Employee shoots Hesperia man during alleged attempted robbery

HESPERIA — Authorities are still investigating an alleged robbery and assault that turned into a shooting at a local business early Friday morning.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials said 37-year-old Hesperia resident Michael Richardson was shot during the incident, which occurred at a business in the 15900 block of Bear Valley Road at 12:08 a.m. Friday.

Officials said Richardson reportedly went to the business and “created a disturbance.” He refused to leave despite being asked to and became physically aggressive, assaulting at least two victims and “demanding property from them” just before an employee reportedly shot him.

“Fearing for his safety and the safety of the others in the business, an employee retrieved a handgun, and several shots were fired,” officials said.

Hesperia Sheriff’s Station deputies responding to the incident found Richardson in a vacant field behind the business suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body, officials said.

Richardson was treated at the scene and flown to a local hospital, while detectives processed the scene and interviewed all witnesses. Officials said Richardson is expected to survive his injuries and, upon his release, will be arrested on suspicion of strong-arm robbery.

An employee who suffered minor injuries from the assault was treated and released at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

All employees and customers inside the business are cooperating with detectives, officials said, and the firearm used during the shooting was recovered at the scene. Further details weren’t available.

Suspected burglar shot dead during home invasion

A burglary suspect died from gunshot wounds Wednesday after an altercation with family members at a Dunnellon-area home.

According to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were responding to a burglary in process at 4:31 p.m. Wednesday on West Dunklin Street when a male suspect, later identified as Zechariah Tackett, 28, of Levy County, was shot.

When deputies arrived, they found Tackett lying on his back outside of the residence, and two males identified as Robert Jones Sr., 54, and Robert Jones Jr., 32, both of Citrus County, standing in the driveway.

Deputies performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Tackett, but he was unresponsive and pronounced dead at 4:51 p.m, the report states.

Major crimes detectives interviewed Robert Jones Sr., who said after receiving a call from his sister about a possible burglary, he and his son — both carrying weapons — responded to the home and found an unknown male in the living room. He said Tackett was shot during that confrontation, the report states.

While deputies were searching the house, they found over a dozen firearms laying on the living room floor and a safe that was cut open. After Tackett's next of kin were notified, detectives discovered Tackett was a suspect in other burglaries in both Citrus and Marion counties. Detectives are continuing their investigation and will release more information when the case is closed.

An Angola woman attacked by a raccoon who entered her home through a cat door faces a complete series of rabies shots after the raccoon tested positive for rabies.

Christine King had already received a dozen shots before the test confirmed the shots were necessary. Her husband, Bruce King, said state officials informed the couple Jan.12 the raccoon was rabid.

In an interview Jan. 11, Christine King said she and her husband could laugh about the early morning hours of Jan. 10, when she was attacked in her home by a raccoon.

“It was quite the scene,” she said, chuckling. “Me screaming and my husband standing there naked with no glasses, shooting his gun.”

Bruce chimes in, “It was a big coon – 30 inches. I knew not to shoot it in the head because that’s how they test for rabies.”

The Kings, who live off Camp Arrowhead Road in Angola, have four cats, and they have a back entrance cat door so the cats can come and go. Bruce said raccoons have entered the cat door before, but this was the first time a raccoon went past the food bowls.

“I used to hunt,” Bruce said. “Now, I only kill things that attack us.”

Christine said she thought a cat was causing the ruckus in her bedroom, and when she got out of bed to see what it was, the raccoon attacked her.

“At first I thought one of my cats was going crazy, but then I looked down and saw it was a damn raccoon,” she said. The electric furnace at the foot of her bed and the wooden floor just to the right have the bullet marks to prove the story.

This is the second time in a month a person in the Cape Region has been bitten by a raccoon.

In mid-December, public health officials confirmed a raccoon bit a homeowner who was hanging up decorations in Kings Creek. That raccoon tested positive for rabies. At the time, Jen Brestel, community relations officer for the Division of Public Health, said the raccoon was hiding in some bushes when the homeowner in the Rehoboth Beach community was bit Dec. 9.

According to the Division of Public Health, only mammals carry rabies and the most common carrier of the disease in Delaware is the raccoon. A public health pamphlet defines rabies as a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system – brain and spinal cord.

The pamphlet also says exposure to a rabid animal does not always result in rabies, but if rabies exposure is not treated and a person develops clinical signs of rabies, the disease is always considered to be fatal.

“If treatment is initiated promptly following a rabies exposure, rabies can be prevented,” the pamphlet states.

