Good Samaritan with a gun stops possible shooter outside restaurant

Customers at the Jack’s Bait Shop in North Naples got the scare of their life when one man tried to wreak havoc outside.

If it wasn’t for Good Samaritan, named Tom, standing by, an evening out could have turned into someone’s worse nightmare.

“You wonder, is this ever going to happen to me, and it did,” Tom said.

According to witnesses, what Tom did may have prevented a tragedy.

“I pulled into Jack’s, just walked in to grab a beer. Walked outside to sit down, and there was a table of ladies to the right of me,” Tom said. “Almost immediately, this black Lincoln pulled up with all dark windows and he did a hell of a burnout.”

Tom says what happened next was a blur.

Tom says a man, who deputies later identified and arrested as Keith Zavattaro, 55, of Naples, drove back to the front of the building, stopped and then slowly rolled down his window to then point what looked like a gun.

“So I got behind the cement pillar and showed my pistol, and he took off out of there really quick,” Tom said.

According to the arrest report, other people outside also saw the gun.

Zavattaro, a regular to Jack’s Bait Shop, was just kicked out of the bar for causing problems earlier that day.

Investigators say Zavattaro gave deputies a hard time when they tried to arrest him at his house by hitting and kicking them.

Deputies say they couldn’t find a gun in his car, but Zavattaro will face charges of battery on a law enforcement officer.

“I just know it is a crazy world,” Tom said. “You never figure it’s going to happen to you, but it happened last night.”

Homeowner shoots pit bull who mauled and killed family pet in Oak Cliff

One of the dogs ran off when the family ran outside to save Rocky. The other pit bull clenched its teeth around Rocky's neck, dragging him. They say the dog wouldn't let go.

It is a painful week for a group of family members who watched their beloved little dog die a violent death. A couple of loose pit bulls invaded the family’s back yard, killing a poodle-mix named Rocky.

“My dad saw the dog and he started, you know, banging on the dog to see if it would let it go…” Nayleen Flores said.

It is the latest dog attack in southern Dallas. Flores says her family is devastated, after two loose and healthy looking pit bulls mauled and killed her family pet. Rocky belonged to Flores’ three-year old nephew.

"My dad’s first instinct was to save Rocky,” Flores said as she detailed how the family sprung into action. “He grabbed a metal rod and just started hitting it.”

The family says it is likely the pit bulls squeezed under the fence. One of the dogs ran off when the family ran outside to save Rocky. The other pit bull clenched its teeth around Rocky’s neck, dragging him. They say the dog wouldn’t let go.

"My cousin turned a hose on and started dousing it,” Flores said. “It still wouldn’t work. In the end my mom was like, get the gun, you’ve got to save Rocky.”

The teen’s dad shot and killed the pit bull. The only thing they have to remember Rocky by, right now, is his collar and some photos.

Workers with Dallas Animal Services say they’ve been aggressively tackling issues involving loose and dangerous dogs.

"We realize, for sure, that it is an owned dog problem,” said Ann Barnes, a Field Services Manager with Dallas Animal Services.

Pet owners are being reminded the City of Dallas recently passed new ordinances created to hold irresponsible dog owners accountable.

"If your dog is not restrained, and it bites somebody or harms another animal, there is a criminal offense now with the new ordinances," Barnes said.

The Flores family says investigators told them they would be checking the dead pit bull for a chip to possibly identify its owner.

For now, the family is still trying to figure out how to tell a three-year-old little boy he will not be able to hug his best friend Rocky again.

Would-be robbery victim calls 911, reports he shot suspect in Dayton

A 23-year-old man who shot another man multiple times tonight told police he shot his would-be robber.

Police were called at 7:30 p.m. to the Marathon gas station and convenience store at 119 N. James H. McGee Blvd. in Dayton.

The 911 caller said the other man, who also was armed, fled in a blue Chevrolet Cruze, but not before he dropped his gun, according to the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center.

The shooting victim, a 22-year-old man, was shot multiple times, Dayton police Lt. Steven Bauer said.

A worker said the incident happened at one of the gas pumps.

The gunshot victim was found inside his car a short distance away, on Home Avenue near U.S. 35 and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, the lieutenant said.

Yellow crime scene tape surrounded the parking lot, and the shooter was in back of a cruiser while police investigated and the Marathon station and Subway restaurant inside were closed.

Bauer said two weapons were recovered, and that police are trying to determine exactly what happened.

“There was clearly some type of confrontation. What stemmed it or what caused it is what were still investigating,” Bauer said.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An unidentified teen tried to take a 79-year-old woman's car at gunpoint Tuesday in Cleveland's Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood, police said.

The woman was not harmed in the attempted carjacking that happened just before 3 p.m. on East 71st Street near Harvard Avenue, according to a police report.

No arrests have been made in the case, the report says.

The woman had just arrived home in her brown 2000 Chevrolet Malibu when the teen, who appeared to be roughly 17 years old, approached her car and opened a door.

The teen pointed a gun at the woman and said "get out, I'm taking your car," the report says.

The woman's grandson was in her house and saw the attempted carjacking through a window. The grandson grabbed his own gun, ran outside and told the teen to leave his grandmother alone, the report says.

The teen ran away toward Harvard Avenue. Several other males followed him, the grandson told police.

A store owner fatally shot a burglary suspect Wednesday morning following a confrontation, Des Moines police say.

