Sheriff's office: Intruder fatally shot by Hillsborough Co. homeowner

    http://www.wtsp.com/news/local/intru...fice/462138174
LAKELAND, Fla. -- An elderly couple was woken up by someone who broke into their home overnight, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. And now that intruder is dead.

It happened at a home in the 5400 block of Deeson Road in Lakeland. Deputies say the male homeowner shot the intruder, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The intruder has been identified as 33-year-old Shane DeShane. Police say DeShane lived at an address also on Deeson Road, just a few houses away from the couples' home.

Investigators gave no indication the couple and DeShane knew each other. Neighbors say DeShane moved in just a few weeks ago. They also say the couple kept to themselves and rarely left their home.

Citing the advice of their legal counsel, the couple would not speak to 10News on Saturday.

    This is an active investigation.

WingStop Employee Shoots, Wounds Robber During Foot Chase

    https://patch.com/texas/houston/wing...ing-foot-chase
HOUSTON, TX — A man who robbed a WingStop Restaurant in Houston’s Third Ward late Tuesday, was wounded in a brief gun battle with an armed employee.

Police said the robber came into the store in the 3700 block of Scott Street and demanded money.

Witnesses said the man, who was wearing a mask and wearing all black, came into the restaurant at about 11 p.m., and kept reaching for hs waistband, like he had a gun, KPRC reported.

Police said the WingStop employee handed over the cash, and when the robber ran out the store toward the Texas Southern University campus, the employee, who was armed, ran after him, igniting a brief gun battle, KTRK reported.

Police responding to the area found the robbery suspect wounded with a bullet in his leg, in an open area near Canfield Street, officials said.

He was taken to an area hospital and is expected to recover.

He will likely face charges for aggravated robbery.

Charges were not filed against the WingStop employee.

Nelson County man holds burglar at gunpoint with help of family dog

    http://www.wdrb.com/story/35806139/n...-of-family-dog
BLOOMFIELD, Ky. (WDRB) – An 18-year-old man is in jail after authorities say his plan to burglarize a Nelson County home was thwarted by a Basset Hound named Pig.

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 4:30 Saturday morning at a home on Goodloe Avenue in Bloomfield.

Chris Stevens and his wife Heather were asleep Saturday morning when their dog Pig began barking near the door to their 13-year-old daughter’s room.

“Usually she (Pig) doesn't just bark for any reason,” Chris Stevens said. “So my wife got up to go see what she was barking at.”

Stevens says once his wife was in the hallway to see what Pig was barking at, a man’s arm appeared to be coming from inside their daughter’s room trying to ‘shush’ the dog.

“Of course she screamed,” Stevens said of his wife. “I jumped up, grabbed my weapon. I walked right into his face; I mean literally, I was face to face with him.”

Stevens said once the person inside their home saw the gun, he immediately began to comply with commands. Luckily, the Steven’s daughters were in Chicago at the time visiting family.

“He went through her dresser drawers and ransacked a few things in there,” Stevens said.

Stevens held the suspect at gunpoint for around 20 minutes he said, before the Nelson County Sheriff’s office arrived to arrest the man.

18-year-old Garrett Harlan Inghram was arrested and charged with 2nd degree burglary. It’s believed that he entered the house through a window leading to the bedroom.

“He was dressed all in black,” Stevens described. “Black pants, black hoodie, black gloves, black backpack.”

But for Stevens, he said the real hero and the reason the situation didn’t escalate further was his dog Pig.

“If it wasn't for her, I don't know what would have happened, I truly don't,” he said.

What's all this "held at gunpoint" foolishness? Draw your weapon, put down the threat and save tax dollars. If you're justified to draw continue the motion and pull the trigger - ending the threat.

This is a story where an armed citizen successfully defended himself....... but Jersey. I think sums up how messed up NJ is. Basically a guy defended himself and was found to be justified of self defense. But because it's New Jersey where it is almost impossible to get the states permission to defend yourself, he was guilty of unlawful possession of a weapon. He will be out of jail in 1 year after parole on his mandatory 5 year sentence.

He was technically breaking New Jersey's laws because New Jersey puts itself above the Constitution and natural law to defend yourself. So be it, he broke the law but is here and healthy enough to talk about it.

