    Wellford shooting death ruled self-defense

    http://www.goupstate.com/news/201711...d-self-defense
A Wellford man who shot and killed another man Tuesday night did so in an act of self-defense, the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

Deputies responded to a shooting call at 9:25 p.m. Tuesday at 2949 Nazareth Road. They found Cody Lawrence, 28, of 146 Cannon Road, Wellford, at the scene with serious stab wounds in his abdomen area.

Lawrence told deputies he had been stabbed by his uncle, 44-year-old Bryan Paul Blackwell, of 113 Walker Road, Landrum, and that he had shot Blackwell in self-defense, Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Kevin Bobo said in an email.

Investigators believe the altercation occurred when Blackwell became upset because he didn’t want his mother to move to North Carolina because of her health, Bobo stated.

Lawrence’s mother was cut on the hand by Blackwell when she tried to get the knife away from him, Bobo stated.

Five witnesses supported Lawrence’s account of the incident, a report states.

Investigators presented the case to the 7th Circuit Solicitor’s Office on Thursday afternoon. After their review, the office determined Lawrence acted in self-defense, and no criminal charges will be filed against him, Bobo stated.

Lawrence is still recovering from his injuries at an area hospital, Bobo stated.

CVS shooter explains actions as self-defense to Davie PD

    http://wsvn.com/news/local/cvs-shoot...e-to-davie-pd/
DAVIE, FLA. (WSVN) - New details have been released of a CVS shooting that killed one person, and the shooter who said he had no choice but to fire.

Officials have released more information on the deadly shooting that took place inside the CVS pharmacy, Wednesday afternoon, near Griffin Road and University Drive.

“Mr. Berry was able to separate himself, push Smith away from him, physically push him away,” said Davie Police Capt. Dale Engle. “He’s able to retrieve a gun he has on him, and he fires several rounds, striking Smith. Smith ultimately succumbs to his injuries.”

They said the altercation started over a Craigslist cellphone sale transaction.

Davie Police said the incident originated inside the CVS parking lot and then ended up inside the store.

Thirty-seven-year-old Matthew Berry, police said, opened fire inside the CVS, killing 20-year-old Andre Smith. Berry arrived on scene to purchase a iPhone 7 from Smith, and at some point during the transaction, he told police that he didn’t feel comfortable and fled inside the store and asked an employee to call 911.

According to police, Smith chased Berry inside the store and the altercation escalated.

“Surveillance video clearly shows that Mr. Berry enters the store and that Mr. Smith is right behind him. It looks like Mr. Berry is attempting to get away from Smith,” Engle said. “As he entered the store, he requested the employees at CVS to contact 911.”

Berry, who has a concealed weapons license, pulled out his weapon and then shot at Smith, police said.

“As they arrived, a gentleman came out with his hands behind his head and he hit the ground,” said witness David Rodriguez.

    Smith died at the hospital.

No charges have been filed. This incident is still under investigation.

Police said this is a reminder to be careful when purchasing items on Craigslist. Officials said the transaction can be done at a police station.

Fed up, homeowner shoots alleged robber who later dies

    http://www.ksla.com/story/36751841/h...ing-to-rob-him
    MILLER COUNTY, AR (KSLA) -
The man who was shot in a Southwest Arkansas residence has died.
The 81-year-old who owns the home where the shooting occurred says the man had a gun and was trying to rob him.

"Whoever got the biggest gun and fastest will be boss when it is all said and done. ... In this case, it was me."

And Buddy Cates says he has been robbed a half dozen times in the past 10 months.

A Sheriff's Office spokesman has confirmed for KSLA News 12 that deputies have responded to multiple calls to his home.

The shooting happened about 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Cates' residence on Genoa Road (Arkansas Highway 196) at Miller County Road 290 in Genoa.

That's about a quarter mile west of Genoa Grocery.

The wounded man was taken to a Texarkana hospital, where he later died. Authorities have yet to release his name.

"I walked outside the door, and he was standing right there with a big pistol," Cates recalled. "I had my hand in my pocket on my pistol, and the battle was on."

Authorities say multiple shots were fired.

Cates estimates that he and the other man each fired their guns six to eight times.

Detectives recovered two guns at the scene of the shooting.

The homeowner has been interviewed by Miller County sheriff's detectives.

    No charge has been filed.

Authorities urge anyone with any information about the shooting to call the Sheriff’s Office at (870) 774-3001 or Crime Stoppers of Texarkana at (870) 793-7867.

Man draws gun inside South Omaha business, is shot by a witness, police say

    http://www.ketv.com/article/south-om...pital/13139197
A man walked into a South Omaha business and showed a gun early Thursday morning, police said in a report. An employee of the store then pulled out a gun and shot the man inside the Crystal Beverage Mart off 20th and M streets.

Officers said the witness held Juan Armand, 33, at gunpoint until police arrived.

Armand was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Police said he is expected to survive.

Omaha Police are investigating the incident as a robbery. Officers say Armand will be charged as soon as he is released from the hospital.

Neighbors in the area who woke up to the news said the situation was scary.

Imelda Santacruz, who lives a couple doors down from the liquor store, said if the man was truly trying to rob the store, then he got what he deserved.

"Don't try to get easy money by going into banks and stores and stealing and everything because you can get harmed, that's the way I see it," Santacruz said.

Armand has a lengthy criminal history. He was released in March after serving two years for theft by receiving.

The 33-year-old has also served time for DUI, graffiti, property damage and obstructing an officer or firefighter convictions.

