Coroner: Woman shoots, kills intruder armed with shotgun after home invasion

    GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said a Gaffney man was shot and killed during an alleged home invasion early Friday morning.

Fowler said a woman shot and killed Charles Shannon Alley, 41, of Tansi Trail after he forced his way into a home while armed and began fighting with another man in the house.

“According to witness statements Alley knocked on the door of a residence armed with a shotgun at 112 Piney Knob Drive in Gaffney about 3:25 a.m.,” Fowler said. “When a male answered the door, Alley allegedly pushed his way inside and began to fight with the resident while threatening to do harm to another male and female present also present While engaged in the altercation, Alley was allegedly shot in the head by the female resident.”

Tim Anthony, the homeowner, said when he opened the door, two men tried to force their way in.

“I went to crack the door open and they barged, at least two of them, barged through the door and knocked me through the wall,” Anthony said.

Anthony said his girlfriend fired two shots at Alley while they were struggling in the middle of the living room.

"It was either him or me," Anthony said.

Fowler said another man who was with Alley reportedly fled after the shooting.

Alley was pronounced dead at the scene.

FOX Carolina is working to get additional details.

Armed resident stops attempted home invasion
    Apr 20th, 2018 - 5:51pm (EDT)
INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Two people are facing charges after police say they tried to break into a home, but it was the man inside who stopped them.

It happened on Clemens Place in the Village of New Bethel subdivision in Franklin Township.

Keith and Kellie Durham were arrested for theft, burglary and possession of a controlled substance.

Police believe the pair broke into the home the night before when no one was there. When they returned Friday morning, the homeowner’s son was there and he was armed.

Police say he handcuffed and held the suspects at gunpoint until officers got there.

“I think this was a crime of opportunity and I think that some people don’t go about getting things the right way, like people who work and purchase their own things instead of stealing them,” said Becky Owens, who lives two doors down from the home.

Neighbors say they believe the home was targeted because a for sale sign in the front yard may have led the burglars to believe the home was unoccupied.

Hunt County homeowner holds burglary suspect at gunpoint until deputies arrive
    Friday, April 20th 2018, 2:23 pm EDT
    HUNT COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
A homeowner in Hunt County held a burglary suspect at gunpoint, Thursday, as they waited for deputies arrived.

According to the Hunt County Sheriff's Office, a homeowner in the 8800 block of County Road 3609 reported that they heard their dogs barking "more aggressively that usual." When they went to investigate they observed a male suspect entering one of their vehicles.

The homeowner retrieved a firearm from within their residence and approached the suspect. They held the suspect at gunpoint while calling 911, according to the HCSO.

According to the office, when deputies arrived at the scene they took the suspect into custody without incident.

Cole Jordan Lairsey, 17, of Quinlan was transported to the Hunt County Detention and charged with burglary of a vehicle and possession of a dangerous drug. His collective bond is set at $8,500.

"I am glad that everyone came out of this safe and that the homeowner did what needed to be done to make sure this suspect went to jail," said Sheriff Randy Meeks. "As far as Mr. Lairsey he was booked in wearing a T-shirt that read 'To save time, let's just assume I'm Never Wrong' and in this case we are going to say that he was in fact wrong... very wrong."

According to the office, items were retrieved that didn't belong to the homeowner and are believed to be stolen elsewhere. Deputies have not been able to return the recovered items.

The Sheriff's Office asks that if someone is missing property in or around this area to contact the Hunt County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division at (903) 453-6800.

Is this public service or public shaming?
    Isolde Raftery
This photo was posted to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office Facebook page earlier in the week.
In the photo above — posted by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook and Twitter this week – a man sits on the ground after being Tased by police. He wears nothing but black underwear briefs and a rosary around his neck. His small dog looks up at the camera.

The language accompanying the photo on social media is light:

If you mix heroin and methamphetamine, you might just end up:
    - wandering onto a farm with your dog
    - hitting yourself with sticker bushes
    - being tased by deputies
    - getting arrested in nothing but your underwear

The Facebook post goes into more detail: The man had been yelling at cars as he walked along Military Road, east of Puyallup. He took off his pants, made a crown of twigs and flogged himself with prickly brambles.

Police were summoned. The person who dialed 911 held the man at gunpoint as the man begged him to shoot, to “end his life.”

Several of us here at KUOW wondered if the tweet wasn’t too flippant. Here was a man being shamed for what appeared to be a drug addiction. It seemed like an old school public service announcement, hearkening back to “This is your brain on drugs” commercials of the late 1980s.

I called Detective Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office. Troyer, the longtime media spokesman for the department, who said he had written the Facebook post. He bristled when I suggested that the language might have been unfair to the man.

“Are we shaming him? Absolutely not,” Troyer said. “We have people killed down here because of people acting out on meth and heroin. It’s a reality of what’s happening.”