Bruce said state officials notified him Jan. 12 that the raccoon was rabid. He said he wanted to get the message out for people to be on the watch.

Bruce also commended the professionalism of the emergency service personnel who helped them.

“From the 911 call, to the ambulance drivers to the emergency room doctors, their professionalism was outstanding,” he said.

Christine said it’s easy for Bruce to say that because he wasn’t the person getting shots in both arms, both buttocks and in the open wounds by two people at the same time. “I was squeezing his hand so hard it hurt,” she said, again laughing. “If I’m going to be in that much pain, so is he.”

Christine said she’s scheduled for another shot Saturday, Jan. 13, and then two more the following week.

In a Jan. 11 email, Brestel said since Jan. 1, health department officials have performed rabies tests on four animals, three of which were negative for rabies, and one result is pending. “DPH only announces lab-confirmed positive rabies cases in which it is possible the animal had unknown contacts with humans and there is risk of exposure to the community,” she said.

Anyone who thinks they might have been bitten, scratched or come in contact with a raccoon should immediately contact their healthcare provider or call the DPH Rabies Program at 302-744-4995. An epidemiologist is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Also anyone who thinks their pet may have been bitten by this raccoon should call their private veterinarian or the Delaware Department of Agriculture at 302-698-4630.

MORNING VIEW, Ky. (WKRC) - A shooting in rural Kenton County is shaping up as a family tragedy.

Twenty-four-year-old Collin Thomas Huff was shot and killed at home by his father, and neighbors are saying it was in self-defense.

The peace and quiet of rural Kenton County was broken Wednesday night on Decoursey Pike. Kenton County Police found Huff dead of a gunshot wound to the face. His father, Ron Huff, was in handcuffs at the crime scene Wednesday night but has not been charged with anything.

Neighbor Margie Collins says she spoke to Ron Huff Thursday morning. He told her Collin was under the influence Wednesday night and an argument turned violent.

"He said, 'Margie, I had to kill my only son,' and he was crying," Margie said. "And he said it was that dope and he wasn't Collin no more. And said he threatened [him] with either a hammer or a hatchet. I'm so upset, I can't remember what he said."

Kenton County Police are investigating. They would not confirm any details of what happened in the house. They plan to talk with Ron Huff more Thursday.

An autopsy will be performed on Collin Huff's body Friday. So far, no one has been charged with any crime.

Margie says Collin Huff sat at her kitchen table less than one week ago. She says he was a great kid and got along well with his father until a drug arrest in December.

"I love the man and respect him, and shooting his only son was not his fault," Margie said.

The police will ultimately decide if this family tragedy is self-defense, murder or something else.

The Kenton County coroner says Collin Huff's autopsy will be done by the state medical examiner's office in Frankfort.

Tamarac homeowner shot and killed man trying break his car, deputies say

TAMARAC, Fla. - A man trying to steal from cars in Tarmarac was shot and killed Saturday morning after a homeowner confronted him, authorities said.

Keyla Concepcion, a spokeswoman for the Broward County Sheriff's Office, said the homeowner was walking his dog around 5 a.m. when he saw a man trying to break into his car in the 9500 block of Northwest 82nd Court.

Homeowner and the suspect got into a fight, which ended with the homeowner shooting the man, Concepcion said.

The victim was rushed to Broward Health North, but later died of his injuries, Concepcion said.

Deputies: Man killed by homeowner after apparent home invasion

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- UPDATE 1/13/18 @ 8:55 a.m.
A man is dead after an apparent home invasion in Kanawha County overnight.

Deputies with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office tell WSAZ that in the early morning hours Saturday, an 82-year-old man was working in his garage.

A 24-year-old man allegedly broke into the garage through a window and threatened the homeowner.

The homeowner shot the intruder, according to deputies, killing him.

It happened in the 200 block of Destiny Lane.

Detectives are on scene investigating collecting evidence and conducting interviews.

Investigators are not releasing names at this time. No charges are expected to be filed against the homeowner.

Hijacker shot dead in Durban

Durban - A hijacker was shot dead and two accomplices arrested following a shoot out during an attempted hijacking in Esselen Cresent in Phoenix on Friday evening.

Police spokesperson, Major General Thulani Zwane, said four men, driving a Hyundai Accent, had attempted to hijack a man of his VW Polo at around 21:00.

"Members of the neighbourhood watch confronted the hijackers who shot at the civilians. The civilians returned fire and the highjackers drove away at high speed and crashed into a fence about 200 metres down the road," he said.

Zwane said the driver had died on the scene.

"Two suspects were arrested in the vehicle while the fourth suspect fled," he said.

