Police: 3 shot during apparent home invasion

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Fort Wayne police are investigating after three people were shot during a home invasion Wednesday morning.

Fort Wayne Police were called around 8 a.m. to the 4000 block of Reed Street, which is just south of Rudisill Boulevard and east of South Anthony Boulevard, on a report of a shooting.

At least two people inside the home suffered gunshot wounds – 37-year-old Demale Amos and 35-year-old Jamika Martin. Amos was shot in the foot and refused medical treatment, whole Martin was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

During the course of the investigation, police learned that the homeowner may have shot at least one suspect before that person fled on foot.

Around 8:30 a.m. a victim of an apparent gunshot showed up at a Fort Wayne hospital. That person was in critical condition.

Fort Wayne Police said that person is considered a suspect in the case, and their identity was not released.

Fort Wayne Police have requested video from people nearby who own Ring Doorbells. It is the first such request made by police since entering a new partnership with Ring.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Fort Wayne Police at 260-427-1201 or Crime Stoppers at 260-436-STOP.

Providence police: Robbery victim pulls gun, shoots suspect

PROVIDENCE -- A robbery victim turned the tables on his assailant during a struggle in his home, shooting and injuring the suspect in an incident late Monday night, police said.

The victim told police he was outside his Simmons Street home having a cigarette when a man with a gun tried to rob him. The suspect forced the victim into his house, and a struggle broke out, police said. The victim managed to get the handgun he kept in his house and started shooting at the suspect, police said. The suspect took off from the home, but the robbery victim believed he’d struck him.

Police soon got a call from Rhode Island Hospital that a man who’d been shot was at the hospital. They identified him as Tyrelle Palmer, 26, who will be charged with robbery and possession of a firearm while committing a felony, Major David Lapatin said.

Palmer was still in the hospital later Tuesday morning with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Lapatin said.

The man who opened fire at Palmer has not been charged, but the investigation remains open, Lapatin said.

Possible home invasion, shooting under investigation in Northeast Hickory

A Hickory man says he was asleep when he woke up to find two armed men in his bedroom at his 37th Street Drive NE residence at around 10:30 a.m. this morning.

Catawba County Sheriff's Office Capt. Aaron Turk says the homeowner shot at the intruders and possibly injured one of the men.

A man with multiple gunshot wounds is currently being treated at Frye Regional Medical Center, Turk said, but investigators are working to determine if this man is one of the intruders.

The other intruder is unaccounted for as of 12:30 p.m. The homeowner is unharmed, Turk said.

This incident is still under investigation. The Hickory Daily Record will update this story with more information as it becomes available.

San Pedro resident fatally shoots suspected burglar

A suspected burglar was shot dead by a resident in San Pedro Thursday morning, Sept. 19, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 7:15 a.m. in the 2800 block of South Carolina Street, Officer J. Chavez said.

The suspect had first tried to enter the home through the front door, but when he was stopped by the resident, he went around and entered through a side window, police said.

The resident then fired when the suspect advanced toward him, police said.

This story comes out of Fort Mills, SC where a man was ramming his truck into other cars in the parking lot of the Crown Plaza off Regent Parkway this past Sunday.

It is unclear why the man was ramming other cars but according to witnesses, he was completely destroying other cars and pushing them into a column of the building. When the suspect got out of his car, a man with a concealed carry permit decided to pistol-whip him and hold him at gunpoint until police arrived.



But when he pistol-whipped the suspect, he also discharged the gun. Luckily for him, the round didn’t hit anyone and the police didn’t charge him of crimes. One of the witnesses said, “I thought he shot him, but he had pistol-whipped the fellow and that’s what made the gun go off,” said witness John Simpson via WSOCTV.

But I would be willing to bet that the concealed carrier had his finger on the trigger when he pistol-whipped him and pulled the trigger. So I guess a takeaway from this story would be if you are planning on pistol-whipping someone, make sure your finger isn’t on the trigger.

The suspect was brought to the hospital and charges are currently pending

First, gunshots rang out on a St. Paul street — three shots and then five more.

Then, an 8-year-old girl screamed.

“They shot my dad! They shot my dad!” neighbors heard.

