Devil's Head camper shoots carjacking suspect out of El Paso County

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - A camper in Colorado shot a man suspected of stealing a vehicle in El Paso County on Monday.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office put out a tweet at about 2:25 p.m. stating authorities were searching for a man in his twenties or thirties driving a small blue car. The sheriff's office said he could be armed with a shotgun or rifle and was considered armed and dangerous.

The carjacking reportedly happened along Rampart Range Road, a specific location was not provided. According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the 29-year-old suspect drove the stolen vehicle to Devil's Head Campground.

Armed with a rifle, the suspect approached an unsuspecting camper. The sheriff's office says a confrontation ensued and the camper shot the suspect multiple times. The suspect was taken to the hospital. The suspect was last reported in stable condition.

The suspect will face charges out of Douglas County and will also have charges out of El Paso County. Douglas County charges will be determined after consulting with the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office but likely will include attempted murder and felony menacing.

All campsites from Devil's Head will be closed for about two days as the investigation continues. The suspect's identity was not released to the public at the time this article was written.

Felon sentenced to prison after home break-in

    Kyler Thompson
A man with a lengthy criminal history has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to breaking into a Greenwood home last year.

Kyler Thompson, 47, of Indianapolis, pleaded guilty to a felony count of burglary and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Thompson has multiple past convictions, including theft, auto theft, criminal trespass and intimidation, and had previously served more than four years in prison.

With his most recent sentence, Thompson is eligible to participate in the Purposeful Incarceration program, geared toward inmates with addiction problems, which Thompson clearly has, his attorney Matt Solomon said.

Thompson was arrested last year after a homeowner on North Madison Avenue in Greenwood heard breaking glass and found Thompson, who the resident did not know, in a bedroom of the home.

When police arrived, Thompson was lying on the ground with the resident pointing his gun at him. Next to Thompson, police found cash, a radio, a cellphone and pliers, which were missing from the home Thompson was found in.

Thompson told police that he was swimming with a friend next door, and the friend had run into the neighbor’s house and he went after him.

The neighbor told police she did not know Thompson and did not give him permission to swim in her pool, which is surrounded by a fence. Thompson also told police the friend with him had thrown the cash on the ground. No other person was found.

Thompson was also arrested last year on a possession of a handgun by a felon charge in Marion County, and theft charges in Hamilton County. His sentence in the local case would be served after any sentence in those cases, according to court records.

His earliest release date would be in 2025, according to the Indiana Department of Correction.

If Thompson successfully completes the Purposeful Incarceration program and has good behavior in prison, he could ask for his sentence to be reduced, Solomon said.

Off-duty officer shot, shoots 'intruder' in northwest Wichita
Officer is OK, suspect was in critical condition

    Jake Bowles
WICHITA, Kan. - An off-duty police officer was shot in his own home early Tuesday morning in northwest Wichita. The officer is expected to survive, and the suspect was in critical condition.

Police Chief Gordon Ramsay said an "intruder" entered the officer's home near 21st and Maize Road around 3:30 a.m.

"The two had engaged in a gun battle," Chief Ramsay said. "Both the suspect and the off-duty officer were shot."

Chief Ramsay said the officer was shot in the leg and is expected to be okay. The 24-year-old suspect was shot multiple times and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Ramsay said police do not believe there is any connection between the suspect and the officer.

"We're still putting the pieces of this together," Ramsay said. "There is no relationship between the two. It doesn't appear that they know each other." Ramsay said it looks like "a case of an intruder in the home."

The officer's wife and two children were home when the shootout happened, and Ramsay said they were safe but "very shaken."

Ramsay said the officer was in good spirits as he went into surgery.

Police were collecting evidence and talking to neighbors or other witnesses to try to find out if the shooting was targeted or random.

