Law enforcement official shoots, kills attacker during Sunday worship
Fatal incident involved two members of a Church of Christ in rural Mississippi.

One man is dead after a Sunday morning shooting at a Church of Christ in rural northern Mississippi.

Keith Bullock, who serves as South Half Constable for Tippah County, was worshiping with the West Ripley Church of Christ in Ripley, Miss., when a man approached him and pulled a knife, Tippahnews.com reports. Bullock drew his own weapon and fired, killing the attacker.

    Ripley, MS, USA
Patrick Sanders, 57, of Dumas, Miss., was pronounced dead at the scene, the Daily Journal newspaper reports. Bullock was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The newspaper identified both Bullock and Sanders as members of the congregation, which meets about 90 miles southeast of Memphis, Tenn. The directory “Churches of Christ in the United States” lists the church’s Sunday attendance as 45.

The shooting happened at 11:27 a.m. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case.

Bullock’s cousin, Clint Stroupe, said he is praying for the West Ripley church and for “the family of the individual whose behavior forced this action.

“I have always been proud of his service and the Christian man he is,” Stroupe said of his cousin in a social media post. “I know there is no one more reluctant to use force than him, but I am proud he was willing to do so when necessary.”

Constables are elected law enforcement officers, usually in rural communities, with duties similar to police officers sheriff’s deputies, the Southern Sentinel reported in a 2009 interview with Bullock, then serving his second term as South Half Constable.

“A lot of people don’t really know what we do as constables,” Bullock told the newspaper. “Unlike what people think, we don’t have control over a lot of things, but anyone who has a problem can call us. We want to serve the north and south half of the county to the best of our abilities, but within the law.”

Son shoots at masked gunman found trying to rob parents, police say
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Police are searching for a suspect they say was involved in a home invasion in west Houston.

Officers began receiving calls around 10 p.m. Sunday and were sent to a home near Briar Forest and South Gessner Road.

Police say a husband and wife pulled into their garage on East River Crest when a masked gunman was waiting and forced them inside their home.

Officers say the suspect began demanding the wife's belongings. That's when the husband tried to put up a fight and was later maced by the suspect.

Police say the husband ran out onto the street to get help.

At that time, police say the couple's son was returning home and saw the suspect run from their yard down the street.

Police say the suspect fired at the son and the son fired back, but the man ultimately got away.

Police say no injuries were reported and it's unclear if the suspect got away with anything.

Robbery investigators canvassed the area for any cameras that might've caught the incident. The suspect is being described as a tall male, dressed in all black and was last seen wearing a ski mask.

Black Man Acquitted After Killing White Man During Racially Charged Bar Dispute
    Stephen Spencer
    Stephen Spencer
Pittston, PA — Stephen Spencer, a 31-year old Black man from Pennsylvania, has been found not guilty after he shot a white man to death while defending himself during a racially charged dispute.

On a late Sunday night in July 2017, Spencer was in a bar when he got into an argument with Christopher Williams, a 32-year old white man when Williams refused to shake Spencer’s hand. The situation escalated and Spencer fired one shot that hit and killed William, who was unarmed at that time.
Spencer immediately turned himself in. He was then charged with criminal homicide, simple assault, and terroristic threats.

After more than a year, however, a jury acquitted Spencer of all charges. He was freed after being held in jail for almost 15 months.

During his trial, Spencer testified that he acted in self-defense. He claimed he had been enduring racial taunts inside the bar that night before he left. He said that a group of several white men followed him outside the bar and yelled at him, “We’re going to get you, n—–!” Fearing for his life, he pulled out his gun and fired one shot.

Meanwhile, the prosecution argued that what Spencer did could not have anything to do with the confrontation inside the bar and said he should have ran away instead of pulling out his firearm.

But in a rare case, the court sided with Spencer, a Black man, and acquitted him.

“I was fighting for my life for 15 months and I finally made it. Justice was served,” Spencer said.

Spencer was described during the trial as a family man and a business owner. It was also stated that he has a concealed carry permit and has no criminal record.

His lawyer, John Pike, said the case was “more than just someone shooting an unarmed person. And the jury saw it, they saw it for what it was — ugly racism.”

2 shot in Avondale Waffle House parking lot by man who said he fired in self-defense
    BY MICHELLE HUNTER | Staff writerAug 12, 2019 - 12:54 pm
Deputies responding to reports of gunfire in the parking lot of an Avondale Waffle House early Sunday morning found two women who had been shot after one of them allegedly tried to rob a man, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Jannika Havies, 18, of Harvey, who suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, was booked with attempted armed robbery, said Capt. Jason Rivarde, a Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The second shooting victim, a 20-year-old woman, suffered gunshot wounds to her chest and leg. Her condition was not available Monday.

The shootings occurred about 12:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the restaurant, located at 3071 Highway 90, Rivarde said.

When deputies arrived, they found Havies and the other wounded woman in the men’s restroom at a motel nextdoor to the restaurant, authorities said. They were taken to University Medical Center in New Orleans.

The deputies also discovered a black Honda Civic with the engine running at the back of the Waffle House parking lot. The driver's side of the car was riddled with bullet holes, the Sheriff's Office said.

About 90 minutes after the shooting, a man driving a gray Nissan Altima pulled into the hotel parking lot and approached deputies. The man admitted that he was the person who shot one of the occupants of the Honda Civic. It’s not clear whether the man knew two people had been wounded.

The man told investigators that a woman had earlier approached his car in the restaurant’s parking lot, and the two began talking, authorities said. At one point, the woman got into the vehicle as they conversed, authorities said.

But when the two began arguing, the man ordered the woman out of the car. The woman allegedly pulled a pistol and told the man, “Give me everything,” according to Rivarde.

The man, who was also armed, said he feared for his life and fired his gun several times. He then fled the parking lot, authorities said. The Altima's driver was not arrested, Rivarde said.

Deputies spoke to another, unidentified man who said he had been inside the Honda Civic but told investigators he was asleep at the time and didn’t see the altercation, authorities said.

Havies was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center Sunday, according to jail records. She was being held there Monday in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

Man Shoots And Kills Pit Bull

A Summerville man claims he shot a pit bulldog after it charged after him twice Friday morning, according to a Chattooga County Sheriff’s report.

Chris Burrage, of Back Berryton Road, was mowing the grass around 9:30 a.m. when a gray-colored pit bulldog charged at him.

“Mr. Burrage advised that the dog first charged at him on the mower then ran back toward his neighbor’s residence. Mr. Burrage advised that the dog then turned and charged at him again while he was on his lawnmower,” Deputy Nick Robinson reported. “Mr. Burrage advised that the second time the pit bull charged at him, he fired two rounds at the dog,
striking it once in the neck.”
Burrage called the sheriff’s department and requested a report. Deputy Robinson was shown where the dog died in Burrage’s yard.
