    Benzie homeowner shoots suspected intruder
Suspect hospitalized with minor injuries: release

BY JORDAN TRAVIS jtravis@record-eagle.com2 hrs ago
HONOR — A suspected intruder took a shotgun blast to the legs after a homeowner confronted him, according to the Benzie County sheriff's department.

The homeowner, 79, discovered an intruder inside his pole building at around 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday and grabbed a shotgun, according to a release from the department. He told the intruder to leave, and fired a single shot when the intruder reportedly approached him in a threatening manner.

Sheriff's deputies were called to the Inland Township home to investigate the shooting, and the homeowner watched over the suspect until they and EMTs arrived, according to the release. The 37-year-old suspect was taken to Munson Medical Center with minor injuries to both legs — Benzie County Sheriff Ted Schendel said he was hit with birdshot.

The department will seek a warrant for the suspect's arrest once he's released from the hospital, Schendel said.

The department has turned the investigation over to the county prosecutor's office for review, according to the release.

    The homeowner wasn't arrested.

"We believe he was defending himself, he did this in self-defense, but the prosecutor ultimately gets to make that decision," Schendel said.

No one from the prosecutor's office was available for comment late Wednesday afternoon.

Woman shoots ex-boyfriend after he strangles her, deputies say
The woman heard someone outside, then found the man hiding

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. - A woman shot her ex-boyfriend after the Bedford County Sheriff's Office says he strangled her and later pointed a gun at her.

Just after 12 a.m. on Wednesday, the Bedford County Sheriff's Office says they received a call from a woman on Shady Grove Drive, who said she heard someone outside of her home.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the woman then called her father, who lives next door. When he arrived, officials say he and the woman began to check around the outside of the house.

Deputies say she then found 36-year-old Jesse Carter, of Vinton, her ex-boyfriend, hiding behind her air conditioning unit outside.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the woman said Carter grabbed her around the neck, forcing her to drop the gun she was carrying at the time.

Deputies say that after struggling, she was able to run away. Carter then assaulted the woman's father.

Both Carter and the father then entered the woman's home, according to the Sheriff's Office, where Carter took another gun from the woman's purse. Authorities say Carter then went back outside, with the gun, and walked around the house.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the woman said that when Carter walked around the house, he pointed the gun at her.

The Sheriff's Office then says the woman then shot Carter with the first gun he knocked out of her hand when he assaulted her.

Carter was transported to the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, along with the father, who reported having chest pains.

On Monday, the woman got a protective order on Carter, according to the Sheriff's Office. Deputies served Carter with the protective order that evening.

Deputies say Carter was released from the hospital Wednesday morning, where he was arrested and charged with two counts of assault and battery, pointing a gun, possessing a gun and violating the protective order.

Carter is being held in the Bedford Adult Detention Center without bond.

Pair suspected of breaking into vehicles in Dallas flee into Highland Park after being shot, police say
    Yesterday

    Metro Video
Updated at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday: Revised throughout to include additional details from police.

A shooting reported Tuesday night near Turtle Creek turned out to be part of a string of crimes that began in Dallas and ended in Highland Park, police say.

Shortly before 8 p.m., a caller reported that he shot a man and woman he saw break into his vehicle in the 4000 block of U.S. Highway 75 and take property. The man, a commissioned security guard, said he fired the shots when the pair drove their truck toward him, Dallas police said.

The pair fled into Highland Park, where the man, Devon Flowers, dropped off the woman, identified as Crystal French, in a strip center in the 4200 block of Oak Lawn Avenue near Wycliff Avenue.

Witnesses said Flowers told them that French, who had an injury to her arm, needed help, police said.

Flowers, 30, reportedly sped away from the scene in a truck but crashed into another vehicle a few blocks away at Preston Road and Beverly Drive

Officers from Dallas, Highland Park, University Park and Southern Methodist University responded to help, and a perimeter was set up to search for Flowers, who ran away from the crash, said Lt. Lance Koppa of the Highland Park Department of Public Safety.

An off-duty officer working at Highland Park Village found Flowers shortly after in the 4200 block of Livingston Avenue, he said.

Flowers and French were taken to hospitals. Their conditions were not available late Tuesday.

The driver of the vehicle that had been struck by the truck was hospitalized with injuries not thought to be life-threatening, Koppa said.

Flowers and French face two counts of aggravated robbery. Flowers may face additional charges out of Dallas in addition to a charge of failure to leave ID in connection with the Highland Park crash.

Detectives filed two aggravated assault reports against the man who fired the shots. The case will be referred to a grand jury.

Bend-area man shoots, kills cougar that killed livestock
Encounter came after 2 sheep, turkey found dead

    Cougar attacks farm animals
BEND, Ore. - A Bend-area resident shot and killed a cougar on his property earlier this week after it attacked and killed two of his Shetland sheep and a turkey.

Mark and Candy Davidson live on about 20 acres just east of Bend. They raise the sheep for their wool to create and sell fiber. On Monday afternoon, Mark found the dead animals.

