A GRIZZLY BEAR WAS ALLEGEDLY SHOT IN SELF-DEFENSE, FWP IS INVESTIGATING
    NICK CHRESTENSON

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are investigating the death of a grizzly bear from a reported self-defense shooting in the Cabinet Mountains south of Troy. FWP Regional Information and Education Program Manager Dillon Tabish explains.

“Two backpackers from Sanders County reported shooting an adult female grizzly bear in self-defense on a forested trail near Dad Peak in the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness,” Tabish said. “The reported surprise encounter occurred along a section of trail with huckleberry bushes. The incident occurred August 2 and the individuals notified authorities August 4 after exiting the backcountry.”

Tabish encourages folks to “Be Bear Aware” and to follow precautionary steps to prevent bear conflicts.

“When you’re out hiking, make sure you are making noise and travel in groups,” Tabish said. “When you are around berry patches and densely forested areas, you want to make sure you are making a little bit of noise so you don’t surprise the bear if it is near the trail with hit’s head down eating berries. If the bears gets surprised, it will act defensively just like any person would if they got surprised without being aware of what is going on.”

According to Tabish, bear spray is also a very effective deterrent and he recommends that all recreationists carry bear spray with them at all times.

    Break-in Ends in Deadly Shooting
By Tabitha Clay SUN Staff Writer2 hrs ago
The city of Espańola had its first fatal shooting of the year Aug. 8 when a homeowner shot an armed intruder.

Darell Padilla, 31, of Espańola was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Espańola Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Jeremy Apodaca said the incident was first reported to 911 dispatchers at approximately 3:45 a.m.

Natasha Decosta reported to police someone was trying to break into her apartment at the Vista del Rio Apartments on Avenida Cańada.

“Someone is trying to break into an apartment, she advised they are pounding on the door, kicking the door trying to get in,” dispatch logs state. “There are two guys who don’t live there and they are saying they are from (FBI High Intensity Drug Task Force) Region Three. She doesn’t think they are cops.”

The men who were trying to get into the apartment were not law enforcement, Apodaca said, although they did identify themselves that way to Decosta and other tenants.

Apodaca said Padilla was armed with a black pellet gun, and that he had taped a laser pointer to the end of the weapon.

Alex Lucero, who lived at the apartment, was armed, and tried to stop Padilla from coming inside, Apodaca said.

“(Padilla) kicked the door open, that’s when the tenant saw the barrel of the gun come through the door,” Apodaca said. “The tenant announced several times that he was armed, and that’s when the offender went into the living room, just stepping through the doorway and being that he was armed, the tenant protected himself with his own weapon.”

Apodaca said it was later that officers discovered Padilla only carried a pellet gun.

After the shooting, Lucero tried to help stop Padilla’s bleeding using a makeshift tourniquet, Apodaca said.

Padilla told officers there had been another man with him, but Apodaca said he was unsure if Padilla had provided the other suspect’s name before being transported to the hospital.

Lucero is not expected to face any charges.

“You do have the right to protect yourself and your family, and being that this person was armed, (Lucero) pretty much took the appropriate actions from my understanding,” Apodaca said. “He announced that he was armed, he announced not to come into his house and (Padilla) still came in with a weapon.”

An obituary for Padilla said he was a Northern New Mexico College graduate with a bachelor’s degree in film and digital media arts. He was also in the process of pursuing his master’s degree in psychology.

Efforts to reach Padilla’s family for comment were unsuccessful.

Police ID suspect in brutal assault of Paris senior citizen
By Klark Byrd and Macon Atkinson editor@theparisnews.com Aug 15, 2019 Updated Aug 15, 2019 0
Daniel M. Roberts, 53, of Paris, is suspected of brutally assaulting a 78-year-old woman in a Clarksville Street home Wednesday morning.

Paris Police Chief Bob Hundley identified Roberts as the suspect late Wednesday afternoon after Roberts and the victim were taken to Paris Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

Hundley said the woman suffered “significant injuries” including stab wounds, a broken leg and a skull fracture. She’s been admitted to the local hospital. Roberts was shot in the leg by the woman as she tried to fight him off, the chief said.

“From the crime scene, it is apparent that the victim fought the suspect,” Hundley said. “The suspect was arrested after jumping from a window at the residence and chased down. He was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and released to arresting officers. He is currently being held in the city jail.”

Paris police responded to the reported home invasion at 8 a.m. in the 2100 block of Clarksville Street. Roberts was allegedly still in the residence when officers arrived, police said.

Due to investigation needs and further medical testing, no mug shot is currently available, the police chief said.

“Felony charges will include burglary for the time being, and other charges will be filed as the investigation continues,” Hundley said.

Man with gun scares off would-be kidnapper near the Galleria: witness

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Quick action by strangers saved a woman who was attacked while she was walking her dog in southwest Houston, according to witnesses.

