Georgia homeowner shoots, kills machete-wielding intruder: cops
    Brie Stimson1 day ago
A Georgia homeowner fatally shot a machete-wielding intruder early Thursday morning, according to a report.

Investigators believe the unidentified suspect lived next door in Doraville, a small town northeast of Atlanta., WSB-AM reported.

The homeowner shot the suspect around 5:30 a.m. when he allegedly caught the man breaking one of his windows.

The suspect was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Dekalb County police said they were also called to the neighborhood a few hours before the incident because of an unconfirmed report that a man was screaming “at the top of his lungs." They weren’t sure if the incidents were related, according to WSB.

Teen shot, killed by off-duty DPS trooper at southside Corpus Christi home is identified

    Alexandria RodriguezUpdated 10:47 p.m. CT July 11, 2019
Anyone with information about these people should call 361-888-8477. Alexandria Rodriguez, Corpus Christi Caller-Times

A teenage boy was fatally shot early Wednesday morning after he was allegedly found inside the vehicle of an off-duty Texas Department of Public Safety trooper.

The teen was identified Thursday as 17-year-old Ronald Elizondo Jr., according to Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office investigator Heraldo Pena.

Elizondo had "trauma to his chest," Pena said. It is unknown how many times Elizondo was shot.

Corpus Christi police officers were called to the 7000 block of Clubgate Drive, near Lipes Boulevard, about 1:30 a.m., Senior Officer Travis Pace said.

The 30-year-old trooper, who has not been identified, provided aid to the teen until paramedics arrived, police said. The teen was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The trooper told police his security system alerted him that someone was on his property. The trooper confronted the person who was inside the trooper's personal vehicle on his driveway, police said.

"There was some type of confrontation that led to the homeowner shooting the suspect," Pace said.

Details of the confrontation have not been made public.

The Corpus Christi Police Department is leading the investigation with support from the Texas Rangers, the investigative division of DPS.

She feared for her life’: Suspected burglar shot multiple times by Santa Cruz County homeowner
Damien Welch repeatedly tried to break in woman’s Seacliff home, authorities say

    Michael ToddJuly 9, 2019 at 5:33 am
SANTA CRUZ — A 25-year-old Aptos man was arraigned Monday in connection with felony burglary after he was shot multiple times by a woman defending her Seacliff home about 3:30 a.m. June 20.

Authorities were familiar with Damien Welch — who has served time in prison — before the home invasion woke neighbors to yelling and gunfire on Cedar Street. Many saw him on the roof when a deputy arrived in the darkness and went inside the home to investigate. The neighbors are accustomed to festivities at the slew of vacation rentals but not the extreme violence that disrupted the last night of spring.

    Damien Welch
“She feared for her life,” Sgt. Dee Baldwin said. “She was startled by someone with a rock. This case is really unique.”

Welch is accused of first-degree burglary, attempted burglary — both felonies — and two misdemeanor charges of prowling with a prior prison term and serious felony conviction.

Superior Court Judge Timothy Volkmann on Monday appointed a public defender to represent Welch.

A neighbor who called 911 the night of the burglary said she heard the disruption and a voice saying “Get out or leave.” Then gunshots rang out in two intervals.

“We could see him on the roof,” the neighbor said. It was raining. More shots rang out.

That neighbor saw a deputy — without backup — go inside the home alone. Within minutes, more than a dozen California Highway Patrol and deputies arrived.

    Unusual

Baldwin said the case is “infrequent” and the Sheriff’s Office is not an advocate for people to resort to shooting others. In this case, however, it wasn’t clear how the woman’s protection could have “evolved in any other way.”

“She did what she had to do to protect herself,” Baldwin said. “We want to avoid shootings all around. Protecting human life is our main focus.

The woman protected herself with a handgun, Baldwin said.

“He tried to get in the house, shots were fired and then he got on a roof while she retreated to a bedroom,” Baldwin said. “That, to us, really increases the severity of this case.”

The man climbed on the roof. It is unclear whether he was on drugs or alcohol.

“We’re waiting on toxicology results,” Baldwin said. “It’s too early to tell.”

Welch in March 2014 was convicted of four felonies — twice for burglary, robbery and attempted burglary. Volkmann sentenced the defendant to 72 months in San Quentin.

    What happened?

Detectives have been waiting for Welch to be released from a Bay Area hospital to be arrested. Welch had taken a large rock and smashed the window of a side door, trying to get inside, Baldwin said.

“What he didn’t realize is that the woman in the home was armed,” Baldwin said.

She feared for her life and shot him.

“That didn’t stop him and he tried to find another way inside,” Baldwin said. “The woman called 911 as she retreated to her upstairs bedroom.”

The accused intruder scaled the roof toward the bedroom. The woman shot him, “causing him to stop,” Baldwin said.

A preliminary hearing is slated for 9 a.m. July 22 in Superior Court.

