Property owner runs thieves off with a loaded gun

BEXAR COUNTY - A property owner in south east Bexar County is being called a hero for running off a group of thieves with a gun.

"I can't repeat what I yelled," Fernando Bernal said."That's when they looked at me and tried to jump in the truck."

Fernando Bernal is recounting the PG version of what he said to the thieves rummaging through his work truck.

He heard noises around 2 am Tuesday, and shared a few choice words with the uninvited guests.

"They looked at me, the kind of freaked out, jumped back into the truck they did a little burn out and took off," Bernal said.

Security camera video shows the angry homeowner going after at least three men with a loaded pistol.

"I shot one round into their engine compartment," Bernal said. "They proceeded to take off down the street I waited until they got an angle where I could in between each house where I wasn't going to hit either one of them and then I fired seven more rounds and then they took off."

Bernal says the thieves got away in a Chevy Silverado.

Moments later sheriff's investigators discovered an abandoned truck matching the description with bullet holes.

"They said I did a great job, protecting my property."

The group got away with $1,200 worth of tools the Army Veteran uses for work.

At least six others at Lakeview Ranch had property stolen from their vehicles and garages.

"Their garages were open while they were asleep and most of their power tools and stuff were taken as well," Bernal said.

Bernal hopes what happened here sends a message to thieves.

"Don't be messing with people's stuff that's not yours don’t be trying to take stuff that you don't pay for," Bernal said.

Investigators say a 17-year old male may have learned the hard way.

He showed up at the hospital with gunshot wounds.

"My reaction to that, play stupid games win stupid prizes," Bernal said. "I mean live and learn."

Bexar County investigators are still working to determine if the injured teenager was involved with the crime.

OREM, Utah, Oct. 15, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A burglary suspect who was shot multiple times Monday morning by an Orem homeowner has died in the hospital.

“The suspect from the incident this morning has passed away,” said an Orem Police Department Facebook post that went up just after noon. “We are still in the process of notifying his family.”

An earlier OPD post stated that the shooting took place about 7 a.m. inside a detached garage at a home near 400 North 800 West.

Police on scene said the owner of the home heard a noise, grabbed his gun, and went to investigate. He was then allegedly confronted by an intruder who police said swung an object at the homeowner’s head.

The 49-year-old suspect was shot in torso multiple times. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and later died.

Gephardt Daily is following the story and will provide an update as more information becomes available.

Man Shot During Attempted DHS Home Burglary in Custody

A Hemet man who was shot by a homeowner last fall while allegedly trying to break into a Desert Hot Springs residence is due in court this week on recently filed charges.

Casual Lee Glenn, 24, was wounded last Nov. 14 while allegedly trying to kick down the front door of the residence. Seeing that Glenn was armed with what he later claimed was a pellet gun, the homeowner fired twice through the door, striking Glenn in the stomach, according to an arrest warrant declaration.

One of the residents told police that the intruder initially tried to make entry through a window, then the door, with the entire incident captured on home surveillance video, according to the declaration.

Glenn was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in critical condition. When interviewed by officers at the hospital, Glenn said he did not remember much of the night due to being “heavily intoxicated,” the arrest warrant declaration says.

Prosecutors did not officially file charges him until last month. He was taken into custody Saturday in Moreno Valley and is expected to make his initial court appearance on Wednesday on one count each of burglary and attempted robbery, according to county jail records.

Fatal shooting in Bonner County reported as self-defense
    Published: Oct. 15, 2018, 5:08 p.m.
The Bonner County Sheriff’s Office said the fatal shooting of a 39-year-old man on Friday appears to have been an act of self-defense.

In a news release Monday, the sheriff’s office said deputies, along with an officer from the Priest River Police Department, responded at about 5:15 p.m. Friday to investigate a reported disturbance in the 100 block of Rebel Ridge Road.

While the deputies were en route, a dispatcher reported that a 41-year-old woman had shot a male attacker with a handgun while defending herself and her 70-year-old mother, the sheriff’s office said.

Bystanders, and later deputies and emergency medical personnel, were unsuccessful in their efforts to revive the man, who was identified as Joshua Matthew Cole of Spirit Lake.

The incident remained under investigation Monday and no charging decision had been made, but the sheriff’s office said evidence and witness statements supported a claim of self-defense. It did not release the name of either woman involved.

Accomplice of man killed by Vietnam vet in self-defense found liable, gets 25-year sentence
    Sanford J. Schmidt, sschmidt@thetelegraph.com
    7:43 pm CDT, Monday, October 15, 2018

EDWARDSVILLE — A man whose associate was shot and killed by the Vietnam War veteran the duo attempted to rob was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison, liable for his partner’s death by self-defense at the hands of the 70-year-old, would-be victim.