Lily Paxson was near Richmond and Chimney Rock before 1 p.m. on Thursday when she noticed a man approach the young woman on the sidewalk from behind.

She said at first it seemed like he was trying to pet the dog, but then he grabbed her.

"Her body language seemed that all she wanted to do was get away from him," Paxson recalled. "She was fighting him off of her, then he started hitting her and kicking the dog, grabbing her and lifting her up."

She said things got "violent and aggressive" quickly.

In a state of disbelief, Paxson said she rolled down her windows, started screaming and honking her horn.

Shortly after, three men got out of their cars and intervened.

"Some had guns, and at that point in time, it really became a cross between the Wild West and Gotham City," Paxson recalled.

Paxson called 911 as she drove away for her own safety.

"One of the good guys separated the girl and the dog and they seemed like they were OK and safe," Paxson said.

Houston Police said their officers responded to the area shortly after but were not able to speak with anyone involved.

ABC13 has not been able to confirm if the two knew one another.

No one was hurt Friday after a bullet pierced a window of a police station in the Austin neighborhood when multiple people in a dispute fired shots at each other.

Two males were in custody after their group of four argued with a concealed carry license holder and one of them fired shots, CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

The concealed carry holder took out their own gun and returned fire, he said.

The shooting happened about 7:45 p.m. near the Austin 15th District police station in the 5700 block of West Madison Street, police said. A bullet had pierced a window of the station but did not strike anyone.

Officers saw two males running from the scene and arrested a 16-year-old and 18-year-old, police said. They were being questioned by detectives.

Phoenix resident shoots, kills suspect during attempted burglary, police say
    Justin Lum1 day ago
PHOENIX (FOX 10) - Phoenix police are investigating a shooting that left a Luke Air Force Base airman dead after detectives say he tried to break into an apartment early Sunday morning.

The suspect got onto the property of Alta Camelback. Police say he removed the patio screen door to break the glass - moments before being shot. Now we're learning the man accused of breaking into the home was 21 and was assigned to Luke Air Force Base.

The back door of the corner apartment involved is now boarded up. Early Sunday morning, just after 2:30, Phoenix police responded to a burglary-turned-shooting at Alta Camelback.

Joanelize Morales lives here. She says she and her friends arrived to police asking if they heard gunshots.

"That's the worst location that you could have it," Morales said. "[It] backs into the Chevron [and] it's dark out there. It's almost kind of like a little alley. People are still walking by and taking pictures of the broken glass and the blood on the sidewalk."

Police say a 27-year-old man asleep inside the apartment woke up as the suspect tried to kick in the glass door from the back patio. That's when the tenant grabbed his gun and shot the intruder. According to Phoenix PD, the man who tried to break in was a 21-year-old Airman. He died at a nearby hospital.

Officials with Luke Air Force base confirmed the airman was an assigned military member. Neighbors at Alta Camelback say they've been keeping each other updated through their Facebook group.

"Anybody [who] comes through here needs to be very vigilant because there's a back part of here and it's lit, but again you have people that just tend to be on the bad side," one neighbor said.

"I think it's a good thing that they were able to protect themselves because you're off of the main street," Morales said. "This is 7th [Street] and Camelback - there's a lot of people. You're right behind a gas station."

The identity of the airman won't be released until his family has been notified. Police say the tenant who shot him does not face criminal charges at this time.

Boschkop police spokesperson Yeroboam Mbatsane said a case of murder has since been opened.

Deputies credit armed employee with stopping potential mass shooting at bar
    NEWNAN, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
    - Deputies in Coweta County say an armed off-duty employee may have stopped a mass shooting at a crowded bar in Newnan Saturday morning.

FOX 5 News has the exclusive surveillance video of the shooting outside Fat Boys Bar and Grill on Highway 16. Deputies say that video shows Kevintez Mathewis on his way into the bar with a handgun when Ben McCoy confronts him and is shot multiple times. He drew the gunman's attention and then drew his fire.

Deputies say the security footage also shows Mathewis being ejected from the bar and earlier when security there had confronted him numerous times about his behavior Saturday morning.

Mathewis is seen on video repeatedly trying to get back into the bar and repeatedly security turning him away. Deputies say McCoy became concerned by Mathewis' warnings that he was going to return and shoot up the bar. They say this video shows McCoy placing a small-caliber rifle in from the back of his SUV into the back seat.

It appears that McCoy shouts to him and Mathewis is then seen opening fire.

Another camera angle shows Mathewis pursuing McCoy and firing continuously with his handgun even after McCoy is down. Deputies say he then grabs McCoy's rifle and runs away.

Deputies say Kevintez Mathewis is 27-years-old. He was later tracked down by police K-9 and arrested. Deputies have charged him with aggravated assault.

Ben McCoy was shot four to six times. They are not exactly sure of the exact number. He has undergone surgery at Atlanta Medical Center.

And deputies credit McCoy with stopping what could have been a mass shooting inside the bar.