Police were called to Kraft 5 Star Muffler on Army Post Road on a report of a burglary around 7:15 a.m. En route, officers learned the burglary suspect was shot by the store owner. On arrival, they found a man’s body, according to police.

There was a confrontation between the burglary suspect and the business owner and the owner shot him, Des Moines police spokesman Sgt. Paul Parizek said.

The burglary suspect had driven up to the business in an out-of-state stolen truck and was loading items from Kraft 5 Star Muffler, Parizek said. When the owner came in for work, he found the suspect. Instead of fleeing, the man confronted the store owner, Parizek said.

Parizek said at first blush, “it certainly looks like Stand Your Ground” will be applied in the case, but the county attorney will decide.

Polk County Attorney John Sarcone said his office will wait until the police department finishes their investigation before deciding whether or not to file charges.

Parizek didn't know if the burglar was armed. No one has been arrested. The store owner was not injured.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — A retired police officer stopped a gunman who police said fired at random people during a multi-county crime spree.

On July 2, police pursued 29-year-old Austin Benson after receiving a report that he stole a vehicle, KOAA reported. Authorities said Benson was shooting at random vehicles during the pursuit, according to KUSA.

Benson eventually drove onto an occupied campsite and started yelling, police said. A family drove by to check on Benson when witnesses said Benson fired a round at them.

According to an affidavit, a retired officer from Alabama, 51-year-old Wesley Mattox, said he was camping with his wife when he heard Benson yelling.

When Mattox approached Benson, the suspect reportedly told him “to get him water and that the law was after him.” Benson had a rifle in his hand and pointed it at the retired officer, the affidavit stated.

Mattox then gave his wife a gun and told her to take cover before taking out an AR-15 and ordering Benson to drop his weapon. Benson drove away and started shooting at Mattox, who returned fire.

The affidavit said Benson eventually crashed into a tree. The retired officer told deputies that after he thought his used all of his ammunition for his rifle, he pulled out a second AR-15 out of his truck and fired one more shot to see of Benson would react since he didn’t see any movement from him after the crash.

Manitou Springs police officers arrived at the scene and investigated the incident. Police said Benson was shot “several times” in the arm and face but survived.

Benson faces several charges, including six charges for attempted first-degree murder. Deputies said they initially thought Benson stole the vehicle he was driving, but later learned he had permission to drive it.

Police said no one else was injured during the incident.

Crawford County Prosecuting Attorney releases statement regarding Sulphur investigation

The Crawford County Prosecuting Attorney released more details regarding the shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon in Sulphur.

According to Prosecuting Attorney Nicholas Haverstock, Gregory R. Peals, 29, of Louisville, shot Ricky L. Phipps, 28, of Magnet, with a gun belonging to the homeowner of the home where they were located at on Easy Street.

Phipps ran into Olives’ residence and told Olives he had been shot by Peals. Olives then allegedly took another gun, walked out of the home and shot Peals subsequently killing him.

Police were notified of the shooting at about 2 p.m.

According to Haverstock, who expressed dissatisfaction with the media during a video on Facebook, the investigation is still underway and more details may be released later.

He reiterated that at no time was the public in danger during the investigation due to the incident. He added that the Indiana State Police were the sole law enforcement entity involved in the shooting; Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was not handling the investigation.

Joplin resident fires shot during reported break-in attempt

Police responded to a report of a burglary with shots fired early Wednesday morning in the 4100 block of South Pennsylvania Avenue in Joplin.

Jeremy J. Angel, 24, told police that he heard someone breaking into the back of his home about 6 a.m. and grabbed his rifle.

Police Capt. Trevor Duncan said Angel told police that he fired a single shot in an effort to ward off any intruder. Since he was uncertain if anyone was still in his home or not, police performed a sweep of the residence without finding anyone still there, Duncan said.

Officers subsequently determined that the shot Angel fired traveled out of his house and passed through the foundation of the house next door into a crawlspace. Nothing was reported stolen from the residence, Duncan said.

Ride-share driver shoots at 2 carjackers on NW Side, police say

CHICAGO — A ride-share driver fired shots at two carjackers on the Northwest Side shortly before his car was stolen early Friday, police said.

The incident happened about 4:50 a.m. Friday in the 7400 block of West Belmont Avenue.

A 23-year-old driver picked up two passengers who began to beat the driver while attempting to take his car, according to the Chicago Police Department.

That’s when the driver, who has a concealed carry license, pulled out a gun. The attackers got out of the car and ran away, police said. The driver chased the duo and fired several shots, but no one was hurt.

At that point, police said, one of the attackers jumped back into the car and drove away. The victim grabbed his car and was dragged for a brief time — but the carjacker ultimately escaped.

Police located the car abandoned a short while later.

No one was in custody.

The ride-sharing driver was taken to a local hospital in good condition.

- A customer allegedly fired shots at a suspect who was robbing a business overnight just outside of uptown Charlotte, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

The robbery happened at 1:04 a.m. Friday, July 13 at the Circle K located at 701 N Graham.

Police said a man entered the store and robbed the business. According to witnesses, a customer inside the store during the robbery ran outside while the suspect was still inside.

Once the suspect came outside, the customer fired the shots, witnesses told police. The customer then left the scene and the robbery suspect has not been located at this time, police said.

This remains an open and active investigation.
