BASILE, La.(KLFY)- Four suspects are facing criminal charges after a resident shot an intruder inside his home earlier this week, authorities said.

Early Monday morning, a homeowner was awoken after hearing noises of a burglar entering his home through a bedroom window, and a bedroom light being turned on.

The homeowner opened fire and shot the intruder once in the right thigh, and once in the right upper arm. The subject was detained by an off-duty Evangeline Parish deputy living in the neighborhood when he exited the home. The deputy was all able to detain three other male subjects who allegedly assisted the suspect in the attempted burglary, authorities said.

Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office arrived and completed, a brief investigation and three of the subjects were arrested and transported to the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office Jail and charged with simple burglary of inhabited dwelling, and criminal trespassing.

A bond was set on June 13 for each subject totally in the amount of $40,000.

The Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office is currently seeking the public's help in locating a fourth male subject who was involved in the burglary. He is identified as Shane Lashone Ceasar, said to be living in Opelousas. Ceasar faces the same charges.

If anyone has any information, or comes into contact with Shane Ceasar, they are asked to contact the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office Investigations Division at 337-363-2161.

Mary Kelleher was getting ready for work Thursday morning when her guinea hens started squawking, as they do when there’s something strange in the yard.

Kelleher immediately knew what it was: one of the coyotes that has been prowling around her 12-acre property on the east side of Fort Worth, taking chickens, geese, even newborn calves.

“I grabbed the gun, went on the back porch and shot it,” the former Tarrant County water district board member said. “I’ve shot at them a couple of times, but this is the first time I’ve had a confirmed kill.”

Kelleher took a photo of the dead coyote, which she believes was a young male, and posted the picture on Facebook with the message: “One less chicken-stealing varmint! Dropped it from the back porch.”

Coyotes — as well as bobcats and other wildlife — have been a growing concern for Kelleher and many throughout North Texas, as new development springs up, replacing vacant fields and natural areas that had been home to wildlife.

State law stipulates that people may shoot coyotes that threaten livestock, domestic animals or fowls.

City ordinance also allows a firearm to be discharged when “lawfully defending” property, which includes livestock, said Gerald Pruitt, deputy city attorney for Fort Worth.

Kelleher said she’s gotten varying reactions about her social media post.

“Most of it has been pretty positive,” she said. “Some people feel sorry for the coyotes and I agree. I feel sorry for them, too, but I have to protect my livestock.”

Nearly a decade ago, then-Texas Gov. Rick Perry drew national attention for shooting a coyote while he was out jogging on a trail near Austin.

He said he used the .380 Ruger he carried while jogging, because he’s afraid of snakes, to shoot and kill the coyote that ran toward his puppy.

    Kelleher used a .204 Ruger.

This was an iffy one to put in this thread since the homeowner did not use a real gun. This could have gone bad real fast. I am including this in the thread since the criminal changed their behavior and it shows how thinking the homeowner had a gun changed this situation.

Florida homeowner detains suspect by holding iPhone like a gun: report
    Brie Stimson3 hours ago

A Miami homeowner was able to get a suspected car burglar to lie down on the ground with his hands behind his back Monday evening by holding his iPhone like a gun on the man until police arrived, according to a report.

“I immediately called 911, and while talking to the police, I came outside. I pointed the phone to him, and I said, ‘Lay down.’ I start screaming, ‘What are you doing there?’ And he tried to come towards me, and I said, ‘Stay there. Don’t come here,'” the homeowner said of the suspect, later identified as Sheldon Johnson, 27.

“The phone is black, so just pointing at him, it’s just like a weapon,” the homeowner told WSVN in Miami.

When Miami Beach Police arrived about six minutes later Johnson was on the ground with his hands behind his back, the report said.

The homeowner told WSVN the officers “said only one thing, ‘Good job.”'

Johnson faces charges of burglary, attempted grand theft auto and resisting arrest.

Neighbors thwart thieves’ plan, hold them at gunpoint
By CHARLES BOOTHE Bluefield Daily Telegraph3 hrs ago
MONTCALM — Three Bluefield residents remain behind bars after a burglary in Montcalm Tuesday was thwarted by neighbors who stopped the suspects and held them at gunpoint until police could arrive.

Emmett Lee Cyrus, 30, Carless Edward Kegley, 50, and Arbutus Ann Culbertson, 48, all of Nature Lane in Bluefield, were arrested and charged with breaking and entering, larceny over $1,000, attempt to commit a felony and conspiracy to commit a felony offense against the state.

They are being held at Southern Regional Jail on a $20,000 bond.

Mercer County Sheriff’s Office Lt. L.B. Murphy said in the report he filed that a 911 call was received on Tuesday at 9:20 a.m. about a burglary in progress on Red Gate Road.

