Suspect shot after running over bondsmen while fleeing in SC
    Paige Pauroso
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Two bondsmen and a suspect are recovering after an incident that took place Thursday night at a home near Clover, SC.

The two bondsmen, whose identities have not been released, were trying to find 24-year-old Christopher Davidson for failure to appear in court in Gaston County.

Davidson was in his car when the two men confronted him.

According to the York County Sheriff’s Department, Davidson ran over one of the bondsman and struck the other with his car.

At some point one of the bondsman shot at the suspect twice, shooting him once in both arms.

When deputies got on scene, Davidson had a tourniquet on his arm and all three men were lying on the ground. They are all expected to fully recover.

Once Davidson has recovered, he will be return to York County to face charges of assault relating to this incident. He still has previous charges in North Carolina as well.

Neither of the bondsmen will face charges since they were acting in self-defense, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Another bail bondsman working in South Carolina, but not related to this case, said this kind of incident isn’t typical but the job can be dangerous.

“When a bondsman is going after someone like that, they’re usually a fugitive at some point because they’ve failed to appear in court,” said Wesley Baker of 007 Baker Bail Bonds. “You know the person is already trying to feel from the law, so being really cautious. We have to be.”

Baker said being a bondsman means working with law enforcement to make sure justice is served the right people show up to court when they’re supposed to.

Jury acquits Montana man of murder in deadly shooting
KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — A Montana man has been acquitted in the deadly shooting of another man who was in a relationship with his ex-wife.

The Flathead Beacon reports the jury found 30-year-old Daniel Chance Blixt not guilty of murder Wednesday following a three-day trial in Polson.

Defense attorney Amanda Marvin says Blixt shot Matthew Darnell in self-defense.

    advertisement
Court documents say Blixt had met with his ex-wife in Pablo in February to give money for the care of their children.

The documents say the two got into an argument and Darnell started running toward Blixt.

Marvin says Blixt "waited until the last possible moment to shoot."

The newspaper was unable to reach the Lake County Attorney's Office for comment.

What About Firearms That Saved Lives Last Month?
    Written by Bob Adelmann

Media hysteria over recent mass shootings just reached new highs. Rather than rehashing the ghastly atrocities committed over the past weeks, the Associated Press instead recounted the number of shootings committed since the first of the year and loudly lamented in its headline: “U.S. Mass Shootings This Year Nearly Reach 2018 Levels, and It’s Only August!”

It proclaimed: “Just seven months into 2019, the U.S. has experienced almost as many mass killings as occurred in all of 2018.… Mass killings so far this year [totals] 23, leaving 131 people dead. There were 25 mass killings in 2018 … according to a database complied by the Associated Press, Northeastern University and USA Today.”

The AP went on to explain how it defined “mass killings” — now apparently no longer referred to as “mass shootings” — “as killings involving four or more fatalities, not including the killer. What the AP failed to explain is how they missed reporting on those incidents where firearms were used to prevent injuries and killings.

Back when Obama was president, he spent $10 million of taxpayer dollars in having the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) look into the matter. He no doubt was hoping that the CDC would bolster his anti-gun, anti-Second Amendment agenda with proof that there were so many mass shootings that something had to be done about removing firearms from the citizenry.

Instead the CDC came out on the side of common sense, reporting that “self-defense [using a firearm] can be an important crime deterrent.” It went on to claim that defensive uses by potential victims are “at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual [self-defense] uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year.”

This is droll. “At least as common”? Although every death and wound suffered by victims in the last weeks grieves the heart, the media silence over firearm usage that prevented such deaths and injuries is deafening.

Consider the following reported by local media but unreported by the national media:

On July 3, in Summerville, South Carolina, concerned neighbors went to check out loud noises that they thought might be someone breaking into a local church. They found the trespasser who began to attack one of the neighbors who, using a firearm, shot him in self-defense.

