Not a gun, but she was armed and made a difference, and did what it took to protect herself.

This is the type of scenario that I suspect happens often, but never gets reported. People being attacked, they pull out a gun, and the criminals running away.

Aside from cars, few inanimate objects seem to be so widely discussed as guns, and four incidents in the Washington area last week helped suggest the pervasiveness of firearms and, in one case, their possible usefulness.

The incident that appeared to demonstrate the utility of a firearm occurred Sept. 3 in Prince William County.

According to the police, two Manassas residents, a man, 38, and a woman, 34, were assaulted there by three men whom they knew.

The attack, in the 8400 block of Stoney Lane, came in the course of an argument, and it apparently ended, according to the police account, when one of the two assault victims showed a gun.

A police statement said a victim “brandished a firearm in self-defense and the suspects fled.”

    Police reported three arrests.

Homeowner shoots, kills man breaking into home

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM)- The Lower Paxton Township Police Department is investigating a deadly home invasion after the homeowner shot and killed the suspect early Sunday morning.

Police say they received a 911 hang up call at 6:00 a.m. from the 2000 block of Fairway Lane.

The caller reported that a man was trying to kill him. While en route to the call, police were updated that another 911 call was received stating the suspect was beating a man with a baseball bat in the driveway of the residence.

Several minutes later there was a report of a man attempting to break into another residence several houses away from the original call.

Police say the suspect reportedly forced his way into the residence with a baseball bat and was met by the homeowner who shot him.

Officers found the suspect inside the second residence with a gun shot wound to the abdomen. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

His identity is not known at this time.

When officers arrived at the residence of the first call, an elderly female assault victim was found in the driveway. She was transported to the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center with head trauma.

It is unknown at this time how the elderly woman was assaulted but it is believed that a domestic dispute took place between a resident of the home and the deceased man.

Police do not beleive there is a threat to the public in this area.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Lower Paxton Township Police Department at 717-657-5656 and request Sergeant Taylor or Corporal Witmer or submit a tip via this website.

Homeowner shoots at burglary suspects in southwest Shreveport

A homeowner shot at a pair of burglary suspects who were running from police in a southwest Shreveport neighborhood just before noon Monday.

The man missed -- and the suspects kept running -- but police rounded them up just before 1 p.m. on Burson Street off Mansfield Road.

Community liaison officers with the Shreveport Police Department were already in the area investigating four previous burglaries in which family pets were killed or injured. Those break-ins happened in the Southern Hills neighborhood.

When the department got a call about a burglary in progress in the 3000 block of Burson, the officers rushed to that location, said Cpl. Angie Willhite, a police department spokeswoman.

Willhite said the suspects in Monday's burglary kicked in the front door the house on Burson and entered it armed with guns.

No one was injured in the incident.

Willhite said police don't know if Monday's break-in and the previous burglaries are connected.

Police are reviewing surveillance video provided by Southern Hills residents, but Willhite said police hope people will provide more video or other information about the suspects in the four previous break-ins.

"If you know who's committing these burglaries, we'd love for you to pass it along," Willhite said. "You can do it anonymously."

Neighbors recount frightening shooting at nearby store

LAS VEGAS - One man is dead and two others are in jail after allegedly trying to rob a convenience store overnight. Metro
says it was a store clerk who fired the fatal shots.

It happened near Vegas Valley Drive and Mountain Vista Street.

Drug deals and fights. That's just a small sample of what some who live in the neighborhood say happens frequently in the 7-Eleven parking lot.

But what happened last night they'd never seen before. By morning, the cleanup was almost over and the 7-Eleven was about to return to normal.

"It was really bad last night," said Sylvia Salazar, witness. "We hardly had any sleep."

Salazar and her family aren't quite ready yet.

    "It was really bad."

It was around midnight when Salazar and her two children got home, but instead of going inside they stayed right where they were.

"As soon as we drove up," said witness Alfonso Avina. "We heard something at the 7-Eleven."

Across the street, a spark of violence.

"My daughter said, 'mom, stay in the car, don't get out.'" Salazar said.

"Then we started hearing gunshots right away and there was a couple people outside," Avina said.

"I saw him try to hide and I saw him pulling out a gun and I closed my eyes because I knew he's going to shoot him. Next thing I know, he's on the floor not moving," Salazar said.

What Salazar and others nearby witnessed was an attempted robbery, and an apparent fight back. Metro Police say three men went into the 7-Eleven, confronted the clerks, left, then came back.

"And there was a guy with a blade. A knife i guess," Avina said.

In the commotion, detectives say one of the employees shot an intruder twice, killing him.

"I think it's like the Fourth of July," said witness Olga Bierbrasanta.

    She lives across the street.

"Some more screaming and saying 'Help, help!'"

Two other suspects were arrested. Eighteen-year-old Eric Ball and 20-year-old Richard Ball face several charges.

The clerk who pulled the trigger has not been arrested. The district attorney will determine if charges are warranted.

Salazar isn't sure if she can get what she saw last night out of her mind.

"From seeing him running to seeing him on the floor, it was very devastating. I feel sick in my stomach still." ))

Metro is still investigating, and says surveillance video from the store will be crucial to the case.

According to Metro, staff at stores are allowed to be armed. It is up to their management.

7-Eleven staff and management declined to do an interview.

Albany County SO Investigates Fatal Shooting as Self-Defense

The Albany County Sheriff’s office has released information regarding a deadly shooting on Pole Mountain, Saturday. Officials say the case is being investigated as a self-defense shooting by a man who was open-carrying a gun.

According the the ACSO Sheriff’s Office, on September 9, 2017, at approximately 1:22 pm, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a shooting on Forest Service road 701 on Pole Mountain.

The Laramie Fire Department, Wyoming Highway Patrol and Wyoming State Parks Police responded to the area, along with Albany County Deputies.

Sheriff’s officials say that the shooter was Brice Page, age 27, and the deceased subject as Matthew Butrick, age 43. Both subjects are Laramie County residents.

Investigators believe that at approximately 1300 hours, Page was traveling on Forest service road 701 and observed a multicolored Dodge truck that appeared to be chasing two subjects riding ATVs. Page observed the truck to run the ATV’s off the road along a group of trees.

Butrick reportedly exited the Dodge truck and began to assault one of the subjects on the ATV. An ACSO statement released on Tuesday says the riders of the ATVs were determined to be 15 years old.

As Page and his family approached the scene, it is said that he yelled at Butrick to. Butrick allegedly then turned his focus to Page and threatened to assault him.

While Page was waiting for everyone to leave, witnesses report Butrick got into his vehicle, turned around and drove over to Pages vehicle. Butrick then is said to have exited his truck and approached Page on foot.

It was reported that Butrick’s approach was aggressive and he was not speaking. Page said he began retreating backwards ordering Butrick to stay back multiple times. However, Butrick continued to advance on Page.

Page is believed to have drawn a firearm from an open carry holster and pointed it at Butrick, and ordered Butrick to stay back or he would shoot. Butrick continued to advance towards Page. After retreating backwards approximately 20 feet Page is believed to have fired his weapon, fatally wounding Butrick. The distance between the two subjects at the time the shot was fired was approximately three feet.

According to the NCSO, the case is being investigated as self-defense, and the County Attorney’s Office will be reviewing the case to determine if any charges will be filed.
