    Homeowner detains burglar for deputies

TUPELO – A Verona man is behind bars after trying to break into a car on Palmetto Road Monday morning.

According to Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson, deputies responded around 11 a.m. to Palmetto Road where the homeowner was holding a car burglar at gunpoint. Deputies found the suspect laying facedown in the yard.

The suspect, Zack Westbrook, initially told officers that he was 16, so he was carried to the Lee County Youth Detention Center. When it was later learned that Westbrook is 20, he was transferred to the adult jail and charged with burglary of a vehicle and giving false information.

Westbrook has a prior history of burglary. The homeowner was not injured.

Police: Assailant killed by couple in self defense in Rich County shooting

One person is dead and two people were injured Sunday afternoon in Rich County in a shooting that apparently involved a suicidal man — but investigators say the man did not die of his own hand.

According to a press release issued Monday evening, the Rich County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area after receiving reports of a suicidal man who was shooting into a home in Garden City.

On arrival, one man was found dead inside a vehicle that had crashed into the side of a trailer home. An elderly couple was found inside the home, both with gunshot wounds.

“During the attack, gunfire was exchanged and it is believed that is when the suspect was shot and killed,” stated a Department of Public Safety spokeswoman. “A preliminary investigation shows the elderly couple shot back at the suspect as a manner of self-defense.”

Investigators are still working to determine why the man was allegedly targeting the elderly couple, who are both expected to recover from their injuries.

Part of the incident played out on social media, although not in a manner that clearly predicted what was to come. Beginning at 11:47 a.m., 53-year-old Rick Bywater posted the first of three rants on his Facebook page.

Part of that first post Sunday states: “Thanks to all my supporters and those that oppose me can kiss my ass, family or not. (Slightly Smiling Face emoji):] live prosper and good luck.to all in the future, I dd the best i could with what i had to work with, signing off.”

During the next hour, there were two more posts and a number of responses to commenters. He expressed an intense displeasure with specific people, including one of the two victims and a law enforcement officer.

At 12:39 p.m. Bywater addressed one person by name, saying “you pushed me to the edge.”

During this time, there were many responses to his posts, first with his friends reaching out to support him, and later, as the news spread, expressing their sorrow and disbelief.

“You are a good man Rick and it is my pleasure to call you my friend. Don’t get down on yourself sorry you are having a bad day. You deserve much better.”

“You alright bud? Better days are coming!! Hit me up if you wanna talk!”

“Rick , you are a good friend, and have always been there for anyone who needs a helping hand, sounds like you could use one now, and we’re here!!”

“We’re sorry you’re going through a rough patch right now Rick. If there’s anything (we) can do let us know.”

What appears to be his last comment was posted in reply at 12:44 p.m. — he simply stated he was not going to make it.

The comments kept pouring in throughout the afternoon. There was “Please rick don’t do anything foolish. You are loved by to many people,” posted at about 2:26 p.m. And then, an hour later, another person posted the news: “He shot mike and Kay and then himself.”

That last statement now appears to be incorrect, according to information received Monday evening.

According to Garden City resident Bobbie Correy, the victims are Kay Carnahan, Sweetwater Trailer Park HOA President, and her husband, Mike.

Cache County Attorney’s Office Victims Services issued a statement late Sunday on behalf of the family:

“We would like to thank our friends and community for their outpouring of love and support at this difficult time. The victims are being cared for and currently recovering.”

Family members also expressed their thanks to law enforcement and emergency responders who assisted in the aftermath of the shooting.

The shooting reportedly took place in the Sweetwater trailer park just before 1 p.m.

According to scanner traffic, police were dispatched to the area after receiving reports of a man walking through the trailer park. He allegedly fired the gun into a neighbor’s home and walked down the road shooting at other homes.

The incident was initially paged out as an active shooter incident, but a Rich County officer was later heard telling another investigator that it wasn’t what he originally said it was.

Tables turned on ‘shooting victim’ in Forest Hill attack

September 26, 2017 Tremaine van Aardt
Three men who claimed to be victims of a random shooting incident were actually attempting to attack a woodcutter in Forest Hill when they were shot at – something conveniently omitted when a complaint was laid – police said yesterday.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the attempted attack on the woodcutter took place at about 4pm on Saturday.