Murphy, who was accompanied by deputies M.R. Lacy, C.K. Lester and L.L. Addair, said the officers were told a juvenile who resides at the property saw three individuals in a small white Chevy truck come up the driveway and stop in front of the garage.

The juvenile called 911 and said she saw two people from the truck force entry into the garage and remove several items.

“The juvenile also alerted her family and a neighbor of the crimes in progress via phone,” Murphy said in his report.

During the response the officers were told that a friend and neighbor of the family had intercepted the suspects as they were fleeing the scene and blocked the roadway. They also saw property in the truck they knew belonged to the victim of the robbery.

“Upon confronting the suspects, the witnesses became afraid for their safety due to an argument that ensued as well as felonious crimes committed,” Murphy said in the report. “They produced firearms and ordered the suspects to the ground. The witnesses detained the suspects until law enforcement arrived.”

After Murphy and the deputies arrived, all three suspects were taken into custody and “made spontaneous utterances” related to admitting they committed the crimes, Murphy said.

The victim and witnesses also said they had seen the same vehicle on the property on Monday, but nothing was missing.

“It is believed the suspects scoped out the property a day before the actual crimes in order to see when someone was at home and what property they plan to steal,” Murphy said in the report, adding that Culbertson, who was reported to be married to Kegley, “is believed to have worked as a lookout for the other two individuals as they were committing the crimes.”

Items stolen and recovered included two air compressors, a shop heater and various tools.

Grand larceny carries a penalty of one to 10 years in jail; breaking and entering has a punishment of one to 15 years; attempt to commit a felony (that is punishable by less then life) carries a one to three year term; and conspiracy to commit a felony against the state carries a one to five year sentence.

Escaped inmate back in custody, sheriff says
    Region 8 Newsdesk
HARRISBURG, Ark. (KAIT) - The search for an inmate who fled the Poinsett County Detention Center Thursday has ended with the man’s arrest.

According to Poinsett County Sheriff Kevin Molder, Jonathan Ware is now in custody after being found in a house on Elm Street in Harrisburg.

Poinsett County authorities had been looking for Ware, 32, of Harrisburg, who jumped two barbed wire fences to escape the county jail Thursday afternoon.

Ware was in jail on second-degree battery and fleeing charges when he escaped, with Poinsett County deputies, Harrisburg police, Trumann police, Arkansas State Police and Arkansas Highway Police looking for him.

Molder also said in a media post that a warrant for third-degree escape has been issued for Ware in connection with Thursday’s escape.

In addition to the escape charge, Ware was arrested on suspicion of one count of battery on a police officer and Molder said Ware is being investigated in connection with a burglary Thursday.

The escape Thursday was not the first by Ware in recent years.

Ware was arrested in Oct. 2017 on suspicion of second-degree battery after he reportedly escaped police custody. At the time, police said Ware was stabbed in the back by a man after a fight.

Investigators said the man told Ware to stop harassing his mother, he picked up a golf club and hit the man in the head. From there, the man then grabbed a knife and stabbed Ware in the lower back.

Police later searched for Ware and a homeowner found him hiding in a garbage can.

The homeowner held Ware at gunpoint until a Craighead County deputy got to the scene, then arrested him.

Authorities also said area dispatchers played a major role in Ware’s arrest in that case, with it taking seven minutes for authorities to arrive on scene to arrest him.

Region 8 News will have more details as they become available.

Jefferson County man arrested after alleged assault with airplane
    Kitsap Daily News

SILVERDALE — A 56-year-old Port Ludlow man was arrested after allegedly driving a small airplane at a group of people near Apex Airpark in Silverdale, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office.

Jeffrey Wilfred S. Dorsey was arrested for investigation of second-degree assault Thursday with bail set at $200,000. He was released from the Kitsap County jail the same day.

According to the incident report, a man teaching his students at the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course told deputies that he observed Dorsey drive up to the course and honk his horn loudly. The man said he was “loud, obnoxious and intoxicated” and that Dorsey said: “You guys are running down my property value,”according to the report.

Dorsey then allegedly drove off before coming back a few minutes in a small, white airplane. He drove the airplane down the hill and towards the crowd of students, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office.

The students and the teacher were able to get out of the way but Dorsey then allegedly tried to drive the plane towards them once more, prompting the teacher and students to move out of the way again, deputies said.

The man told deputies that when he saw the blades of the propeller spinning and coming at him, he believed Dorsey was going to hit him with the plane. In fear that Dorsey might come back and try again, the teacher allegedly armed himself with a firearm that was located in his vehicle. The man is authorized to carry a concealed pistol, the report said.

Kitsap County deputies obtained a search warrant for the hanger that Dorsey was believed to be in. After breaking down a door to the building, Dorsey was found laying down on a couch and told authorities he had been sleeping and did not hear them knock, according to the police report.
