Homeowner shoots, kills person trying to break into home

LAS VEGAS - Metro Police investigated a shooting at 2854 La Canada Street near E. Vegas Valley Drive and S. Maryland Parkway.

According to Metro, around 11:00 a.m., a call came in to police about a person who had been shot.

Metro Police said it was believed that the person who was shot was an intruder. Officers believe the suspect was shot by a homeowner.

The person shot was taken to Sunrise Hospital where he died.

Naked Burglar’s Arraignment Hearing
WEST POINT – A Wisner family wakes up to an intruder and quickly take action.

Police say, on the 24th of May, Jaben Sateren broke into a home in Cuming County.

The break-in was anything, but typical.

That’s because he was not wearing any clothes.

The homeowner, Brook Anderson, grabbed his gun and shot the intruder in the leg twice and held him at gunpoint until officers arrived.

Brook’s wife, Jennifer Anderson, says the experience changed her feelings about her Wisner neighborhood.

“We use to be in a quiet neighborhood where everyone knew everyone and kids would be outside by themselves. Now we don’t feel that way.”

A Cuming County judge read Sateren his charges Wednesday afternoon, they include one county of felony burglary, trespassing and criminal mischief.

If convicted he could spend the next 21 years in jail.

The judge in the case originally set bail at $100,000, but Sateren’s lawyer asked for a bail reduction so that his client could seek mental health care.

The judge granted that request, setting a bail of $50,000, along with several conditions, including no contact with the family and taking all prescribed medication.

Jennifer Anderson says she hopes Sateren gets the help he needs.

“If it was drugs, he needs help. If it was a mental problem, he needs a lot of help and our country needs more mental health [care] if that’s what it is.”

Sateren is due back in court Friday, June 15th at 9 am.

She burglarized a home and ditched her dog — then a resident held her at gunpoint, cops say

Authorities in Santa Cruz County arrested a woman Monday after they say she burglarized a home, abandoned her dog, led police on two vehicle chases and ended up being held at gunpoint by a resident, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The woman, identified as 32-year-old Samantha Vetter, broke into a home in Ben Lomond on Monday afternoon and stole multiple firearms, investigators said, according to KSBW.

When deputies arrived, Vetter sped away in a stolen Lexus, abandoning her pet dog, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said.

Officials pursued her on Highway 9, but stopped the chase due to road construction and a road closure, police said.

Later that day, another deputy spotted the Lexus in downtown Boulder Creek, and authorities again gave chase.

"The deputy continued to pursue the woman until he lost sight of her," the sheriff’s news release said.

Officials searched for the vehicle and waited at nearby intersections, but didn’t catch a glimpse of it.

That is, until evening.

That’s when residents on Branciforte Drive in the Santa Cruz area reported a silver Lexus blocking a driveway, police said.

A woman was walking door to door asking residents to not call the police. She was also asking for gas, officials said.

When police arrived in the neighborhood, they found a 45-year-old man named Chad Tartala by the Lexus, according to the release. He told authorities that the woman he was with was up the driveway looking for gasoline.

Inside the Lexus, officials found stolen property from the earlier burglary, police said.

Meanwhile, officials made a reverse 911 call to residents, asking them to shelter in place "because of the public safety threat Samantha represented," the news release said.

Other neighbors began calling 911 to report that they saw a woman trying to get into parked cars in the area.

One of the residents who received the reverse 911 call saw Vetter climb over his driveway’s fence and walk toward his house, police said.

The man armed himself with a handgun and shouted at Vetter to stop, but "she continued toward him, challenging him to shoot her," according to the news release.

"Finally, fearing for his and his family’s safety, the resident fired a single warning shot into the soft dirt in front of his porch," the news release said.

Vetter then followed the resident’s commands to lay flat on the ground, and deputies arrived and arrested her.

Vetter, who is homeless and from the San Lorenzo Valley, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, vehicle theft, evading a peace officer, carrying a loaded firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and violating probation, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported.

Tartala, the man who was with Vetter, was arrested on suspicion of narcotics and stolen property charges, police said.

Officials said they will not seek charges against the homeowner who held Vetter at gunpoint.

Deputies Arrest Man Suspected in Break-Ins - Multiple Felony Convictions

Franklin County authorities nabbed a man suspected in a string of burglaries in the St. Clair area.

Sheriff Steve Pelton said Dustin T. Bailey, 33, St. Clair, was arrested during a traffic stop on Loller Branch Road between Sullivan and St. Clair.

Bailey had several warrants for his arrest for forgery, resisting arrest and burglary. He recently resisted arrest by fleeing from deputies, authorities allege.

Pelton said deputies “saturated” the Loller Branch Road area because Bailey was believed to be located there.

“This was good, old-fashioned police work,” he said. “I really want to thank citizens for the calls with tips and possible sightings.

“Their help is so instrumental when it comes to working together to cut crime.”

Now that Bailey is in custody, authorities will question the man seeking information about burglaries near Happy Sac Road.

Criminal Record

Bailey was wanted for probation violations from sentences handed down in felony cases in 2017.

According to court records, April 2017 Bailey was sentenced to five years’ probation, suspended imposition of sentence (SIS), as well as 110 days’ shock time in the Missouri Department of Corrections from multiple felonies that occurred in 2016. Felonies include forgery, resisting arrest, drug possession and two counts of second-degree burglary.

In July 2017, following probation violations, Bailey’s sentence was amended to a suspended execution of sentence (SES), which means the charges remain on his record.

