    CLAYSVILLE, Pa. —
A young boy spotted a burglar inside of their Claysville home just before 1 a.m. Tuesday and told his father, according to the criminal complaint.

The complaint said the homeowner got his gun and went looking for the intruder.

When police arrived, the resident was aiming a pistol at 21-year-old Brandon Champe, who was on his knees with his hands on top of his head in the upstairs hallway, according to court papers.

"I'm glad that he protected himself and used his gun when he had to," Richard Morgan, a neighbor, said. "And I think he kept us all safe.

Police said Champe was drunk and they believe he entered where a pane of glass had been pulled from the frame.

"This is a good town," Morgan said. "We have a lot of good people, they look out after each other."

Champe has been charged with burglary and public drunkenness.

Franklin Resident Shoots Nashville Robber in Self-Defense

    https://williamsonsource.com/frankli...-self-defense/
West Precinct detectives arrested Raymond Amos, 22, for his involvement in the attempted robbery of a man who was interested in buying a pickup truck listed for sale online.

The prospective buyer and a friend, both from Franklin, Tennessee, arrived at a Lenox Avenue residence Thursday at 6:15 p.m. to look at the truck. According to both victims, a man later identified as Christopher Jenkins, 20, then attempted to rob them at gunpoint. A second suspect began to pat the men down. The interested buyer then fired shots in self-defense, apparently striking Jenkins. Both victims ran from the house. They reported hearing gunfire as they escaped. They were not injured. Jenkins, who fled on foot before collapsing in a nearby Kroger parking lot, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he is in critical condition.

In addition to last night’s attempted robbery, Amos is also charged with the November 2nd hold-up of a man who responded to the Richland Hills apartment complex, 5800 Maudina Avenue, to purchase a cell phone that had been listed for sale online. When he went to meet the seller, he was robbed at gunpoint in a breezeway. Amos was positively identified as the gunman in that case.

Amos is charged with two counts of attempted robbery and aggravated robbery. His photo is being withheld pending lineups.

    Charges against shooter dropped

    http://www.newsminer.com/news/local_...03d844f52.html
FAIRBANKS — The case against a 30-year-old Fairbanks man accused of shooting his neighbor in the back last year was dropped this week halfway through jury selection in Fairbanks Superior Court.

Assistant District Attorney David Buettner said he made the decision Tuesday morning after he spoke with his investigator and the victim during a break and concluded the state did not have sufficient evidence to disprove self-defense beyond a reasonable doubt.

“As with every criminal case there’s always information that is forthcoming, and evidence and rulings that change the perspective of the case,” Buettner said. “We can’t ethically pursue cases when we don’t believe we have an opportunity for conviction.”

The defendant, Steven Edward Hannah, called Alaska State Troopers the evening of July 16, 2016, to report he shot his neighbor because the man was “coming at him,” according to a criminal complaint filed in Fairbanks court. Troopers responded and found the man lying face down in the grass about 30 feet from Hannah’s residence, unresponsive, gasping for breath and with multiple gunshot wounds in his back.

Doctors at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital told troopers that the man’s legs were unresponsive and he likely had a spinal cord injury. Buettner confirmed Wednesday the man is paralyzed from the waist down.

Fairbanks District Attorney Gregg Olson said a case can be dismissed just as it goes to trial for a variety of reasons.

“It’s not unusual because it’s often the case that the defendant is holding evidence that he reveals to his attorney at the last minute,” he said. “Also, on most trials we continue our investigation up to and during the trial. Every day can provide new information.

“I don’t believe this was a case that we did additional investigation; it was information provided by the defense,” he said. “The thinking is, if this information is true, how is that likely to change what will happen at trial?”

Hannah was unable to post bail after his arrest and spent one year and four months in jail while awaiting trial.

Police: 7-Eleven clerk shoots armed suspect during attempted robbery

    http://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/ari...empted-robbery
GILBERT, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Police say a suspect was shot by a store clerk during an attempted robbery at a Gilbert 7-Eleven.

