Cops: West Side homeowner wounds backyard intruder

An East Garfield Park homeowner shot and wounded an intruder at his West Side home early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The alleged intruder, who remained hospitalized Tuesday afternoon, was later charged with misdemeanors connected to the 5 a.m. incident in the 2900 block of West Walnut Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, according to police.

The 54-year-old homeowner told police he discovered the unknown man in his locked backyard and verbally instructed the man to leave, according to a police spokeswoman. But the intruder allegedly “balled up his fist” and approached the homeowner, who, fearing an attack, opened fire with a 9mm handgun, striking the intruder in the upper left thigh, police said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai where he was listed in good condition. The 49-year-old was later charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass to real property and simple assault, police said. It’s unclear if the wounded man made a statement to investigators, but the spokeswoman considered the incident a case of trespassing or a possible burglary.

The homeowner, who had a valid Firearms Owners Identification Card and concealed carry permit, was questioned by police, but later released without charges because the shooting appeared to be self-defense.

Under state law, a legal gun owner may fire their weapon if they “reasonably believe” they’re subject to an imminent deadly attack by another person.

The homeowner couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday evening.

Wilmington, Illinois Residents Told To Stay Inside During Manhunt
    Riley O'NeilAugust 21, 2019

Wilmington (population 5,724), in Will County, is approximately 60 miles southwest from downtown Chicago.

Authorities said multiple agencies are conducting an active manhunt for the suspect in the Northcrest area of Wilmington, that started around 4am Wednesday.

It all started when just before midnight, an armed carjacking occurred in Calumet City. The vehicle was spotted by Dolton police around 1am Wednesday, which instigated a police chase that eventually stretched about 30 miles to Wilmington.

The two suspects ventured onto Interstate 57, and before long, Illinois State Police and other agencies joined in the pursuit. Police said the offenders were traveling over 100 miles an hour at times.

    WGN News:

The pursuit ended after the two offenders crashed through a fence in a subdivision. The two then fled on foot.

A homeowner, who wants to remain anonymous, confronted one of suspects who came into his home.

The homeowner said his dog alerted him of a possible intruder, so he grabbed his gun and called out, "if someone is inside the house leave now." The suspect allegedly yelled back at the man, and said, "I'm not leaving!"

That's when the homeowner fired one shot at the suspect. The suspect then allegedly told the homeowner "I don't want to die tonight," and left out the back door.

Police were able to capture the suspect soon after that encounter. The other suspect remains at large.

Residents in the area have been asked to stay in their homes as police conduct the search, and all Wilmington schools are on a delayed start

Home invasion suspects tied to armed carjacking of teacher, police say

GWINETT COUNTY, Ga. - Channel 2 Action News has confirmed that three crimes stretching at least 40 miles are all connected.

Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes first reported on Monday that someone carjacked a teacher outside Heritage Elementary School in south Fulton County.

Then there was home invasion and shooting overnight on Terrace Court in Peachtree Corners.

    Content Continues Below
It ended when a victim from that shooting called for help on Bolton Road in northwest Atlanta early Tuesday morning. Police say he was in the car stolen in the carjacking.

When the two teens suspects tried to commit a home invasion in Peachtree Corners, things didn’t go as planned, according to officers.

Gwinnett County police say someone inside the apartment shot one of the teens before they could steal anything.

Police say the suspects left the apartments before officers arrived. That when investigators said they headed to Atlanta to a home on Bolton Road.

Someone there called police and said a teenager was shot in the arm and stomach.

When Atlanta police got to the house, they said the teen wouldn’t tell them who shot him or what happened. But he did tell police he was riding in a white Dodge Challenger.

Police figured out the car is the same white Challenger someone took from a teacher at gunpoint at Heritage Elementary on Monday.

Fulton County Schools Director of Safety Shannon Flounnory said the carjacking had nothing to do with someone targeting Heritage Elementary, that it was a thief who came to the school’s neighborhood looking to get rid of a stolen car he was already driving.

“We don’t feel that anyone else is in danger at this particular point. This was a crime of opportunity,” Flounnory said.

