block of Waterbury Road late Saturday, police said.

Police later said Wiley, who was shot in the leg, was suspected in a robbery at a Mini Mart on the 5500 block of Old Wake Forest Road. The robbery apparently happened the same evening he was shot.

Police say a homeowner shot and killed a man who tried to break into his home on Monday night.

The homeowner told officers he heard a noise at the house on West Houston Street, near Northwest 20th Street, just before 11 p.m.

He says he grabbed his gun and went to check out the noise when he shot an intruder. The suspect died at the scene.

Police spent the night talking to several other people in the area who might have witnessed something.

As of Tuesday morning, investigators said it did not appear the homeowner would be facing any charges, but the incident remained under investigation.

One man shot, two people stabbed in Sydney home invasion

A FIGHT over women’s clothing left a Sydney man stabbed multiple times during a home invasion before he staggered into his front yard with a rifle and shot a fleeing bikie, NSW Police say.

The incident at the Bringelly property on Monday night was “terrifying”, according to detectives, who allege a 32-year-old man and 28-year-old woman — both wearing balaclavas and armed with a knife — forced their way inside.

The anti-bikie squad joined the investigation as the female intruder was charged with attempted murder on Tuesday afternoon, while her alleged Rebels accomplice remained in hospital under police guard.

Vince Datillo and another man, both 44, were inside the Mersey Road home in Sydney’s outer west on Monday night, along with a 38-year-old woman, when an argument broke out.

The female intruder lived at the property until recently, Acting Superintendent Paul Albury told reporters, and the two groups were fighting over clothes and other items that might have belonged to her.

Mr Dattilo was stabbed twice in the stomach and once in the back, and the 38-year-old woman was stabbed in the neck before the intruders left. A bleeding Mr Dattilo allegedly grabbed a .303 rifle and raced outside.

“The two offenders … in a Holden Colorado and were reversing out of the driveway when (he) armed himself with a Winchester rifle and opened fire,” Acting Supt Albury said.

Mr Dattilo fired at least twice, with one round hitting the driver’s door and the other going through his arm.

The driver, who was speeding and losing blood, smashed into a telegraph pole, snapping it at the base, about 5km down the road, Acting Supt Albury said.

The 38-year-old woman is in a serious but stable condition in hospital. Mr Datillo, who is also under police guard, is stable.

“Vince, praying for you and your family today,” one friend wrote on Facebook. Police say the rifle was unlicensed and unregistered.

Supt Albury noted the “alarming escalation” of violence that resulted in a rifle being fired in the “terrifying” incident.

A man identified by police as Mr Dattilo’s brother arrived in a luxury BMW at the crime scene on Tuesday afternoon.

He wanted officers to let him visit his elderly parents, who live in another house on the property.

Frustrated by their refusal, he left, telling reporters he knew little about the shooting.

The anti-bikie Strike Force Raptor was helping with the investigation, a NSW Police spokeswoman told AAP.

The woman will face Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday charged with five offences, including aggravated break-and-enter and two attempted murder charges.

Police: Suspect in fatal Dothan shooting acted in self-defense
    Tuesday, July 17th 2018, 12:07 pm EDT
    DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -
A man at the center of a fatal shooting in Dothan may not face charges because police say he acted in self-defense.

Dothan police say Dennis Allen, 36, turned himself into police Monday and stated he was the person involved in the shooting which happened in the 900 block of Sixth Ave. Monday.

Investigators conducted multiple interviews with witnesses and Jackson and it was determined that this was an ongoing conflict between Jackson and McKay. Jackson is believed to have acted in self-defense and no charges have been filed at this time.

Investigators say the conflict between the two men happened over a period of a few days and on the day of the shooting, Jackson called to report threats made against him.

Officials say the case will be presented to a grand jury at a later date.

Deputies: Woman fires 8 shots at ex-boyfriend during burglary
Cody Salanci, 27, charged with assault

LAKE CITY, Fla. - A Columbia County man was charged with burglary and assault after he broke into his ex-girlfriend's home and was met with gunfire, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office said.

The homeowner told deputies she had gotten a domestic violence injunction against Cody Salanci, 27, and Salanci was not allowed within 500 feet of her home, the Sheriff's Office said. The homeowner said she was 26 weeks pregnant when Salanci first hit her, and he has not lived at her address since June 1.

According to the incident report, the ex-girlfriend decided to stay at a hotel the after receiving harassing phone calls from Salanci in July. When she returned home July 8, she found her door kicked-in, a knife stuck in her wall, writing on a mirror and a note.

Early Saturday morning, the woman said she grabbed her handgun when she heard Salanci come through the front door, the incident report said. As Salanci was running at her, she fired five shots at Salanci.

During a scuffle, Slanaci got hold of the woman's gun and cellphone, and he went for the door, the Sheriff's Office said. The woman then grabbed a shotgun and fired three more shots at the front door.

Investigators said after taking the woman's car and driving through a locked gate, Salanci got away. Deputies later caught up with him just north of White Springs.

Deputies said he had injuries to his neck and finger, but it's unclear if he was shot.

Salanci was taken to a hospital and later taken to jail. He was charged with aggravated assault, burglary and vehicle theft.

A man heard a commotion outside his southeast Houston home Tuesday at around 10:30 p.m., police say.

His wife had just pulled up to their home, according to KRIV. Two men attacked her as she walked up to their home, the station reported.

One went for her purse, while the other tried to force her inside the home in the 4300 block of South Acres Drive, KPRC reported. He held a gun to the woman’s head while they advanced toward the house.

Neither of the alleged thieves knew, though, that the woman’s husband was also inside.

When he peered out one of the home’s windows, KTRK reported, he saw two men with guns, so he grabbed his own pistol before going outside and confronting the attackers.

He exchanged fire with the two men, forcing one of them to run, the station reported. But the one who stayed in the gunfight was holding his wife at gunpoint.

So police say the husband aimed for his head.

Neither the husband nor the wife who were attacked have been identified by authorities.

The husband shot the man who held his wife once in the head, injuring the man critically, but not killing him, according to KHOU. Police found the attacker lying in the couple’s driveway.

The alleged attacker has not been identified by police, either.

He remained in a local hospital Tuesday morning after having emergency surgery late Monday night, KHOU reported. Police are still looking for the attacker who fled the scene.