RayVell Carter, 41, of Roseville, was fatally shot Wednesday night after he left Bible study in the Summit-University neighborhood .

Police said he had just departed St. Albans Church of God in Christ at Aurora Avenue and St. Albans Street with a group of people, including his father and daughter, when someone opened fire.

Carter’s father, who has a permit to carry, fired back, police said.

Carter’s killing was the sixth fatal shooting in St. Paul this month and the 20th homicide of the year.

Mayor Melvin Carter, who was not related to the man who died, said Thursday that the recent violence has “been unacceptable and unusual in our city.”

Last week, Police Chief Todd Axtell announced a five-step plan, including having extra officers on patrol, after there were three homicides in an 8-hour span.

FAMILY REELING AFTER SHOOTING

Frances Goodlow lives in the area where RayVell Carter was shot. His body was found in her backyard, his Bible next to him.

Goodlow heard the anguished cries of Carter’s daughter and said she’s grateful that the girl wasn’t wounded.

“I’m thinking they didn’t shoot her because (Carter’s) father responded so quickly, shooting at them, that they got away,” said David Goodlow, Frances’ husband. He heard the shots, but neither he nor Frances saw who was responsible.

Da’Ray Sherow, a cousin of Carter’s, said he’s shocked, saddened and angry.

“There’s certain rules you thought that people had or certain places people respect,” Sherow said. “… It kind of goes to show that … bad things can happen at any time, no matter what you’re doing.

“For him to be coming out of his Bible study, it’s going to take some time to wrap my head around that one, why somebody would do that to him in front of his daughter of all things,” Sherow continued.

Police said the homicide did not appear random. The investigation continues and police did not announce any arrests Thursday.

A moose charged a 3-year-old in an Anchorage park. His father shot and killed it.

Matthew Sanders and his 3-year-old son, Huxley, were walking on a narrow trail on the edge of Anchorage’s Kincaid Park on Thursday when the boy turned a corner and ran into two moose in tall grass.

It was the kind of heart-pounding moment encountered by many hikers and cyclists in one of Anchorage’s biggest, most-used patches of wild land.

But things turned quickly. Sanders yelled. The boy froze. The cow moose charged.

The Anchorage father says he was able to get between his son and the moose and pull a .44 Magnum from a chest holster. By then the moose was so close “all I could see was its nostrils and hairs,” Sanders later recounted in a Facebook post.

Sanders says he shot the moose, which ran into a thicket of horsetails and cow parsnip at the trail’s edge.

Then cow charged again, according to Sanders. This time the father, holding his 3-year-old, fired three shots.

“At that point, I turned around and started running with Huxley to safety,” Sanders said.

He says he didn’t see what happened to the other moose, a bull.

The incident marks the first time a moose has been killed for self defense in Kincaid Park this year, according to Dave Battle, area biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

But it’s not the first time someone has shot a moose inside Kincaid in 2019.

In May, a moose walking on the Middle Earth single-track trail at Kincaid, slightly injuring a mother and child. The father was carrying a gun and shot the animal, which ran off, Battle said. Biologists from Fish and Game searched for the moose, following a blood trail, but never found a carcass.

“We don’t know what happened to that moose,” Battle said.

Department biologists visited the scene of the moose kill Thursday and interviewed Sanders about what happened. The moose, determined to be about 2-years-old, was butchered for meat, which will be donated to a family in need through a Fish and Game program.

The incident seems to amount to a valid defense of life and property kill, the only legal reason a person can kill a moose in a city park, Battle said.

Incidents like this are a reminder that moose are unpredictable, and not just during the sensitive spring calving season and aggressive fall rut, Battle said.

“You can never tell what a moose just went through, before you had with it,” he said. “You can’t count on that moose acting the same as all the other moose you’ve encountered recently.”

The father and son encountered the wrong moose at the wrong moment, Battle said.

A moose may be sick, or have encountered a predator, have been chased by a dog, he said. If something has a moose “ramped up,” it can react with sudden aggression, he said.

Kincaid Park is full of moose, though biologists don’t know precisely how many.

There are probably “dozens” in the 1,516 acre park in West Anchorage at any given time, Battle said. They are most often seen during the spring, summer and fall.

