2 injured after shots fired during Fourth of July burglary in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. – Two people were injured after shots were fired during an attempted home break-in in Chesterfield County on the Fourth of July.

Police were called to the 1900 block of South Twilight Lane for a report of a burglary in progress on Thursday night.

Investigators say a male homeowner encountered an unknown adult female inside his residence and asked her to leave. After the woman refused to leave, police say the homeowner fired several shots warning shots from a handgun in an attempt to deter the woman.

Police say the woman continued to approach the homeowner which led to a physical altercation between the two and other occupants of the residence.

When officers arrived at the scene, the female suspect, who has not been identified, was taken into custody. She was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The homeowner was also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say no one was shot during the incident and charges are pending against the suspect as they continue to investigate the incident.

The owner of an Arizona fireworks stand shot and killed a man who tried to rob his business on Wednesday, according to media reports.

Daniel Torres, a 26-year-old Buckeye man, tried to rob the Goodyear stand at gunpoint on July 3 shortly before 9 p.m., according to Lisa Berry of the Goodyear Police Department.

That’s when a man working at the stand — the owner of the business, 3TV reports — shot Torres, police said. Torres was hospitalized in serious condition and died later, ABC15 reports.

A woman escaped the scene in a gold Honda ULX with AZ wheelchair plate LAG50, according to police. Berry wrote in an email that police “are seeking the female subject who was a passenger in the vehicle for questioning.”

It happened about 10 a.m. Friday when a couple at a home on Connie Drive in Claysburg were having a discussion and their 4-year-old male pit bull latched onto the husband.

When the couple’s adult son, Allen Cox, tried to intervene, the dog turned on him, Sharkey said. Connie Cox, 67, was also attacked and suffered injuries that include a bite to the face when she tried to stop the attack, police said.

Police indicated that Allen Cox, who is in his 40s, suffered numerous injuries in the attack, including having his right arm nearly chewed off. Chief Sharkey said William Cox was severely injured and had a serious bite to the left arm and was bitten on the right arm as well as his head.

CARLY CARVER The Daily Independent 27 min ago

BOYD COUNTY – A man was critically wounded in a shooting involving a Boyd County employee who told authorities he acted in self defense, authorities said.

Deputies responded to the shooting incident at 2:50 a.m. Saturday at 1484 Court of Three Sisters at a trailer park. Boyd County Sheriff Bobby Jack Woods said deputies found Bradley A. Mills, 24, of Boyd County on the kitchen floor of a residence with a gunshot wound to the upper body. He was flown to a hospital and is in critical condition.

The sheriff identified the shooter as Chris Hutchison of the Ashland - Boyd County - Catlettsburg Office of Emergency Management. An online emergency website identifies a Chris Hutchison as a deputy director.

Woods said Hutchison was involved in a domestic disturbance. Mills was in a verbal argument which became physical with Hutchison, a struggle ensued, and Hutchison allegedly shot Mills once in the chest, Woods said.

Mills was flown to Cabell-Huntington Hospital and is listed in critical condition, said Woods.

Deputies interviewed Hutchison who said the shooting was self-defense. No arrest has been made.

The shooting remains under investigation and once completed will be forwarded to commonwealth attorney for review, said Woods.

Woods said that the two subjects live together at the residence, and Mills is the boyfriend of Hutchison’s sister.

The Daily Independent will update the story as more information becomes available.

Police believe Wednesday shooter acted in self defense
    Most Popular Our Picks
A Conway man who was shot as he allegedly attempted to rob a neighbor Wednesday morning is now behind bars in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

Keylan Marshun Banks, 23, of Conway appeared via video conference before District Judge Chris R. Carnahan on Friday following a Wednesday shooting that left him injured.

After reviewing the allegations against Banks, Carnahan approved deputy prosecutor Cody Arnold’s request to hold the Conway man behind bars in the Faulkner County Detention Center in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

“These are very serious charges that you’re facing,” Carnahan said to Banks on Friday, adding that two of the charges filed against the 23-year-old were Class Y felonies.

Class Y felonies carry either a 10-40-year or life prison sentence.

Online records show Banks was formally charged at 10:27 a.m. Friday with one count each of aggravated robbery, aggravated residential burglary and aggravated assault.