The 42-year-old man was cutting wood in the bushes when he was accosted by three men, one of whom rushed at him with a knife.

The man started to run and fired a warning shot, Naidu said. However, the suspects continued to chase the man, who fired more shots as he fled.

Naidu said nothing was stolen but the woodcutter opened a case of attempted robbery at Humewood Police Station.

At about 5pm on the same day a man laid an attempted murder complaint on behalf of his brother at the Walmer Police Station.

“According to police information, the brother of the person who was shot [in the stomach] alleged that they were shot at by an unknown person in Walmer location.

“Detectives at SAPS Humewood immediately followed up on the case in Walmer and it was established that no gunshots were heard or fired in the vicinity of Walmer, as claimed by the complainant.”

Naidu said that on further investigation it was established that the men had been lying.

“The person who was shot was the person who attempted to attack the 42-yearold in Forest Hill,” she said.

Police arrested the three suspects, aged between 24 and 26, and opened a case of attempted robbery against them.

“A charge of perjury will be added to the [charges against the] suspect who attempted to open the case of attempted murder at the Walmer Police Station.”

On Saturday night, a 62-year-old man was beaten to death with a hammer and his friend severely injured, also in Forest Hill.

Burglar armed with knife confronted by homeowner... armed with a crossbow

A burglar who crept into a man’s house armed with a knife found himself slightly outgunned when the person living there pointed a crossbow at him.

David Jackson, 51, found Clint Clarke hiding in his kitchen after his partner, Patricia Robinson, awoke and saw a man running out of her bedroom.

Clarke eventually dropped the knife, which he had grabbed in response to seeing the crossbow, and was handed over to police officers called to the house, in the Norris Green area.

The 39-year-old, of Dewsbury Road in Anfield , was due to stand trial for aggravated burglary at Liverpool Crown Court today but changed his plea to guilty at the last moment.

Ms Robinson, 57, a shop assistant who works permanent night shifts, was sleeping upstairs while Mr Jackson was dozing in a living room chair when Clarke broke in on the afternoon of April 23.

Edmund Haygarth, prosecuting, told the court: “Patricia Robinson was awoken by the defendant who was in her bedroom. She saw the defendant quickly leave and run downstairs.

“David Jackson was awoken by a loud thumping noise. Shortly after Ms Robinson entered the room and told him what had happened upstairs.”

Mr Haygarth said the couple checked the upstairs of the property, but could not see anyone there.

He said: “Mr Jackson armed himself with a crossbow that he owned. He entered the kitchen, where the defendant was crouching down behind a box.

“He jumped up and Mr Jackson saw a large kitchen knife, which had been taken from a knife block, in the defendant’s hand.

“Effectively the situation therefore was a stand off between the defendant armed with a knife and Mr Jackson armed with the crossbow.”

The court heard Clarke quickly changed his mind and dropped the knife, telling Mr Jackson: “It’s not my fault, I’m homeless.”

Ms Robinson entered the room and the pair saw Clarke trying to hide her mobile phone between his legs.

Clarke, who has previous convictions including for assault, was arrested at the scene and tested positive for heroin.

It later emerged that he had entered the house through a kitchen window after removing a pane of glass.

Mr Haygarth heard that when he was searched by officers a “fearsome” looking push-knife was found in his waistband, which the court heard was carried due to fear of reprisals from drug-dealers he owed money to.

He said Ms Robinson had described having trouble sleeping after the incident.

Jason Smith, defending, told the court his client had only grabbed the knife out of fear after seeing the crossbow.

He said: “(Clarke) is 39-years-of age and he is utterly pathetic. He is a man ravaged by drug and alcohol abuse and he has now developed problems with his mental health...

“He wants to use the time he is in custody to clean himself up and deal with the issues he faces and clearly receive some form of mental help and live a life he has been unable to for many many years.”

Mr Smith said Clarke, who has hepatitis C, had been treated in hospital for mental health issues in the past but had yet to receive a formal diagnosis.

The judge, Recorder Peter Atherton, said he did not feel comfortable passing sentence without a psychiatric assessment.

He adjourned sentencing until November 3 for pre-sentence and psychiatric reports to be prepared.

DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - Police have arrested a man after a man called 911 saying he'd just fired at someone who'd broken into his home.

