BREAKING: Judge rules in favor of ‘stand your ground’ motion in Boynton fatal shooting

Samuel "Bo" Barber, the man accused of fatally shooting Kunta Kinte Riddick on Nov. 29 in Boynton Beach, sits in court before the start of a Stand Your Ground hearing in his first-degree murder case Thursday, June 21, 2018. The prosecution says the shooting was premeditated because of "bad-blood" with the Riddick family. Barber's attorney, Public Defender Carey Haughwout, says Barber was acting in self-defense because Riddick came after him with a stick that had a nail in it. (Lannis Waters / The Palm Beach Post)

    WEST PALM BEACH —
Palm Beach County Judge Laura Johnson late Friday ruled in favor of Samuel “Bo” Barber’s “stand your ground” motion that said he shot and killed Kunta Kinte Riddick in self-defense in November.

Barber was charged with first-degree murder in the 2017 fatal shooting, but the charges were dismissed in court Friday evening.

Johnson said at the end of the day, what happened to Riddick was a tragedy, but that the state did not show “clear and convincing evidence” that Barber was not acting in self-defense when he shot Riddick on Nov. 29 in Boynton Beach.

In 2017, the burden shifted from the defense needing to prove the case for “stand your ground” immunity to the prosecution.

“(The case) has to be looked at through the eyes of what Mr. Barber knew at the time and what Mr. Reddick knew at the time, too,” Johnson said.

New Zealand man shot, arrested after attempting to break-in Goochland home
    Dean Mirshahi
GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A New Zealand citizen was shot in the neck in Goochland County today after allegedly attempting to break into a home.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., deputies responded to a call of a shooting on Steeplechase Parkway in central Goochland. At around the same time, a second caller to 911 informed authorities that his wife had called him about a man attempting to break into their home.

Once deputies arrived on the scene, they found a white man in the front yard of a residence suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck.

The subject, identified as Troy George Skinner, was treated at the scene and taken to VCU Medical Center.

Further investigation revealed that Skinner, a 25-year old citizen of New Zealand, had forced entry into a residence, occupied by a woman and her two teenage daughters.

Skinner apparently attempted to use a brick to break in the home's rear basement door. At this time, the homeowner warned Skinner she was calling the police and was armed with a handgun.

Skinner, unsuccessful going through the basement, went to the deck of the home and broke the glass of the door with a landscape stone.

Skinner broke through the glass on the door and reached through to unlatch it. The woman with the handgun, unidentified by police, warned Skinner repeatedly before shooting him twice.

Skinner fled the home and fell onto the front yard of a neighbor's yard.

Skinner, who arrived in the U.S. at Los Angeles International Airport just two days ago, is in custody as charges are pending.

GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. – Two days after arriving in the United States, a New Zealand man was shot after attempting to break into a Goochland home, according to investigators.

Deputies with the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office says the incident happened Friday at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Steeplechase Parkway in the central part of the county.

After receiving an initial call for a shooting at the location, deputies also received a call from a man who said his wife called him about an intruder trying to break into their home.

An investigation determined that a suspect, identified as 25-year-old Troy George Skinner, of New Zealand, attempted to break into a home occupied by a mother and two teenage daughters.

Deputies say Skinner attempted to break into the basement of the home with a brick, when the mother told him that see was calling police and that she was armed with a handgun.

After the break-in attempt was unsuccessful, deputies say Skinner went on the deck and broke the glass door with a concrete stone.

“After repeated warning by the mother, Skinner smashed the glass on the door and reached through to unlatch it. As he reached through the door, the mother shot twice at Skinner with a .22 caliber handgun,” according to a sheriff’s office spokesperson.

Skinner suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and stumbled onto the front yard next-door while trying to flee the scene.

When deputies arrived, aid was given to Skinner, who was transported to VCU Medical Center via Med-flight. There is no word on his condition at this time.

Investigators say Skinner came into the United States through the Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday, June 20.

He is in the custody of the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office and charges are pending.

Deputies say the investigation into the break-in is ongoing.

Naked man arrested, claimed he 'may be Jesus'
By Heather Oney The Salyersville Independent27 min ago
JOHNSON FORK – An Indiana man was arrested, naked and claiming to possibly be Jesus, near a home on Johnson Fork on Monday.

