Neighbor holds trespassers at gunpoint until Chico police arrive

Chico >> Chico police Wednesday arrested two people on charges of trespassing on a vacant home after a neighbor held the suspects at gunpoint while waiting for officers to arrive, police said.

The incident happened about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at a vacant house undergoing renovations in the 500 block of West Seventh Street south of Chico State University.

A neighbor in the area, knowing the house was supposed to be vacant, saw people inside the home, Chico police Sgt. Ben Love said.

The neighbor, who was outside the home, then produced a semiautomatic pistol, holding the people inside at gunpoint until police arrived and telling them to stay where they were, Love said.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the neighbor pointed his handgun at the people inside, but the police sergeant said the neighbor displayed the gun.

Officers arrived on the scene shortly afterward and determined two people — a man and a woman — were allegedly inside the home without permission of the owner, Love said. They were arrested on suspicion of trespassing.

The neighbor legally owns the handgun he used to hold the suspects at gunpoint, Love said.

But the sergeant added that while what the neighbor did was legal, it was not advisable.

Love said the neighbor was not protecting his own property but someone else’s, and it could have been the case that the people inside the home were there with the permission of the owner, unbeknownst to the neighbor.

In that scenario, the neighbor could be displaying a firearm on someone who has a legal right to be at the property, exposing himself and others to danger, as well as possible civil or criminal liability.

Police want people to be responsible gun owners, the sergeant said.

“Responsible means that firearm is there for your protection, and that’s the way you should be thinking rather than going over and worrying about someone else’s property,” Love said.

In this case, calling the police, reporting what is seen and staying on the phone until police arrive would have been the advisable move, he said.

“That’s what we get paid for,” Love said.

He added: “It’s our job to come out. We get the training, we get all these different things to respond to different levels of threat. Sometimes that requires us to have our firearms drawn. Sometimes it doesn’t.”

Just because something is legal, he said, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s wise

Former Marine knocks out man threatening neighbors with knife
MYRTLE CREEK, OR. -- A Myrtle Creek man is in jail after a former Marine and another man said they took matters into their own hands.

“But he was just out of his mind. He was ranting and raving and swearing. It was crazy,” said former Marine John Renard.

Renard said he's had to deal with Loveton several times over the last two years.

The latest incident was Tuesday night, when he knocked him out with one punch.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said they got a call from neighbors saying Loveton was in the street with a knife.

One man pulled up in a truck and held Loveton at gunpoint.

Renard said when he walked over to the two men to try to calm Loveton down, Loveton started taunting him.

So Renard did what he had to do.

“And he said ‘You want some of me, old man?’ He put his fists up, so I did the only thing I could do. I knocked him out. When he woke up, the guy with the gun was standing there and held him there until the police got there.

Several other residents on Donald Terrace in Myrtle Creek said Loveton's been a menace to their neighborhood since he moved to the area two years ago.

“He’s threatened me, because he didn’t feel like I was taking good enough care of my animals," said Shirley Murray. "He tried to fight pretty much everybody on the street at one point. I’ve had to testify at a grand jury against him.”

Murray said it’s been one thing after another.

“When he moved in, it was all, the police have been in down here multiple times. At one point, swat was down here because he was shooting a gun in the air. Everyone’s just kind of on.. vigilant right now, trying to make sure we’re all safe.”

Loveton is being held at the Douglas County Jail on at least seven charges, with several more still pending through the District Attorney’s office.

Man held at gunpoint shoots, kills teen robber in Baton Rouge

    Posted: Mon 3:58 PM, Apr 02, 2018
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Baton Rouge police have said a man has shot and killed a teen who was robbing him at gunpoint.

The Advocate cites a news release from Baton Rouge police spokesman Sgt. L'Jean McKneely Jr. that said 18-year-old Ke'irie Grayer was shot dead Saturday night. The release said Grayer had approached a 25-year-old man who was leaving a store and attempted to rob him.

Police ruled the fatal shooting justified after reviewing video footage. Evidence will be presented to the District Attorney's office for review, so the shooter could still be charged.

Further details have not been released.

Eugene homeowner holds trespassers at gunpoint
EUGENE, Ore. - Eugene Police received a call about two trespassers at a residence on the 2100 block of Willona Dr. just after 4 a.m. on Saturday, March 24.

The residence was home to 44-year-old Ammond Lutz, and his three teenage children. Lutz said his children woke him up early Saturday morning saying someone was in the garage. He said he quickly got dressed, grabbed his handgun, and went to check it out.

Lutz said he saw 22-year-old Ryan Best and 21-year-old Arcelia Vasquez-Smith upon opening the door. He said he pointed his gun at them and told them to get on the ground. He told his kids to call the police and said he held the trespassers there for 10 minutes while he waited for police to arrive.

Lutz said when they did arrive, he found himself relieved and even emotional.

"Backed away with my gun and put it on the table, sat down, and kind of lost it emotionally," said Lutz.

