Man shoots teen allegedly caught breaking into his car in Fort Lauderdale

    http://wsvn.com/news/local/man-shoot...rt-lauderdale/
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - A teen has been hospitalized after a man allegedly caught him trying to break into his car in Fort Lauderdale.

Police responded to the scene in the Tarpon River neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale early Tuesday morning.

According to police, the homeowner told investigators he awoke to someone breaking into their car. They went outside to check and see what was happening and opened fire on the person breaking into the car.

Police said the 16-year-old suspect was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

A bicycle could be seen laying in the road near the scene. However, it was not clear if it was related to the incident, but it was surrounded by several evidence markers.

A neighbor said that although she didn’t see what happened, she could hear the gunshots as she was getting ready for work.

“I heard five gunshots in the middle of the night, around 5 o’clock in the morning,” said Carolyn Moreno. “I wasn’t sure if they were gunshots, but then it was confirmed when I heard people talking outside, so I kind of peeked out the window, and then I saw cops.”

    Police continue to investigate.

Oak Park 7-Eleven clerk shoots robbery suspect

    http://abc7chicago.com/oak-park-7-el...spect/2772305/
OAK PARK, Ill. (WLS) -- A robber was critically wounded late Monday night after a 7-Eleven store clerk shot him in the stomach in west suburban Oak Park, police said. Two other robbery suspects are on the run.

Officers responded to the convenience store on the corner of Chicago and Harvey avenues around 11:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found a man on the floor bleeding from his abdomen. He was transported in critical condition to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

Police said the clerk who had a valid firearms owners ID card is the one who pulled the trigger. The two store clerks who were in the 7-Eleven during the robbery were not hurt.

A manager said this store has been robbed at least five times in the past year.

"I've been here for about 10 years and the last couple years and you can tell that there's more crime around this area," said Vince Wheeler, a customer.

Julie Gerut, another customer, said she will be on guard.

"I love Oak Park. I think overall it's a very solid, safe place to live. But I do think that people have to be on their toes and be street smart," Gerut said.

This crime comes as Oak Park residents appealed to law enforcement for more patrols. The Cook County Sheriff's Department recently increased patrols after two community meetings about crime, stemming from a series of carjackings in the area.

State Police: Tolland Homeowner Fires Gun At Burglar

    http://www.courant.com/breaking-news...213-story.html
Troopers are looking for a burglar who was shot at when his break-in was interrupted by the Tolland homeowner, state police said.

No injuries were reported after the incident, which happened about 6:40 p.m. on Peter Green Road, they said.

According to police, the homeowner arrived home to find an unfamiliar pick-up truck parked in his driveway, backed up near the garage. A woman he didn’t know was in the passenger seat. When he asked what she was doing, she said she and the driver were lost and looking for directions from the homeowner’s neighbor.

The homeowner then heard a noise behind him, and when he turned around he saw a man running toward him with something in his hand. Fearing for his safety, the homeowner pulled his handgun and fired at the stranger. He owns the gun legally, police said.

When troopers searched the property, they found that the house’s rear, sliding-glass door was smashed in.

The man is described as white. He was last seen wearing a work-type shirt with reflective markings, a baseball-style cap, camouflage pants and work boots.

The suspect truck is described as a full-sized, late-model, dark-color pick-up, possibly a Dodge, with four doors and possibly an extended cab. The truck had a large plastic barrel in its bed.

YUMA, Ariz. - A 38-year-old man was shot during a home invasion on Augusta Drive Wednesday afternoon.

    UPDATE

At 1:45 p.m. a Yuma Police officer made contact with the 38-year-old male suspect who had an arrest warrant out for unlawful flight Wednesday.

The officer started a foot pursuit after the suspect crossed Avenue B westbound to Augusta Drive through a dirt lot.

Homeowner on Detroit's west side shoots intruder, shares his story with 7 Action News

    https://www.wxyz.com/news/region/det...-7-action-news
DETROIT (WXYZ) - It was a harrowing encounter on Detroit’s west side, when a homeowner shot the intruder who was holding him and his wife at gun point.

It happened before 6:00 Monday night at a home off Beaverland Rd. near Eaton.

Detroit police said two men ordered the homeowner and his wife into their house and then into the basement.

Daniel McNamara is the homeowner. He told his incredible story only to 7 Action News.

