Shot that hit Omaha man accused of domestic assault was fired in self-defense, prosecutor says

    http://www.omaha.com/news/crime/shot...48d6a4a8c.html
A prosecutor said Friday that Anthony Evans had shown up at the house of his ex-girlfriend and his three children several times before the night of Aug. 2, when officers found him lying in the backyard, a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

The shot was fired in self-defense, said Eric Fabian of the Douglas County Attorney’s Office.

It came, Fabian said, moments after Evans attacked his girlfriend, throwing her to the ground and choking her, then hitting her with a metal pipe as she tried to flee.

Evans, 45, is charged with felony domestic violence assault and four counts of terroristic threats. A judge set bail for Evans on Friday at $125,000. Evans must pay 10 percent of that, or $12,500, to be released.

Fabian said the encounter on Aug. 2 began with Evans banging on the door of his ex-girlfriend’s house near 28th Avenue and Manderson Street, where she lived with other women.

He had shown up at the house several times that week to try to talk to the woman and his three children who lived there.

The ex-girlfriend hid the children in an upstairs bedroom and went to talk to Evans. That’s when he attacked her, threw her to the ground and choked her, Fabian said.

The woman was able to get away, Fabian said, but Evans came after her again, hitting her in the back and arm with a pipe and saying he was going to kill her and the other women who were there.

One of the other women had a firearm and told Evans to stop and back away, Fabian said. Evans said, “Go ahead and shoot me,” and continued swinging the pipe, the prosecutor said.

The woman fired the gun, hitting Evans in the lower abdomen, Fabian said.

Evans was discharged Wednesday from the Nebraska Medical Center, where he was treated for the gunshot wound. He was in a wheelchair for his Friday court appearance.

Evans’ ex-girlfriend suffered a broken arm and bruising.

Fabian said Evans has a felony conviction for attempted delivery of a controlled substance and has several convictions of misdemeanor assault.

Evans is set to have a preliminary hearing next month.

    Two for today.

This did not happen in America, but It is good to know that there are other countries out there that allow people to defend themselves. If this had happened in a country like Great Britain, I imagine the shooter would be going to jail.

Case against elderly man who shot burglars closed
82 year old Holocaust survivor who killed burglar and wounded another in self-defense will not be prosecuted.

    http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/233968
The prosecution decided to close the case against an elderly resident of Beit Yitzhak in central Israel who was suspected of shooting two Arab burglars who broke into his house.

One of the burglars was killed as a result of the shooting and the other was wounded.

The incident occurred last month, when two Arab burglars broke into a house at night and attempted to break into a safe in a bedroom. The burglars were survived when the homeowner, an 82 year old Holocaust survivor, returned home.

The burglars advanced on the homeowner, one holding a pickaxe and the other holding a chisel. The homeowner defended himself with the gun he has a permit to carry, killing one of his attackers.

The case was investigated by the police, and in the end the state attorney's office decided to close the case against the homeowner.

Robber On Spree Held At Gunpoint By Resident
A man accused in a Friday home invasion went on a spree until an armed resident and Pasco deputies reportedly stopped him.

    https://patch.com/florida/newportric...point-resident
HUDSON, FL — A 48-year-old man faces a long list of criminal charges after Pasco County deputies say he kept them and residents of a Hudson condominium complex hopping on Friday morning.

According to the agency, deputies received a call just before 2:30 a.m. April 7 that a man had broken into a condo in the 5900 block of Sea Ranch Drive. The man was confronted by the homeowner and ultimately fled out the back when deputies arrived.

“While setting a perimeter, another burglary was reported in the next building,” the email said. Deputies then set a perimeter around that building, but the fire alarm went off.

As residents began evacuating the building, deputies kept searching for their suspect.

In the chaos, deputies say they heard a woman on the seventh floor of a building “screaming for help and that she was being robbed,”

K9 units swung into action and found the man being held at gunpoint by a resident, the agency said.

The man was accused of forcing his way into that condo and trying to take items from the woman’s purse. He’s also accused of taking a fire extinguisher, setting off the alarm and breaking windows out in several condos and two vehicles.

Victor Caudill, who has no known address, was taken into custody. Caudill faces home invasion robbery, occupied burglary and four criminal mischief charges, the agency said. He was being medically cleared Friday morning before being booked into the Pasco County Jail.

Chambersburg man charged after ramming vehicle, leading driver to shoot gun

    http://www.publicopiniononline.com/s...gun/492679001/
CHAMBERSBURG - A Chambersburg man is charged with aggravated assault for allegedly driving his vehicle into another man's vehicle, leading to the man shooting a gun to defend himself.

Edwin Jovan Lopez-Gonzalez, 25, is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

According to court documents, police received reports of shots fired around midnight July 18 in the area of Nitterhouse Drive. While police were unable to locate the source of the noise, a man arrived at the police station 30 minutes later talking about an incident involving Lopez-Gonzalez and a shooting.