Man gets 1 year in jail in fatal shooting -- because it was self-defense: attorney

    http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/2...g_a_robbe.html
JERSEY CITY -- The lawyer representing the last of two men sentenced on gun charges connected to a fatal shooting in Jersey City in 2015 said no one was charged in the killing because it was in self-defense during a robbery by the victim.

"My client (Aaron Lofton) and Lester Smith were at IHOP when the victim in the case (Tyreek McCord) walks up and puts a gun to Mr. Lofton's head and he asked for jewelry, money and his wallet," attorney James Lisa said today.

Lisa, who represented Lofton at his sentencing on Friday, continued saying, "Lester Smith drew a gun from inside the car they were in and shot Mr. McCord in defense of Mr. Lofton."

No one has been charged with McCord's homicide, which Lisa said was captured on video.

Lofton, who had pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a weapon, was sentenced to 364 days in Hudson County jail in Kearny on Friday in Jersey City by Hudson County Superior Court Judge Patrick Arre. He has about 90 more days to serve before being released, Lisa said.

Tyreek McCord died Nov. 21, 2015 after being shot multiple times outside the IHOP on Route 440 at about 4 a.m. He was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center by friends and pronounced dead, officials said at the time.

Lofton and Smith were charged with weapons offenses in connection to that incident.

Smith pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a handgun and was sentenced to five years in prison with no chance of parole until after serving one year.

Smith is serving that sentence concurrent to a five-year sentence for a June 2016 Middlesex County incident in which he was convicted of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and aggravated assault. His maximum release date is June 2020, state corrections records say.

Prior to being shot dead, McCord had recently been released from incarceration. Records indicate he was convicted of aggravated assault, theft, and receiving stolen property in 2014.

When McCord's mother was looking for assistance covering the funeral costs for her son through the federally funded Crime Victims Fund, she was denied financial help, she told The Jersey Journal in February last year.

The mother said she was told that her son was being investigated, possibly for robbery related to his fatal shooting, and that she would not have access to the funding. The mother was confounded by the fact no one was charged in her son's death.

An additional arrest was made outside McCord's funeral service. Yazmir Delbridge, 19, was charged with possession of a handgun following a traffic stop.

Man Shot, Killed at Bethlehem Home

    https://www.theintelligencer.net/new...-in-bethlehem/
BETHLEHEM – A homeowner shot and killed a man inside his Bethlehem home Wednesday afternoon, but police are releasing few additional details.

The shooting occurred at 157 Ridgecrest Road. Ohio County Assessor’s Office records show the house is owned by Leslie Jones.

Neighbors said police told them that someone inside the house shot an intruder during an apparent home invasion attempt. Wednesday. Troopers with the West Virginia State Police, which is handling the investigation, would not confirm those details.

A release from the state police’s Wheeling detachment late Wednesday identified the man killed as Steven Thomas Headley.

“The owner of the residence shot Steven Headley. Medical personnel transported Mr. Headley to the Ohio Valley Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead,” Trooper First Class C.W. Heckler said in the release. “At this time no arrests have been made and the investigation is still active.”

Police received report of the shooting at 2:19 p.m. At about 3 p.m., a man was removed from the residence and loaded into an ambulance, with medical personnel attempting to resuscitate him.

In addition to state police, the Bethlehem Police Department and Ohio County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

For several hours, investigators seemed to be in a holding pattern as they waited for a judge to sign a search warrant. They obtained the warrant at about 7 p.m., and police cleared the scene by about 8:30 p.m.

Neighbor Paul Johnson said he has lived next door at 163 Ridgecrest Road for about 15 years.

“I’ve never known him to have any problems with anybody,” Johnson said of Jones. “He pretty much stays to himself.”

Upon learning that his neighbor and longtime friend was apparently unharmed, Johnson said he was tremendously relieved.

“That was my biggest concern, that my buddy was all right,” he said. “It was good to hear that, but that’s all the information I got from him — he’s OK. But that was good enough.”

Johnson said the neighborhood has always been a peaceful one, and Wednesday’s events wouldn’t change his perception. He purchased his house from his parents – who he said were so comfortable with the neighborhood they would leave their doors unlocked.

“I’ve got a security system, a little self-defense. I’m not overly concerned,” Johnson said. “You never know why somebody breaks into a place. … Some people get desperate for money to buy (drugs), and it seems like they’re spreading everywhere to get money to buy them.”

