Police: Moncks Corner homeowner's fatal shooting of burglar 'necessary' to protect family

    http://www.postandcourier.com/news/p...ae63a2b78.html
A Moncks Corner resident defended his family Tuesday by fatally shooting a masked man who broke into his home carrying rope and a pistol with a laser sight, authorities said the next day.

The homicide of 30-year-old Elijah Akeem White Jr. of North Charleston was deemed justifiable, and the homeowner is not expected to face charges.

Investigators said a woman who acted as an accomplice in the home invasion by White was arrested. Juanita Marie English, 28, of Logwood Drive in Ladson, faces charges of first-degree burglary and criminal conspiracy.

Chief Rick Ollic of the Moncks Corner Police Department said the rope found on White was a chilling sign of the burglar's intentions. A man, his wife and two small children were home at the time, Ollic said.

"It's believed that he was going to tie up the residents," Ollic said Wednesday. "There was no doubt he was there to do some serious harm to this family."

White's criminal convictions include burglary, weapons and drugs possession and prison rioting.

His killing was Moncks Corner's first homicide this year and the 14th in the tri-county area.

The ordeal unfolded after 8 p.m. on Post Oak Court in the Oakley Pointe subdivision.

English first walked up to the home's front door posing as an official from the homeowners association, Ollic said. She wore a name badge as she asked generic questions of the woman who lived there, the chief said.

She then waved to White in a waiting car.

White came up with gloves on his hands and a mask covering his face. In his hand was a gun with a green laser attached. The resident noticed.

"Seeing a masked gunman approach was terrifying," Ollic said. "She was able to shut and lock the door. It got chaotic. She screamed for her husband."

White kicked in the door. But 27-year-old Justin Washington, the homeowner on the other side, also was armed and shot White four times, Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said.

Authorities responded about 8:15 p.m. and found White's body outside a home at 203 Post Oak Court. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

"In Berkeley County," Salisbury said, "if you kick someone's door in and you get shot, as long as I’m coroner, that will be justifiable homicide."

Shortly after the shooting, English was stopped while driving the car erratically near a Circle K gas station on U.S. Highway 52, Ollic said. At the time, she wasn't known to be a possible suspect in the burglary, but investigators got a search warrant for her car and found the name badge she was alleged to have worn during the break-in, the chief said. The homeowner also picked her out of a photographic lineup, he said.

Prosecutors agreed with the Police Department's decision not to charge the shooter, Justin Washington, 28, with any crimes, Ollic said.

"This homeowner had to do what was necessary to protect his family," he said.

Detectives are trying to figure out why the home was targeted, and the chief said no other residents in the community were in danger.

Medford, Ore. – No criminal charges will be filed concerning a fatal shooting that occurred in Rogue River on April 23.

Fatal shooting in Rogue River ruled self-defense

    https://kobi5.com/news/fatal-shootin...defense-55703/

According to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office, Christopher Haase was acting in self-defense when he shot and killed David Anthony Vaughn.

The D.A.’s office said Haase fired a single shot in response to Vaughn’s entry into his residence amid threats of assault.

Based on witness statement and evidence, the D.A.’s office ruled the shooting was justified under Oregon law.

The law states a person may use deadly physical force against another if that person is entering or trying to enter a dwelling with the intent to use unlawful physical force.

ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) – An early morning robbery attempt has landed one would-be criminal in the hospital with a gunshot wound.

    https://www.victoriaadvocate.com/new...st-edna-woman/
According to Arlington police, an unidentified man was jogging to the gym Wednesday when he noticed a truck following him in the 6000 block of Poly Webb Road, near Interstate-20.

Reports say a juvenile passenger got out of the truck brandished a gun and demanded money from the jogger. The jogger, who was also armed, resisted, pulled his weapon and fired several times. Bullets hit the suspect in the groin area. The injured suspect ran back to the truck and quickly left the scene.

Police quickly found the truck abandoned near Cedar Cove Court and Lindberg Drive. Investigators say the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Arlington on February 16.