Sheriff honors woman who fired her gun to help save deputy’s life
Written by Joseph Witham July 2, 2018

Mohave County Sheriff Doug Schuster presents a "Lifesaving Award" to Sherry King in Kingman, Ariz., July 2, 2018 | Photo courtesy of Mohave County Sheriff's Office, St. George News

ST. GEORGE — “I saw a deputy was in trouble, and I just acted,” said 70-year-old Sherry King, the woman who courageously intervened in a potentially life-threatening struggle between an officer and a suspect in Beaver Dam, Arizona, earlier this year.

King was presented with a “Lifesaving Award” by Mohave County Sheriff Doug Schuster in Kingman, Arizona, Monday for her role in helping stop a man who was allegedly trying to pull a gun from a deputy.

The incident triggered a multiagency manhunt after the suspect, 34-year-old Darren Bruce Boone, fled the scene when King fired a warning shot into the air.

“If he had got the deputy’s gun, there would be somebody dead,” King told St. George News.

Mohave County Sheriff’s Office is crediting King with saving the life of deputy Jeff Davis.

King recalled the morning of the incident, April 27, in an interview with St. George News. She was watering the plants outside her business, Little Dam Car Lot, when Boone pulled in to ask her when a nearby body shop would open.

Moments later, Davis pulled into the lot and asked to see Boone’s driver’s license. When Boone became uncooperative, King said the deputy told him he was under arrest.

After the deputy partially cuffed him, King said Boone pushed the deputy away and walked back toward his car. At that point, Davis attempted to deploy his Taser, but Boone allegedly grabbed it from him.

King said Boone’s next move triggered her involvement in the struggle.

“He reached around toward the deputy’s gun, and I just jumped him,” she said.

Boone then shoved her to the ground, King said, at which point she fired a warning shot into the air, which sent the suspect running toward a nearby wash.

King said she wasn’t hurt in the struggle, but she was miffed about one thing. “It got my new shoes dirty, and I was really mad about that,” she said. “Don’t mess with my shoes.”

Boone later turned himself in after a manhunt ensued for his capture. He was charged with aggravated assault on an officer and resisting arrest with physical force, both felonies.

King has since spoken with Davis a few times since the incident. He joined her during Monday’s award ceremony, wherein she received a standing ovation from all present.

While her ability to carry a firearm and use it came in handy that day, King said carrying a gun is not something to be taken lightly.

“My dad was a cop. I grew up on a firing range,” she said, explaining that she was just 7 years old when her father started training her how to use a firearm.

She’s had a concealed carry permit since she was 25 and still practices shooting in the desert near her home.

King said she wouldn’t encourage someone to carry a gun unless they have experience, training and have completed gun safety courses.

Two brothers identified in Arkansas homicide; no charges filed by investigators in shooting

The Pulaski County sheriff’s office identified the brothers involved in a Saturday night homicide in Hensley and said no charges have been filed in the shooting.

Agency spokesman Lt. Cody Burk said deputies arrived on the scene Saturday evening and found William Hooks, 43, on the ground with a gunshot wound in his upper torso near a residence in the 5200 block of West Hensley Road.

Hooks had no pulse and was not breathing when deputies arrived, Burk said.

Hooks’ brother, John Hooks, 51, was on the scene and surrendered to the deputies, Burk said.

The two men reportedly had an argument that escalated to violence.

Though investigators know who pulled the trigger, Burk said witness testimony indicates that the shooting may have been in self-defense.

“We have enough reason to believe it could be justifiable,” Burk said. “We’re going to let the prosecuting attorney review our findings.”

Investigators did not charge John Hooks in the death of his brother, and Burk said the prosecuting attorney’s office will determine if any charges will be filed.

I’m not sure but it sounds like the threat of getting a gun is what caused this guy to stop trying to get into the house.

Police searching for suspect after man in underwear allegedly attempts break-in at Rochester Hills home
By Stephen Frye, The Oakland PressUpdated: 24 secs ago

Police are investigating after a man wearing only boxer shorts reportedly tried to break into a Rochester Hills home.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at 6:24 a.m. on July 1 in the 900 block of Majestic.

Homeowners told police that a white man wearing only boxer shorts was reportedly trying to break through a glass pane on a rear door to the home.

