Ohio judge shot in ‘ambush’ outside courthouse, attacker killed

An Ohio judge was shot Monday morning outside his courthouse in what authorities called an ambush attack that ended when the judge and a probation officer returned fire, killing the attacker.

Police said a man apparently waiting for Judge Joseph J. Bruzzese Jr., who sits on the Jefferson County Court of Common Pleas, ran up to the judge and began shooting when he approached the courthouse. Bruzzese drew a gun and fired at least five rounds at the shooter, possibly hitting the attacker, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred J. Abdalla told reporters during emotional remarks Monday morning.

“This individual laid in wait for our judge,” Abdalla said, tearing up during his remarks. “It just hurts. First thing on Monday morning, you have a judge shot in front of his courthouse … This was an ambush and an attempted murder on our judge.”

Authorities said Bruzzese was taken into surgery. His condition was not immediately known after the shooting, though the local news station WTOV9 reported that he was stable.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified by authorities, was struck three times and killed. Since a probation officer at the courthouse also shot at the suspect, Abdalla said it was not clear whether one of Bruzzese’s bullets hit the attacker, who fired five rounds.

During additional remarks to reporters Monday afternoon, Abdalla described Bruzzese as an avid hunter and sportsman. The sheriff said that years earlier, he had urged Bruzzese to carry a weapon with him for protection due to all of the “nutcases” around the country.

“With all the nuts running around, I encouraged him to get a weapon,” Abdalla said. “And he did.”

According to Abdalla, the attacker approached the courthouse early Monday morning in a car with another person before leaving and returning. When the shooter saw Bruzzese, Abdalla said, he “jumped out” of the car and ran over to begin shooting.

The second person in the car is not considered a suspect or an accomplice, Abdalla said, and told authorities that the shooter had only said he had to be in court Monday morning. This second person, who was also not identified, did not get out of the car and was wounded by a possible bullet ricochet and taken to the hospital, the sheriff said.


Abdalla said authorities have video of the shooting that they are working to have enhanced to show people what happened.

The shooting occurred in Steubenville, Ohio, a place best known for a high-profile rape case involving high school football players. It was unclear whether the shooting related to Bruzzese’s work, which involves hearing criminal felonies as well as some civil cases, according to the court’s website.

The Steubenville Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday regarding the shooter’s identity.

“This man shoots a judge, could’ve killed him,” Abdalla said of the attacker. He added: “Thank God he’s not that good a shot.”

During his additional remarks Monday afternoon, Abdalla said that authorities were investigating whether the attacker had any connections to the judge, saying only that the shooter had “been involved in different things in Steubenville.”

Officials were expected to provide additional information at a briefing later Monday afternoon.

Man Shot Attempting Break-In Sentenced to 99 Years in Prison

A 37-year-old man shot while attempting to burglarize a North Texas home has been sentenced to 99 years behind bars for the crime.
Trenton Eugene Sinyard, of Ovilla, was sentenced Friday to 99 years in prison for burglary of a habitation.
Prosecutors said Sinyard broke into a home at about 1 p.m. June 2, 2015 and, upon entering the residence, was shot several times by a woman who was home alone.
The woman told police someone rang her doorbell, but that she didn't answer since she was home alone. She said the person at the door then went into her backyard and to a patio door where he began pounding on the door and jiggling the handle.

The woman then called the Ellis County Sheriff's Department while arming herself with a pistol.
Prosecutors said less than two minutes after she called for help, Sinyard managed to make his way inside by forcing the door open with his shoulder. When he stepped into the home the resident began firing.

"When Sinyard stepped into the home, the victim, while on the phone with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, shot at him approximately seven times with one bullet grazing the back of Sinyard’s head and another becoming lodged in his upper back," the Ellis County District Attorney's Office said in a statement Monday.

Sinyard ran from the home but was tracked by a sheriff's department canine officer to the crawl space of a house next door. That house, officials said, was where Sinyard had been staying with relatives while on parole for a prior burglary conviction.
"Sinyard has prior convictions for burglary of a habitation in Ellis County and Van Zandt County. He was convicted of simple burglary in Louisiana on March 21, 2014," the district attorney's office said. "Sinyard's criminal history also includes convictions for theft, possession of marijuana, and multiple convictions for burglary of vehicles."