Now, school police are trying to connect the dots and figure out if any of the teen suspects carjacked the teacher.

Parents are eager to find out.

"That could've been me coming in the morning. It's scary," parent Savion Thomas said.

Shooting results in death of a Mississippi man. Sheriff said it's most likely self-defense

A man was shot to death Sunday night in Lamar County, but he may have been shot in self-defense, Sheriff Danny Rigel said.

Thirty-one-year-old Henry Johnson of Lumberton was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital, Coroner Cody Creel said.

The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. on Little Black Creek Road in Lumberton. A 911 call came in about a fight at the location. Another call came in soon after to report one of the suspects had been shot twice.

When deputies arrived, two people were performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on the shooting victim. One of them told deputies he was the person who shot Johnson.

After talking to witnesses and investigating the scene, Rigel said the shooting appears to have been in self-defense.

Rigel said several witnesses who saw the fight told deputies the victim was the aggressor. They said the fight started at one location. The shooter left the scene but the victim followed him to another location and continued the fight.

"(Johnson) kept beating up on him," Rigel said, adding there was a gun in the glovebox of the truck the shooter was in. "The guy came running at him and he told him to stop but he wouldn't so he shot him twice — and then performed CPR on him."

Rigel said once the investigation and autopsy is complete, the case will be turned over to the district attorney's office to be presented to a grand jury.

No charges have been filed at this time, Rigel said.

Police: Neighbors tackle incoherent Florida man after he throws brick through window

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Residents of a Lake Howard community held a man at gunpoint, before tackling him, after he threw a brick through a window of a neighbor’s home, Winter Haven police said.

Brandon Jo Patterson, 32, was arrested Monday. Authorities said neighbors saw Patterson, who appeared to be incoherent, walk up to a home on Lake Howard Drive in Winter Haven and hit a window with his belt.

A witness began banging on his own window in hopes of interrupting Patterson. Patterson then turned his attention on the neighbor and threw a brick into the window, shattering the glass, officers said.

The resident then grabbed his firearm as Patterson walked toward him, officers said. The resident fired one round in the direction of the broken window where Patterson was approaching, authorities said.

The shot did not hit Patterson.

The resident of the first home confronted Patterson, and both neighbors tackled him and held him down until police arrived, investigators said.

Police said Patterson was taken to Winter Haven Hospital to be medically evaluated.

“After being interviewed, it is still unclear why Patterson acted in the manner he did," a news release said.

Once Patterson was medically cleared, he was taken to the Polk County Jail on charges of throwing a deadly missile at building, attempted burglary of dwelling, burglary of an occupied structure and aggravated assault with deadly weapon.

Wow, I think this the first one I’ve posted that took place in Washington D.C

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/local...212_story.html

Legal gun owner fears robbery, shoots suspect at bus stop, D.C. police say
    Peter Hermann

A man with a permit to carry a firearm in the District shot and wounded someone he thought was about to rob him Tuesday afternoon at a bus stop in Northeast Washington, according to D.C. police.

Police said the wounded man and a second suspect have been charged with assault with intent to commit robbery. They were identified as Nigel Pulliam, 26, and Keith Lamont Blue, also 26. Both are from Southeast Washington.

Police did not identify which of the men had been shot.

The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. when police said two men approached the victim in the 500 block of H Street NE, blocked his path and made statements indicating a possible robbery.

An arrest affidavit filed in D.C. Superior Court says one of the men was armed with a handgun with an extended magazine, and the other man held his hand under his shirt as if he had a firearm.

The victim told police he tried to walk away but was again blocked by one of the men who said, “Don’t move,” the affidavit says.

Police said the intended victim “brandished his lawfully possessed firearm and shot at the suspect, striking him in the arm.” Police said they recovered 10 bullet casings.

A police report made public on Wednesday says the windows of four businesses on the H Street commercial strip were damaged — two restaurants, a clothing store and a cash express shop.

[Hundreds of people apply for gun permits as District’s rules ease]

Police said the man who fired his gun called 911.

In October 2017, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit struck down a key provision of the city law that had required residents to show a “good reason” to carry a firearm outside the home.