He said the two arrested men were being guarded in hospital, as they had been injured in the crash.

Zwane said the Accent that the men were driving had been hijacked nearby on Tuesday, in Avelen Crescent.

Man Dead, Woman Injured After Fort Worth Grocery Store Shooting

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – A man is dead and a woman hospitalized after a robbery at a supermarket in Fort Worth.

Police have identified the man killed as 26-year-old Raymond Huerta, of Fort Worth. The 26-year-old was killed trying to stop the robbery and protect the woman who witnesses say is his wife.

The shooting happened at the Save-A-Lot grocery store on James Avenue near Interstate-20.

According to police, they found Huerta dead “on the floor of the business” when they arrived.

A witness who spoke with CBS 11 News said he and a friend were at a home across the street from the grocery store when two men approached them. He said they both feared they were about to be robbed so his friend pulled out a gun and the suspects raw away.

A short time later he said he heard gunshots, ran over to the store and found a man shot in the head and a woman who looked as if she’d been beaten on the head and face with a gun.

An assistant store manager said two women were working at the store at the time of the robbery and that the man killed was the husband of one of those employees. Police say Huerta was concerned about his wife working late at night and was at the store to look out for her.

Fort Worth police have not given a description of the suspects – only that they’re looking for two men. Witnesses say the men may be driving a silver-colored Ford Taurus.

Everett bar employee fatally shoots customer who fired gun in parking lot

An Everett bar employee early Saturday shot and killed a customer who had gotten into an altercation at the bar then went outside and fired gunshots, injuring a patron, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. at a bar in the 13600 block of Highway 99. The Sheriff’s Office said that amid an altercation among customers, a 29-year-old man went to to his car, got a gun and began firing shots in the parking lot, wounding a Lynnwood man. The man, 23, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and is expected to recover, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The bar employee, 28, was armed and shot the suspect, but a news release from the Sheriff’s Office gave no details about that part of the incident.

No arrests have been made and the Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate.

Jury finds Austin man acted in self-defense in fatal shooting

A Travis County jury acquitted an Austin man of murder late Friday, determining that Zachary Payne had killed Alfred Matthews in self-defense. After nine hours of deliberations, the jury also found Payne not guilty of two aggravated assault charges Payne faced in the July 2016 shooting.

Payne testified in his trial, saying he was trying to retrieve a stolen bracelet when he confronted a group of people at Park Plaza apartments in East Austin, and that he pulled out his gun and began shooting only after his life was threatened.

If convicted, Payne faced a possible life sentence in prison.

“It was a very difficult case,” said Ariel Payan, Payne’s defense attorney. “Very difficult to hear all that evidence and see what happened. I think the law was followed by the jury. I think that was a very noble thing they did by acquitting him.”

The theft that led to Matthews’ slaying happened two days before the shooting, on Payne’s 21st birthday. Payne told the jury he fell asleep in his ex-girlfriend’s car after a party and woke up on East Riverside drive without $140, a necklace and the bracelet.

Payne testified that he wasn’t too concerned about the money or the necklace, but that he wanted the bracelet back because it was a gift from his aunt. He had reported the theft to Austin police and had incessantly called the phone of his ex-girlfriend, Marione McCain, with some 200 calls and 80 text messages, because he believed she had taken the items. Payne was eventually told he could have the bracelet back, but that he’d have to get it at the apartments where the shooting later occurred.

Payne said he was scared after receiving three threatening phone calls the night before from two unidentified men.

He got the bracelet back, but the fatal confrontation started after that.

A man who was at the apartment complex, Breaun Justice, testified that he was upset and wanted to fight Payne because Payne had gone to Justice’s grandmother’s house the day before looking for the bracelet. Justice said he felt his family had been disrespected and removed his shirt to fight.

Payne told the jury he believed Matthews, 28, and Justice were the men who threatened him over the phone, and that he thought he was going to be shot himself when Matthews encouraged Justice to “pop” him.

Payne testified that he pulled the gun because Justice reached into his pocket and started to pull out something that resembled a weapon. No evidence came out in trial that Justice had a gun or any other weapon.

Payne fired and struck Matthews twice, first in the arm and then in the back. He missed Justice and McCain, but was charged with aggravated assault for the attempted shooting.

Defense attorney Payan said he thinks the testimony of witnesses to the shooting was the deciding factor in the case.

“They told the jury that they essentially were looking for him and they were going to beat him up, they were going to attack him, for going over to their grandmother’s house the night before,” Payan said. “It was disturbing to hear that. I think the jury found it to be disturbing.”
