Tallahassee man found not guilty of second degree murder

    http://www.tallahassee.com/story/new...der/872054001/
A Tallahassee man was found not guilty of second degree murder in a 2015 shooting after jurors agreed it was in self-defense.

Jurors deliberated for just two hours Wednesday before reaching a verdict in the case against 30-year-old Michael Mason.

Mason was charged with the 2015 shooting of David Queen during an argument at a north Tallahassee apartment complex.

Mason’s attorneys contended he and Queen were in an argument moments before the shooting in which Mason believed he was going to be robbed.

At the time, Mason called 911 dispatchers to report the shooting, telling them over the phone that Queen had "charged him."

Attorney Nate Prince, who defended Mason, said the state’s only witness gave inconsistent statements, fled the scene and was uncooperative with investigators and prosecutors in participating in the trial.

“There was no evidence inconsistent with my client’s statements he was trying to rob him,” Prince said.

State Attorney Jack Campbell said the crux of a self-defense claim rests on whether a person feels threatened and there is no duty to retreat.

The verdict is heartbreaking for the victim’s family, Campbell said.

“I respect the jury’s verdict who thought it was clearly a case of Stand Your Ground self-defense,” Campbell said. “I don’t think an argument should end in anybody being dead.”

Fatal shooting in Oshkosh was apparently in self-defense

    http://fox11online.com/news/local/fa...n-self-defense
OSHKOSH (WLUK) -- The shooting death of a man in Oshkosh on Nov. 5 was apparently self-defense by a homeowner during a robbery attempt -- and the man who allegedly drove the victim to the home for the robbery has been charged with felony murder.
Cashmiere Hill was shot and killed while breaking into a home at 815 Waugoo Street, according to the criminal complaint for Troy Summers, the man now charged.

Nick Davis said someone broke into his residence and demanded money – possibly because he made a social media post about winning at the casino.
    According to the criminal complaint:

While lying down he said he heard glass breaking in the kitchen and when he went to go investigate he observed a black male trying to get into his house and at one point Nick said that the male had yelled over something to him in the form of, “give me your (expletive) money,” and fired a round at Nick, striking him in the wrist. Nick said at this point he fired back in self-defense, shooting off several rounds, the number that he thought was approximately eight rounds, and that he must have hit the guy cause he had fallen back into the stairwell and ultimately towards the door. Once the male had fallen back Nick said that he was able to call 911 as well as yell to neighbors after going outside yelling for help.

Davis has not been charged, and no charges have been requested at this point, according to the Winnebago County District Attorney’s office.
Summers told police he called Davis to make sure he was home, then drove Hill to a spot about two blocks from Davis’ home.

“When I dropped the dude who died off so that he could rob Nicky Davis he asked me if I was gonna be around and I said yes that I would be around to pick him up. I then drove over by Otter Av. And I then heard multiple gunshots in a row and it sounded like a small caliber gun and the shots got loud. The shots sounded like they were coming from the area of Nick Davis' house. I then left…,” the complaint quotes Summers as saying.

Summers is also charged with armed robbery and armed burglary. Summers appeared in court Wednesday, where a $500,000 cash bond was set. He returns to court for a status conference Monday, with a preliminary hearing set for Wednesday, according to court records.

Stephon Harris, 21, also faces armed robbery and burglary charges. Harris and Hill allegedly went to Davis’ home before the incident when shots were fired, and then Hill went back, according to the complaint. He is being held on a $100,000 cash bond, and also has a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Resident comes home, finds burglar and fatally shoots him

A burglar was fatally shot by someone inside the home he entered late Friday, Montgomery police said.

The police department is conducting a death investigation after Danny Williams, 42, was fatally shot during the burglary in the 100 block of West South Boulevard, according to a news release from MPD.

About 10:30 p.m. police found Williams inside the home with the gunshot wound, and he was taken to Baptist Medical Center South where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators believe Williams forcibly entered the residence and was shot when someone who lives there returned home and located Williams inside. The occupant of the home was not injured.

Durham police say man, woman shot on Dallas Street will be charged

    Read more here: http://www.heraldsun.com/news/local/...#storylink=cpy
A man and woman shot Thursday night in the 2200 block of Dallas Street are now suspects in a home invasion, police reported Friday afternoon.

Officers responded to a 911 call about the shooting at 7:15 p.m. Thursday. They found a 16-year-old woman and a 16-year-old man who had been shot. Both were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, police reported.

The homeowner told police that he was inside the house with another person when someone tried to kick in his door. As one suspect reached in through a broken window to open the door, the residents told police they fired shots. The woman was shot in the back and the man was shot multiple times, police said. At least one was believed to have been armed.

Police arrested a second woman, 17-year-old Alexis Shaw, and charged her with first-degree burglary. Shaw also was charged with prior warrants for burglary, conspiracy and felony larceny in connection with a Nov. 10 burglary near Nichols Farm Drive. She was placed in Durham County Jail under a $510,000 bond.

First-degree burglary charges are pending against the two teen suspects who were shot, police said.

Man shot by mom says she saved his life

    http://www.wrdw.com/content/news/458635503.html
BROWNSVILLE, Ky (WBKO) -- Barry Wilkerson, who was battling severe depression and suicidal thoughts, decided he was going to take his own life.

He traveled to his mother's home in Grayson County, Kentucky to say his last goodbyes. He told his mom, Paula Sims, that he loved her and that he was going to commit suicide.

"I was ready to end my life, and that was that." Wilkerson told Gray affiliate WBKO.

Sims begged her son to stop as he ran out the door of the home, locking himself in his vehicle. He began to slit his wrists with a blade he had in his truck.

Sims followed behind but was too late to keep him from locking the door. She reacted by firing two shots through the passenger window of Wilkerson's truck, striking him in the shoulder and through the hand into the leg.

Wilkerson recalled his mom's words, "She told me she was going to shoot me if I didn't stop, and she superficially wounded me from hurting myself any further."

Unable to hold the knife, Wilkerson fled to a nearby church parking lot where his initial plan was to bleed until he died. But he prayed and says that God gave him the strength to get through the obstacle he encountered.

He drove himself to Twin Lake's Hospital in Leitchfield before being transferred to UofL Hospital, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. He returned home on Saturday evening.

The gunshot wounds serve as a reminder, that his mother was willing to do whatever it took to keep her son. Her actions, pure love.

Wilkerson said, "If she didn't love me the way she did, she would've never pulled that trigger."

Barry and his mom, Paula, have had limited communication since the incident last Friday, but his love for his her is stronger than ever. Wilkerson saying that if there was one thing he could tell her, it would be this: "Momma, I love you more than anything. Only God above knows how much I love you. Thank you for being my mom."

Barry Wilkerson was battling severe depression at the time he tried to take his own life. He recalls not being honest with his doctor at times. He is urging those who struggle with similar situations to call their doctor immediately and seek medical guidance.