Extremely drunk, he picked the wrong house to enter


A man with a blood alcohol level three times over the legal limit was shot by a resident after he broke into her home Saturday night, the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The resident of Carter Street in Tuolumne City called 911 a few minutes before 9 p.m. to report a man was trying to break into her home. She yelled at the man to go away, while she secured her doors and hid her three children upstairs, the Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post Sunday night.

The woman armed herself with a handgun. While she was on the line with a dispatcher, the man gained entry through a door, about six minutes after the resident first realized he was trying to get in, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman St. Andrea Benson said. The resident fired one shot at the intruder, causing an injury later determined not to be life-threatening.

He fled and was located by deputies in a neighboring home where he’d been attending a party just before going to the woman’s house. He was taken to Adventist Health Sonora for treatment. His blood alcohol level was above 0.250 percent, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Because of his extreme intoxication, deputies have not ruled out that the man may have thought he was re-entering the house where the party was held, Benson said.

“Detectives are still investigating and speaking with those involved,” she said. People in the house to which he’d fled had not called authorities, Benson said. When deputies arrived, those in the home were “tending to him, providing first aid.”

The man has not been placed under arrest, Benson said Monday morning, and the Sheriff’s Office has not released his name.

Plea submitted in residential entry, drug case

A man who attempted to break into a Henry County home is due in court Thursday for sentencing.
Casey McDonald, 38, New Castle, was arrested in May in the 7000 block of S. County Road 200 W. and charged with residential entry, possession of meth and possession of a syringe, according to documents filed in Henry Circuit Court 2. A plea was submitted on McDonald’s behalf last month.

At the time the incident took place, the homeowner allegedly held McDonald at gunpoint until Indiana State Police arrived. When ISP Sgt. Dave Whitinger got to the home, he found McDonald seated in a chair on the front porch. The homeowner was nearby, holding a long gun, a press release indicated.

McDonald allegedly woke the family up when he started banging against the back door of the home with his shoulder, attempting to break in. The homeowner told his wife to call 9-1-1 while he went outside with a shotgun and held McDonald at gunpoint until help arrived. McDonald also allegedly broke into the family’s garage before trying to enter the home.
McDonald’s car, which was parked in the middle of the road, was towed from the scene and he was taken to Henry County Jail.

Sentencing is scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m. Thursday. As of Friday morning, McDonald remained incarcerated at Henry County Jail on a $15,000 surety, $1,050 cash bond.

Sissonville shooting leaves man dead after suspected knife attack

In what appeared to be act of self defense, a man shot and killed another man in Sissonville on Tuesday afternoon.

Tracy Stalnaker, 53, armed himself with a knife and chased the other man, who in turn shot and killed Stalnaker, said Lt. Brian Humphreys, a spokesman for the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.

Police didn’t initially name the shooter, who as of yet has not been charged in the incident.

The shooting unfolded outside Smitty’s Auto Parts, located on Wolf Pen Drive.

Stalnaker died at the scene, Humphreys said.

“No one is in custody,” he said. “There is no ongoing danger.”

Stalnaker’s family members gathered at a home down the street. At least one lives in the neighborhood, and another said Stalnaker suffered from mental illness.

He allegedly got into an altercation at a nearby bar about 15 minutes before his death.

Holding a tall Budweiser can, he walked into Raw Bar II, said Debbie Carpenter, the bar manager.

Carpenter said she told the Stalnaker to get rid of his beer. When he returned, the manager noticed a long knife in his waistband.

She later realized Stalnaker had several knives around his waist. He at one point threatened the bar owner, a knife in each hand, Carpenter said.

“He was never right, but today he was really messed up in the head,” she said.

Police: Robber tries to take woman's purse, flees when 57-year-old shows gun at west Little Rock shopping center

A gun-toting 57-year-old woman fought off a would-be robber who tried to take her purse outside a west Little Rock grocery store, according to police.