Perry Richardson, 25, of St. Louis, pleaded guilty in exchange for a prosecution agreement to drop a first-degree murder charge, filed as a result of the theory that Richardson was responsible for the shooting death of his companion, Billy Dean Dickerson.

It was Feb. 2, 2017, in Venice that Dickerson and Richardson pulled up to a car driven by the veteran, who was taking a female friend home, and attempted the robbery. The driver of the victim car, however, pulled a gun and fired at the duo, killing Dickerson and injuring Richardson.

Richardson was sentenced to 12-and-a-half years each for the attempted robbery of the driver and the passenger before Monday’s hearing.

The intended robbery victim was carrying a legally-concealed weapon.

“If you come here to commit your crimes, do not be surprised if you end up on the wrong side of a concealed weapon of a law-abiding citizen,” State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons said at the time Richardson was charged. Authorities said the two robbers were suspected of several other similar crime in the months preceding.

Richardson was originally charged with first degree murder. He was accused of felony murder, which, by law, holds people who participate in a forcible felony legally accountable for a death that happens during commission of the crime. The charge formally accused Richardson of shooting Dickerson.

Richardson has been held in the Madison County Jail without bond. He has a record dating to 2011 when he was convicted of four counts of domestic assault, endangering the welfare of a child and misdemeanor property damage. He also has a conviction for burglary and violation of probation.

SAPD: Argument leads to man shooting son in apparent act of self-defense
Son was breaking items inside home, tried to attack father

    Adrian GarciaPosted: 5:32 PM, October 15, 2018

SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio police were called to a far East Side home after a man turned a gun on his son, shooting him in the leg in an apparent act of self-defense.

Sgt. Daniel Gonzales, with the San Antonio Police Department, said officers were called to the 2800 block of Lake Emerald around 4:03 p.m., where they found a 38-year-old man in the street suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg.

Gonzales said the man, who the family said is schizophrenic, and his father, 62, got into an argument which later turned violent.

Fearing for his life, Gonzales said the father shot his son when the son began breaking items inside the home and moved toward him in an aggressive manner.

The father, who was waiting for police at the home, was taken into custody and will be questioned by family violence detectives to determine if any charges will be filed.

Gonzales said police have been called several times in the past to the home for disturbance-related incidents involving the son and father.

The son was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, Gonzales said.

Glenn was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in critical condition, where sheriff's deputies initially responded because Glenn allegedly told medical staff that he'd been shot at a Moreno Valley address. When interviewed by Palm Springs officers at the hospital, Glenn said he did not
remember much of the night due to being ``heavily intoxicated'' and was dropped off at the hospital by friends, the arrest warrant declaration says.

He's slated to return to court Oct. 29 for a felony settlement conference.

Lindenhurst Man Fatally Shoots Robber In Hammer Attack: Police
After two men who said they wanted to buy a gun showed up at a Lindenhurst home, one wound up dead and the other charged with murder.

Lindenhurst Man Fatally Shoots Robber In Hammer Attack: Police
WAUKEGAN, IL — After a botched gun robbery early Tuesday in Lindenhurst, one man is dead and the other has been charged with his murder and armed robbery, according to the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force. Police received a 911 call around 2:30 a.m. about a possible robbery at a home in the 300 block of Teal Road. When officers arrived, they found a Chicago man dead and an Evanston man being detained at the scene by a resident.

Michael J. Zachery, 23, of the 1600 block of Simpson Street in Evanston, was charged with first degree murder and armed robbery, according to task force spokesman Sgt. Chris Covelli.

Investigators believe he and the Chicago man, identified by the Lake County Coroner's Office as 34-year-old Joseph McHaney, traveled to a home in the 300 block of Teal Road purporting to be interested in purchasing a firearm from a homeowner. Instead, Covelli said, they tried to rob the gun-owning resident with a knife and a hammer.

Zachery was armed with a knife as McHaney struck the homeowner multiple times with a hammer, according to the task force investigation. The resident responded by shooting in self-defense. McHaney was fatally shot by the homeowner and pronounced dead at the scene, Covelli said. Preliminary autopsy results suggest he died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Lake County Coroner's Office.

Someone called 911 from inside the house, and when Lindenhurst police arrived they found Zachery being held at the scene by a resident. Tuesday evening prosecutors approved felony murder charges for the death of his fellow robber for his involvement in the incident, according to Covelli.

Under Illinois law, anyone found to have engaged in a "forcible" felony, such as armed robbery, where someone dies can be charged with first-degree murder, regardless of their intent.

Zachery appeared in bond court Wednesday morning, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office. A judge set his bail at $5 million, meaning he would need to provide $500,000 in cash to secure his release ahead of trial.
