Suspect shot while trying to rob Metro PCS on the Southside
People who work at the nearby barbershop say whether the shooter was an employee or customer of the store.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — A man was shot inside a MetroPCS on Sunbeam Road while trying to rob the store around 5:30 p.m., the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says.

JSO says the suspect fled after being shot, but was shortly taken to the hospital.

Police did not say whether the shooter was an employee or customer of the store. Brian Alvarenga, who works as a barber at Kut Kingz nearby, said an employee shot the gun in self defense.

"A gentleman who works at Metro PCS started banging on the glass to try to get our attention, and he said he just shot somebody who tried to rob him over there."

At the scene on Wednesday, detectives swarmed a car. Alvarenga said the suspected attempted robber tried to run to his car after getting shot. There were blood stains on the ground in the parking lot next to a brown-colored Ford SUV.

Alvarenga said this same employee has experienced this before. "This is the second time, same situation, same kid."

The suspect's identity has not been released.

The man who shot at the suspect was brought in for questioning. At this time, there are no charges against him.

Police could not tell us the condition of the suspect at this time.

    Police are still investigating.

    Jurors acquit shooter
April 18, 2019 at 5:00 am | By RALPH BARTHOLDT Staff Writer

COEUR d’ALENE — A 27-year-old Athol man who claimed he acted in self-defense when he shot another man multiple times at a Coeur d’Alene apartment complex was aquitted Wednesday by a jury.

Jurors in the two-day trial in Coeur d’Alene’s First District Court deliberated 90 minutes before returning a not guilty verdict for Keven C. Custer, who was on trial for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

“The jury found Keven Custer not guilty because they determined that Keven had a reasonable fear of death or great bodily harm,” said Custer’s attorney, Joseph Sullivan, on Wednesday.

Custer was accused of shooting 46-year-old Chris Gunderson Oct. 4 with a 9 mm he carried in a hip holster while lying on the ground after being struck by Gunderson. The blow knocked out one of Custer’s teeth, and cracked two others.

Gunderson survived the shooting despite being struck by bullets in the abdomen and chest, as well as his groin area, and an arm. He testified that he had used methamphetamine and marijuana, and drank beer and moonshine before the altercation at a St. Vincent de Paul housing facility in the 3800 block of east Second Avenue in Post Falls.

Sullivan said the incidents leading up to the shooting likely swayed jurors, who determined the force Custer used to defend himself was reasonable under the circumstances.

According to reports, Custer went around 8 p.m. to the apartment where his girlfriend lived, to retrieve some clothes that his girlfriend had washed for him. Gunderson was at the apartment with some other people and attempted to frisk Custer. Gunderson reportedly said he wanted to take away Custer’s firearm so he could beat him, and refused to allow Custer to leave the apartment.

After knocking Custer to the ground, Gunderson continued the attack until Custer shot him. Custer fled the apartment before calling police.

He told an officer, “I can’t believe I shot him.”

When officers arrived at the apartment complex, the Springfield handgun was lying on the ground outside the building along with a magazine and a bullet. Custer was sitting on the curb waiting for authorities.

Sullivan said despite testimony of Gunderson’s wounds, his client was not the perpetrator.

“Keven was the real victim here and the jury made the right decision,” he said.

A Norfolk man said he killed his friend in self-defense, and jurors agreed
    By Jonathan Edwards
Staff writer Apr 18, 2019 Updated 15 min ago
    NORFOLK

Jurors acquitted a 63-year-old HVAC worker of murder this week, finding he shot an acquaintance dead in self defense.

Keith Sheehan Moore stood trial this week for second-degree murder and using a gun illegally.

Prosecutor Greg Turpin accused him of getting a gun, picking a fight with 46-year-old Wes Harmon, and then shooting him early in the morning on Nov. 13, 2017 at Moore’s house in the 6100 block of Hampton Blvd.

Jurors deliberated for about three hours before finding Moore not guilty on Wednesday evening, Norfolk commonwealth’s attorney spokeswoman Amanda Howie said.

On Wednesday, Moore took the stand and testified the shooting was the culmination of a long history of run-ins with Harmon. Moore said he became friends with Harmon’s girlfriend, Heide Fisher, five or six years ago, and Harmon a couple years after that.

Harmon and Fisher had a rocky relationship, and she would seek refuge at Moore’s, he told jurors. Harmon would often come get her, and the two would argue.

That’s what happened before the shooting, Moore said. Harmon’s girlfriend came over and looked like she’d been beat up, and Harmon showed up sometime later. Moore said he just wanted to keep the peace, so he drove Harmon to get beer and had a few with Fisher and Harmon.

The two were arguing when Moore went to bed around 10:15 that night, he testified. At about 3 a.m., he got up to use the bathroom, but it was locked. He used a key to open the door — Fisher was lying on the ground and screamed.

Fisher said Harmon had taken Moore’s wallet and keys, and had choked her.

Moore armed himself with his .38-caliber revolver and went to confront Harmon. He tried to get in the guest room, but it was also locked. So, Moore said, he backed off.

That’s when Harmon burst out of the room and charged Moore and Fisher, pushing them back into the kitchen, Moore said.

“He was out of his head,” he added. “He was just coming at us like a wild man.

