    Local woman shoots, tackles burglar

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) A 5-foot-6, 135-pound man who broke into a Killeen woman’s home before dawn on Sunday ended up facing down the barrel of a gun.

The woman, who was alerted to a break-in by noises outside her house in the 2200 block of Wheeler Avenue, shot, tackled and held down the burglar who remains at large with a gunshot wound to the arm after managing to escape.

The empty-nester, who asked not to be identified, is retired from the Army and lives alone.

She's been looking forward to an upcoming trip across the country at the end of her lease, but after the incident she says she’s packing up earlier than planned.

At around 5:30 Sunday, the woman, an admitted light sleeper, was wide awake when she heard the sound of someone dismantling her porch light and then removing her garage door window.

The man used a trash can for a boost to get through the window.

The woman was ready for him, though.

“I loaded my handgun,” she says.

    “I sat here and waited.”

The burglar entered the home through an unlocked door between the garage and the kitchen, and walked down a hallway that leads to her bedroom.

She first saw his cellphone light and then his silhouette as he stepped into the bedroom doorway.

That’s when she fired a shot with her 9mm handgun, striking him in the arm.

“He screamed and ran,” she said.

She followed him down the hallway and fired again, but missed.

“It ricocheted off the floor, into the closet,” she said.

The intruder tried to escape the way he came in, but he couldn't climb out of the garage door window with his wounded arm, so he went back into the house.

They two scuffled and the gun discharged.

The shot hit the dining room wall.

She managed to overpower the man, holding him down while trying to call police.

“He told me, ‘I didn't get anything. You already shot me, so just let me go,’” she said.

The man managed to break free and escaped through the front door, but not before she got off a final warning shot that went through a wall near the front door.

“This is someone's child, someone's son, who took the wrong direction somewhere to try me,” she says.

“But he got the right house because hopefully, he learned a lesson.”

Although she spent nine years in the Army, she says this the first time she ever shot someone.

She credits the training she received through a self-defense handgun class with keeping her calm.

The burglar was shirtless and was wearing gray sweat pants.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 254-526-TIPS (8477).

Deputies: Spartanburg homeowner catches man who reportedly tried to break into his home just hours before

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (FOX Carolina) The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said a homeowner who protected his home from an attempted breaking and entering ended up catching the suspect hours after the incident.

According to a report, deputies received a call of a breaking and entering in the process at a residence on Lawson Fork Road around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 23.

The responding deputy made contact with the homeowner, who told them he was in bed when he heard his doorbell ringing. When the ringing stopped, he said he then heard knocking on his backdoor.

The homeowner told deputies he was trying to find his firearm when he heard one of his sitting room windows shatter. That's when he observed a man in a yellow t-shirt trying to get inside his home.

Deputies say the homeowner fired two shots from his pistol at the potential intruder, causing the suspect to flee. The homeowner said he had a home security camera system that corroborated his story.

Deputies were advised that one of the homeowner's neighbors also has security footage of a suspect trying to break into his own home. After reviewing the footage, deputies determined it was the same person that tried to break into both homes.

Later Sunday evening, around 11:55, the same deputy was dispatched to the intersection of Settle Road and Lawson Fork Road in reference to the homeowner detaining the suspect who attempted to break into his house.

The deputy was advised by the homeowner that he was unloading plywood to fix his broken window when he saw someone resembling the breaking and entering suspect riding a bicycle down his street.

He and two other men followed the bike rider and confronted him about the incidents. According to the homeowner, the cyclist dropped to the ground - apologizing for the attempted break-in.

The responding deputy arrived to find the man, who has now been identified as 18-year-old Anton Sidorchuk, laying on the ground.

Sidorchuk was arrested and charged with burlgary first degree.

Homeowner shoots intruder to death, sheriff says
    Cory McCordPosted: 5:55 PM, June 25, 2019

The scene where authorities said a homeowner shot an intruder to death at a home on Rockcliff Drive on June 25, 2019.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas - A homeowner shot an intruder to death Tuesday at a central Harris County home, according to Harris County investigators.

    What happened

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the woman was alone cleaning at her home in the 9200 block of Rockcliff Drive around 3 p.m. when she heard what she initially thought was a gunshot.

When she saw broken glass, Gonzalez said the woman went to a back room, got a gun and hid in a closet.

When the intruder opened the door to the closet, the homeowner fired one shot, striking the intruder, according to Gonzalez.

The intruder was pronounced dead at the scene.

    What the sheriff is saying

"It's a scary situation. She's tending to her own home ... inside her own home when all of a sudden this happens in broad daylight," Gonzalez said. "You can see there are many children out here as well and this could have been anyone else's house."

Gonzalez said the house had been broken into before and the homeowners had installed burglar bars in an attempt to dissuade people from breaking in.

    How is the homeowner?

The homeowner was shaken up, but OK, the sheriff said. Gonzalez said the intruder was wearing a mask and gloves and it appeared that he used an ice chest to enter the broken window.

She is cooperating with authorities and Gonzalez said she did what she had to do to protect herself.

"Kudos to her for acting so quickly and protecting herself," Gonzalez said. "We've seen several instances where homeowners have had to protect themselves and their property because people are out there committing crimes."

The case will be referred to the district attorney's office to determine if any charges will be filed.

CMPD: No criminal charges filed against wife in shooting death of Meck Co. deputy

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is not pursuing criminal charges in the 2018 shooting death of a Mecklenburg County deputy.
On January 15, 2018, Deputy James Hawkins was shot inside an Ashley Meadow Drive house where he and his wife lived.
Police say his wife – also a deputy who was off-duty - called 911 and she said that her husband reached for a knife so she shot him with her service weapon.

On Tuesday, officials provided information that CMPD did not pursue criminal charges after “careful review of all the evidence obtained.”
“After a separate and independent review of the case, the Mecklenburg County DA’s Office concluded that they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the subject did not act in self-defense,” the email stated.

In March of 2018, it was revealed that the wife evidently spoke with investigators at some point because the autopsy report says the two were having drinks then an argument started.
According to the autopsy report, the wife said her husband began throwing things and then got a large kitchen knife and threatened her - and that’s when she got her gun and shot him.

During the ongoing investigation, the wife has been on paid administrative leave and has not worked for more than a year.

Female homeowner shoots, kills intruder inside her home in San Bernardino County
    LUCERNE VALLEY, Calif. (FOX 11)

    - A woman shot and killed an intruder inside her Lucerne Valley home overnight Tuesday, deputies said.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, around 12:28 a.m., deputies from the Victor Valley Sheriff's Station responded to a residence in the 35000 block of Harvest Moon Street in Lucerne Valley following the report of a shooting.

Inside the home, deputies located the suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Shea Manigult, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Deputies and emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures; however, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female homeowner told deputies that she was asleep in her home when she her dog started barking, waking her up. The victim entered a bedroom where she saw Manigult hiding, deputies said. The victim told deputies that she became frightened and yelled at the man, telling him he didn't belong inside her home. The homeowner then returned to the living room and armed herself with a gun, deputies said.

Authorities said Manigult approached the victim, and, fearing for her safety, she fired once at the suspect, striking him.

Throughout the course of the investigation, detectives determined that Manigult had forced entry into the home prior to the victim locating him in the bedroom.

The victim has not been arrested.

The investigation is ongoing and the case will be given to the District Attorney's Office for review.