On July 10, in Summerfield, Florida a disabled 61-year-old homeowner awoke to hearing four armed men who had just broken into his home. He used a firearm to kill two of them and send the other two fleeing the scene. They were later apprehended. Although the homeowner himself was wounded in the melee, he survived.

On July 15, in Atlanta, Georgia a man began assaulting a woman in an apartment complex. A second man intervened and tried to stop the assault. The attacker then turned his attention to him and the second man defended himself using a firearm.

On July 16, in San Diego, a man armed with a knife broke into a home and began stabbing the 54-year-old homeowner. Present was his son who was able to end the attack by killing the attacker using his father’s firearm.

Also on July 16, in Lehi, Utah, an intruder was shot after breaking into a home. He was armed with a knife. The homeowner shot the man using a firearm.

On July 18, in Phoenix, Arizona a man was filling his car with gas when two suspects demanded the keys to his car. One of them threatened the owner with a knife. The owner pulled a firearm and shot him. The other suspect fled.

On July 19, in Seattle, Washington an armed man tried to break into a home while the homeowner was asleep. She awoke in time to retrieve a firearm and shot and wounded him. She escaped injury. The burglar was reported to be in critical condition at a local hospital.

On July 22, in New Orleans, Louisiana a man sitting in his car late at night was accosted by an armed stranger who attempted a carjacking. The driver pulled a firearm and shot the attacker who fled the scene.

On July 23, in Albuquerque, New Mexico a man who tried to break into a home was shot by the homeowner with a firearm.

On July 26, in Virginia Beach, Virginia two armed men wearing masks entered a 7-Eleven store demanding money. A customer who was waiting to check out used a firearm to end the attempted robbery. One suspect was killed, the other wounded while the two clerks behind the country were unharmed.

On July 27, in High Point, North Carolina, a woman being assaulted by an ax-wielding man who had entered her home shot him, killing him instantly.

On July 31, in Nashville, Tennessee a criminal with a long history of violent crime began shooting at an Uber driver’s automobile to exact revenge on his passenger. The driver defended himself and his passenger by shooting the attacker with a firearm.

None of these thwarted attacks were mentioned by the Associated Press. The AP was no doubt following the old journalistic adage, “If it bleeds, it leads.” But if it doesn’t bleed, or doesn’t conform to its anti-gun agenda, it doesn’t even exist.

Mauling victim's uncle says dogs attacked him so he shot one
    Sarah RahalUpdated 8:53 a.m. ET Aug. 24, 2019
Detroit — Two days after 9-year-old Emma Hernandez was fatally mauled by three pit bulls, her uncle said he found himself facing a similar threat.

Jesse Lopez, 30, said he was left shaken Wednesday morning after he left his home and was attacked by two German shepherds that belong to a neighbor.

Emma was fatally mauled by three pit bulls in an alley close to her home Monday afternoon as frantic neighbors rushed to help, throwing bricks and whatever else could be used to try to stop the dogs. The attack was so horrific that counseling services were offered to emergency responders.

Lopez said at 8 a.m. Wednesday, he was walking to his truck on his way to work when the German shepherds, hidden behind his Ram pickup, accosted him.

"Once the dogs made eye contact with me, it wasn't even a second before it charged," he said. "I took off and they came running at me."

Lopez said one of the dogs grabbed his pants and scratched him.

"I kicked it and it ran behind my wife's car and then I turned around and the other was right behind me," he said.

Lopez, a CPL holder, said he pulled out his firearm and shot at the dog. The shot missed and when the dog attempted to attack him again, he fired a single shot, striking the dog in its side, he said

"Neighbors and wife called the police," he said. "I couldn't — I was on the floor shaking."

Lopez has lived on the 6300 block of Faust for nine years. He said he was aware of the neighbor's dogs but never got close enough to interact with them.

"The owner came to apologize and said they never had a problem and that they are never let out, which isn't true," he said. "I've seen them wandering around the neighborhood before and so have the neighbors."

Detroit police and Animal Control were sent to the scene. No charges were filed against Lopez or the owner of the dogs.