"He kept telling us to turn around, I said 'No, I'm not going to turn around,' I said 'You've got to kill me face to face',” said McNamara.

He said the suspects wanted him and his wife to turn around so they wouldn’t rememebr their faces.

During the home invasion, the suspects took both of the McNamara’s wedding rings, her purse, cash and cell phones.

"He kept pointing the gun at my head and said, 'You don't think I'll kill you face to face?' I said 'I don't know, but you're going to have to because I'm not turning around',” said McNamara.

He said he happened to have a gun stashed in the same area the suspects were holding the pair at gun point.

"All I could think about, how can I get that gun,” said McNamara.

He took his opportunity when one of the suspects said he would be right back and turned around and headed toward the stairs.

"Of course I was scared, who wouldn't be? Some goon has a gun to your head and tells you he's going to shoot you because you've seen his face,” said McNamara.

He fired off two shots and hit one of the suspects once.

Both of the suspect’s ran away very fast, McNamara believes there was likely a car waiting.

One of the suspects turned up at the hospital and the second suspect is still on the run.

"The Lord looked out for us today,” said McNamara.

Police continued to search the neighborhood for hours, but came up empty handed.

This is a followup to post 802. It goes to show that good guys with a gun do make a difference, even when they are breaking the rules of property owner so that they can protect themselves and other. This off duty officer was carrying in a COSTCO ( a well known anti company that specifically has a policy against people carrying in their store). Surprisingly, the policy did not stop the criminal from bringing a gun into the store. He may very well have killed a lot of people (some of whom may very well have been disarmed because of the store policy.... because some good guys follow the rules). Luckily the off duty officer either did not know about the policy, or did not care. He stopped the bad guy with the gun.

This is a textbook example of why gun free zones are such a joke. And the concept of the good guy with a gun stopping a bad guy with a gun is not a joke.

District attorney clears officer who killed man wielding gun at Lenexa Costco

    https://shawneemissionpost.com/2017/...a-costco-68318
Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe on Wednesday announced that his office had completed its review of the officer-involved shooting at the Lenexa Costco Nov. 26 and determined that the off-duty member of the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department who shot and killed Ronald Hunt had “acted in accordance with Kansas law as it pertains to self-defense or defense of another,” and that his actions had “saved an unknown amount of innocent lives.”

The officer, Capt. Michael Howell, was a customer inside the store the morning that Hunt entered and began brandishing a handgun, threatening to kill people in the store.

As customers began to rush for the exits, Howell engaged Hunt, identifying himself as a police officer and telling him to drop his weapon. When Hunt failed to comply, Howell shot and fatally wounded him.

The announcement from Howe is copied below:

On Sunday, November 26, 2017, Ronald Hunt went to the Lenexa, Kansas Costco. He was armed with a loaded black powder pistol. As he approached and entered Costco, he began threatening to shoot and kill customers. He was brandishing the pistol as he walked through the aisles. Costco employees acted quickly to evacuate the numerous customers in the warehouse.

One of the customers was an off-duty Kansas City, Kansas police officer. The officer was not at Costco on any official business. He had his police credentials and his off-duty handgun on his person. When the evacuation began, he approached a Costco manager, identified himself as a police officer, learned what was happening, and made sure that someone had called 911.

The off-duty officer saw Hunt making his way toward the back of the store. He could hear Hunt threatening to kill people. He could see the gun. The officer was concerned for the safety of the evacuating customers, and decided to confront Hunt. The officer identified himself as a police officer, and ordered Hunt to stop and drop his weapon. Hunt failed to comply, and acted aggressively toward the officer. The officer shot Hunt, who died from his wounds.

    The officer was not injured.

No one at Costco was injured by Hunt.

This office has reviewed the reports of the investigation conducted by the Johnson County Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team. It is our conclusion that the off-duty officer acted in accordance with Kansas law as it pertains to self-defense or defense of another.

Therefore, no charges will be filed against the officer in connection with this incident. It is our belief that this officer acted with extreme courage, and saved an unknown amount of innocent lives by his actions inside the Costco warehouse on November 26.

No Charges: Prosecutor Rules Fatal July 4 Shooting in Randle Was Self Defense
Police Reports: Man Killed had Multiple Guns, Boxes of Ammunition, Military-Style Clothing at Campground

    http://www.chronline.com/no-charges-...ed33a947b.html
Five months after a man died of a gunshot wound to the head at a Randle campground July 4, the Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office has formally concluded that the shooter acted in self-defense.