The man said that when he got off work around midnight, a man later identified as Lopez-Gonzalez came up to the driver's side door and beat on the glass, according to court documents. The man said he knew of Lopez-Gonzalez because of a past confrontation.

The man did not speak with Lopez-Gonzalez when Lopez-Gonzalez approached on July 18, deciding to drive away to avoid confrontation. But Lopez-Gonzalez allegedly pursued him in an SUV, slamming into the rear of the man's vehicle, court documents state.

Lopez-Gonzalez then allegedly pulled up along the man's car, hitting the driver's side and blocking the driver's inside. The man said he was in fear for his life, so he defended himself with his Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun.

The man said he was unable to open his door more than a few inches, so he pointed the gun out of the opening and fired four shots into the SUV, according to court documents. The man then fled the scene, then reported the incident to police.

Police found Lopez-Gonzalez' SUV behind a residence in the 300 block of Lincoln Way East. The vehicle had four bullet holes in it, matching the angle described by the man. The SUV also had heavy front-end damage and passenger-side damage matching the reported crashes.

Police also found that the man's vehicle had damage to the rear and driver's side door consistent with the damage of Lopez-Gonzalez' SUV.

Lopez-Gonzalez is being held at Franklin County Jail on $100,000 bail.

Brunswick bicyclist pulls gun on suspected shooters

    http://www.actionnewsjax.com/news/lo...ters/581100776
BRUNSWICK, Ga. - A bicyclist with a gun defended himself after being shot at by three people in a car. But here’s the thing – the man and two teens in the car had paint guns. The man on the bike had a real gun.

According to the report, the father moved to the side of the road to let the car pass. But as it did, officers say a teen leaned out of the car and started shooting at him. The man fell off his bike. Police say the man then pulled out his gun, a Glock, and fired three shots at the car as it was driving away.

“I probably would’ve done the same thing he did,” Wright said.

The man told police he thought it was a real gun at the time and was afraid for his life.

    “Very dangerous,” she says.

According to the report, the man has a valid Georgia concealed carry permit and isn’t facing criminal charges.

This is one where the person defending himself was a felon and not suppose to have a gun. It was found to be a legitimate case of self defense, but he is being charged as a felon in possession of an illegal gun.

Prosecutors say man arrested in Addison Ave shooting acted in self-defense

    http://magicvalley.com/news/local/cr...dd87a70bf.html
TWIN FALLS — A Twin Falls man who was arrested in connection with another man’s shooting death in May acted in self-defense and will not face homicide charges the Twin Falls County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said Friday.

However, Billy Duane Johnson is still charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors said Friday that William Newton Scott, 38, of Twin Falls, went to Johnson’s home next to the Creekside Trailer Court on Addison Avenue West that evening on May 26 with another adult male and a teenage male to confront Johnson, 45. During the confrontation, authorities said, Scott attacked Johnson, who during a short struggle used his gun to shoot Scott in the chest. Scott died at the scene.

“A person has the right to use deadly force when he reasonably believes it is necessary to defend himself, his family or other persons, or his home from attack,” Twin Falls County Prosecuting Attorney Grant Loebs said in a statement. “We concluded after looking at all the evidence that this was what happened in this case.”

The video could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported.
Police and prosecutors made this decision “after an extensive review of all the evidence” according to the statement, interviewing both witnesses and Johnson.

“This event is an example of several poor decisions leading to tragedy,” said police Chief Craig Kingsbury. “Our agency investigated this event thoroughly and the evidence supports that Mr. Johnson acted in self-defense when he shot Mr. Scott. The Twin Falls County Prosecuting Attorney was consulted every step of the way during this investigation.”

NW Florida homeowner shoots burglar with AK-47

    http://www.nwfdailynews.com/news/201...lar-with-ak-47
A Panama City Beach man was shot early Sunday morning after waking a homeowner during a burglary.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving a 911 call in reference to a burglary in progress at 1838 Pettis Road at approximately 2:45 a.m. Sunday. The complainant stated she heard a loud noise and woke her husband, who found three male subjects actively burglarizing their vehicles located in their front yard.
The homeowner advised he investigated where the sound originated from and observed three white males in the homeowners’ vehicles. One of those vehicles contained a firearm.

The suspects were confronted by the homeowner, who was armed with an AK-47, and began to flee to their vehicle.
Statement from Washington County Sheriff’s Office
During this time, a suspect, later identified as Tristen Wilson, 19, of Panama City Beach, turned toward the homeowner in a manner that made the homeowner fear he was about to be shot, and the homeowner began to fire his rifle.
At this time, the suspects reportedly fled in a black vehicle that possibly had a flat tire. The homeowner also reported the firearm that was in their vehicle was then missing.

Deputies immediately responded finding a black 4-door Honda, sitting in the middle of Pettis Road with three male occupants. Upon initiating a traffic stop, deputies ordered the suspects to exit the vehicle at which time they observed the front passenger, identified as Wilson, drop a small baggie of marijuana onto the ground.