Arlington police received tips that the suspect had gotten out of the truck and into an SUV, which they located and stopped at the intersection of Poly Webb Road and Little Road. The SUV was being driven by a woman with the suspect in the passenger seat – who immediately gave up and told cops “I’ve been shot.”

The suspect was taken to Medical City of Arlington — his condition is not known.

Police say the original robbery victim was not hurt, but was shaken up by the experience.

Arlington police believe the shooting will be a case of self-defense but are still investigating.

Castaic Home Invasion Ends With Intruder Shot By Homeowner

    http://www.hometownstation.com/santa...meowner-197470

A Castaic woman was able to fend off a home invader with a handgun Monday morning, according to Sheriff’s Station officials.

Around 2 a.m., a woman noticed a man was trying to force entry into her home on the 36000 block of Ridge Route Road.
Once the suspect had forced entry into her home, the woman fled her residence and then called 911 to report the break in, but she then saw the suspect leave her home.

Thinking she was safe, the woman returned to her home and then barricaded the front door. However, the suspect then broke into the home using a rear entrance, according to Sheriff’s Station officials.
This time around, however, the woman armed herself with a handgun. After a short confrontation with the suspect, the homeowner fired a shot at the suspect, hitting him in the chest.
Deputy personnel arrived on scene and rendered aid until paramedics arrived.
The suspect, a male Hispanic adult, was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in fair condition and is in custody for a burglary charge.

The homeowner declined to comment about the incident when reached by phone Monday, but confirmed the operation of the nearby business, Castaic Canine Camp, was unaffected by the incident.

Neighbors in the remote canyon, who did not wish to give their names, said they were not surprised the homeowner got the upper hand, saying Sheriff’s deputies response times to the area were not as quick as other areas, and residents are prepared for anything that could happen in that time.

62-year-old Marine veteran shoots 3 home invasion suspects in Theodore

    http://www.al.com/news/mobile/index....l?sf92495714=1
A homeowner shot three suspects during an attempted home invasion in Theodore on Thursday afternoon, the Mobile County Sheriff's Office said.

Detectives said a 62-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran shot the suspects as they were trying to get into his home on Thomas Road. According to authorities, the suspects have broken into the man's home before and threatened to harm the victim if he reported the incident to authorities.

The homeowner did report the first incident. When the suspects returned to the residence Thursday, they fired several rounds through the front door. The victim was hit in the shoulder. Authorities said the victim returned fire, injuring all three suspects.

Investigators said two of the suspects drove away from the victim's home to a Dollar General Store at 10800 Dauphin Island Parkway. Deputies arrived at the store to find the two suspects on the ground.

The victim and suspects have been transported to a local hospital. Their conditions are unknown at this time. The sheriff's office said the suspects are in custody while at the hospital and will be booked into Mobile County Metro Jail when released.

District Attorney: No criminal charges in February shooting that killed Casper man

    http://trib.com/news/local/casper/di...04aaf79d1.html

Prosecutors will not file criminal charges in connection with a February shooting in north Casper that killed a 46-year-old man.

The Natrona County District Attorney’s office declined to file charges in the Feb. 16 shooting on North Jackson Street that killed Brandon Machado, District Attorney Mike Blonigen said Monday.

Blonigen said the shooting “appeared to be a case of self-defense,” but did not immediately disclose any further details.

Machado and a woman were both shot the evening of Feb. 16 in their home the 900 block of North Jackson Street

Police found Machado and the woman injured inside the home after a third person called 911.

Machado died of a gunshot wound the next day. The woman, who has not been publicly identified by authorities, was hospitalized and later released.

Authorities have shared few details about the shooting or the circumstances surrounding it.

Casper police on Monday referred questions about the case to the District Attorney, who did not respond to an email asking for more details.

    Southern Oregon man
    will not face charges
    for killing intruder
MEDFORD — A southern Oregon man who fatally shot an intruder two months ago won't face charges.

The Jackson County District Attorney's Office said Monday that 26-year-old Christopher Haase of Rogue River acted in self-defense when he fired a single rifle shot that killed David Anthony Vaughn.

Prosecutors said Vaughn entered the mobile home and attacked Haase's friend. He then threatened to assault Haase while moving toward him.

