Girl, 15, acted as victim in armed home invasion, deputies say

    http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/pa...925-story.html
    Adam Sacasa
A 15-year-old girl went from being the victim of an armed kidnapping to being arrested for helping set up a West Boynton home invasion, according to a Palm Beach Sheriff’s arrest report.

The girl hatched a plan to knock on the door of a friend’s house, located in the 5300 block of Stevens Road in West Boynton, at which time two masked burglars were supposed to barge into the home and demand money.

On August 22, the plan was put into motion. When her friend’s dad opened the door, she began to cry and asked to call her mom. He invited her inside and closed the door, messing up the plan, she later told detectives.

But a second chance for the planned burglary appeared when the girlfriend of the homeowner arrived. The burglars pointed guns at her just after she pulled into the driveway, and ordered her to knock on the door.

The homeowner opened the door and the burglars threatened to shoot the woman if he didn’t let them in. The man ignored the threat, slammed the door and went to grab his own guns, according to the report.

When the man opened the door again, the robbers had taken off in his girlfriend’s Chevy Tahoe. He described one of the men as having a “war gun” with a knife on the end. The other had a handgun, he told deputies.

Police arrived and when they interviewed the girl, she claimed she had been abducted at gunpoint, forced into a vehicle, beat up, and dropped off at her friend’s house.

Detectives said her story seemed to change every time she talked with a detective and new things were added. It also didn’t match up with the other victim’s accounts.

“When I confronted her about the inconsistencies in her story and how her statements differed from that of the two victims, she changed her story again,” the detective wrote in the report.

That’s when she told the detective that she wasn’t abducted, but instead working with four other guys to stage the robbery, two of which she knew but refused to name.

She was arrested and booked into jail Friday.

“She’s has just been arrested for now but her age and charges of armed carjacking and armed home invasion qualify her to be charged as an adult,” State Attorney Michael Edmondson said Monday.

She was released from Palm Beach County Jail Friday after posting $5,000 bond.

Sheriff: 69-year-old Arkansan says she shot man in self-defense

Authorities say a 69-year-old woman shot a man at her residence on Thursday.

According to a news release from the Baxter County sheriff’s office, deputies responded to a residence on 29 Baxter County Road, just off of U.S. 62 in Mountain Home, shortly before 9 p.m.

When they arrived, they found a 26-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to a local hospital where he was in "good condition" Friday.

The woman who owned the residence said she shot him in self-defense after he began “threatening her and acting in an aggressive manner.”

Stabbing victim shoots man outside of Willowbrook Mall
Two hospitalized in melee without a known motive

As Black Friday bargain-hunters shopped inside, two men were injured just after noon Friday in a stabbing-turned-gunfight outside Willowbrook Mall.

Both were airlifted to hospitals in the Texas Medical Center for treatment, according to the Houston Police Department.

The popular north Houston shopping center off Tomball Parkway was filled with thousands of Black Friday deal shoppers when the incident happened. No one besides the two men were hurt, police said.

A spokeswoman for GGP, the mall's Chicago-based property manager, said the "isolated incident occurred in the parking lot near Sears" and directed further inquiries to HPD.

"We take safety and security very seriously," Lindsay Kahn, GGP's senior manager of public relations, wrote in an email.

HPD spokeswoman Jodi Silva said the melee began as a fight.

"The first male stabs the second male," she said.

The stabbed man responded by firing a gun at his attacker, Silva said.

The stabbed man was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in stable condition. The man with the gunshot wound went to Ben Taub Hospital. His status was unknown, Silva said.

Police did not release the name of either man. No charges have been filed and no motive has been determined, Silva said.

More info on post 796. Looks like the armed citizen may have stopped a mass shooting (even though technically it is not one because the citizen stepped up).

Auto shop employees credited with taking down accused Rockledge gunman

One dead, two injured in Rockledge shooting at Schlenker Automotive Friday evening. Video by Lamaur Stancil and Malcolm Denemark

ROCKLEDGE — A man armed with a .45-caliber handgun and a lot of ammunition wandered onto an auto repair shop property and began firing in the parking lot Friday afternoon, police said.

The gunman killed one employee and paralyzed a second. That's when the employees at Schlenker Automotive fought back with equal force, Rockledge police chief Joseph La Sata said.

"The manager, who was a concealed weapons permit holder, came out and engaged in gunfire in the parking lot," La Sata said. "The manager fled back inside the building, being chased by the gunman. Another Schlenker employee, who also had concealed weapons permit, engaged in gunfire with the suspect."

Police said the suspect in the homicide is Robert Lorenzo Bailey Jr., 28, of Cocoa. He was shot twice and was in critical condition at Health First's Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. Officers are keeping him under watch.

"If not for the brave, quick thinking of the employees at Schlenker, this could have been a lot worse," La Sata said. "Mr. Bailey had multiple magazines on his person. He was intent on doing harm. The employees stepped up."

In the parking lot, longtime Schlenker employee Roger Lee Smith, 50, had been shot and killed by the suspect, police said. Smith had stepped out into the parking lot after he heard the shot that paralyzed his 25-year-old co-worker, La Sata said.

The paralyzed employee's name was not released Saturday morning.

Detectives are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting. La Sata said no connection could be drawn between Bailey and the business.

    This story will be updated.