Man investigates noise in house, holds burglary suspect at gunpoint

    http://www.theindychannel.com/news/c...ct-at-gunpoint
GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A Greenwood homeowner held a burglary suspect at gunpoint Wednesday morning after investigating a break-in at his house.

The break-in happened around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday when a woman and her husband woke up to the sound of glass breaking in their house in the 800 block of N. Madison Avenue.

The husband grabbed a gun and investigated the noise. He found a stranger in the spare bedroom.

The husband escorted the suspect out of the house and held him at gunpoint until police arrived. Police believe Thompson broke into the house by breaking out a window in the spare bedroom.

The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Kyler W. Thompson, told police he was swimming next door and his friend Robert ran to the victim's house, trying to break in.

Thompson said he was trying to stop Robert from entering the house.

The homeowner next door said she doesn't know Thompson, and he has no permission to be on her property. Police couldn't find anybody named Robert, as described by Thompson.

Thompson had an active arrest warrant out of Indianapolis for felon in possession of a firearm. He was taken to the Johnson County Jail.

This is an old one I found on the forum that Curmudgeon posted back in 2009. I try to keep to recent stories but this is an a example of a college student possibly preventing a mass killing and a rape. It is one that should be brought up in the college carry debate and an example of self defense that should not be forgotten.

    The original post. http://forum.pafoa.org/showthread.ph...ghlight=Rashad

College Student Shoots, Kills Home Invader

    http://atlanta.livejournal.com/3391402.html
COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- A group of college students said they are lucky to be alive and they’re thanking the quick-thinking of one of their own. Police said a fellow student shot and killed one of two masked me who burst into an apartment.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Jones met with one of the students to talk about the incident.
“Apparently, his intent was to rape and murder us all,” said student Charles Bailey.

Bailey said he thought it was the end of his life and the lives of the 10 people inside his apartment for a birthday party after two masked men with guns burst in through a patio door.

“They just came in and separated the men from the women and said, ‘Give me your wallets and cell phones,’” said George Williams of the College Park Police Department.
Bailey said the gunmen started counting bullets. “The other guy asked how many (bullets) he had. He said he had enough,” said Bailey.

That’s when one student grabbed a gun out of a backpack and shot at the invader who was watching the men. The gunman ran out of the apartment.

The student then ran to the room where the second gunman, identified by police as 23-year-old Calvin Lavant, was holding the women.

“Apparently the guy was getting ready to rape his girlfriend. So he told the girls to get down and he started shooting. The guy jumped out of the window,” said Bailey.
A neighbor heard the shots and heard someone running nearby.
“And I heard someone say, ‘Someone help me. Call the police. Somebody call the police,’” said a neighbor.
The neighbor said she believes it was Lavant, who was found dead near his apartment, only one building away.

Bailey said he is just thankful one student risked his life to keep others alive.
“I think all of us are really cognizant of the fact that we could have all been killed,” said Bailey.
One female student was shot several times during the crossfire. She is expected to make a full recovery.
Police said they are close to making the arrest of the second suspect.

So, we hear this continuing mantra that college students can't be trusted with guns on campus. Here's an example where a student defends himself and others, hits what he's aiming at AND plants one of the criminals. You'll note that the 'simple robbery' was going to devolve into a rape multiple homicide. The implied threats of the criminals AND their behavior pointed at a clear intent to do MORE than just take property under threat of deadly force. They were going to take liberties with the women and likely kill the rest.

The next time someone tells you that a student shouldn't be able to defend themselves on a campus circle back to THIS incident.

Suspected robber shot in gated apartment complex

    MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -
A suspected robber is in critical condition after being shot during a robbery inside a gated apartment complex.

The incident happened Tuesday morning, shortly after midnight, on North McLean Boulevard near Jefferson Avenue.

Kerry Petty, 49, tried to rob a woman of her laptop bag at her apartment complex, according to Memphis Police Department.

Police said the woman and Petty struggled over the laptop bag, and that's when the woman's boyfriend ran outside of his apartment and joined the fight.

A neighbor recalled hearing screams and a gunshot.

"It was really shocking to hear that. I was glad to hear that somebody came to help her out," neighbor Raquel Adam said.

When the police arrived, they found Petty on the ground injured with a gunshot wound.

Petty was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to non-critical and will likely be issued criminal charges soon, according to MPD.