A police spokesman said Lopez kicked one of the dogs and one of the animals bit his pants, adding that he is a valid CPL holder. The incident is under investigation.

The injured dog was taken to the vet by the owner, who Lopez says, is expecting to get both back from Animal Control.

"Those dogs do not need to be back on the streets," Lopez said. "They are aggressive dogs that need to be euthanized. The dogs didn't just randomly walk by; they tried to attack me."

Lopez, who attended Emma's visitation Friday, said the coincidence was upsetting.

"I've known her since she was a baby, it's horrible what happened to her and it's crazy that this happened," he said. "It's a coincidence that it's family but what's more upsetting is that no one is doing anything about these dogs."

The girl's funeral is at noon Saturday at St. Cunegunda Church in Detroit.

Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones said she too was shocked by the vicious mauling of Emma. She said after a similar fatal mauling of Xavier Strickland, 4, in 2015, she pushed for an overhaul of the city's Animal Control ordinance.

Jones said more effort is needed to address the city's dangerous animal problem and there should be a collaborative action to eliminate stray animals in neighborhoods.

"We need to increase enforcement and strengthen laws against dog fighting," she said. "We need stronger rules on outdoor fencing, leashes and control of animals in our community.

"While I respect the rights of residents to have pets, the breeding of dangerous animals, lax care and the associated penalties must be dealt with definitively."

    Lopez agreed.

"And it's not the animals' fault," he said. "More needs to be done about inspections and licensing of these owners."

Police: Convenience store security guard shoots man in self-defense after nearly hit with didgeridoo

TULSA, Okla. – Police in Tulsa are investigating after a shooting at a gas station overnight.

Officers responded to a QuikTrip near 15th and Denver in Tulsa at around 1 a.m. Sunday for a shooting call.

When police arrived, they found a man on the ground who had been shot in the groin.

Police say the security guard told them the man was swinging a large wooden club, which later was determined to be a didgeridoo, at him and also had a knife.

The security guard said he shot the man in self-defense.

According to FOX 23, police reviewed surveillance video and say the security guard’s story matched the video.

The man’s condition is unknown at this time.

FLINT, MI – A man is in critical condition after he was shot by a female homeowner during what Flint police are saying was an attempted break-in.

Officers with the Flint Police Department responded Sunday, Aug. 25 to the 2300 block of Kellar Avenue, between Dayton Street and Welch Boulevard, for a report of shots fired.

An initial investigation by Flint police revealed the man had fled the Kellar Avenue home where he’d attempted to break into a residence and was shot by the homeowner.

The man was later found at a single-vehicle crash near Dayton Street and Brownell Boulevard, less than one mile from the home.

No additional suspects are at large, Flint police said.

Teen gang member caught after being shot during Louisa County home invasion

18-year-old could spend 30 years in prison after being convicted

    Keith Saunders-Mallory
LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — An 18-year-old who admitted to being in a gang could spend 30 years in prison after being convicted in Louisa County Circuit Court for an attempted robbery in May. According to a release, Keith Saunders-Mallory was caught after he was “shot in his buttocks” by the homeowner he was trying to rob.

Mallory reportedly kicked his way into a Louisa home that was in a remote area of the county on May 9 “with the intent to rob the homeowner.” A release from Robert M. Wood, the county’s deputy commonwealth’s attorney, said that the homeowner defended his property with a shotgun during the robbery attempt.

When Mallory attempted to run from the home, he was “shot in his buttocks with bird shot by the victim,” the release said. He was then detained by the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office and admitted to authorities that the gang he was in required him to be involved in a home invasion in order for him to get out of the gang.

“The Defendant is lucky the victim only had bird shot in his shotgun. There are a lot of hunters in Louisa County and when you break into a home you don’t know if the home owner is going to be armed,” Louisa County Detective Mark Foster, who caught Mallory, said of the convictions. “Our community takes gang activity extremely seriously and those involved must know that the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office will make every effort ensure gang activity does not pay.”