"We didn't know about the cougar until we actually found it at nighttime when we were out there," Candy Davidson said Wednesday. "We thought we were going out for coyotes."

Candy said she let her dog out Monday evening and checked on the herd once more. She saw glowing eyes in the distance -- and the animal darted.

The couple decided to walk the perimeter of their fence line, carrying a rifle. Candy said she lifted her flashlight on the far side of their property and saw eyes above the fence line. They knew it was a cougar.

Mark said he shot the cougar, but it started coming toward them, so he fired several more shots. The couple decided it was too dark to check on it, and waited until the morning. They said they found it alive the next day and shot it once more.

The Davidsons contacted an Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife official, who confirmed the cougar was a male.

"They were completely understanding about the fact that we had shot it," Mark said.

According to ODFW, homeowners and property owners have a legal right to protect themselves and their property, even if it means taking lethal action against a cougar.

The cougar buried the sheep under dirt, grass, and twigs, which is why it took the Davidsons some time to find their bodies.

"To lose them that way is kind of horrific," Candy said.

She said she wants to focus on protecting the rest of her sheep and other animals.

"One of the ewes that we lost, that we didn't realize at first, was our first ewe that we had bought when we moved here," Candy said. "She was our oldest ewe."

Candy said the last thing she expected was a cougar.

Suspects Allegedly Armed with ‘Assault Rifle’ Flee as Pharmacist Opens Fire with Revolver
    15 Aug 2018

Delmarva.com reports that the two suspects were allegedly wearing ski masks when they entered the pharmacy and Wasim Amir was in his office, but came out amid “some commotion.” He said, “The man with the rifle ordered everyone down on the ground,” Amir said, “including one customer, a woman, who happened to be in the store.”

Amir grabbed a revolver out of his desk drawer and walked out to confront the suspects. He said, “When he saw my revolver, he yelled to the other man to run, saying ‘He has a gun’ and both of them started running away. I fired once in their direction, but it doesn’t seem like anyone was hit.”

Pharmacy workers pressed panic buttons to alert police, as the suspects fled.

Police arrested 22-year-old Cody Allen King and 22-year-old Justin Michael Bull. Both were charged with “armed robbery, robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.”

Motorcyclist describes self-defense shooting in I-5 road rage attack
    By KIRO 7 News Staff
    August 16, 2018 at 10:42 am
A 24-year-old motorcyclist who fatally shot a 60-year-old man as he attacked her along I-5 described the incident for the first time in an exclusive interview with a fellow motorcyclist – who has also made news himself because of a confrontation while he was riding.

Aubrey Bowlin told her story to Alex Randall, which is published on Randall’s YouTube channel “Squid Tips,” for motorcycle enthusiasts.

Alex Randall is suing the King County Sheriff’s Office – alleging an off-duty detective violated his civil rights when he pulled a gun on Randall at a traffic light in August 2017, and didn’t immediately identify himself, or issue Randall a citation.

Bowlin describes what led up to the confrontation on I-5 near Milton in February, with Bruce W. Jones on Feb. 8, 2018, after Jones boxed Bowlin in on the shoulder of the freeway at Milton, according the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Pierce County prosecutor concluded in March that Bowlin acted in self-defense.

There is a GoFundMe page for Bowlin’s medical expenses.

Court docs: Woman pulls gun on exposer who had ‘just shot up crystal meth’
    Posted: Aug 16, 2018 8:40 PM EDT
    PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Portland police say they have arrested a man who allegedly broke into a woman’s home and exposed himself to her while high on methamphetamine.

Marques Seville Hardges, 43, followed the woman into an elevator at her northeast Portland apartment on July 31 and told her he had “just shot up crystal meth,” court documents state.

The man exited the elevator on the same floor as the woman and, when she opened her door, ran up and pushed her inside.

The woman told police the man “wildly looked around” her apartment, grabbed a pill bottle and $60 cash and then exposed himself to her.

According to court documents, the woman then pulled out a concealed handgun from her purse.

“The gun wasn't the first thing that came to my mind...it was how am I going to get out of here," Kim said. “I was in a sheer panic, I was just in a panic."

The man dropped the bottle and ran out of the apartment with the $60 cash.

"He saw it and ran," Kim said.

The woman told police that at the time of the alleged crime, a visitor she was expecting arrived and buzzed her intercom.

The visitor took photos of Hardges leaving the complex and shared them with local law enforcement, who say they recognized Hardges from multiple other recent incidents.

"I’ve had a real hard time since then, struggling with because it brings back horrible memories for me," Kim said.

Unfortunately, she says this isn’t her first time dealing with sexual assault.

"There must be someplace inside me that's just not going to let that happen again," Kim said.

Now, she hopes everyone remembers to never let strangers inside.

"We need to look out for our neighbors, there’s a reason we live in a building that has security," Kim said.

TriMet officers spotted Hardges at Southeast Boulevard and Southeast Taylor Street Aug. 14 and arrested him. He faces sodomy, attempted sex abuse, theft and burglary charges.

There is a sign now posted at her apartment complex asking people to keep the door shut.