According to deputies, it was “apparent [the suspects] were all under the influence of either alcohol or drugs,” and they were not following commands.
Once all suspects were detained, Wilson advised deputies he had been shot. Washington County EMS responded immediately and transported Wilson to Bay Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound to the leg.
Upon further investigation, a loaded 9 mm handgun was found inside the suspects’ vehicle. The homeowner’s handgun was later found in the wood line nearby.

Kevin Taylor, 15, was transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice on the charges of grand theft of a firearm, two counts of burglary of a dwelling, structure or conveyance, and obstructing justice/tampering in felony 1st degree proceeding.

Conrad VonBlankenburg, 19, of Panama City Beach, was taken into custody and transported to the Washington County Jail on the charges of grand theft of a firearm, two counts of burglary of a dwelling, structure or conveyance, and obstructing justice/tampering in felony 1st degree proceeding.

Wilson is also being charged with grand theft of a firearm, two counts of burglary of a dwelling, structure or conveyance, obstructing justice/tampering in felony 1st degree proceeding, and possession of marijuana less than 20 grams.
“The safety of our community is our priority and we are thankful that this did not end worse than it did,” says Washington County Sheriff Kevin Crews. “We will not tolerate homes or property being burglarized or the danger that comes with it in this county. We are thankful the homeowners are safe after this incident and the perpetrators are behind bars.”

Washington County Sheriff Kevin Crews urges anyone with knowledge of crimes being committed to contact the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at 850-638-6111. Tips may also be reported anonymously by calling 850-638-TIPS (8477) or by emailing tips@wcso.us.

Ohio farmer holds murder suspects at gunpoint until deputies arrive

    http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index...der_suspe.html
ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Two teens are facing charges in connection with the shooting death of man, arrested after they were held at gunpoint by a farmer who saw them acting suspiciously.

"They came from the back side of my pond where the dock used to be," Larry Roberts tells WLWT Channel 5. "I keep the 12-gauge pump around for reasons like that."

The two suspects, Eric Brown, 19, and an unidentified 17-year-old male, approached Roberts and offered him money if they would give them a ride, according to WCPO Channel 9.

"They had stacks of money," Roberts said.

Instead, Roberts had the two teens lie face-down on his driveway as he held them at gunpoint. He tells WCPO that one of the teens began crawling toward his car, where his 2-year-old grandchild was in the backseat.

"I said, 'If you move again, if you blink your eye, I am blowing your brains out,'" Roberts said.

He called 911 as he continued to hold them at gunpoint, waiting for deputies with the Butler County Sheriff's Office to arrive.

"Come and get both of them," Roberts can be heard telling a dispatcher. "Send an officer to get them. I got my 12-gauge pump on them. They are both lying here in my driveway. One doesn't have any shoes on and they are acting stupid."

The two teens are suspects in the murder of Maurice Chatman, 23, who was found shot to death outside a car at about 6:40 p.m. Monday, reports say. Police believe the suspects ran from the car and ended up on Roberts' property nearby.

Roberts was not aware of the shooting when he encountered the two suspects, reports say.

Brown has been charged with having weapons under disability, a felony, obstructing justice and tampering with evidence, the Journal-News reports. He is being held on a $75,000 bond. The 17-year-old male is charged with obstructing justice and tampering with evidence.

The case remains under investigation and more charges are expected to be filed.

While Held At Gunpoint, Verizon Clerk Shoots Robbery Suspect

    http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2017/0...eights-police/
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Police in the south metro say a Verizon clerk with a permit to carry drew his gun and fired Thursday while being held up by two robbery suspects, one of which is still at large.

The Inver Grove Heights Police Department says the shooting happened shortly after 11 a.m. at the Verizon store on the 9000 block of Cahill Avenue. Two suspects approached the clerk in the back of the store, and one brandished a gun.

While being held at gunpoint, the clerk took out his gun and shot the armed suspect multiple times, police say. The suspect was found by police with multiple gunshot wounds and brought to Region’s Hospital for treatment.

The other suspect fled the store after the shooting and drove off. He remains at large, and police have yet to release a description.

It’s unclear if the clerk was harmed in the attempted robbery, but police say he is OK.

The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 651-450-2525.

Man who drove neighbor’s dead body to lawyer’s office won’t be charged

    http://www.nwfdailynews.com/news/201...ont-be-charged
FORT MYERS — A grand jury has decided it won’t charge a Florida man who drove his dead neighbor’s body to his lawyer’s office, saying he had killed the other man in self-defense.

The grand jury decided Monday it would not charge 54-year-old John Marshall in the March 2015 death of 65-year-old Theodore Hubbell Jr. Marshall said he acted in self-defense, and jurors found there was insufficient evidence to rebut that.

Marshall had bought property in the rural island community of Bokeelia, where he planned to build a home.

Marshall’s attorney at the time, Robert Harris, said Hubbell didn’t want Marshall to build, and the men had argued. Several days later, according to Harris, Hubbell returned with a gun. Harris said a struggle over the weapon ensued and ended with Hubbell being shot.