Woman Defends Self, Property Against Robber

    http://www.mountain-news.com/news/cr...3f92deaef.html
A residential robber is on the run, after being shot with a BB gun by a female, home alone and acting in self defense.
According to a report from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, it was nearly 11 p.m. Sunday night when Puddin’, a heeler, began to bark. The resident of a home in the 900 block of Hillcrest Drive in Crestline saw a dark object pass by the lights outside her front door.
In fear, she grabbed her gas-powered BB gun from her bedroom. When she walked back into the living room, she noticed that the top lock on her front door was being opened from the outside.

She approached the front door and an unknown suspect, wearing a black ski mask and black gloves, shoved the door inward, striking the victim in the face, which made her dizzy.
The report described how the suspect pushed a large hunting knife through the opening and told the victim not to move, and to open the door because he had a knife.
The victim said she discharged at least four rounds at the suspect. One round hit him in the cheek of his face, and one or more other rounds hit him in the torso.
The suspect screamed and backed away. That allowed the victim to slam the door shut and lock it. She saw the male run up her stairs and away from her residence in an unknown direction.
When the victim was able to call 9-1-1, she said she needed medical attention. She had a hard time talking and said she felt like she was passing out. She persisted nonetheless, providing information to the dispatcher.

Because the male subject was wearing a black ski mask, she couldn’t see any of his hair, and couldn’t see any skin other than around his eyes.
In addition to the ski mask, the victim was able to see that her assailant was wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans and Converse shoes. He had a large build, she said, adding that he was a little overweight. He smelled like beer.

The unknown male had a deep voice and no particular accent. But he sounded funny, she said, “like he was getting sober, like the morning after when you try to talk and it sounds funny.” His voice was not familiar to her, the victim said, but he sounded “older,” perhaps between 30 and 50 years old.
The victim described her locks and keys, after which she reported that she was on the floor, dizzy and seeing spots.
Deputies responded and reported that an area check was negative for any suspects. Medical services arrived. As Oct. 28 transitioned into Oct. 29, at around midnight the victim was transported to St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino per her request.

It's a shame that most non police citizens of New Jersey do not have the same ability to protect themselves as this off duty cop and the officers mentioned at the end of the article. There is obviously a need for self defense in Jersey.

Pair pulled guns on off-duty cop before he killed them, authorities say

    http://www.nj.com/essex/index.ssf/20...ng_newark.html
NEWARK -- Authorities say the off-duty Jersey City police officer who shot and killed two men Sunday night was in Newark with a friend when the duo attempted to rob him at gunpoint.

At about 11:30 p.m., the officer was in the 100 block of South 6th Street in Newark dropping off an acquaintance and two children when he was approached by the two armed men, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino said in a release Monday.

One of the men apparently tried to shoot at the officer but his gun jammed, the prosecutor's office said.

The officer shot both men -- identified as Dante Holden, 19, of and Tymyr Wilson, 21, both of East Orange -- and both were pronounced dead at the scene, Laurino said.

Officials declined to identify the officer involved.

A spokeswoman for Jersey City Monday issued a statement on the incident.

"We are thankful that our detective, who was a victim of an attempted armed robbery, is OK and want to thank the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor for their assistance in this ongoing investigation," said city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill.

She declined to answer any additional questions about the officer.

In keeping with Attorney General guidelines, details of the investigation into the incident will be presented to an Essex County grand jury.

The shooting is the latest of several similar incidents in the city. Last month, a corrections officer fired his gun while confronting a man allegedly attempting to break into the officer's parked car. In November 2016, a retired NYPD detective shot two men who allegedly tried to mug her. Last month, a Newark police officer shot a carjacking suspect after a chase with an allegedly stolen BMW. None of those shootings were fatal, but several police shootings in Newark this year have been.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to call the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Professional Standards Bureau at 862-520-3700.

Police identify man accused in armed robbery of armored car at Wawa

    http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/...103-story.html
30-year-old Orlando man faces charges of armed robbery, grand theft and aggravated battery with a weapon as he heals from a gunshot wound officials say he suffered in the crime.

Elrod Morris Curry was named Friday in an arrest affidavit as the suspect in the incident that happened Thursday at a Wawa at 4700 South Goldenrod Road in southeast Orlando.

Curry is accused of trying to rob a Loomis cash-handling company employee working at an ATM machine just before 4 p.m., according to the Orlando Police Department.

Curry had been watching the employee — identified Friday as Loomis Security Officer Carlos Freijo — from the Wawa fountain drink machine as Freijo opened the ATM, according to the affidavit.

Freijo was stocking the machine with more than $5,000 in cash when Curry approached him from behind and squirted him in the face with pepper spray, according to the affidavit.

“[Freijo] was temporarily shocked, in pain, and immobilized,” the affidavit said.

But before Curry could make it away with any cash, Freijo drew his gun and shot Curry in the shoulder. The accused robber then fell to the ground, according to the report.

Freijo then called 911 and kept pointing the gun at Curry so he would not escape before police arrived, according to the report.

Medics took Curry to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment of the gunshot wound. He is expected to survive his injuries.

Friejo was taken to Florida Hospital East to recover from minor injuries.

Curry was booked into the Orange County Jail about 8:40 p.m. Thursday without bond, according to the jail website.

A lot of stories of people having to defend themselves or be defended at work lately. Sucks that so many companies want their employees to be sitting ducks.
