Bad Guy with Knife Stopped by Good Guy with AR-15

A man armed with an AR-15 saved a neighbor who was being attacked with a knife Monday in Oswego Township, Illinois.

WGN 9 reports that the incident unfolded at an apartment complex on Harbor Drive, “when someone with a knife attacked another person during an argument.”

Dave Thomas (pictured) witnessed the attack on his neighbor, retrieved his AR-15, and ordered the attacker to stop.

Thomas said, “I poked my head out the door. There was a pool of blood, blood was everywhere in the hall. There was still a confrontation going on, there were about three or four people involved at this point. So I ran back into my house and grabbed my AR-15. I grabbed the AR-15 over my handgun — bigger gun, I think a little more of an intimidation factor. Definitely played a part in him actually stopping.”

Police arrived and arrested the suspect, while the victim was taken to the hospital in an unknown condition.

Thomas gave a statement afterward, saying, “The AR-15 is my weapon of choice for home protection. It’s light, it’s maneuverable. If you train and know how to use it properly, it’s not dangerous. And this is just a perfect example of good guy with an AR-15 stopped a bad guy with a knife. And there were no lives taken, so all in all it was a good day.”

    Hesperia homeowner shoots burglary suspect
    HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) --
A homeowner shot a man who was allegedly trying to break into his Hesperia home Thursday night, and the intruder is now in critical condition.

Hesperia deputies responded to reports of a burglary in progress on Ponderosa Avenue near Chestnut Street around 10:30 p.m.

Responding deputies found the suspect, 36-year-old Michael Goode, down on the front yard of the home and suffering from a gunshot wound.

The suspect tried to gain entry through the front window of the house. The homeowner armed himself when he heard the break-in occurring, and as the suspect tried to enter the residence, the victim fired his weapon, police said.

The homeowner was not hurt. Goode was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

"As long as you protect your family and yourself, I don't see anything wrong with it," said neighbor Jesus Mejia, who also said the homeowner is a Vietnam veteran.

He said the gunshot sounded like an explosion. He went outside to see what was going on and found the intruder on the ground in front of his neighbor's home, asking for help.

Goode was arrested for a parole violation two months ago and was let out of jail four days ago. He'll likely be back behind bars if he survives, authorities said.

As for the homeowner, it appears he will not be facing charges.

"We're glad when any homeowner protects themselves, that's what they need to do in these situations," said Hesperia Police Sgt. Marc Bracco. "That's why you're allowed to carry a firearm in your residence."

Police said the incident was one of two involving an intruder and an armed resident in the area that night.

KCSO: Man shoots teen burglar during overnight backyard confrontation
    BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) —
    by BakersfieldNow staff

    Thursday, March 22nd 2018

Kern County deputies investigate a shooting a home on Webster Street in east Bakersfield, Calif., early Thursday, March 22, 2018. (KBAK/KBFX photo)

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said a resident shot a teenage burglar overnight after the teen tried to stab the man.

Deputies were sent around 2:20 a.m. to the 1100 block of Webster Street, near Niles and Mt. Vernon.

When deputies arrived, the resident, a man, was holding the suspect, a 17-year-old boy, at gunpoint. The resident put his gun away as deputies approached.

The Sheriff's Office determined the resident confronted the teen about breaking into his backyard shed. That's when the teen allegedly tried to stab the resident, and the resident responded by shooting the teen in the leg.

The Sheriff's Office said the teen will get medical care before being booked into Juvenile Hall.

The resident appears to have acted in self-defense and won't be arrested, the Sheriff's Office said.

Man opens fire on home in Alaska village, resident shoots him in the leg
    Leroy PolkTue 8:31 AM, Mar 20, 2018

ALAKANUK, Alaska (KTUU) - An exchange of gunfire ended in an arrest last weekend in the small Alaska village of Alakanuk.

According to the Alaska State Troopers, who responded to the scene via the Emmonak field office, the shootout began with a man firing rounds into a home in the village.

52-year-old Leroy Patrick allegedly went to a home in Alakanuk some time around 2 a.m. on March 17.

With him, Patrick carried a semi-automatic rifle, which he used to fire a round into the house.

Inside the home was a family of three people, including an 18-month-old baby. Troopers did not say what Patrick's motivation in opening fire was, but did comment that "alcohol was a factor" in the incident.

Patrick allegedly shot one round into the home from the outside, then went into an enclosed porch area, and fired "multiple rounds through the front door while shouting at the occupants."

It was at this point that one of the family members inside "was able to grab a shotgun and while on the floor, fired one round through the door" which hit Patrick in the leg, effectively ending the shootout, troopers said in their report.

The man inside was reportedly struck by bullet fragments, receiving injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.

For the shotgun wound to his leg, Patrick was transported to Emmonak where he was treated. After that, he was arrested on multiple assault charges, a burglary charge, and a charge of misconduct with a weapon.

Troopers reported that his bail was set at $150,000, and that he was transported to YKCC in Bethel.

Father shoots, kills suspected home invader | Police call it a justified shooting
Police have identified the suspected home invader who was shot and killed Thursday morning.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - Police are searching for two suspected home invaders after a man shot and killed one of their suspected accomplices early Thursday morning.

At 12:20 a.m., DeKalb police responded to a shooting call on the 1700 block of Thicket Way at the Covington Glen apartments. When they arrived, they found a deceased male, whom police have identified, but not released to the public.

According to police, three men had broken into the victim's apartment where he and his two young children lived.

The father then got into a physical altercation with all three armed suspects but was able to get to his own weapon, shooting and killing one of the suspects, with two women and two little girls inside the apartment ducking for cover.

The other two suspects fled the scene.

No other injuries were reported and police are considering this a justified shooting.

Neighbor James Swift heard the gunfire. He’s glad the father was able to stop at least one of the suspects from hurting his family.

“I'm glad that he met his demise before they meet theirs because he had no business trying to enter into their house,” Swift said. “Ain’t no telling what he would have done to those kids in there. Kids don't deserve that and I know they were frightened.”

JSO: Jacksonville home invasion stopped when resident pulls gun

A pair of "young" suspects were likely forced to escape through a second-story window when a homeowner pulled a gun during a home invasion on Monday, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

A second-story window could be seen broken in the 6300 block of Thumper Road in west Jacksonville.

The suspects forced their way into the home but had to flee when the homeowner shot at them, JSO said. JSO termed the daylight robbery as "very brazen."

At least one of the suspects was wounded and was captured a short distance away at the intersection of Jammes and Harlow.

The suspect was taken to Orange Park Medical Center. The other remains at large, JSO said.

The homeowner doesn't appear to be injured, JSO said.