Thursday’s incident happened on an unnamed multi-use trail about a quarter mile from a trail head at the eastern edge of the park, close to the Tower Power mountain biking trails, according to Sanders and Battle.

Sanders said he and his son live nearby and have walked on the trail “hundreds of times” without incident, almost daily.

On Thursday morning, Sanders said he’d heard about bears on the trails that seemed unperturbed by human . At the last minute he decided to pack a .44 Magnum instead of bear spray. It was the first time he’d ever carried a weapon on that trail, he said.

He and his son were making “lots of noise” when he stopped to pull a piece of gum out of his pocket. That’s when the boy walked slightly ahead and encountered the moose, he said.

Huxley, the 3-year-old, was shaken by what happened.

“We had to start trying to talk about guns, gun safety,” Sanders said. “I took him the next day to go into the park, but before the woodline he got super scared. His eyes were up, looking around.”

Since then the boy has gotten comfortable in the woods again, Sanders said.

Biologists have heard of an “average to above-average” number of human-moose encounters in the Anchorage area this year, according to Battle.

It has been a “startlingly low” year for human-bear encounters, Battle said. He isn’t sure why.

If there’s a lesson to be learned from Sanders’ experience Thursday, it’s that moose are everywhere — and their behavior is impossible to predict with accuracy, Battle said.

Sanders said his big lesson is about being prepared.

“Wildlife, you never know what they’re going to do,” he said.

Sheriff: Arkansas homeowner holds armed men at gunpoint until authorities arrive

A north Arkansas homeowner held two armed men at gunpoint Thursday morning until deputies arrived and arrested them, authorities said.

The Baxter County sheriff’s office said Greg Garreans, 29, and Kip Swadley, 28, were armed with loaded shotguns when they went to a home on Ben Nevis Drive in Briarcliff. A third man, identified only as “Alex,” is believed to have accompanied them. He was said to be armed with a samurai-style sword.

Garreans told authorities the trio went to the home because he believed a former house guest who had stolen a rifle was there, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

The homeowner told authorities he opened the door to find Garreans pointing a gun at him. Authorities said the homeowner was armed with a handgun, and he convinced the two gunmen to drop their weapons.

The homeowner told Garreans and Swadley to get on the ground, and they stayed there until deputies arrived and arrested them on charges of aggravated assault, the sheriff's office said. The third man left before deputies arrived.

Security video confirmed the homeowner’s statements, according to the news release. Investigators are still trying to identify the third man,

Garreans and Swadley were both being held at the Baxter County jail on Friday morning on $10,000 bond. They are each set to appear in court on Sept. 26.

ENID, Okla. – Authorities in Enid say they are investigating a series of burglaries, which caused two elementary schools to be placed on ‘lock out.’

Around 5:14 a.m. on Friday, officers were called to a home in the 600 block of N. Wheatridge Rd. following a reported burglary.

The homeowner told investigators that he woke up to a loud noise and went to investigate. He eventually stumbled upon a suspect who was trying to steal his property.

During the confrontation, the homeowner fired a shot at the suspect, and the suspect may have returned fire.

The suspect fled the scene and abandoned his vehicle, but he was taken into custody a short time later in a nearby field.

Authorities say the suspect’s vehicle contained a large amount of property that is believed to have been stolen from other homes in the area.

As a result of the investigation, Glenwood and Prairie View elementary schools were placed on lockout as a precaution.

“This is an important message for parents at Glenwood Elementary School and Prairie View Elementary School. All students and staff are safe. As you may know, the Enid Police Department is currently pursuing a suspect on the west side of our community. While this matter is not school related, it does impact our schools and our neighborhoods. Out of an abundance of caution, both Glenwood and Prairie View have been placed on ‘lock out,’ which means the exterior doors of the school have been locked. Students are continuing as normal with their day inside.

Safety is our greatest priority. Local law enforcement will be present near both schools, and we will continue to communicate with EPD about their search as it is ongoing. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school office. We appreciate your support of Enid Public Schools,” a statement from the district read.

After the suspect was apprehended, the ‘lockout’ was canceled.

At this point, police are asking residents to check their property to make sure they were not targeted by thieves.

Officials say this is a developing case, adding that an additional suspect may still be on the loose.