Gilbert police say the incident happened on November 15 at 2:50 p.m. at a 7-Eleven near Cooper and Elliot Roads when the suspect, identified as 27-year-old E'lon Hayes, entered the convenience store, pointed a handgun at the clerk, and demanded money.

Police say the clerk was also armed with a handgun and drew his weapon to defend himself. Hayes then ran outside the store and made another threatening gesture towards the clerk, who followed behind him.

The store clerk then shot Hayes, who was still able to run from the scene. Officers found Hayes in a nearby neighborhood and he was transported to a nearby hospital.

Upon his release from the hospital, police say Hayes will be charged with armed robbery.

The Final Chapter in Anthony Mott's Make My Day Craigslist Homicide
    Michael RobertsNovember 16, 2017

    http://www.westword.com/news/craigsl...y-case-9671768
Millions upon millions of people have bought and sold items on Craigslist without a problem. But that doesn't mean that horror stories involving the service are unknown, as Anthony Mott understands very well. Last year, the Jefferson County homeowner was tied up, threatened with a knife and robbed by two men who responded to a Craigslist ad, one of whom Mott managed to kill after freeing himself. Now, David Mascarenas, the surviving partner in crime, has pleaded guilty and faces decades behind bars for his role in this nightmare scenario.

Here's how it happened, as we reported in our previous coverage.

At 9:05 a.m. on January 24, 2016, a Jefferson County Sheriff's Office dispatcher was alerted to what the JCSO characterized as "a disturbance" on the 5400 block of South Taft Court. Immediately thereafter, more 911 callers spoke about shots fired.

Deputies rushed to the scene, where they discovered that an SUV driven by a gravely injured man later identified as David Martinez, 38, had smashed into a home near where the shooting had taken place. Martinez subsequently died of his wounds.

    Jefferson County Sheriff's Office
Investigators later learned that Martinez and Mascarenas had ostensibly arrived at Taft Court to check out items that had been listed for sale on Craigslist. According to the First Judicial District DA's office, Mott invited the two men inside his residence — but after a brief discussion, Mascarenas bound his wrists and held a knife to his neck while swiping an array of valuables: wallets, purses and electronics.

At that point, the pair moved on to their next target: Mott's SUV. But before they could spirit the ride away, Mott freed himself, grabbed his gun, headed to the front porch and yelled at the men to stop. Martinez is said to have reacted by producing a gun of his own, and Mott opened fire. The aforementioned crash followed.

In the meantime, Mascarenas fled the scene in a gold 1990s-era Mustang. But it didn't take long for the JCSO to learn his name, thanks to his use of Mott's credit cards — an act very much in keeping with the many offenses on his rap sheet, which dated back 35 years and filled seventeen pages. His convictions included burglary, drug possession and driving under the influence.

At the time of his unwelcome visit to Mott's home, Mascarenas also had an active warrant in his name for first-degree burglary, aggravated robbery and identity theft.

Two days later, Mascarenas was taken into custody — and the following month, Mott was officially cleared by prosecutors under Colorado's Make My Day law.

In a statement announcing that Mott wouldn't be charged, First Judicial District DA Pete Weir said, “It is standard procedure for law enforcement to conduct an investigation into any death resulting from a gunshot wound. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office did a very thorough investigation in this case. Following their presentation of the evidence regarding the shooting of Mr. Martinez, the decision was made that criminal charges were not warranted.”

Earlier this month, Mascarenas pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery, first-degree burglary, motor vehicle theft, menacing, identity theft and false imprisonment. At a December 9 hearing, he's expected to be sentenced to between 32 and 40 years in prison.

This punishment will bring to a close one of several Craigslist-connected incidents that resulted in a Colorado homicide over the past few years. Get more details in our 2016 post "Five Colorado Deaths Related to Craigslist."

Has there been a higher rate of defensive gun uses, or are you getting better at finding the stories?