Mallory was convicted of burglary with intent to commit robbery and street gang participation. He could face 30 years in prison and is scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 31, 2019, the release said.

Man shot by off-duty SFPD officer in El Cerrito had attacked cop with rock, police say
    Local // Crime

A man shot by an off-duty San Francisco police officer was arrested on suspicion of assaulting the officer, who has been placed on paid administrative leave while the department’s internal affairs division investigates, authorities said Monday.

The shooting occurred at about 10 p.m. Sunday outside a green, six-unit building with a locked gate at the corner of Moeser Lane and Kearney Street, according to El Cerrito police.

The officer was identified by KTVU as Roderick Suguitan. His attorney, Nicole Pifari, told The Chronicle her client acted in self-defense Sunday.

“Obviously, the investigations into this matter are ongoing,” she said. “However, I'm confident that when all the facts are in, the evidence will show the officer was acting lawfully to protect his own life last night, and did what he needed to do to survive a violent encounter.”

The SFPD awarded Suguitan a medal of valor in 2010 for shooting a man who allegedly charged at police with a machete. The man died.

In this latest incident, Thomas Vincent Whalen, 44, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon or instrument of a peace officer, El Cerrito police said. His bail was set at $75,000. Police had not located any witnesses. El Cerrito police said Whalen attacked the off-duty officer with a rock.

Gary Sterman, who lives with his husband in the building, said Suguitan, his neighbor, apparently went to investigate loud banging on the gate to the building’s courtyard. A loud scuffle followed and then two gunshots, Sterman said.

“All I know is he was attacked,” he said.

Neighbors have had problems with homeless people using the complex’s front yard to inject drugs and go to the bathroom, “but nothing like this,” Sterman said.

Police said Whalen is a transient.

Alan Suo, a UC Berkeley student who lives across Kearney Street, said he was getting ready for bed when he heard two shots. Police arrived minutes later.

He said that despite the busy nature of the neighborhood, it seemed mostly peaceful.

“I’ve never heard shooting here,” Suo said.

The man struck by gunfire was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, De La Campa said. He is expected to survive.

San Francisco police announced the internal affairs probe Monday afternoon. Authorities from El Cerrito and Contra Costa County are conducting their own investigations.

INVESTIGATORS: LIMESTONE COUNTY MAN SHOT, KILLED SON IN SELF DEFENSE, WILL NOT BE CHARGED

Investigators say the father in a fatal Limestone County shooting will not face charges. They say the shooting that happened on Corrie Lane in Athens appears to have been in self defense.

Deputies received the call around 9:20 p.m. Sunday.

WAAY 31 spoke with neighbors of the man who, investigators say, shot and killed his son.

“I just welcomed an 86-year-old woman and told her there was no reason to be afraid, that this street was safe, and that I’ve never felt unsafe," Brenda Haraway said.

Haraway told WAAY 31 she has lived on Corrie Lane for 25 years and never imagined a shooting would happen just across the street.

“I heard sirens and when I hear sirens, I always make it a habit to pray," Haraway said. "And, then, I realized the sirens were closer and there were blue lights.”

Haraway said the blue lights were in her friends’ driveway.

“I love them, I’m praying for them," she said. "Mr. and Mrs. Adams are good people. They’ve been married over fifty years and I know they love their children.”

According to investigators, 70-year-old James Adams shot and killed his son, 44-year-old Alfred Adams, after an argument.

Investigators said the father went to his room to go to bed and his son, Alfred, opened the door and entered the room. That's when, they said, James shot his son in the chest.

It’s something neighbors still can’t wrap their heads around.

“I’m sure it had to be a self-defense kind of thing, because that would never happen," Cheryl Trotter said. "They’re a fun-loving family.”

“It can happen to any family," Haraway added. "We have to get God back in our lives and in our families. Our children need God so very, very desperately.”

In the meantime, neighbors told WAAY 31 they’ll be praying for the family involved.

“This street is going to be all behind them," Trotter said. "Prayers for them, please, because they’re the sweetest couple.”
