Police: Neighbor helps stop robbery of pregnant pizza delivery driver, 2 teens arrested
    Local | WSBTV June 20, 2018 ATLANTA —

An armed neighbor is being praised for coming to the rescue when a pregnant pizza delivery driver was attacked and robbed Wednesday night.

The incident happened at Waits Avenue in Southwest Atlanta.

Atlanta Police Department officials told Channel 2 Action News two 16-year-olds, a boy and a girl, were arrested in connection with the crime and charged with assault, possession of a firearm and attempt to commit robbery.

The neighbor said he caught the suspects beating the woman with a rifle. He said he then pulled out his gun.

“One of them turned around and had a gun in his hand," Dennis Madaris said.

Madaris said he didn’t back down.

"I told them, ‘Drop the gun or I’ll drop you,’ and they threw the gun down and all three of them took off,” Madaris said.

Officials said the victim suffered cuts and bruises on her face and was taken to the hospital as a precautionary reason due to her pregnancy. Police told Channel 2 Action News she was alert and breathing.

Judd: Fort Meade shooting was self defense

    By
Posted at 9:15 PM Updated at 9:15 PM
WINTER HAVEN — Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd defended the actions of a Fort Meade man who shot and killed one man and wounded two others Monday in a dispute over a missing pit bull named Princess.

Judd said it’s up to the State Attorney’s Office to decide whether charges are warranted in the shooting, but the evidence so far indicates that Charles Peddycoart, 48, was defending his life and that of his girlfriend when he drew a 9mm handgun on his front porch.

“Charles was defending himself and his girlfriend under the front porch of his house, under imminent threat,” Judd said at a Thursday afternoon news conference at his Winter Haven headquarters.

Also on Thursday, Judd’s office released a recording of the shooting that depicts a live account of Peddycoart’s girlfriend calling a 911 dispatcher. The woman, who has not yet been identified, is all but drowned out by loud voices.

Judd said the girlfriend can be heard yelling: “We didn’t touch your dog.” There are more screams as gunshots erupt.

According to Judd, the incident was the result of an erroneous assumption on the part of Calvin Johnson, who accused Peddycoart, a neighbor, of stealing his dog.

An investigation revealed that the dog had followed Peddycoart and his girlfriend as they walked earlier on Monday to a nearby Dollar General store. The dog was later picked up by a woman and her 15-year-old son, who took the animal home.

Princess had no collar or any identification, Judd said, and the mother and son assumed it was a stray.

Johnson, 30, and his roommates, Teconsa McDonald, 22, and Edward Burgess, 18, confronted Peddycoart Monday afternoon at Peddycoart’s home. Judd said they brought with them three other people who remained at a distance.

Johnson was the aggressor, Judd said, but he and his roommates moved in a threatening manner toward Peddycoart, who warned the men that he had a gun, and they’d better leave. McDonald responded to the threat, telling Peddycoart that he, too, was armed, though McDonald was unarmed when taken into custody, Judd said.

Peddycoart told investigators that Johnson and the other men refused to leave, and that Johnson came toward him, a sheriff’s news release said.

“One witness said, ‘I know what a mob looks like and they (Peddycoart and his girlfriend) were about to be stampeded,’ ” Judd said.

Peddycoart, a military veteran, shot his gun six times, striking Johnson twice in the chest, Judd said. McDonald was killed by a bullet that struck the left side of his body. Burgess was struck in the torso.

Johnson and Burgess remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, sheriff’s spokesman Brian Bruchey said.

“We have one man dead and two clinging to life all over Calvin (Johnson) thinking these people took his dog,” Judd said, adding that Johnson likely will face criminal charges in the death of his roommate. “It’s a sad situation.”

Police: Driver detained after ramming 2 people; shots fired during west side disturbance

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Shots were fired—but police say no one was hit—after a bizarre sequence of events that began with a disturbance on the west side.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, a woman behind the wheel of a vehicle intentionally struck two people near 30th Street and Winton Avenue Thursday morning. This started at a family gathering that lasted into the early morning hours. Around 5:20 a.m., a fight broke out.

The woman, who police said was intoxicated, then tried to hit a third person. That individual managed to avoid the car, but he slipped and fell. He then opened fire on the vehicle, telling police he feared for his life.

The shots hit the vehicle but no one else was hit. Police found the driver down the street at a local bar and detained her after they said she ran from the scene.