Welch was in Santa Cruz County Jail on Monday. Bail was $75,000.

Homeowner shoots, kills bear in Vallecito
Wildlife officials say bruin was displaying aggressive behavior

    Jonathan Romeo
A homeowner in Vallecito on Sunday shot a bear displaying aggressive behavior and little fear of people, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

CPW spokesman Joe Lewandowski said the bear killed was the same one that was trapped and tagged at the Lake Haviland campground on June 29 after breaking into coolers and food left unsecured by people. At that time, the bear was not displaying aggressive behavior, he said, so it was trapped and moved north of Pagosa Springs.

When the bear showed up at Vallecito last week, it was showing aggressive behavior – killing chickens, turkeys and approaching people, Lewandowski said.

On Saturday, the bear came back and was spotted by the property owner. Lewandowski said the bear appeared to be stalking a 5-year-old boy in the yard. The property owner chased the animal off, but it showed little fear of people and came back later that night and killed more chickens.

Local wildlife officers set a trap at the property Sunday evening.

“Shortly after (the wildlife officer) drove off, the bear showed up again while the residents were doing some yard work,” Lewandowski said. “It came within 10 yards of them and was showing no fear of being near people.”

Around 8 p.m., the property owner shot and killed the bear. Lewandowski said he was “protecting his property so it was legal for him to kill the bear.”

Bryan Peterson with Bear Smart Durango said he saw the bear in question about an hour before it was shot, also getting into a neighbor’s chicken coop. He said it is imperative for residents raising chickens, small livestock, bees and more in bear country to use electric fencing.

“To keep bears from developing habits we don’t want, residents should be proactive and not wait until they have a bear in their chicken coop to address this,” he said. “No bear should lose its life due to chickens. Protect your investment, keep bears from lingering in your neighborhood and save bears.”

Lewandowski, too, said people living in bear country need to be vigilant by locking vehicle doors, closing garage doors and windows, as well as taking down bird feeders.

So far this year, CPW has had to euthanize only one bear. On June 9, a bear broke into a well-secured enclosure near Bayfield and killed chickens, Lewandowski said. It was trapped and euthanized.

Lewandowski said bears are active and wildlife officers are receiving reports daily of sightings and some property damage. He said most of the activity seems to be in unincorporated La Plata County, with a number of reports coming from around Vallecito.

Last week, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Bear Smart Durango and volunteers removed a food cache consisting of dozens of buckets of black-eyed peas, rice and powdered milk from a location near Vallecito Lake and cleaned up the area, Peterson said.

The building containing the food stash had collapsed during this winter’s heavy snowfall, and a good number of bears had been using the abundant food source.

“Trail cameras installed post-cleanup revealed less and less bears returning to the area with each passing day, with bears discovering the food was gone,” Peterson said. “Remove the food and bears move on.”

Tuolumne County authorities say intruder was shot after entering sleeping couple’s tent
    July 12, 2019 02:07 PM, Updated July 12, 2019 09:44 PM

Authorities believe the man fatally shot Thursday at Deadman’s Campground near Kennedy Meadows in Tuolumne County, CA, had entered the tent of a sleeping couple he did not know and died during the ensuing confrontation. Tuolumne County Sheriff

The man who was fatally shot early Thursday at a campground near Kennedy Meadows had entered the tent of a sleeping couple he did not know and was killed during the ensuing confrontation, according to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department’s preliminary investigation.

The department issued the update Friday in a Facebook post. The shooting took place at Deadman Campground in a high-elevation part of the Stanislaus National Forest along Highway 108 and near the Kennedy Meadows Resort. The area is about 2 1/2 hours northeast of Modesto.

“Reports indicate that a man and his girlfriend were asleep in their tent when an unassociated 36-year-old Watsonville man entered their tent” about 2 a.m., according to the post. “The woman woke up to the Watsonville man on top of her. The woman yelled to wake up her boyfriend ... During the ensuing confrontation, the Watsonville man was shot, causing his death.”

The department reported that investigators are working with the Tuolumne County District Attorney’s Office and no arrests have been made. The Sheriff’s Department said names are not being released now, pending more investigation and notification of family.

A department spokesman did not return a phone call seeking more information Friday afternoon. And a woman who answered the phone at the Kennedy Meadows Resort said she did not have any information.

Man shot in Hayden after allegedly stealing four-wheeler
    Derek Maiolo
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A West Routt man was shot Saturday morning after allegedly stealing a four-wheeler in Hayden.

At first, Hayden Police Department officers and Routt County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a burglary on the west end of town at 8:30 a.m., according to Chief Greg Tuliszewski.

A 21-year-old man reportedly had broken into a barn and driven off the four-wheeler. The name of the suspect is not being released because he has not been taken into custody yet.