Since then, D.C. police said 4,448 people have applied for a conceal carry license, and 3,387 have been approved. Shootings involving a person with a legal gun in the District remain rare.

Police said they are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting to determine if it was justified.

The man who fired the gun could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

Correction: An earlier version of this story mistakenly said the man who fired had a gun with an extended magazine.

Armed woman stops burglary suspect long enough for deputies to catch up
LIBERTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A quick-thinking 47-year-old mother is being credited with keeping a burglary suspect from running. He showed up at her front door while allegedly fleeing from deputies.

It started on CR 6471 in Liberty County when Israel Martinez allegedly broke into a camper trailer around 7 a.m. Monday. A vigilant neighbor heard someone in the camper and called deputies.

Once they arrived, deputies say Martinez took off and ran.

Not long after, Dana Clover says she was awakened after hearing a knock at her door.

"We have no trespassing signs, so I'm always armed. I answered the door with my little pistol and there was a terrified-looking young man on the front porch," said Clover.

She says the man on her porch told her he was being chased by his girlfriend's dad and wanted her to call his grandmother.

"When he sat down on the front porch, I noticed he had gloves hanging out of his back pocket, and not many boyfriends take gloves to sneak in and see their girl," said Clover.

While he waited outside, Clover called the sheriff's office and, sure enough, Martinez fit the description of the burglar they were looking for.

"I had the door shut. I told him, 'I've been calling your grandma, just hang out.' And he laid down on the porch and I got my bigger gun out when I found out he was a bad guy and stood behind the screen door," she said.

Clover says she had her gun pointed in his direction just in case.

"He didn't know the shotgun was on him, thank goodness," she said.

Deputies arrived and Martinez was hauled off to jail. They say while he was running from deputies through the woods toward Clover's home, he dropped several stolen guns. They also recovered a gun they say he had on him at the time. He's charged with burglary and could face more charges.

"(Clover) played it very cool. She's to be commended for the way she handled the situation," said Capt. Ken DeFoor with the Liberty County Sheriff's Office.

"You've got to protect yourself, your family and your neighborhood. We're a community and we need to act like one and pull together, and in this case we did and I'm proud of us all," said Clover.

Argument at Lowe’s turns deadly, but no charges to be filed in shooting, SC cops say
    August 19, 2019 09:03 PM, Updated August 20, 2019 01:04 AM
Witnessing a crime and reporting it can be just as frightening as being the victim of a crime. Here’s what you should do if you witness illegal activity. By Nicole L. Cvetnic
An argument between two men turned deadly at a South Carolina Lowe’s Home Improvement store, the Spartanburg Police Department said Monday.

Although one man was fatally shot in Sunday’s confrontation, no charges will be filed against the gunman, police said in a news release.

Police said the shooter acted in self-defense.

The incident began as an argument between two men who knew each other, according to the news release. Police said it happened at the Lowe’s on Blackstock Road.

Officers responded to a reported shooting around 2:45 p.m. at the hardware superstore, where Randall Eugene Belk confronted Guy Edward Holler inside the Lowe’s before the incident turned violent in the parking lot, according to the news release.

Witnesses said the men were arguing, and Belk “challenged” Holler, who tried to get away from the situation by walking away from Belk and down a different aisle in the store, police said.

Belk left the store but did not leave the situation.

Police said Belk went to his truck and got a 4-foot-long piece of lumber and waited for Holler to leave the store.

When Holler returned to the parking lot, he headed toward his vehicle and Belk stalked him from behind with the wood, according to the news release.

Witnesses said Holler was in his car when Belk confronted him again and ignored pleas to back off, police said.

Belk was menacing Holler with the lumber and was four feet away when Holler fired a bullet and hit Belk in the upper body, according to the news release.

Belk was taken to an area hospital, where he died, police said.

Holler was taken to Spartanburg City Hall, where he was “interviewed and released” by police who conferred with the prosecutor’s office and determined he acted in self-defense, according to the release.

Police said no charges will be filed.

Information on what the men were arguing about and the nature of their relationship was not available.