Officers with the Little Rock Police Department were called around 5:10 p.m. Friday to a home in the 1200 block of Briar Creek Road.

There, they spoke with the victim, who said that she was approached by a black male while attempting to unlock her vehicle around 4:15 p.m. outside The Fresh Market in the Pleasant Ridge Town Center off Cantrell Road.

The would-be robber reportedly grabbed the woman’s purse while it rested on her shoulder, at which point, the victim brandished a weapon she had stored inside.

According to the report, the assailant then fled west through the parking lot of the grocery store and behind Belk.

No items were listed as stolen from the woman.

Salina Man Held at Gunpoint After Trying to Break in to Home

A home intruder is in custody after he met the owner of the home he was trying to break in to the hard way in the early hours this morning.
Sheriff Roger Soldan tells KSAL News that 51-year-old, Mark Kind awoke to his dog barking in his home at 60 West Prairie Ridge Rd. at 4:16 A.M. this morning with someone trying to break in to the home.


Once Kind got up, he went to go investigate what was going on and brought his gun.
When Kind went outside, he found a subject in his truck. Kind then held the subject at gunpoint on the ground until authorities arrived.
Law Enforcement arrested 38-year-old Jason Allen Wooderson of Salina who also had marijuana, methamphetamine and other paraphernalia on him.

Wooderson was charged with possession of opiates, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and criminal trespass.
There was no damage to the home and nothing was taken from Kind’s truck.

She's very lucky. This is precisely why you DO NOT purse carry. The straps on a standard purse not designed for CC usually break fairly easy.

Deputies: 89-year-old homeowner shoots burglar in Gilchrist County

TRENTON, Fla. (WGFL) — Gilchrist County Sheriff's deputies say an 89-year-old homeowner shot and critically wounded a burglar who broke into his house early Tuesday.
Deputies say the homeowner responded to a knock on his door just after midnight in the southeast section of the county near the Rolling Oaks subdivision.
The suspect forced his way into the home and demanded money, deputies say. They say both the suspect and the victim armed themselves, and that the homeowner fired and shot the suspect.


Deputies say the victim left the home and flagged down a sergeant patrolling the area. Deputies say they entered the house and found the suspect, who has not been named, still inside the house with severe injuries.
Deputies say he remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
The case is still under investigation.

UPDATE(11:30 a.m. August 21,2017) Mobile County Sheriff’s Office released the name of the Theodore homicide victim.

Jeffrey Shawn Sanford was found shot and lying in the front yard of homeowner, Ronald L. Vaughan.

According to an emailed press release, around 7:15 p.m. on Sunday August 20, MCSO responded to a call in reference to a homicide at 5750 Alice Lane in Theodore.

Kelly Conner, Vaughan’s daughter, was swimming with family members at the Cold Hole on Bellingrath Road. Conner told authorities she was assulted by a woman she was in an argument with.

Here is the exact description from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office:

Witnesses on the scene stated that Vaughan came out of his home armed with a shotgun when several people followed his daughter, Kelly Conner, home and on to their property threatening her. Conner stated that she and her five children, a nephew and several of his friends, were at the Cold Hole located on Bellingrath Road earlier in the day swimming. Conner stated that she and a female at the Cold Hole, got into an argument and the female assaulted her by striking her in the face. Conner struck the female back and a short altercation took place involving several others at the scene. Conner fled the scene and drove to her residence on Alice Lane. As Conner entered her residence, she observed the subjects from the Cold Hole pull up in front of her residence in a white Chevy Tahoe. Conner called out to her father, Ronald Vaughan, for assistance. Vaughan armed himself with a shotgun and walked to the front to confront the two male subjects that had exited the Tahoe and entered the front yard. Vaughan fired a warning shot and Conner observed the two subjects, identified as JEFFREY SHAWN SANFORD and ALEX BODIFORD (DOB 1/22/95) assaulting her father. Conner then heard another shot and saw SANFORD fall to the ground.