Lewis County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer sent a letter Tuesday to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office detective in charge of the case declining to file charges against John D. Arnold, 63, of Glenoma, who told detectives that he shot a man who fired multiple shots at him and his wife in their vehicle.

“I have reviewed the reports, statements, lab results and photographs,” Meyer wrote. “A thorough review makes it clear Mr. Arnold acted in self-defense.”

The victim of the shooting was identified by the Lewis County Coroner’s Office as Dusty Phelps, a 51-year-old transient. He died of a gunshot wound to the head.

The shooting was first reported at 7:14 p.m. July 4 at a campground near the intersection of Forest Road 2801 and Cispus Road. A trooper from the Washington State Patrol and a Morton Police Officer were the first to arrive.

Arnold and his wife told police they’d never met or seen Phelps before.

When he first spoke with Det. Gabriel Frase from the sheriff’s office that evening, Arnold said he and his wife went out to the campsite that evening and began hearing gunfire and bullets hitting trees.

“They thought this was dangerous and decided to speak with the person doing the shooting to express their concerns and tell him where he could go to safely shoot,” Frase wrote in his report.

The couple drove to the campsite where they believed the shooting was coming from. Arnold confronted Phelps about shooting unsafely, and Phelps allegedly walked toward them with a pistol in his hand. Arnold put his own pistol in his lap.

Arnold said Phelps walked up to the car and “immediately fired his handgun two times into the ground outside Arnold’s Dodge Durango and then pointed the pistol in the window at John (Arnold) and his wife,” Frase reported.

Arnold shoved Phelps’ hand away and fired one shot with his own gun, hitting Phelps in the head.

When Lewis County Sheriff’s Office Det. Michael Mohr arrived, he noted in his report seeing “a large amount of spent ammunition all throughout the camp and there was fresh wounds on several trees with actively running sap coming from them,” he said.

During the investigation, officers recovered a Ruger 9 mm handgun Phelps allegedly fired in the incident along with spent 9 mm casings and additional ammunition in the gun.

In Phelps’ vehicle, investigators collected a 20 gauge shotgun, a .30-30 rifle, an SKS rifle, an Archangel rifle and a Wolf rifle. Investigators also found a Sig Sauer 556 semi-automatic rifle with a bipod, flashlight and scope near a cooler full of ammunition.

Investigators noted finding among Phelps’ belongings numerous military style bags and clothing, including a military dress uniform with Phelps’ name on it and a gas mask.

Phelps’ campsite had clips of ammunition in several locations including loaded AR or M-16 style ammunition magazines.

The campsite also included a large, multi-room tent. A smaller tent appeared to be set aside for the dogs, according to reports from the sheriff’s office.

The words “Remember Ramadi” were written in dirt on the back window of Phelps’ SUV. Ramadi is a city in Iraq and the site of a 2006 battle in the Iraq War.

Officers also collected a second 9 mm Ruger belonging to Arnold, a .38 Ruger pistol from his wife and a 12 gauge shotgun from their SUV.

Five pit bull dogs were also found at Phelps’ camp.

Investigators also found a bullet hole in Arnold’s SUV, according to police reports, and damage in the door indicating Phelps shot a round inside the vehicle during the altercation.

Man shot in self-defense by victim sentenced for attempted car-jacking

    http://www.argusleader.com/story/new...ing/951199001/
A man who attempted to rob a 71-year-old man and his wife in a parking lot in October 2016 was sentenced to prison this week.

Edward James LaBlanc was sentenced to 12 years in the state penitentiary for second-degree attempted robbery, the maximum sentence available, according to the Minnehaha County State's Attorney's Office.

LaBlanc, 35, was arrested in October 2016 after police received a report of gunshots in the 4100 block of West 41st Street.

Police found that LaBlanc had attempted to car-jack a 71-year-old man and his wife after the victim parked his Prius in the Red Roof Inn parking lot. LaBlanc opened the driver's side door, punched the victim in the head and told the victim to leave the car and hand over his wallet, according to a release.

The victim shot LaBlanc twice with a Ruger LCR 38 revolver.

LaBlanc had been using alcohol and marijuana before the incident.

This is interesting. Looks like a concealed carrier protected himself from the criminal who was shot in Popeyes a week earlier.

