Man sentenced for home invasion that led to murder
Daily Journal Staff Report Jun 16, 2018 Updated 1 hr ago 0
A man who pleaded no contest to felony attempted murder for his involvement in an attempted burglary of a San Mateo home invasion in 2013 was sentenced to 30 years, eight months in state prison Friday, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

Close to five years after Bunn Vo, 27, and two accomplices engaged in a burglary-turned-gun fight that left one of them dead, he was finally sentenced by Judge Jonathan Karesh to a lengthy prison term Friday. Having remained in custody on no bail status, Vo will receive 2,006 days credit for time served, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors said Vo, who was 24 at the time of the incident, along with 21-year-old Edwin Lee and 23-year-old Bryant Ma, entered a home on the 1500 block of Lodi Avenue on Sept. 4, 2013, and demanded money from a safe.

The victim, who was held at gunpoint, pulled a gun on the men. A shootout ensued that left Lee, Ma and the robbery victim injured. Vo and Lee allegedly dragged Ma’s body to an SUV parked outside the home and drove to a San Jose hospital where Ma was pronounced dead, according to prosecutors.

Under California law, Lee and Vo were eligible be prosecuted for murder for creating the dangerous situation that led to the death of their accomplice, but those charges were dropped against Lee, whose defense attorney said previously that there was no evidence he fired any shots during the gun battle.

In the fall of 2015, Lee pleaded no contest to charges including felony residential burglary and was sentenced to 20 years and four months in state prison without possibility of parole, according to prosecutors.

Cape Coral neighbors on guard after man says he was assaulted by home invaders
    CAPE CORAL
Neighbors in Cape Coral are in a state of shock after a loud burst of gunfire interrupted a quiet summer afternoon on their street Friday.

It happened along the 600 block of SE 17th Terrace around 5 p.m.

“I felt like I wanted to start crying,” said neighbor Toni Chmielewski.

Penni Herrick also heard the shots but didn’t realize what was happening until hours later.

“Like big bangs. I didn’t put two and two together. I just didn’t think about it,” Herrick said.

According to the owner of the home, he says he was assaulted by men attempting to steal his pain medication. That’s when he got his own gun and fired at the invaders, but they were able to get away.

Cape Coral Police say they’re investigating the scene as a “shots fired” call. They say the homeowner was taken from the house to the hospital after the incident. He has since been released.

“I’m uncomfortable. I’m only right down the street here. So it kind of makes me a little nervous,” Herrick said.

Neighbors say they want to know more about what exactly happened and plan to keep their guards up until then.

“Now I’m going to be a little bit more on the lookout,” Herrick said.

At this time, they say no one is in custody in connection with what happened at the house.

Two arrested one shot after threatening homeowners with AK-47
Posted 9:36 pm, June 16, 2018, by Daniel Rubio, Updated at 09:47AM, June 17, 2018

MEMPHIS, Tenn. —Two men were arrested after they held up three people in a home early Saturday morning, Memphis Police said.

According to police, Raymone Hollins and Zavier Palmer, armed with an AK-47, broke into the home in the 4100 block of Leweir Street at around 1 a.m.

The two went to the home after a disagreement, police said.

Palmer was said to have waved the gun around yelling threats at the three victims.

Police said one victim attempted to call police, but Palmer took the phone away from her and started strangling her.

Another victim ran to a bedroom, got a handgun, and shot Palmer to protect herself and the other two victims.

Hollins carried Palmer out of the house and drove away in their Mercedes, but police later found them at a fire station on Overton Crossing.

Palmer was taken to the hospital and Hollins was detained by police.

Police said they found the AK-47 in their Mercedes.

Hollins and Palmer are charged with three counts of aggravated assault and burglary.

Mississippi man arrested in Eureka after homeowner holds him at gunpoint
    By Tony Krausz1 hr ago
A 36-year-old Eureka man who encountered a stranger on his screened-in porch early May 20 held the man at gunpoint until police arrived, Eureka Police reported.

Police said the alleged intruder is 25 and from Little Rock, Miss. Police were called to the home in the 1400 block of West Fifth Street at 3:11 a.m.