According to the report, residents in the home were yelling at the subject to leave and were holding the door to prevent the man from opening it. One resident reportedly opened a second story window above the suspect and told him that they were getting their gun.

The residents told police that the suspect ran toward the front the home and tried to open the door of a 2018 Porsche Macan, which was parked in the street in front of the house. The car was locked and the suspect fled the area on foot
    .

The OCSO K-9 unit established a track which was later terminated due to losing the scent.

Deputies found that the Porsche parked in front of the home did not belong to any of the neighbors in close proximity to where it was parked. The license plate was registered to a Birmingham car dealer, who told police that the car had been loaned to a subject who had brought his Porsche in for repair.

The vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

According to police, detectives are looking for an Auburn Hills man, 27, as a suspect in the incident. Detectives will continue to investigate.

Crazy’ Attack - FLA Says Man Shot Was Wrong Attempting To Disarm Firearm Holder

“Something crazy” is how Cleveland Crooks, director of compliance and enforcement at the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA), has described the actions of a security guard who on Monday was shot and injured while trying to disarm a licensed firearm holder.

Crooks determined from preliminary investigations that the guard was wrong and pointed out that other security personnel from KingAlarm who eventually took the firearm away from the man appeared to physically abuse him. The guard who was shot was not affiliated with KingAlarm.

Videos have been circulating on social media. I saw a gentleman in a suit standing in what seems to be an apartment complex. He was approached by another man who attacked him and seemed to be trying [to pull his concealed firearm] from his waistband. However, he held on safely to his firearm, but while they were on the ground struggling, a shot was fired,” recounted Crooks.

In a case like this, his life was threatened. He is a licensed firearm holder, attacked from behind. As a firearm holder, there is an important thing called retention of firearm. No one should attack an individual like that. The attacker did something crazy,” Crooks declared yesterday.

He continued: “From what I have seen, the other security personnel acted out of the scope of their responsibility. They should have calmed the situation, then called the police. What I saw was a gentleman being forced to the ground, being clearly abused and his gun taken away.”

The FLA said that it would continue interviewing persons who may be able to help with the investigation.

Dahlia Garrick, acting superintendent of police in charge of the Corporate Communications Unit, told The Gleaner yesterday that investigations were ongoing into the matter. However, the police were not yet sure if charges would be laid against anyone.

“This is being investigated, but it is too early to give a comprehensive report. Statements are being collected, but given the number of players in the incident, we have to get all sides of the story,” she said.

The armed guards accused of assaulting and disarming the man are employees of the KingAlarm security company.

Managing Director of KingAlarm John Azar issued a statement yesterday explaining that the personnel representing his company who were seen in the video had been removed from active duty.

“Without benefit of a thorough investigation into what transpired, I have seen enough on social media to cause me concern, relating to the actions of some individuals at the scene. As such, all KingAlarm personnel who were present have been pulled from duty, pending the outcome of investigations by ourselves, the police and other authorities,” said Azar.

“I have personally reached out to the firearm holder in the video and expressed my concerns directly to him. Wherever our personnel are found to have acted in contravention of the law, or inconsistent with their training, or in violation of human rights, there are serious and severe consequences,” he said.

Man shot with pellet gun during attempted home invasion in Yakima

YAKIMA, Wash. – The Yakima Police Department is investigating an attempted home invasion Wednesday afternoon in the 300 block of South Sixth Street that ended with the alleged intruder being shot with a pellet gun.

At around 4:30 p.m., a man, who appeared to be in his 20s, threatened a woman who lived in the house, Lt. Shawn Boyle said. The woman, who looked to be in her 60s, was familiar with the man. But she refused to let the man on the property.

The man threatened to stab the woman then attempted to climb over the fence of the property, Boyle said. The woman’s grandson then shot the man with a pellet gun.

The man was sent to a local hospital but the injury was not life-threatening, Boyle said. Both the alleged intruder and the grandson were detained for investigation Wednesday afternoon, Boyle said.
