Billy Cancel says he was trying to defend himself

    MANCHESTER, N.H. —
The Manchester man who shot a lifelong friend has been found not guilty of second-degree murder.

A jury returned the verdict on Wednesday after seven hours of deliberations.

Billy Maldonado Cancel said he was trying to defend himself from the gun that Jonathan Vazquez-Ojeda grabbed during their fight over a woman last year.

Cancel grew up with Vazquez-Ojeda in Puerto Rico.

As soon as Cancel left the courthouse, he called his mother in Puerto Rico to tell her of his acquittal.

Police: Father shoots man dead after robbery suspect threatens kids with gun

    http://www.wfaa.com/news/crime/polic...-gun/497547930
Police say that a father shot a man dead after that man threatened his family at a south-side Popeye's on Wednesday night.

The incident happened at the 800 block of Southeast Military Drive.

According to the San Antonio Police Department, a man walked into Popeye's and confronted a family and tried to rob them. Police say that, at that point, the man pulled out a gun and pointed it at the children.

Police say that the father of that family was a carrying a gun, though, and shot the man dead in the restaurant.

Employees locked the restaurant until law enforcement arrived on the scene.

Police have not yet identified the attempted robbery suspect.

CPL holder pulls gun to scare off man attacking her

    STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK)
    - A woman walking her dog in Sterling Heights scared off a man with her licensed gun when he tried to attack her Sunday evening, police say.

As she walked her dog outside Maple Grove apartments near 15 Mile and Van **** that night, the Sterling Heights woman says she got a sinking feeling when she saw a van nearby.

"That's kind of odd - that time of night, why is this van running? And it's a black van with no windows," Sterling Heights Police Chief Dale Dwojakowski said the woman thought.

Police say she noticed a man get out of the van on the other side of the street and started walking parallel to her. Feeling uneasy, the woman, who is in her 40s, and a CPL holder, says she immediately put her hand on her gun that was hidden under her jacket.

    photo
Keeping her eye on the man, and continuing to hold her gun, she got to the end of the street and the suspect disappeared. But then not even a minute later, that's when he came toward her.

"He grabbed the back of her jacket and tried to grab her and pull her towards him," Dwojakowski said.

The woman says she saw the man holding something shiny, possibly a knife.

"She put the gun into the suspect's stomach and said, 'I don't want to kill you,'" Dwojakowski said.

Police say the man appeared shocked and quickly ran off. The woman describes him as a black male in his 30s, medium build, clean shaven, with a scar on his upper lip.

Officials are conducting interviews, working to corroborate the woman's story and verify details of the report. They're also increasing patrols in the area and looking to see if the alleged attack was captured on surveillance video.

York man was shot at, then held at gunpoint after he ran away

    http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/cpl...-attacking-her
    By Hannah Smoot hgsmoot@heraldonline
A Clover homeowner held a York man at gunpoint until police arrived after he heard gunshots Monday, according to a York County Sheriff’s Office report.

The York man told police he and a woman were driving near Lawrence Road and Faulkner Road just before noon Monday when they were shot at by a man in a black Honda, the report says.

The man told police he pulled over, got out of the car and ran through the Clover homeowner’s front yard, the report says.

The Clover homeowner told police he came outside when he heard gunshots and saw the York man run into his barn. He drew his gun and ordered the man to the ground until police came, the report says.

The woman was still in the car and told police the black Honda looked like her ex’s car, but she didn’t want to press charges, the report says.

The York man later told police the man shooting at them was not the woman’s ex, the report says.

Deputies found three 9mm casings on Lawrence Road, the report says.

Police: Man dead in shooting in Fort Smith
    Posted at 1:30 PM
Fort Smith police have determined a man was fatally shot by a woman inside an apartment on X Street on Thursday, according to a news release from the Fort Smith Police Department.

Lt. Don Cobb with FSPD said the woman found in the apartment during officers’ response at 2:30 p.m. Thursday “plainly stated” that she and the deceased man had been in an altercation and she shot him. The woman was then taken into custody without incident and transported to the police department for further questioning, Cobb said.

Details regarding the shooting are still being investigated, including questioning of any witnesses present during the incident, the release states.

“No charges related to the shooting have been filed at this time,” the release states.

Preliminary findings from the incident’s investigation indicate that the deceased man “may have forced his way into the apartment,” which prompted the shooting, the release states. Cobb specifically said FSPD is investigating whether the shooting was in self-defense.

Cobb said he was unsure if the woman sustained any physical injuries in the incident.

“She may have psychological trauma that needs medical attention, but I’m not sure at this point,” Cobb said.

FSPD officers and detectives were assisted by personnel with the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Smith Fire Department and Fort Smith EMS immediately following their response.

“Once the investigation is complete, the case will be presented to the Sebastian County Prosecuting Attorney for the determination to file charges, if any,” the release states.