“I just raised my gun and shot.”

Moore said he and Fisher searched for a phone for a few minutes and then called 911.

The bullet that killed Harmon hit him in the chest and blasted through his rib cage, heart, and lung, before lodging in his back, medical examiner Wendy Gunther wrote in her autopsy report.

Harmon had a blood alcohol level of between 0.13 and 0.17. He also had cocaine in his system.

Defense lawyer Bill Taliaferro argued both substances make people more aggressive.

The first officer to get to Moore’s house said he heard screaming from inside the house. When he knocked on the front door, Moore answered with a gun in his hand and told the officer he had to do it.

Police found a .32 revolver, one .32-caliber casing and five .32-caliber cartridges, Norfolk homicide Detective William Cogswell wrote in a search warrant.

Moore was given a bond about two weeks after his arrest and has been out of jail since then.

Man dead after St. Roch homeowner shoots him during suspected generator theft: NOPD
    By Emily Lane, NOLA.com | The Times-PicayuneToday 2:01 PM
New Orleans Police said one of two males who were trying to steal a generator from a St. Roch home was fatally shot by the homeowner early Friday, April 19, 2019.

A St. Roch homeowner fatally shot one of two men suspected by New Orleans police of trying to steal the homeowner’s generator early Friday (April 19).

The homeowner, a 33-year-old man, heard an alarm indicating his shed had been opened, then saw two males in his yard, NOPD spokesman Gary Scheets said in a statement.

The homeowner “armed himself with two handguns, went outside and confronted the suspects who were trying to steal his generator,” Sheets said. One of the males confronted by the resident “turned around and faced” the homeowner, police said. The homeowner then fired his gun, hitting one of the men in the chest, police said. The second fled the scene.

Police arrived in the 2300 block of Franklin Avenue shortly after 2 a.m., and found the wounded man on the ground, having been shot more than once, Scheets said. Police said he was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The man who died was an adult, Scheets said, but his age and the age of the male with him who fled the scene were not immediately available. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the man who was killed.

NOPD’s statement on the fatal shooting, issued Friday afternoon, said investigators are gathering evidence. It does not say how detectives came to the initial determination that the two men were trying to steal the homeowner’s generator, nor does it say whether either of the two men were armed. The statement refers to the homeowner as a “victim” and the two men he confronted as “suspects.” However, the department did not immediately respond to questions Friday about whether police consider the fatal shooting to be justified, or whether the person who fled the scene would face charges.

Anyone with information about the fatal shooting is asked to contact NOPD Homicide Detective Sasha Tousant, the lead investigator on the case, at 504-658-5300 or provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.

Off-duty HPD officer shoots at suspect allegedly breaking into her car in SE Houston
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- An off-duty HPD officer fired at a car burglar in her driveway overnight in southeast Houston, police say.

It happened near Reed Road and MLK Boulevard.

Authorities told ABC13 the officer was at home when she heard a noise outside around 2 a.m.

She says she looked at her home security camera and could see the suspect in her car rummaging through the vehicle.

At that point, she grabbed her service weapon and went outside.

Police say the officer confronted the suspect, then fired one round at him.

"Once she got outside there was an altercation with the male. The officer felt she was in fear of her safety, discharged one round at the suspect. The suspect ran south from here," HPD Lt. Larry Crowson said.

Police did not find any blood, so they do not think the suspect was hit. He has not been found.

The officer is a two-year veteran of the force.

As with all officer-involved shootings, internal affairs is going to look into it.

One person dead following Manatee 'road rage,' incident
    By: Julie Salomone

PARRISH, Fl. — The Manatee County Sheriff's Office said a 32-year-old man is dead after a road rage incident in Parrish.

Deputies said the incident happened around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday near the intersection of Buckeye Road and U.S. 301 in Parrish.

Two drivers were traveling on Buckeye Road. One driver was traveling eastbound and the other driver was going westbound on Buckeye Road.

The shooter told deputies the other driver was swerving in and out of the lane, eventually running him off the road. The shooter thought the other driver may have been drinking, according to Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells.

"The driver of the vehicle that was traveling eastbound on Buckeye was swerving all over the roadway and almost struck him, he came into his lane, he had to swerve to get out of the way," said Sheriff Rick Wells.

Sheriff Rick Wells said both drivers were armed. The shooter told deputies he tried to get the tag number of the truck that was swerving all over the road so he could report him.

"He was trying to get the tag number. I don’t think he was thinking the other driver was going to pull off and confront him," said Sheriff Wells.

The 26-year-old shooter told deputies the other driver approached his passenger's side window and began arguing. The shooter told deputies the other driver brandished a gun so he pulled out his own gun. He shot at the man and called 9-1-1 immediately after the shooting, according to deputies.

EMS pronounced the 32-year-old dead at the scene. The Sheriff said it appears the shooter acted in self-defense, but it is early in the investigation.

"He's shaken. He’s with the investigators right now, giving an interview. He immediately called 9-1-1 and stayed here until deputies arrived. He’s been cooperating with us," said Sheriff Wells.

Deputies said no one witnessed the incident. Detectives will collect evidence and see if it matches the shooter's account of the incident.

Names are not being released at this time. The investigation continues.