Law enforcement had just arrived on scene when they received a notification of a shooting in the 400 block of South Third Street, just a few blocks away. Officers and deputies arrived within minutes and found a man on a four-wheeler with what appeared to be pellet wounds on his lower back and elbow, according to Tuliszewski.

A juvenile male, whose family owned the four-wheeler, noticed the man driving by, according to Tuliszewski. The juvenile had a 12-gauge shotgun in his truck filled with birdshot, small pellets used for hunting. He felt threatened by the burglary suspect, so he shot him in what he claimed to be an act of self-defense.

West Routt Fire Protection District firefighters stabilized the wounded man and transported him to the UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center.

“None of the injuries are life-threatening, and he will be released shortly,” Tuliszewski said Saturday afternoon, adding the man will be taken into custody following his release.

Police have not determined a motive for the burglary yet, but an investigation is ongoing.

“We have no conclusive evidence, but I suspect there were other substances (drugs) involved,” Tuliszewski said.

The case has been brought to the district attorney’s office, according to Tuliszewski. Attorneys will determine what action, if any, will be taken against the juvenile who shot the man.

Tuliszewski applauded the collaborative effort between the multiple first responder agencies that responded within minutes to the incident.

“It was a good team, interagency effort,” he said.

Noise complaint prompts fatal shooting at Dalton motel
A guest was shot and killed at a Dalton motel early Saturday after trying to force his way into an upstairs room, authorities said.

The man, who was not identified, reportedly had an issue with the amount of noise coming from the room above his at the Motel 6 on Chattanooga Road, Dalton police spokesman Bruce Frazier said.

Officers received a call about a noise disturbance at the motel about 2:30 a.m., Frazier said. Apparently, a guest on the first floor called to complain about the noise upstairs. When officers arrived, however, the occupants of both rooms were asleep, police said.

A short time later, officers were called back to the motel after the man complained about noise coming from a different room, which turned out to be vacant, police said.

An hour later at about 3:20 a.m., the man downstairs walked up to room 226 and began banging on the door and threatening the occupant, authorities said.

The guest inside the room was armed with a handgun and when the man tried to force his way inside the room, he was shot several times, Frazier said.

The guest who fired the shots called 911 and rendered aid to the man, who was declared dead when police arrived.

Police believe the man in the upstairs room acted in self-defense, but the shooting remains under investigation, Frazier said

Man shot, woman hurt in apparent domestic incident, Atlanta police said
According to investigators, a man intervened during an apparent domestic incident.

ATLANTA — A man was shot and wounded and a woman was hurt when a man stepped into the middle of an apparent domestic incident in southeast Atlanta early Saturday morning.

Police were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 900 block of Hank Aaron Drive S.E., at about 3 a.m. after receiving a report of a person shot.

According to Atlanta Police Officer Jarius Daugherty, when officers arrived, they discovered a man identified as Quartez Goodman with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

The preliminary police investigation indicates that Goodman went to the apartment complex and began to assault a woman. Officers on the scene said the incident was an apparent domestic dispute. During that incident, Goodman pulled out a handgun and pointed it at her.

At that point, according to Daugherty, another man apparently intervened and tried to stop the assault. Goodman then turned and advanced on the second man, who, according to Daugherty, pulled out a gun of his own and shot Goodman in the chest.

Goodman was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition. Daugherty said that the woman involved in the altercation was also taken to Grady to be treated for injuries she received during the assault.

Daugherty said that Goodman was charged with aggravated assault and battery in connection with the incident.

Police are continuing their investigation of the incident.

Pastor held burglary suspect at gunpoint inside Florida church

This pastor believes in a higher firepower.

A quick-thinking clergyman at a Florida church held a burglary suspect at gunpoint early Thursday until cops arrived minutes later, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

“I said, ‘Dude, what are you doing?’” Pastor Brant Adams of Seminole Heights Baptist Church told the newspaper. “He wasn’t looking for a fight, which I thank the Lord for.”

Instead, Adams said, the suspect — later identified by cops as 49-year-old Miguel Otero-Rivera — complied with his demands to get on the floor as the man of God stayed several feet away.

Otero-Rivera, who allegedly tried to swipe a laptop from the church, smashed a window before getting inside the building and knocked down several doors. Adams said he also left blood throughout the church after cutting his back on a window, causing thousands of dollars in damages.

The pastor spotted Otero-Rivera as he was exiting a food pantry operated inside the church — and said he would’ve helped the man had he simply spoken up.

“The simple message is: If you need help, ask for it,” Adams told WTVT. “You don’t need to steal. If he would’ve just come to the back door and knocked … We would’ve given him some food.”

Otero-Rivera was jailed Thursday on charges including burglary of an unoccupied structure and grand theft, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

In a statement on its Facebook page, church officials downplayed a local news report of the “pistol-packing pastor,” saying the alliterative moniker was neither funny nor cute.