A 36-year-old Eureka woman, who also lives at the house, told authorities her dog’s barking woke her up. When she went into the kitchen, the woman said she heard tapping on the back door and saw the silhouette of a man through the window, the report said.

She called for her husband, who told her to call 911 and then went into the screened-in porch with a handgun and ordered the Mississippi man to lie on his stomach on the floor, according to the report.

When police arrived, the Mississippi man was lying on the floor and was not wearing shoes or socks and had no personal belongings. The man’s shoes, socks and cell phone were found by the fence on the east side of the property, the report said.

The Mississippi man allegedly told officers he had blacked out and didn’t know how he got to the home, and he also claimed he may have been drugged, according to the report.

The man was arrested and taken to the Police Station where he was booked and released, Capt. David Wilson said. Eureka Police will seek charges against the man through the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Office for second-degree burglary, first-degree trespassing and peeping in windows.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Police have identified the man shot and killed during an attempted home invasion at the Mesa Ridge apartment complex on Saturday morning as 27-year-old Johnny Julian Bentacu.

Officers arrived at the apartment complex around 11:15 a.m. and found Bentacu dead with a gunshot wound inside of the apartment, officer Simon Drobik said.

Drobik said that Bentacu was shot as he tried to force his way into the apartment of an unidentified person. No charges are currently filed against the shooter.

“It’s possible self defense, but it’s up to the DA,” Drobik said.

Martin Bentacu, brother of Johnny Julian Bentacu, is wanted for questioning by the police.

Police are now searching for the brother of Bentacu, Martin Bentacu, 28. Drobik said that Martin was there during the shooting and is wanted for questioning.

One person was detained for questioning, but no arrests have been made, Drobik said.

Drobik said a search warrant was served on the apartment, and one firearm was taken.

This is the third violent death at the apartment complex in one month; a mother and daughter were stabbed to death there on May 24.

If anyone has any comments, I started a separate thread on this one about the guy defending himself throwing his gun to the side after shooting the other person and a friend of the other person picking up the gun and taking control of the situation.

POCATELLO MAN ARRESTED AFTER BEING SHOT BY HIS NEIGHBOR

POCATELLO -- The man who was shot by his neighbor on the city's west side Saturday night ended up being the one going to jail for the incident.

Police said they arrested Bryan Huff, 29, of Pocatello, after he was released from Portneuf Medical Center early Sunday morning. Huff was treated at PMC for the gunshot wound to the arm he received in the 1000 block of West Clark Street during a dispute with a neighbor around 9:40 p.m. Saturday.

Huff has been booked into Bannock County Jail on a charge of felony aggravated battery for allegedly running at his neighbor while armed with a steel pipe in the neighbor's yard, police said.

The neighbor fired a pistol twice at Huff in self-defense and one of the shots hit Huff in the arm, police said.

The man who shot Huff threw the gun after opening fire and Huff and him then became engaged in a fistfight which ended with the man pinning Huff to the ground, police said.

While the man and Huff were fighting, a female friend of Huff's retrieved the pistol. She then pointed the gun at the man and ordered him to release the pinned Huff, police said.

The man complied and everyone returned to their respective houses and dialed 911.

They weren't the only ones calling the police.

Pocatello police said they received dozens of phone calls reporting the shooting.

Police had actually responded to a shouting match between Huff and the same neighbor earlier on Saturday. Police said they separated the two following that incident and ordered them not to communicate with each other for the rest of the day but obviously that didn't happen.

The subsequent Saturday night confrontation began with Huff and the neighbor yelling at each other. Then others from both households joined in the shouting match and shortly thereafter Huff allegedly grabbed the steel pipe and charged at the man, police said.

When police arrived, they quickly located the wounded Huff as well as the man who shot him. Huff was transported to PMC via a Pocatello Fire Department ambulance and police began interviewing everyone involved in the incident to piece together what happened.

If convicted of felony aggravated battery, Huff faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Police said they aren't sure what triggered Saturday's confrontations between Huff and his neighbor but one witness said the disagreement started over a dog that belongs to one of the men.

The name of the man who shot Huff has not yet been released and police said he will not be charged with a crime because he was defending himself on his own property.