The case stems from a Wednesday incident that reportedly occurred at the Westlake Apartments in Conway.

Apartment complex staff called authorities after Banks walked into the front office with a gunshot wound in his right side.

Banks claimed he was shot by a man who was driving “a black charger with black-out tinted windows,” according to the felony probable cause affidavit filed against him.

In his statement, Banks said he “was shot on the sidewalk in front of his apartment” and that he suspected the shooter was the same individual who had been “carding” his apartment.

According to the affidavit, police located a live round in Banks’ bag while first responders were assessing his injury.

During the shooting investigation, Conway Police Department spokesman LaTresha Woodruff said authorities pinpointed Banks as the aggressor and not the victim in the case.

Upon investigating, detectives found evidence that pointed to Banks being the aggressor,” she said. “Detectives believe Banks tried to rob a neighbor at gunpoint and the neighbor ended up shooting Banks in self defense.”

After the 23-year-old was released from the Conway Regional Medical Center, he was arrested and taken to the Faulkner County Detention Center.

On Friday, Carnahan said he felt Banks was a “flight risk” as he approved the $500,000 bond.

Banks is scheduled to appear next on July 22 before Circuit Judge Charles “Ed” Clawson Jr. for a plea and arraignment hearing regarding the allegations against him.

Dog shot, killed after biting toddler in Hazleton

HAZLETON — A dog has been shot and killed after it bit the face of a 15-month-old boy on Saturday, police said.

According to a news release, at 4 p.m. Saturday patrol units responded to a call of a dog bite in the 300 block of West Spruce Street. Based on the facial injuries the toddler sustained, emergency personnel transported him to an area trauma center.

Police said the toddler’s father was watching the dog for an unknown party when the canine bit the child. At some point, police said, the father allegedly shot the dog. The canine later died.

The police are coordinating efforts with the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office and the dog warden in investigating this incident.

Later Saturday, a Hazleton police detective transferred the deceased canine to a West Hazleton veterinarian clinic. The child is recovering from his injuries.

“We are all praying for the recovery of the child at this time,” police Chief Jerry Speziale said in a news release Saturday. “I want to thank the West Hazleton veterinarian clinic for opening their doors to assist us in this very difficult matter.”

Authorities near the scene of a road rage shooting in northwest Harris County on July 7, 2019.
HOUSTON - Deputies are trying to figure out just what happened in a road rage incident that has landed one person in the hospital after a shooting in northwest Harris County.

Deputies tell KPRC 2 the shooter was not in either of the vehicles. He is actually a homeowner, authorities say.

The shooting happened in the 16600 block of Royal Mile Lane and Tain Drive.

Authorities from the Harris County Sheriff's Office say the drivers of a red Ford F150 and a Toyota Camry twere in some kind of road rage incident when they stopped in front of a man's home on Royal Mile Lane and Tain Drive. The homeowner tells authorities that when he asked the drivers to leave, the driver of the Camry tried to run him over, so the homeowner shot at the vehicle.

The driver was struck at least once, then drove off a few blocks. He stopped on Ben Nevis.

Cy-Fair emergency responders transported the man to Ben Taub. He is expected to survive

Authorities say deputies found multiple bullet casings in the front yard of the house where the shooting occurred.

The man who opened fire is cooperating for the most part, authorities say. There were no other witnesses to the shooting.

Police: Armed clerk thwarts would-be robber

Authorities charged a Wilson man in connection to an attempted armed robbery at a local convenience store.

Wilson police were dispatched to a 10:01 a.m. call to the Romanian Supermarket on Pender Street last week.

When officers arrived, they spoke to a store clerk who said that a man with a mask entered the store and passed a note saying he had a gun and wanted the store’s money, according to Sgt. Steve Stroud.

But the clerk confronted the would-be robber with a gun she had and the man fled the store without any money, Stroud said.

Responding officers were able to get a description of the man and found him walking the area of Ward Boulevard and Hadley Street. Police identified the suspect as 22-year-old Jacob S. Dawson. Stroud said the note he passed to the store clerk was still in his pocket when police arrested him.

Dawson is charged with attempted armed robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was jailed under a $200,000 secured bond.