On June 18, Magoffin County Sheriff Department Deputies Jonathan Holbrook and Cory Cook responded to the Johnson Fork area after receiving several complaints of a naked male behind a residence.

After arriving on the scene, the officers found the naked male lying in the grass near the home. The man would not tell law enforcement his name but said he “may be Jesus.”

He was taken into custody, with law enforcement noting in the police report he appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

The homeowner advised police that the man was behind his house and allegedly took a gas jug and poured it everywhere around the residence. He reportedly told the man to leave but he wouldn’t. The homeowner said the male went through his car and took several items and then went walking up the road with his front sun shield.

The homeowner told Mortimer Media Group he looked out his back door and the man was lying down in his yard, then he jumped up and ran a little, moving erratically. The homeowner reportedly fired a warning shot in the air, which the man responded to by grabbing an oil can and throwing it against the house. He then grabbed a gas can and started dousing the house in gasoline. He allegedly grabbed a service wire that provided electricity to an outbuilding on the property and proceeded to attempt to start a fire, while at the same time screaming that he was going to burn down the house.

At this point, the homeowner reportedly shot a few more times over his head, and the man got in a car in front of the house, then walked on down the road. There is a gate on the property and he was found by law enforcement approximately 75 feet from the gate, laying in the grass.

While Deputy Holbrook transported the male to the sheriff office, he reportedly tore out a cord in the rear radar of the cruiser.

He was later identified as Austin Michael Johnson, 31, from Indiana.

According to law enforcement, his family woke up on Saturday morning and he was gone. They were looking for him in Ohio when they received a tip that he was in Salyersville, and they picked him up at a local gas station early Sunday morning. Once back on the road, their car made a strange noise, so they stopped to check it out, when Johnson took off running, again, and they couldn’t find him.

Johnson has no known criminal history or affiliation with Magoffin County.

Law enforcement did not request toxicology at the time of the arrest.

Johnson is currently being held at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, facing the following charges: third-degree burglary; first-degree indecent exposure, first offense; third-degree criminal trespassing; second-degree criminal mischief; giving officer false identifying information; and public intoxication – controlled substance (excludes alcohol).

At press time no court date has been scheduled in the case.

Businessman shoots ex-tenant to avoid being set on fire

A businessman is currently in police custody after he allegedly discharged several shots at a former tenant, who allegedly doused him with a flammable liquid and attempted to set him alight yesterday morning during a confrontation along Regent Street, Georgetown.

Police said the shooting occurred between 9 am and 9.30 am yesterday along Regent Street, between Albert and Light streets, during which Chezley Tyndall, 50, a taxi driver of Lot 809 Block V, Herstelling, East Bank Demerara was shot to his left hand and left foot.

He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he is presently admitted in a stable condition.

The suspect, who has been identified as 42-year-old businessman John Ramanand, of 109 Thomas Street, Kitty, was apprehended after the attack.

Ramanand is a licensed firearm holder. His weapon has since been seized by police.

A police source told Stabroek News that Tyndall and Ramanand are known to each other as Tyndall previously rented an apartment owned by Ramanand.

This newspaper was also told that Ramanand was in a store along Regent Street when he was confronted by Tyndall, who was at the time allegedly carrying a bottle containing a flammable substance, suspected to be gasoline.

Tyndall then threw the suspected substance on Ramanand and told him “I gon kill you today!” He then allegedly pulled out a lighter in a bid to set Ramanand on fire.

In fear for his life, Ramanand reportedly drew his firearm and discharged several rounds at Tyndall, hitting him to his left hand and left foot.

Geneva County (WTVY)-- A man is dead after a Geneva County woman shot him during what law enforcement believes is likely a home invasion attempt.

Sheriff Tony Helms told WTVY the incident occurred Saturday evening in a remote area south of Wicksburg in Geneva County.

Helms said initial indications are the homeowner repeatedly told the man to leave. When he refused, and kept banging on her door, she shot him.

An investigation is ongoing but, as of now, no charges are expected. However, the case could be presented to a grand jury that would decide if the shooting is self-defense.

Under Alabama Stand Your Ground Law, people have a right to kill if they believe their life is in jeopardy.