The man who fired the shots was being questioned, police said, but wasn’t under arrest. He is cooperating with the investigation; police said it’s unlikely he’ll face charges because the shooting appears to be self-defense.

The two individuals who were struck by the vehicle suffered minor injuries, police said.

The woman faces preliminary charges of criminal recklessness with a vehicle and operating while intoxicated.

Here’s one from South Africa. In America I think this is easily justified self defense. In South Africa, sounds like they are investigating him for murder. Hopefully they realize the guy was defending his life.

Florissant police say woman killed man in self-defense at a home there

FLORISSANT • A woman who fatally shot a man inside her home Tuesday did so in self-defense, police say.

Police characterized the incident as "domestic" Tuesday afternoon, and said Thursday that they would not seek criminal charges against her for the death of 34-year-old Randall Gaston.

The couple were engaged and living together, according to police.

Florissant officers were dispatched to the home, in the 200 block of Raymond Drive, for a "domestic homicide" about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to a press release from the department.

Once there, a woman told them she lived there and let them in. They found Gaston inside with what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

This is not a traditional citizen making a difference story. A man was stabbed in a basement. He shot a gun missing the person who stabbed him, but the gunshot woke others up and alerted them to the fact that the guy in the basement needed help. Having a firearm made a positive difference for the victim.

Landlord broke into WVC home and stabbed sleeping man, police say

WEST VALLEY CITY — One man was stabbed multiple times and another arrested early Friday in what police believe is a possible landlord-tenant dispute.

Just before 3 a.m., a man asleep in the basement of a West Valley home near 2100 West and Apple Farms Drive (3700 South) was violently awakened by a man who had entered the house uninvited and seemingly undetected, said West Valley Police Sgt. Scott Arnold.

"The victim was asleep when he was awoken to an individual on top of him, attacking him," he said.

The victim was stabbed multiple times in the head and arms, according to Arnold. As the intruder was leaving, he fired one shot at the man, he said. The gunshot missed and did not injure anyone.

The shot woke up the people sleeping upstairs who called 911. The family member told police that he believed his uncle, who was the injured man in the basement, was shot.

"Through the course of our investigation we were able to determine the victim was actually stabbed not shot," Arnold said.

The victim was able to identify the attacker as his landlord, Arnold said. Detectives went to a residence in Herriman shortly after the attack and arrested Manhdrake Van Dang, 48, for investigation of attempted murder and aggravated burglary.

A motive for the attack was not immediately known, but Arnold said the victim was the intended target. How Dang got into the house was not clear, he said. There were no signs of forced entry into the house.

The man who was injured was hospitalized in serious condition.

Charges dropped against rural Alberta homeowner accused of shooting trespasser
Eddie Maurice was facing charges of aggravated assault, pointing a firearm and careless use of a firearm

Meghan Grant · CBC News · Posted: Jun 22, 2018 9:00 AM MT | Last Updated: 3 minutes ago

All charges have been dropped against a rural Alberta homeowner accused of shooting a trespasser on his property near Okotoks.

Eddie Maurice, 33, was charged after a suspected thief was wounded when shots were fired on Maurice's property on Feb. 24.

On Friday morning at the Okotoks courthouse, prosecutor Jim Sawa withdrew charges of aggravated assault, pointing a firearm and careless use of a firearm.

Supporters have rallied at each of Maurice's previous court appearances, framing the case around the issue of rural landowners' rights to defend their property.

The situation fuelled debate about how far rural landowners can go when faced with those situations.

The shooting on Maurice's property occurred weeks after a Saskatchewan farmer was found not guilty after killing a young Indigenous man who had driven onto his property with a group of friends.

Gerald Stanley had been charged with second-degree murder after shooting Colten Boushie in the head in August 2016. That case had inflamed tensions Canada-wide between Indigenous populations and rural landowners.

Defence lawyer Tonii Roulston had previously said she wanted to see the charges withdrawn or stayed.

    Suspected thief charged

Police were called to Maurice's property at about 5 a.m. MT on Feb. 24 for reports of shots being fired. Maurice told officers he saw someone rummaging through his vehicles

Two people fled the scene but one suspect was located soon after, suffering from an injury.

Ryan Watson, who had been shot in the arm, was charged with trespassing, mischief and theft.

Rural property crime is a growing issue across the Prairies.

The province recently announced increased funding of $10 million to address rural crime.

Police urging people not to engage with trespassers, rather to immediately report incidents but rural residents feel police response times are often too slow.