Drug Charges

Bailey’s drug charges and a resisting arrest charge stem from a February 2017 incident at a home in the 3300 block of Lollar Branch Road, in the same area he was arrested Thursday.

Authorities said Bailey was in possession of illegal drugs when he arrived at the residence, while the Franklin County S.W.A.T. team, along with the Multi-County Narcotics and Violent Crimes Enforcement Unit, executed a search warrant.

Another man was arrested for probation violations, and officers seized two firearms and drug paraphernalia at the home.

Bailey fled on foot from deputies, was held at gunpoint by a neighboring homeowner and was shot at when he again ran from officers. Authorities searched for the suspect until after dark, with the assistance of a Missouri State Highway Patrol plane, but were unable to locate the man.

The following day, an area resident found the suspect sleeping in his truck.

According to the sheriff’s department, the suspect left the truck and then got a ride in a different vehicle, which was traveling toward St. Clair. Authorities stopped the vehicle on Interstate 44 and the suspect was taken into custody.

Kevin Brown, 53, who retired from Major League Baseball in 2005, reportedly told police he had heard neighbor’s complaints about stolen mail and decided to take action.

Brown hid in his neighbor’s yard while waiting for the supposed thieves to strike again, he later told police, the report said.

When police arrived at the residence, they found Brown holding a 15-year-old and a man at gunpoint, The Telegraph reported. Brown told police he had caught them rummaging through the neighbor's mail.

The mailbox was reportedly left open.

Both of the suspects were arrested. Authorities interviewed the older man late Wednesday, the paper reported. It is unclear what charges the alleged perpetrators face. Additional information is not known at this time.

In addition to the Yankees, Brown has played for the Rangers, Orioles, Marlins, Padres, and Dogers throughout his 19-year career in the majors.

Police: Ohio man shoots neighbor attacking woman with an ax

TOLEDO, Ohio — Police say an Ohio man shot and killed another man who was attacking a woman with an ax.

The Blade reports Benjamin Hand told police he saw the man strike the woman with the weapon in Toledo around noon Wednesday.

Hand shot the man, and he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:55 p.m. Police have identified the man as 59-year-old Bernard Neyland.

The woman has been identified as 53-year-old Lakita Wilson, and police say she suffered multiple cuts.

An investigation is ongoing.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WSVN) — Police say a man who tried to carjack two people was thwarted after the victims both pulled out guns to protect themselves.

According to Fox 30, Jacksonville police officers arrested 36-year-old Christopher Raymond Hill, charging him with strong-arm robbery, carjacking with firearm or deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and trespassing.

Detectives said the incident began when Hill robbed a Walmart liquor store, and attempted to flee in a silver Ford SUV. However, witnesses said the vehicle would not start, so he first tried to carjack Scott Reardean at knifepoint, cutting him on his arms and legs.

“I reached in between my glove box and my console, between my seats, reached down and got my weapon and brandished it for him,” Reardean told WJXT. “He was like, ‘Don’t shoot me.’ I was like, ‘Then get out of here.’”

Hill then jumped into the passenger seat of a woman’s car in a Starbucks drive-thru. Police said the woman got out of her car and grabbed a pistol from her trunk, pointing it at Hill until he ran off.

Reardean said he was glad he had his gun with him for self-defense.

“These guys can talk about banning assault rifles and banning guns, but when it comes and happens to them, they’re going to wish they had one,” Reardean told the station.

Ultimately, police found Hill inside the bathroom of a Supercuts, where he surrendered.

According to an arrest report, Hill told police, “The reason I was running and did this was because somebody was after me.”

Hill is currently being held on a bond of $91,512.

Great story but neither driver had the gun on their person, so they both lucked out. The one that got slashed with a knife could have avoided that by carrying on person.

SAPD: Fatal East Side shooting may have been done in self defense

San Antonio police said a man was fatally shot in the 2600 block of Bermuda about 6:40 p.m., Tuesday, June 12, 2018.

A San Antonio man fatally shot outside an East Side home Tuesday evening was assaulting someone before he was killed, according to San Antonio police.

Officers were called to the 2600 block of Bermuda Drive at 6:35 p.m., where they found 51-year-old Jerry Lopez Sr. He had been shot multiple times in the chest, police said.

The shooter remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation, according to the police department.

A witness told police Lopez assaulted them before going outside the home to shatter the windows of a pickup, according to a preliminary police report. Lopez also allegedly fired two rounds.

When Lopez went back into the home, he allegedly threatened the shooter and pointed his gun at him. The shooter pulled out his own gun and shot Lopez, who was pronounced dead by paramedics shortly after they arrived to the home, authorities said.

Police released the shooter while they continue investigating the incident.

Police: Man breaks into Glendale home and make food; held at gunpoint by neighbors

GLENDALE, AZ - A man allegedly broke into a Glendale home and made food before being held a gunpoint by the victim's neighbors.

Glendale police reported that on June 7 they responded to a home near 83rd Avenue and Camelback Road for a reported burglary.

The homeowner came home that night because she received an alarm activation warning. When she got home, she saw the front door open and a man in her living room.

She ran across the street to alert her neighbors and called the police, court documents said. The neighbors went to the victim’s house and were confronted by 46-year-old Aaron Mason.

The neighbors pointed handguns at Mason commanding him to get on the ground, court paperwork said. Mason reportedly smashed a glass bottle before sitting down.

The neighbors held Mason at gunpoint until police arrived, authorities said.

The victim reported to police that Mason had cooked and eaten her food and damaged items in her home. The damage is estimated to be about $3,000.

Mason has been charged with burglary.