The man told the 911 dispatcher he was asleep when he heard someone knock at his door. He says he didn't get up immediately to answer it because it was so late. He says as he was getting up to see who was at the door, he heard two "booms" and he grabbed his gun.

The man, who says he had just moved into his home on Anna Street in Dayton, is a licensed CCW holder. He told the dispatcher he heard another boom and then realized someone was in his house, ""I'm sitting on top of my bed, I've got my gun out and I'm aiming toward, you know what I'm saying, where they was gonna be coming into," he said. He said the suspects opened the bedroom door and were using a cellphone as a flashlight, and he pulled his trigger.

"I tried to get 'em, seriously," the man told the dispatcher. He says after he started firing the suspects ran and dropped a cellphone. The man called 911 around 4:30 a.m. this morning, September 26.

Woman will not be charged in fatal 'stand your ground' shooting

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WEAR) — A deadly shooting in Myrtle Grove has been ruled justified by Florida's 'stand your ground' law.
The State Attorney's Office said Ollie Plunkett acted in self-defense in the shooting death of Deanna Stevison and no charges will be filed.
The shooting happened back on June 8 at Fairfield Village Apartments.

Plunkett told investigators she was sleeping and was woken up by a banging on the front door early that morning. Plunkett told Escambia County Sheriff's Office deputies that her daughter opened the door and Stevison forced her way into the home.

The State Attorney's Office said Stevison attacked the daughter and then turned on Plunkett when she tried to intervene.
Plunkett said she tried to call 911, but Stevison took her phone from her and threw it.
Plunkett told deputies she grabbed a Glock .40 caliber handgun from the television stand and shot at Stevison after she began choking her daughter.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they said Stevison had two gunshot wounds; one to her right hip and another to her upper right back. She was also unresponsive.
Plunkett told authorities Stevison was "beating on everybody and was going to kill us."

Three days before the incident, Plunkett's daughter's girlfriend received a text message from Stevison stating that "every day, I think of ways to kill Amy [Plunkett's daughter] and get away with it."
A crime scene investigator took photographs of Plunkett's daughter and documented multiple injuries, including redness and abrasions to her neck and the left side of her face and chin.

Hero in Tennessee church shooting proves guns could reduce crime, expert says

Robert Caleb Engle, 22, did what few would under the circumstances. Though unarmed, he confronted a gunman who randomly opened fire during Sunday services at Nashville's Burnette Chapel Church of Christ.

As the two struggled, the gunman pistol-whipped Engle, then wounded himself in the chest, giving time for Engle, who has a right to carry permit, to run outside and fetch his own weapon.

He came back to hold the suspect at bay, potentially sparing further carnage.

"What if he had pulled the trigger?" Engle's father, James, later told a reporter. "Because he had the gun pointed at him. I'm proud of him."

It is unclear whether the suspect, 25-year-old Emanuel Kidega Samson, was a legal gun owner. He was troubled, a refugee from Sudan’s civil war in the mid-1990's in which two million were killed, and during which some 40,000 boys, the so-called "Lost Boys" of Sudan, were abandoned or orphaned, and who were forced to trek over 100 miles to escape almost certain death.

Last June, Samson reportedly texted his father "... I have a gun to my head, have a nice F------ life."

About 16.4 million Americans, like Engle, have the right to carry firearms publicly. John Lott, author of "More Guns, Less Crime," says that fact contributes to lower crime rates.

    robert caleb engle
Robert Caleb Engle, 22, struggled with the gunman, and when the shooter was injured, he ran outside to fetch his own weapon.
"The states that have had the biggest increase in concealed carry permits have had the biggest relative drops in violent crime and murder,” Lott told Fox News. "For each additional percent increase that you have in concealed carry permits, you have about 1 half percent drop in murder rates."

But not everyone agrees with Lott.

A 2004 National Academy of Sciences study found “no credible evidence that the passage of right-to-carry laws decreases or increases violent crime."

A more recent paper by Stanford University Law Professor John Donohue finds concealed carry, "substantially elevates violent crime rates, but seems to have no impact on property crime and murder rates."

"It does seem to be the case that if you allow anyone to carry a concealed weapon, you're going to pay a higher price for increased violent crime," Donohue told Fox News.

While that debate continues, in Congress momentum is building for the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. It has 212 co-sponsors in the House and would allow an eligible person to carry a concealed handgun in any state where it’s legal.
