Police: Fatal shooting of woman was self-defense

    WSFA Staff
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Montgomery police say a shooting Sunday, which resulted in a woman’s death, was self-defense.

According to Sgt. Jarrett Williams, officers were called to the 2400 block of Crossway Drive on a report that someone had been shot. Once there, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound.

Williams says the woman was taken to Baptist Medical Center South where she was later pronounced dead.

An initial investigation, Williams says, has determined the woman was shot in self-defense. The case is expected to be presented to a grand jury as a possible justifiable homicide.

Four people were detained for questioning at the scene, but no arrests have been made.

The identify of the woman has not been released.

Gun Rights Made All the Difference for These Would-Be Victims
    Amy Swearer / @AmySwearer / Lucas Drill / June 17, 2019 /

Roughly 1 million defensive gun uses occur every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (Photo: RonBailey/Getty Images)
Contrary to the rhetoric of many gun control advocates, the Second Amendment’s protection of the individual right to keep and bear arms is not a malevolent, outdated barricade to peace that must be demolished or diminished in the name of public safety. Rather, it is a fundamental part of the nation’s scheme of ordered liberty.

Firearms are used far more often in self-defense than in crime.

According to a 2013 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which compiled and analyzed various studies involving the defensive use of firearms, Americans use firearms in self-defense between 500,000 and 3 million times annually.

The agency’s own data indicates that approximately 1 million defensive gun uses likely occur every year, far outpacing the number of times guns are used to illegally kill or injure others.

Nevertheless, gun control proponents regularly promote policies such as limiting magazine capacity, banning commonly owned firearms, and restricting the number of firearms a law-abiding citizen may purchase at one time.

These policies not only fail to meaningfully address the underlying causes and mechanisms of gun-related violence, they also would hinder the ability of regular citizens to legally and effectively defend themselves and others. Every month this year, we’ve reported on Americans who were forced to rely on their Second Amendment rights to defend themselves or their fellow citizens.

Here are several examples from the month of May that shed light on the importance of allowing law-abiding citizens to exercise the right to keep and bear arms:

May 1, Detroit. A 59-year-old woman defended herself and her home against three men who broke the security bars on her window. The woman called the police. Then, fearing for her life in the interim, she fired at the intruders. One intruder was wounded and all three fled.

May 5, Memphis. A woman called the police twice after spotting a man on her home security cameras who was walking suspiciously along the side of her house. Before officers could arrive, the man kicked down the woman’s door. He was met by a hail of gunfire from the woman and fled the scene wounded, eventually admitting himself to a hospital, where he was arrested.

May 7, Lumberton, North Carolina. Two would-be armed robbers confronted a 39-year-old man in an open garage in his own backyard. The man pulled his own firearm and exchanged gunfire with the two assailants and wounded one in the leg. Both were arrested, and one has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

May 9, Huntsville, Alabama. Two armed robbers confronted a 23-year-old concealed carry permit holder and his mother outside a grocery store. After one of the robbers pointed his gun at the mother, the permit holder drew and fired in her defense. The would-be robbers escaped the confrontation in a stolen vehicle and later were apprehended by police.

May 12, Lancaster, California. A father shot and killed a man who broke into his home through a window and entered an upstairs bedroom. The same man tried earlier to break into a different house, and the father feared for the safety of himself and his children.

May 14, Tallahassee, Florida. A homeowner found himself outnumbered—but not outgunned—by four armed assailants who had stolen his keys and broken into his home. Armed with a rifle, the homeowner fired approximately 25 rounds to defend his life and his property. The suspects returned fire, but ultimately fled the residence and were arrested by law enforcement.

May 20, Madison County, Indiana. A 25-year-old man involved in a series of altercations with his family returned one night to threaten family members with a shotgun for several hours. The man’s father retrieved his own gun and shot and wounded his unhinged son. .

May 24, St. Paul, Minnesota. A concealed carry permit holder fired in self-defense toward a group of males who chased him after he parked his car. One assailant was struck, causing the group to retreat. After the incident, the permit holder immediately called police and waited for them to arrive.

May 25, Hudson, Florida. A mother with young children held a would-be intruder at gunpoint for an incredible 26 minutes while she waited for law enforcement to arrive. Although she’d called 911 three times, the first support to arrive was not a police officer, but an armed neighbor.

May 27, Chicago. A concealed carry permit holder shot and killed an armed man who approached him, gun drawn, in an alley. The permit holder was unharmed.

May 30, Houston. A woman defended herself from three armed men who forced their way into her home while unlawfully impersonating police officers. When the woman realized the intruders were not actually police officers and that one intruder had his firearm drawn, she retrieved her own gun. The fake cops fled after a brief shootout and later may have been involved in another shooting.

May 31, Las Vegas. Two brothers protected themselves and their home from an intruder who broke in and started a physical altercation. During the struggle, one of the brothers shot the intruder several times, killing him. A neighbor told the media, “It’s scary. You never know what could happen. … You’ve got to protect yourself at all times.”
These instances of defensive gun use show why the right to keep and bear arms is so critical to the security of a free state. The Second Amendment is not a historical curiosity to be studied from afar, but a real and ongoing safeguard against crime and tyranny in lives of Americans.

Shootout At Logan County Home After Invasion

Deputies are searching for a suspect that broke into a Logan County home around 5 a.m. Monday morning.

They said the would-be-burglar broke into a home that had two people inside of it.

Within moments, gunfire erupted from the property that sits on Tumbleweed Trail.

Deputies said one of the victims and the suspect were shooting rounds at each other.

News 9 obtained the 911 call from the incident.

A male victim revealed he was shot in the leg by the suspect and was able to bandage the wound as he waited for an ambulance.

