Retired cop who shot man trying to carjack him at car wash was justified in firing, grand jury finds
By Sophie Nieto-Munoz | NJ Advance Media for NJ.comToday 4:47 PM
A grand jury has ruled that a retired Newark police officer was justified in using deadly force by shooting a man during a carjacking attempt in September 2017, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office said Thursday.

The incident occurred at a 24-hour car wash on Edgar Road in Elizabeth around 5 a.m. on Sept 20, 2017. Police officers arrived at the business and found Krishad Jones, 23, who had been shot multiple times, and the retired officer, who the prosecutor’s office has not publicly named.

An investigation by the prosecutor’s Shooting Response Team found the retired officer turned his back to his car while getting a towel at the car wash. Dequelle Nelson, who was with Jones, entered the vehicle attempting to steal it, the office said in a summary of the case.

When the former cop confronted the man in his car, Jones punched him in the back of his head twice, initiating a “brief physical altercation that ended with the retired officer firing his handgun at Jones," according to the statement.

The retired cop shot Jones five times; two hit him in his back.

Nelson fled the scene in another nearby vehicle, and Jones was transported to University Hospital in Newark for treatment. He was later charged with first-degree carjacking and second-degree robbery.

Jones claimed self defense — saying his contact with the officer was a “tap on the shoulder” — but the incident was caught on video, and investigators found Jones assault the officer from behind, prompting the officer to fire, the office said.

Nelson was charged a month later with carjacking, theft by unlawful taking and two counts of conspiracy to commit a crime. The cases against him are ongoing, records show.

Jones later pleaded guilty to carjacking and last month was sentenced to eight years in state prison.

The grand jury, In March of this year, heard testimony and examined evidence from the prosecutor’s Shooting Response Team, and found the retired officer’s actions justified and declined to file any charges.

Since January of this year, the state Attorney General’s Office has been tasked with investigating police use of deadly force. Because this incident occurred before the law was enacted and was not fatal, the Union prosecutor’s shooting team conducted the investigation.

I debated whether or not to put this one in the thread since the woman who defended herself was selling marijuana. But in the end she was a citizen who was attacked and used a firearm to defend herself. The firearm made a difference. There is a chance she would be dead without it.

A woman shot a teenager dead at a Nashville gas station on Wednesday evening in self-defense after he attempted to rob her, police believe.

Mykal Prime, 19, was shot and killed in the lot of a Marathon gas station on John A. Merritt Boulevard around 8:30 p.m.

He went to the market, police have said, allegedly to buy marijuana from the woman who eventually shot him.

A 25-year-old woman interviewed by police said Prime got in to the front seat of her car while she was parked at the gas pump.

A friend of Prime's confirmed he had been dropped off at the location to buy marijuana, and the woman admitted to police later that she was the seller he planned to meet.

He allegedly pulled out a gun and attempted to rob her, and hit her with a gun, at which point a struggle ensued and she was able to push him out of the car.

As he was exiting, she pulled out her own gun and shot him once, police said.

Prime collapsed in the parking lot and died at the scene. First responders reported finding a pistol under his body.

Later on Wednesday, around 11:30 p.m., the woman walked into Centennial Medical Center claiming to have been "pistol-whipped" during a robbery, which is where police came into contact with her.

She told detectives that after the shooting she was scared and drove to her apartment before changing her mind and seeking medical attention for the head injuries.

The woman has not been charged in connection with the shooting.

Early reports Wednesday evening tied the shooting to nearby Tennessee State University, but although the crime scene is in walking distance of the university, the location is not part of campus and no connection to the school has been released by police.

NH Dad Pulls Gun on Intruder Until Police Arrive

Three days after a New Hampshire homeowner opened fire on a stranger who had broken into his home, a similar situation unfolded just a few miles away in the same city.
In broad daylight Wednesday afternoon, a man held an attempted burglar at gunpoint while his two kids witnessed the entire ordeal.

The homeowner said he was pulling into his driveway on May Street, his young children in the car, when he saw a stranger standing on his porch. "I don't know who he is, I don't know his intentions, and I don't know why he's here," said David Cameron.

Once Cameron realized that man was trying to break into his home and steal his kids' bikes, he pulled his gun.
He carries it all the time, and while he's never before had to use it for protection, he says this is exactly why he has it.
"Because you never know who is going to do you harm," Cameron said. "I was at the zoo yesterday with my children. It was a great day, we had fun, and then there was a situation."

With 2-year-old Lincoln and 5-year-old Chase sitting feet away in the car, their dad held an attempted burglar at gunpoint.
"The guy like put up his hands and walked backwards," Chase explained.
Rochester Police say 37-year-old Nicholas Closson surrendered and was waiting for officers when they arrived at Cameron's home.

"It felt wonderful to protect my family," Cameron said.
Cameron and his fiancé, Sarah Gosselin, wish this never happened in this first place, but they are hoping it has taught their little one a valuable lesson.

"He asked me if I shot him and I said, 'No, buddy, I had no reason to kill him,'" Cameron explained. "I don't carry a gun to kill people. I carry a gun to neutralize threatening situations."

Closson faces misdemeanor charges of attempted theft and possession of burglary tools. He is also accused of loitering or prowling, a violation. He was released on personal recognizance and is due back in court on Sept. 19. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Gosselin said it's unsettling that Closson was released from jail, but Cameron is confident he won't be returning to the neighborhood.

Stalker Shot and Killed After Threatening Victim's Son
ROBY, TX -- A stalker was shot and killed Tuesday by the victim's son.

According to KTXS, on Tuesday at around 1:00 a.m. the Fisher County Sheriff's Office received a call about a man who was previously charged with stalking returning to their home. He allegedly threatened to kill the homeowner and the son.

When deputies arrived the man identified as Hector Castillo Jr., 47, had already left the house so the deputies began searching the neighborhood.

Once the deputies left Castillo returned to the house and began threatening the homeowner's 22-year-old son who was smoking outside.

This is when the 22-year-old shot Castillo in the chest. He was flown to UMC in Lubbock and died at 2:00 p.m.

    Autopsy results are pending.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Castillo used to be involved with the homeowner. But Clark said they had been separated for several years and he had a history of stalking her.

There are currently no charges pressed on the 22-year-old but the case will be presented to a grand jury.