He said during that time he was holding the two trespassers in the garage, he realized that if either of them became a threat to either him or his family, he would have to make a difficult decision about firing his gun.

"I've never pointed a gun at a human being before, and that's a big decision, and you need to take it very seriously," Lutz said.

Lutz said it was clear that Best and Vasquez-Smith weren't attempting to steal anything, and that they simply ended up in the wrong residence. He said they did tell him that, but he felt he couldn't risk his family's safety by letting his guard down.

He said neither of them ever attempted to get up and get physical with him, but Best did continue to yell and get upset while he was on the ground.

Even though Lutz said he does understand that it was somewhat of a misunderstanding, he hopes the two trespassers understand how many lives they negatively affected that night.

Officers said the two were arrested on criminal trespassing charges

Crestview, Fla. - A Crestview man held a burglary suspect at gunpoint Thursday night after arriving home from work to find his back door broken in with a cinder block and a strange man showering in his bathroom.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office charged 28-year old Cameron Tobias of Pensacola with burglary, petty theft, and criminal mischief with property damage over $1000. The victim came back to his home on Regan Drive around 8:45 p.m. Thursday and found his back door damaged, deputies wrote in a news release.

He could hear the shower running and asked who was in the house. He says Tobias replied he was taking a shower. The homeowner got a gun and ordered Tobias, who he did not know, to the ground until deputies arrived.

Tobias apologized for the damage and said he had taken LSD a few hours prior to the break-in, deputies wrote.

Bystanders held an alleged murder suspect at gunpoint until APD arrived
    Sidney SullivanMon 5:11 PM, Mar 12, 2018

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Two men held a suspected murderer at gunpoint, while another member of their family called 911 two weeks ago, according to prosecutors and Anchorage police.

Monday, a grand jury indicted 27-year-old Simon Weyiouanna, of Anchorage, on several counts of murder, according to the Anchorage Police Department.

The most serious charges include murder in the first and second degree. If convicted at trial, a first degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 99 years in prison. Additionally, Weyiouanna faces several counts of tampering with physical evidence in the first degree.

Weyiouanna is a suspect in the stabbing murder of 42-year-old Cheri Ingram. On the evening of Feb. 28, witnesses allege they saw him dragging what looked like a dead body into his vehicle, near 30th Avenue and Wisconsin Street.

Police were first notified of "suspicious activity," at approximately 10:25 p.m. Until officers arrived on scene, APD now says, "The 911 caller's husband and son held Weyiouanna at gunpoint."

When officers arrived, they found that the suspect's vehicle was running and backed onto the walkway. Inside the car's open hatchback, APD discovered Ingram's body "wrapped in sheets."

Weyiouanna was arrested on the spot.

Monday, APD says Weyiouanna was arraigned in Anchorage Superior Court. Bail was set at $250,000 cash appearance and $250,000 cash performance.

BURKE COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Two men have been arrested after the robbery of a golf cart went awry.

Investigators say Robert Lynch, 46, and Victor Goodwin, 41, both of Augusta are both facing charges of theft by taking a motor vehicle. Godwin is facing an additional charge of firearm possession by a convicted felon.

The man instructed his wife to call the police and he grabbed a gun and approached Lynch in the yard. The man held Lynch at gunpoint as a truck with an enclosed trailer pulled into the yard. He then held both Lynch and the driver of the truck, Goodwin, at gunpoint until deputies arrived.

Goodwin was found with a 9mm handgun at the time of the arrest. Both suspects were booked into the Burke County jail.

Gun-Toting Homeowner Confronts Suspected Burglar, Protects Family Until Police Arrive
    JENNI FINK
Owen Turman prevented a possible robbery by holding a would-be home intruder at gunpoint until police arrived.

Turman told the Statesville Record & Landmark that he heard his dog, Oakly, barking at around 7:30 a.m. ET, and since she rarely barks, he decided to check it out.

When he saw a man trying to get into his house by way of the sunroom, he grabbed his rifle and headed outside to confront him.

    Owen Turman/Facebook
“My main concern was I have to protect my home and my family,” Turman explained. “The only thing I was thinking (was) keeping my family safe.”

Turman, who is engaged and the father of two daughters — a 6-year-old and an infant — had his rifle pointed at the suspect and was able to get him to lay on the ground.

    Watch the video below:

However, the man repeatedly dug into his pockets and threw needles under Turman's car, which made the homeowner nervous.

Fortunately, a police deputy arrived on the scene and was able to apprehend the suspect after a short struggle. Although he didn't have to fire, he told the Statesville Record & Landmark that he would have if the situation warranted it.

“If it came down to it, my family is most important,” he explained. “I would have taken the shot if it came down to it.”

However, that's not to say it would have been easy.

He shared that during the whole ordeal, he was worried his daughter would come down the stairs and either see him pointing a gun at someone or worse, see him shoot someone.

“I want her to know home is a safe place,” Turman said.

The suspect, Jason Millsaps, was charged with breaking and entering, possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting a public officer.