Here are some excerpts from the 911 call:

Caller: I have been shot in the leg. Someone invaded the house.

Dispatch: Is the person who shot you in the leg…

    Dispatch: No. They are gone.

Dispatch: Okay, do you know who it was?

Caller: I have no idea. It was dark.

Dispatch: Okay, how long ago did this occur?

Caller: Um, five, ten minutes ago. I don’t know man.

It is unclear what the suspect was looking for.

Deputies said nothing had been reported stolen, and the suspect was able

    to get away.

Authorities have been searching for any clues.

The two victims in the home at the time were possibly guests, according to the undersheriff. Deputies are searching for the actual homeowner.

“When we executed a search warrant where it appeared a vehicle sped out of the driveway at high speed. Just from acceleration marks that were left in the gravel,” said Undersheriff Troy ****s of the Logan County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies have confirmed the male victim has been released from the hospital.

Police seek man suspected in ‘creepy’ home invasions in East Point

Police in East Point have released a photo of a man who they believe is tied to a string of home invasions in south Fulton County.
Jacquez Antonio Walker, 22, has been identified as a suspect in the home invasions, which neighbors in East Point call “creepy.” There have been at least five cases, and authorities have tied Walker to two of them, Channel 2 Action News reported. Police said in all but one of the break-ins, nothing was stolen; the man entered the homes and just stood there

Tiffany Wiseman’s home in the Heritage Park neighborhood was hit twice in one week, she told Channel 2. “When I screamed he didn’t move, and he just needs to be caught,” she said. Wiseman said the incident was unnerving. Afterward, she barricaded herself inside her home and armed herself, she told the news station. Two days later, the man was back again, she said.“He went for the door and tried to kick at it,” Wiseman told Channel 2 soon after the incident.

However, the would-be intruder never made it inside Wiseman’s home the second time, according to Channel 2. The woman shot at the invader as he tried to break her door down, she said. “He got the door knob off again,” she said. “Once I popped (fired the gun) he was gone and I called police.”Wiseman missed the man, and he ran away, Channel 2 reported. Walker is also wanted on theft charges, the news station reported.

Woman shot while shielding children from attack by ex-boyfriend, Akron police say

    By Cliff Pinckard, cleveland.comPosted Jun 16, 2019
AKRON, Ohio — Police say a woman was shot in the back Sunday as she shielded her children from gunshots fired by her ex-boyfriend during a confrontation on the streets that ended with the gunman taking his own life.

The 23-year-old woman was listed in serious condition Sunday evening at Akron City Hospital. Her three young children were not injured.

According to police, the woman was walking with her children at about 5 p.m. with a female friend and her child near the intersection of East Exchange Street and South Arlington Avenue in the Arlington neighborhood.

Witnesses tell police the victim’s boyfriend, who is the father of her youngest child, pulled up in a pickup truck into the closed intersection of East Exchange Street and River Street.

The man got out of the truck and walked toward the woman, first exchanging words and then getting into a physical confrontation.

Police say the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired several shots. The woman, attempting to shield her three children, was wounded in the back.

The other woman ran with her child to a nearby gas station, police say.

Meanwhile, an armed guard with Typhon Security, who was working at a nearby construction site, heard the incident and approached the suspect. The two men exchanged gunfire, and police say the suspect tried to again shoot the female victim but his gun jammed.

According to police, two males and a female jumped out from two separate vehicles and tried to help the victim and her children. The two males wrestled with the suspect, who dropped his handgun and pulled out a knife, police say.

The two males and female helped the victim and her children into their cars. They drove them to the intersection of South Arlington Street and Clark Street, where they flagged down a police officer.

The male suspect retrieved his handgun and ran eastbound on River Street, again exchanging gunfire with the security guard, police say. The suspect was then confronted by a police officer.

The suspect then put the gun to his head and shot himself, police say. He was taken to Akron City Hospital but he died of his wounds.

The security guard was not injured.

The suspect’s name will not be released pending positive identification and family notifications, police say. The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.

Accused Mt. Morris Township gas station shooter bound over to circuit court
    By Roberto Acosta | racosta1@mlive.comToday 2:53 PM
FLINT, MI – The case against a Flint man accused of shooting a grandmother during an April gunfight at a Mt. Morris Township gas station may ultimately be decided by a jury.

Ade Shaheem Milton, 30, was bound over Monday, June 17 by 67th District Judge William H. Crawford to Genesee Circuit Court on multiple charges including three counts of assault with intent to murder, five counts of felony firearms, and two counts of assault to do great bodily harm less than murder.

He was originally charged on the assault with intent to murder and felony firearms counts.

Police with the Mt. Morris Township Police Department were called around 2:30 p.m. April 18 to the Marathon gas station in the 3400 block of West Pierson Road for a report of a shooting.

Mt. Morris Township Police Chief Terence Green previously said the 57-year-old grandmother was pumping gas next to a Buick Enclave when she got caught in an exchange of gunfire between a shooter in a white Range Rover and a white Chevy Impala.

Her vehicle was occupied by two teenagers who were narrowly missed by gunfire, said Green.

Another woman, 26, who was shot in the eye during the shooting was treated for injuries and has been released from the hospital. The woman was in a suspect’s vehicle when she was shot.

“It looks like this appears to be an ongoing feud between the two groups,” Green said. “Just by chance they met up at this gas station, saw one another, and decided to shoot it out.”

A second person that had been taken into police custody is not being charged.

“Based upon the information submitted by Mt. Morris Township police, we determined he was shooting in self-defense and we did not charge him,” Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton previously said.

Milton is being held without bond at the Genesee County Jail, according to court records. He faces up to life in prison on the assault with intent to murder charge.