Court records: Gary homeowner shoots at would-be burglars, sends one to hospital with gunshot wound

    http://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/c...28af743fd.html
GARY — A homeowner reportedly scared off two would-be burglars Nov. 28 and sent one to the hospital with a gunshot wound in his groin area, according to Lake Criminal Court records filed Thursday.

Nicholas Jonathan Reeves and Leventes Avery Strong, both age 24 of Gary, were charged Thursday in Lake Criminal Court. Both face two counts of burglary and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm as a serious violent felon, a probable cause affidavit shows.

The two allegedly targeted the man's home in the 6100 block of West 41st Avenue because Reeves heard the residence had "a lot of guns" to sell, according to court records.

The homeowner told police he was with his girlfriend in the living room watching television when his dogs barked and his security motion light activated, the affidavit stated.

The homeowner reached for his .380 caliber handgun under his pillow when he heard a loud noise in the rear of the residence, court records show.

Police said the homeowner "observed a shadow of someone emerging from the kitchen area walking towards the living room and he heard what he thought was the sound of a shotgun being racked," the affidavit states.

As Strong, who was believed to be the only suspect armed at the time, allegedly went to aim the shotgun at the couch, the homeowner fired his own weapon, the affidavit states.

Strong allegedly fell backwards onto the floor, dropped the shotgun and fled the house with the other suspect.

Strong later wound up at Northlake Methodist Hospital's emergency room for treatment, but initially told police he was shot "while out with a friend, whom he knew only as Johnny."

Strong allegedly called the Lake County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday to say he was not telling the truth about the medical incident that landed him in the hospital, the affidavit stated.

He said he exchanged text messages the evening of Nov. 28 with his friend, Reeves, allegedly about burglarizing a home with several guns. Both Strong and Reeves allegedly admitted to breaking into the home together in interviews with police.

According to the affidavit in this case, Strong was charged in 2013 with three counts of child molestation and one count of incest. After pleading guilty, he was later sentenced in February 2014 to one count of child molestation.

Homeowner holds burglar at gunpoint until police arrive, broadcasts live on facebook
    Chris Nakamoto

    http://www.wbrz.com/news/homeowner-h...e-on-facebook/
BATON ROUGE- A homeowner held a burglar at gunpoint and broadcast the entire thing on facebook live Wednesday until police arrived.

Caesar Ray said his daughter's car alarm went off in the middle of the night. They were working on their home that flooded. That's about the same time that a neighbor called to let them know that she saw a man mulling around their house.

Ray who has law enforcement and past experience working for the Department of Corrections met Roberto Garcia head on in the front yard. He handcuffed him and made sure he stayed put until police arrived.

"You just tried to break into the wrong damn house," Ray is heard saying in the video. "You stay where your located right there. Don't move. Who are you here with? Who are you here with?"

Garcia answered no questions, and was carted off to jail where he was booked on two charges: auto burglary, and attempted burglary of an inhabited dwelling.

Ray said he's having trouble understanding why his house was targeted when all the lights were on and three cars were in the driveway. He urged other people not to do what he did unless they have law enforcement experience.

"Be vigilant," Ray said. "Continue to be observant, especially when you are coming home. Before you just pull in your driveway, look around and don't just jump out of your vehicle."

Garcia is being held in the East Baton Rouge Parish jail on a $20,000 bond

St. Louis Man Acquitted in Love Triangle Killing
A St. Louis man has been acquitted of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend.

    https://www.usnews.com/news/best-sta...iangle-killing
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A St. Louis man has been acquitted of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that jurors on Thursday found 28-year-old Adnan Husidic not guilty of first-degree murder, armed criminal action and burglary in the March 2016 shooting death of 26-year-old Jose Garcia Jr.

Prosecutors said Husidic went to his ex-girlfriend's St. Louis apartment to kill her new boyfriend, pushed his way into her apartment and shot Garcia twice. Husidic testified that he killed Garcia in self-defense after coming to her apartment to return a bin of laundry.

The shooting followed several days of back-and-forth Facebook and text messages between Garcia, Triplett and Husidic. In some of the messages, Garcia warned Husidic of possible "gunplay" and made death threats, including mentioning his upcoming funeral.

    Ellport homeowner fatally shoots intruder

    ELLPORT, Pennsylvania -
Ellwood City police are investigating a shooting that happened early friday morning in the borough of Ellport.

Our sister news station based out of Pittsburgh, WPXI, is reporting that an 85 year old man – Don Lutz -- shot one of two intruders during an altercation in his Jamison Avenue home just before 1:30 am on Friday. That intruder was killed while the other fled. Police are reportedly searching for that second intruder and think that Lutz might have been targeted.

WPXI spoke with Lutz, who said he's a litle sore but is OK. Ellwood city police would not say much when we reached out to them early Friday morning, but stay connected with 21 News as we continue to learn more on this developing story.
