A woman charged with attempted second-degree murder in connection with a shooting at a New Orleans East motel last year was found not guilty by a jury Friday (July 27) afternoon.

Cherrie Mitchell, 41, was acquitted at the end of a three-day trial. Her lawyers, Orleans Public Defenders Laura Bixby and Arthur Rowe, argued the shooting was self defense.

Mitchell was accused of shooting a 33-year-old woman in the back of her head at the Knights Inn motel in the 5800 block of Read Boulevard in New Orleans East on June 13, 2017. The women were physically fighting before Mitchell fired the shot, police said.

Police said Mitchell and the woman had known each other for two decades, and Mitchell was dating the woman's brother.

Man dies in shooting at Castle Point apartment complex in South Bend

SOUTH BEND — A man has died after a shooting Friday at the Castle Point Apartments.

Police were called to the apartment complex about 8 p.m. Friday on reports that a suspect in a possible home invasion had been shot by the resident.

A man was seen being taken on a stretcher to a local hospital by emergency personnel. Tim Corbett, commander of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit, said Friday night that the man had died.

Linda Howell, a resident who lives across from the apartment where the shooting took place, said she heard a popping noise shortly after coming home from work. She said that the noise surprised her because she had not experienced any kind of trouble in the 11 years that she has lived there.

“I was back in the kitchen getting something out of the refrigerator and I heard a pop,” she said. “It was just a weird sound that I had not heard before.”

Howell said that she thought that it might have been a muffled gunshot.

“I looked out and didn’t see anything, and then all of a sudden there were police and ambulances.”

Metro Homicide investigators were in charge of the case.

Woman fends off East Memphis home intruders with shotgun
Posted 9:55 pm, July 27, 2018, by Troy Washington, Updated at 06:02AM, July 28, 2018
    Woman fights off intruders

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some would-be criminals picked the wrong home to try to break into and found an East Memphis woman was locked, loaded and ready.
As Whitney Lyne tried to wind down for bed on Thursday, some bad guys had other plans.

"As soon as that window burst, I'm running right at her and I am jamming that gun through the door at her," Lyne said.

It started with a single doorbell ring, which startled Lyne because she wasn't expecting anyone.

"This person starts ringing the doorbell more, banging on the door ... She was just banging on the door. You could tell the difference between a fist and a palm hitting it, ringing the doorbell."

She didn't know it at the time but it was a woman opening her storm door and twisting the knob on the locked wood front door on Warwick Street.

As Lyne stared through the curtains trying to catch a glimpse of the woman, she realized the lady wasn't by herself.

"As soon as I peeked back out I could see this big man sitting in a silver car its parked in my driveway," she said.

These bad guys seemed bold enough to park right behind Lyne's car as if they were invited over.

"Then I heard a boom and things went silent, and thought she had burst in through the wood door at front and it just got quiet."

The woman was trying to come in through the front door. At that point, Lyne's two dogs lost it.

And that's when she swallowed her fears and grabbed the shotgun her husband told her to use for protection.

Now charging for the side door, where the woman had broken the glass and ready to come in, Lyne and the shotgun stopped the woman dead in her tracks.

"She just nonchalantly just stopped and slowly put her hand up, just walked to her car," Lyne said. "The guy looked at her, put his hands in the air, backed up and just sped off and they were gone."

The crooks didn't get anything. Lyne agreed to talk with us because she wants people in her neighborhood to be on the lookout in case the man and woman try to pull this stunt anywhere else.

Sheriff Says Attempted Robber of Bar at Large
    Jul 26, 2018
    Community
    ALAN OLSON Staff Writer

Photo by Alan Olson The Last Shot Cantina on National Road was the site of an attempted robbery Tuesday morning.

Ohio County Sheriff’s deputies are searching for the man accused of attempting to rob a Triadelphia bar in the late night hours Tuesday morning after after the bartender tried to dissuade the robber by pulling a gun of his own.

According to Ohio County Sheriff Tom Howard, police were working through Wednesday to obtain surveillance footage of the incident, which occurred around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First and Last Shot Cantina, on National Road in Triadelphia.

Howard said the man allegedly drew a gun at the door to the bar, only to take off running when the employee drew his own weapon.

“The guy showed up at the door, brandished a weapon, and the employee brandished his weapon back,” Howard said. “The guy took off running. We got the dogs on him, they tracked him, and they found his car over by Wanda’s (Bargain Barn), and he got in his car and took off.”

Howard said footage would be pulled sometime Wednesday. After it was analyzed, the sheriff’s office would release information in an attempt to identify the man.

Howard said he is a proud supporter of the second amendment right to defend oneself. He said whether employees should be allowed to carry weapons on the job should be up to individual businesses.

“I’m very pro-right-to-carry, but that’s up to the individual business as to let them carry like that,” he said.

A representative from The Last Shot declined to comment on the matter Wednesday morning other than to say it had been business as usual since the attempted robbery.

Woman fatally shoots estranged husband in northeast Las Vegas
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (Las Vegas Review-Journal)
A woman shot and killed her estranged husband last week in the northeast valley, Las Vegas police said.

The husband climbed up to the second-story balcony of a house on the 4000 block of Emerald Wood Street, near Nellis and Las Vegas boulevards, and shattered a sliding glass window, police said.

The woman shot him about 2:20 a.m., killing him at the scene, Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Ray Spencer said.

Police did not arrest her, and detectives will submit the case to the district attorney’s office for review, he said.

The Clark County coroner’s office will release his identity.

His death marked the 119th homicide in the county and the 99th investigated by Metro this year, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal records. Six of the county’s last eight homicides have been the result of a domestic dispute.

Man breaking into stepfather's Pine County home is shot, in critical condition, officials say
A 30-year-old old man is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot early Thursday by his stepfather after breaking into the older man’s home in Rutledge, Minn., authorities said Thursday.

According to the Pine County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at the home just after midnight Thursday in response to a report that a man was trying to break into the residence. As they were on their way, a report came in that a shot had been fired.

Upon arrival, deputies found the alleged intruder inside the house, suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. The person who fired the shot was the man’s 59-year-old stepfather, authorities said.

The wounded man was taken by helicopter to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, where he was in critical condition Thursday.

The stepfather cooperated with authorities and was released pending further investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said. Neither man’s name has been released. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting in the investigation.

Wow, sad ending for this one. Unless something changes, It sounds like the homeowner successfully defended himself from an intruder, but there was some fail in the aftermath and he was shot by the cops. I am including this because he did successfully defend himself, and there is a lot to be learned from this.

I started another thread for this one here. http://forum.pafoa.org/showthread.ph...46#post3825546

When they arrived, officers say they heard gunshots and were approached by a man with a gun. That’s when an officer opened fire and killed the man. They later learned that man lived at the home.

Investigators later entered the home and found a child who was hurt and the intruder who was dead on the bathroom floor.

“We are dealing with several people involved in this incident. If there’s somebody, maybe witnesses that we haven’t spoken to, we’re definitely asking for them to give us a call,” said Kenneth Forrest, a spokesman with Aurora police.

Neighbors tell CBS4 the suspect kicked down the victim’s door while he was naked. They say the victim is a man in his 60s. They also say a young girl witnessed everything and ran across the street to get help.