The man is not mentally ill, Troyer said. In jail, Troyer said the man told officers that he’d taken a “bad batch of something” and that he was sorry for his behavior.

Most of the commenters on Facebook and Twitter found the story funny, and added quips themselves. Or they wondered about the dog, named Sophie. (She is currently at the Humane Society as her owner sits in jail.)

A small number of commenters were offended.

“I don’t think it’s right to shame for any reason,” wrote Alli K. Doyle on Facebook. Doyle said she had been a mental health specialist in the Army. “It’s bullying, unproductive.”

I sent the Facebook post to professionals who work with drug addicts. Caleb Banta-Green, a professor at the School of Public Health at the University of Washington, specializes in drug abuse: “They appear to be trying to be funny,” he said.

IMO since the photo does not show his face, there is no public shaming. It is meant as a warning about the bad effects of a bad trip which it is.

What Do CDC’s Surveys Say About the Frequency of Defensive Gun Uses?
    12 Pages Posted: 26 Feb 2018

    Gary Kleck

Florida State University College of Criminology and Criminal Justice

    Date Written: February 14, 2018

    Abstract

In 1996, 1997, and 1998, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted large-scale national surveys asking about defensive gun use (DGU). They never released the findings, or even acknowledged they had studied the topic. I obtained the unpublished raw data and computed the prevalence of DGU. CDC’s findings indicated that an average of 2.46 million U.S. adults used a gun for self-defense in each of the years from 1996 through 1998 – almost exactly confirming the estimate for 1992 of Kleck and Gertz (1995). Possible reasons for CDC’s suppression of these findings are discussed.

Woman shoots, kills intruder she found inside her South Carolina apartment
Posted 11:38 am, April 21, 2018, by Web Staff

GREENVILLE, S.C. – A woman in South Carolina shot and killed a man accused of stalking her after authorities said he broke into her apartment.

The Charlotte Observer reported that 34-year-old Quentin Oliver was found dead with a gunshot wound to his chest at an apartment complex in Greenville County on Friday.

Authorities said the victim returned to her apartment after dropping her children off at school and the intruder was in her closet.

The victim’s uncle told WSPA that she fired her gun at the suspect after he charged at her.

He said his niece works at a night club and the suspect had threatened to harm her and her children.

“He couldn’t accept that ‘no means no,’” said Douglas Sweeney, the victim’s uncle. “I’m sorry that a person died off of this, but it is what it is. A person didn’t have no business breaking into someone’s place.”

Resident shoots, kills man who kicked in apartment door to get to ex-girlfriend
Resident not currently facing charges, police say

SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio police said an apartment resident is not facing charges for shooting a man who was trying to get to his ex-girlfriend and kicked in the resident's door.

According to San Antonio police, a man went to the Hutchins Palm Apartments in the 500 block of West Hutchins to talk to his ex-girlfriend, who was staying with friends who lived there. Police said she asked him to leave, but he refused. When the residents of the apartment returned, they also asked the man to leave multiple times. Police said one of the residents warned the man that he had a gun. At some point, police said, the man tried kicking in the front door and the resident fired two shots at the man. The man collapsed in the apartment parking lot and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, the resident is being questioned but is not facing any charges.

Brother of carjacking victim pulls gun on suspect
Police say they arrested Kevin Welch after he attempted to carjack a woman with a child in car

Albuquerque police say they arrested Kevin Welch, 40, after he punched a woman in the face while trying to carjack her with her child in the backseat near the area of Juan Tabo Boulevard NE and Constitution Avenue NE Friday night.

In a release, police said the victim and her brother pulled into a gas station in separate cars near the intersection. Both were engaged in a conversation when they say Welch’s suspicious behavior caused them to get back in their cars and leave.

Police say as the victim sat at red light at the intersection, Welch ran towards her car, opened the door and punched her in the face in an attempt to take her car.

The victim’s brother was behind her at the intersection and pointed his open carry gun at Welch, who then walked away. The brother followed Welch in his vehicle and watched him walk up to another woman and also punch her in the face.

Police say they caught up with Welch nearby and arrested him.

Welch is facing robbery charges and is being held on no bond.

Welch was arrested earlier this month for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon; that case is still pending.

A father shot a man at his daughter’s home in Santa Ana overnight as the intruder – the woman’s ex-boyfriend – tried to crawl through a window, police said.

Police responded to the house in the 1600 block of W. McFadden on Sunday, April 22 at 1:50 a.m. after receiving a domestic violence call, but the ex-boyfriend was not there when they arrived, Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

“Apparently, he returned later,” Bertagna said. “The father confronted the suspect as he was coming through a window.”

The wounded man was identified as Robert White, 38, of Garden Grove, Bertagna said. He was transported to a hospital. Bertagna said White did not live at the house.

The incident is being investigated. Additional details were not immediately available on Sunday.

    This story is developing.