Robber killed by citizen shooter was shot at weeks earlier

    https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/lo...t-12428466.php
When local real estate broker Stephen Manion saw the news that a young father, carrying a concealed weapon and having dinner with his two children at a Popeyes restaurant on the South Side, had shot and killed a masked robber last week at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, it struck him as weirdly familiar.

Around 8:30 p.m. on a Tuesday two weeks prior, Manion said, he was at a Dollar General on W.W. White Road “and stopped a robbery by firing at the very same guy.”

Manion missed. A San Antonio Police Department spokesman, Officer Doug Greene, confirmed that detectives believe the suspect who fled the Dollar General that night was Andres Herrera, 19, who was killed a week later at Popeyes.

Carlos Molina, 32, who was eating at Popeyes with his two kids on Dec. 6, had a license to carry a weapon and told police he opened fire after the robber pointed a gun at employees and customers, including him. Molina did not respond to interview requests left in text messages and notes. A police captain that night said he “really saved the day and protected a lot of people.”

Manion, 65, himself the father of three grown children, has had his concealed-carry license about seven years. He, too, said he only fired when he felt certain the robber was endangering the life of the Dollar General cashier and other shoppers.

Manion said he was shopping near the back of the store on Nov. 21 when he saw customers frantically coming his way from the front. He moved to another aisle and got a clear view of a robbery in progress.

“I went behind a rack of potato chips,” said Manion, who estimated he was about 16 feet from Herrera, who “was getting very agitated because the clerk was getting upset and having trouble getting the register open.”

“He was getting hysterical and screaming, `You’re taking too long.’ I was sure she was about to get shot,” Manion said.

Clutching his 9-millimeter handgun, Manion said he waited “what seemed like 20 minutes, but was probably only four” for Herrera to step away from the cashier, or for her to get out of way. Then, as Herrera leaned over the checkout counter and paused, Manion fired one round, but missed high.

“He started running out of the store, dropping one-dollar bills as he ran,” Manion said. “He was wearing sunglasses, but was very, very pale. I could see the gun, stainless or chrome, probably a .380-milimeter or similar. I couldn’t tell if he was on foot or had a car parked around the side.”

“I don’t think my blood pressure came up that much,” added Manion, who said he usually carries his gun whenever he leaves the house. “I did think for a moment that taking a shot at him could get me killed or that someone else might get hit. And, yes, I did think before firing that someone, somewhere, loves this kid. Everyone has a mother.”

Greene, the SAPD spokesman, said robbery detectives think the man Manion shot at was Herrera, and they’re working to see if Herrera might have been involved in numerous other armed robberies.

“There are still robbery victims out there waiting for us to do our job,” Greene said. “The investigation is still a work in progress, even if the guy we think did all the others is dead.”

Police on Friday arrested Trevon Deshon Atkinson, 18, who confessed to driving Herrera to the Popeyes after a hotel key card in Herrera’s pocket led officers to a hotel room rented by Atkinson, an arrest warrant affidavit states. The affidavit linked Herrera to a Dec. 5 robbery at a pawn shop because of evidence found in the room.

A San Antonio native, Manion said he had twice before had a gun pointed at him by robbers, here in the 1970s and again in the Virgin Islands in the early 1990s. Because gun owners are frequently stereotyped, Manion said he wanted the public to know that he was a Bexar County Democratic Party precinct chairman with political beliefs “to the left of Bernie Sanders.”

Liberals are misunderstood, he said. “The left is not trying to take away all the guns from the right. There is this concerted PR effort to discredit those with concealed-carry licenses and to really play it up if someone (with a license) does something stupid. I think most of those folks are the responsible ones.”

Manion said it had been years since he practiced shooting his gun.

Did he think about the possibility of retaliation if the robber had survived?

“That’s a valid consideration,” Manion said. “But not a fear.”

Police say that a father shot a man dead after that man threatened his family at a south-side Popeye's on Wednesday night.

The incident happened at the 800 block of Southeast Military Drive.

According to the San Antonio Police Department, a man walked into Popeye's and confronted a family and tried to rob them. Police say that, at that point, the man pulled out a gun and pointed it at the children.

Police say that the father of that family was a carrying a gun, though, and shot the man dead in the restaurant.

Employees locked the restaurant until law enforcement arrived on the scene.

Police have not yet identified the attempted robbery suspect.