The Mail Tribune reports Haase lived in one of two mobile homes on the property, while Vaughn's father lived in another.

Oregon law allows someone to use deadly force if he or she reasonably believes the person is attempting to commit a burglary and about to use unlawful physical force.

Burglary in Oregon is entering or attempting to enter a building with the intent to commit a crime.

DeKalb suspected robber shot, killed in ‘justifiable homicide’

    http://www.ajc.com/news/crime--law/d...igr3Gp0GJ7wCM/

When Malik Hyatt saw a masked gunman walk back and forth in front of his apartment door, he had two things in mind: keep his sister safe and grab his gun.

Hyatt shot through his door and killed an armed man who was attempting to break into his home just after midnight Monday, according to a police report. But he likely won’t face charges since officials are calling it a “justifiable homicide,” DeKalb County police spokeswoman Shiera Campbell confirmed.

“This is still an ongoing investigation, but it appears as if the suspect was attempting to forcibly gain entry into the residence,” Campbell said. “The victim was defending himself.”

Hyatt and his sister Taffany were inside their home at the KRC Vista Apartments in Decatur when he heard a knock at the door, according to the report.

Police said Malik Hyatt told his sister to go inside a room and he went to grab his shotgun.

“He observed the male subject having his hands near his side pocket and started kicking on the front door,” Officer S. Nguyen wrote in the report.

Police said Hyatt fired two shots to the suspect’s head, killing him.

Police found the suspect, identified by Channel 2 Action News as 22-year-old Eric Ransom, on the ground unresponsive, holding a black pistol with a shirt over his face.

“In home invasions, you never know what the suspect’s motives are,” DeKalb Lt. Lonzy Robinson told Channel 2. “Maybe it's money, maybe the victim had something they wanted.”

This could change, but sounds like self defense.

Minnetonka shooting suspect released from jail, claims self-defense
    http://www.fox9.com/news/264003657-story

MINNETONKA, Minn. (KMSP) - A Minnetonka man said he was defending himself when he shot and killed a 58-year-old man at a storage facility in Minnetonka Friday.

Police were called to Public Storage on Hedberg Drive around 11 a.m. Friday on reports of a dispute. Police say they were on their way to the scene when they received reports of shots fired.

58-year-old Thomas Luetzow of Minnetonka was killed in the altercation. The shooter has yet to be charged.

According to Matt Higgins, a spokesperson for the city of Minnetonka, the shooter was released shortly after being booked into the Hennepin County Jail, pending a case review by the county attorney’s office.

The suspect, a 65-year-old man from Minnetonka, told Fox 9 in a statement, “It was pure self-defense of myself and a storage employee. Thank you to everyone for their support and understanding.”

According to court records, Luetzow has a history of assault and disorderly conduct. In separate incidents, he assaulted neighbors in his apartment building after complaining that they were “too loud.”

The shooter in Friday’s incident says he called 9-1-1 as soon as Luetzow started yelling obscenities at him. But before police could arrive, the man was on his back being physically assaulted by the man.

The man shot Luetzow, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutor: Shooter acted in self-defense in fatal road rage shooting

    http://fox17online.com/2017/06/30/pr...rage-shooting/

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Kent County Prosecutor has released more information Friday morning regarding an apparent road rage shooting that left one person dead and another one wounded.

Donald Dudley, 20, was shot and killed in the early morning hours of May 22 on M-37, north of Sparta Avenue NW. His brother, Benjamin, 18, was wounded.
Robert Chipman Jr., 43, of Newaygo, told deputies he shot both men during a physical altercation. Chipman has a valid state concealed pistol license, investigators say.

Friday morning, Prosecutor Chris Becker said that he will not be pressing charges against Chipman, believing that they would not be able to prove that Chipman was not acting in self-defense.

Becker said during the altercation, both Dudleys approached Chipman's vehicle with "hostile intent." Seeing the situation as a possible 2-on-1 altercation, Chipman was justified in using self-defense, according to Becker. They had also allegedly thrown at item at Chipman's vehicle.

You can watch the entire statement from Becker below. You can read the entire document here: Prosecutor Road Rage Decision
