Re: Armed citizens making a difference thread.
Seems like I've posted a bunch of bizarre self defense shooting from Houston lately.
Armed home invaders force husband, wife, young kids on floor. Then Dad suddenly turns the tables.
http://www.theblaze.com/news/2017/05...ns-the-tables/
A Houston man was was returning home from work Tuesday night when police said three men ambushed and pistol-whipped him and then forced their way inside his house.
Things got even scarier: the perps ordered the man, his wife and their two children — ages 5 and 6, KTRK-TV reported — on the floor.
The home invaders then grabbed cash, KHOU-TV said — but the thugs’ plan was foiled when Dad grabbed his gun and opened fire.
They fired back but quickly high-tailed it out of the house and into a truck, which police found filled with bullet holes, KTRK said.
One suspect was shot in the head, the station said, while the other two are still at large.
Cops found the truck at an apartment complex a few miles from the house, KHOU reported.
The suspect, who was shot, was in critical condition at a hospital, KHOU reported, and is expected to survive.
Police told the Patch that the homeowner and his family were not injured.

OREM — A man shot and killed after allegedly breaking into another man's apartment and attacking him was speaking "gibberish" and appeared to be under the influence of something, according to recently unsealed search warrants.
Jackson Jacques Woodward, 22, of Provo was shot on Dec. 22 after police say he forced his way into an apartment, 1080 N. State. Police at the time said they were looking at the incident as a possible case of self-defense. No arrests were made.
Woodward twice tried to go into the apartment of Joe Pethel. The mother and brother of Pethel lived in an apartment next door and she called police when she heard yelling, the warrants filed in 4th District Court state.
When the brother entered Pethel's apartment, Pethel had a gun pointed at Woodward, the warrant states. Woodward was speaking "gibberish," the brothers later told police.
Initially, Woodward obeyed their commands to get on the ground.
"The male then tried getting into a mid-sized cardboard box that was underneath a desk," the warrant states. "The ... male then began to scream. (The brother) stated that the male got up and ran towards Joe, and grabbed ahold of him.
"(The brother) stated the male and Joe briefly wrestled and Joe fired his handgun, striking the male in the chest. The male was pronounced dead shortly after."
The Utah County Attorney's Office is expected to review the case to determine whether any charges should be filed. As of Thursday, no charges had been filed.[/SIZE]

Would-be robber shot in chest by woman, 65, after he followed her home
http://manchesterinklink.com/would-b...owed-her-home/
MANCHESTER, NH — Manchester Police arrested a would-be robber who was shot Jan 4 outside an apartment building on South Porter Street. Police say Michael Bontaites was shot by his intended victim, a 65-year-old woman, who told Bontaites followed her home from a local gas station where she stopped briefly after work.
⇒RELATED STORY: 1 arrested, 2 more wanted in connection with Jan. 4 self-defense shooting
Bontaites, 23, who has no fixed address, was shot in the chest by the woman, whose identity was not released by police. Bontaites sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest.
The 65-year-old woman who was Bontaites’ alleged intended victim, told police she had stopped at Mobil on the Run, 1050 South Willow St., around 11:30 p.m. after leaving work. She got back on South Willow Street and stopped at a traffic light when she noticed a dark-colored sedan behind her. She told police she had “heightened concern” as the vehicle followed her into her apartment complex parking lot at 640 South Porter St.
The woman entered her apartment complex and noticed multiple vacant parking spots, so she parked as close to her building as possible hoping the other vehicle would vacate the area. Instead, the sedan parked close to her. She exited her vehicle and walked toward her apartment building. She immediately heard a vehicle door close and the sound of a person quickly walking up behind her. She turned and saw a white male with a dark hooded sweatshirt who quickly approached her from behind before running past her and blocking her path. Bontaites reached out and allegedly attempted to grab the woman who, at this point, drew her hand gun from her pocket and shot Bontaites once in the chest at close range.
The woman, who is described as 4-foot-11 inches tall and 105 pounds, was in fear for her safety, police said, so she drew her concealed handgun and shot Bontaites in the upper chest.
The woman, who has a valid concealed carry gun permit, fired one round to stop the attack before seeking a safe zone inside of the building. Bontaites, who is 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds, fell to the ground as she ran into the secured building and contacted the Manchester Police Department through the emergency 911 phone line.
A female occupant of the dark colored sedan picked up Bontaites off the ground and placed him in the car. As the 911 call was being dispatched to on-duty personnel, another Manchester Police Officer located and identified Bontaites as he entered the Elliot Hospital emergency department. Bontaites was treated for a gunshot wound to the chest.
Detectives charged Bontaites with Robbery, a felony, early Tuesday afternoon.
He was charged and arraigned at the Elliot Hospital at approximately 12:30 p.m. Bontaites bail was set at $5,000.00 cash/surety. He is scheduled to appear in the 9th Circuit Court-Manchester on January 14, 2016.
Detectives are actively investigating the incident to determine if the additional occupants of the sedan will face criminal charges. Therefore, no additional information will be provided at this time.

Fourth arrest in connection with Jan. 4 self-defense shooting
MANCHESTER, NH – Amanda Gurley, 26, was arrested Jan. 12 at about 2:15 a.m. in the area of Chestnut and Central streets, the fourth person to be arrested in connection with the Jan. 4 shooting incident in which a 65-year-old woman used her handgun to thwart an attempted robbery.
Police spotted her while on patrol and made the arrest without incident.
In addition to Gurley, three others have been arrested in connection with the shooting, charged as co-conspirators to the robbery – Julie Lambert, Zack Boyd and Michael Bontaites.
Bontaites suffered a serious gunshot wound on Jan. 4 after the victim told police she was followed to her apartment complex by a car and one of the occupants got out of the car and attempted to block her path. Bontaites was arrested at the scene and transported to a hospital for treatment.
Boyd was arrested Jan. 4. Warrants were issued by police for Lambert and Gurley. Lambert turned herself in on Jan. 10.
Gurley was arraigned on Tuesday. Bontatites and Boyd are scheduled for a probable cause hearing on January 14. Lambert is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on January 25, police said.

Mansfield PD: Man pulls out gun at busy park in self-defense
http://www.fox4news.com/news/257935646-story
MANSFIELD, Texas - A short video of a man pulling a gun in a Mansfield park around other families, at first glance, makes him look like the aggressor. But police say it was the other way around.
Mansfield police say what is not seen before the alarming moment on Memorial Day is the man with the gun being attacked. They said as a gun owner with a license to carry, he was only defending himself.
The popular Rose Park was filled with plenty of kids in the playground area on Monday when a man pulled a gun in what police are calling self-defense.
It’s one Memorial Day Sergio Benitez says he won’t soon forget. He was with his daughters at the park just before 7:30 p.m. when he says he saw a man walk up to another man who was sitting on a bench and begin yelling at him.
“He was talking about his niece, how he disrespected his niece,” Benitez recalled. And, obviously, he was really upset. He was ready to fight. The guy, he was literally right there. The other guy, you could tell he was either scared or didn't want any problems.”
Sensing something was about to go down, Benitez pulled out his cell phone to record the video on Snapchat. That’s when Benitez says the man, who was sitting on the bench, pulled out a gun.
“By the time I started recording, I looked on my camera. I looked up and the guy had his gun out. And at that split second, I was like I need to get my daughter,” Benitez said. “I pick her up. I grab my stepdaughter and put them behind a concrete post and told them to stay there.”
According to Mansfield police, the man who had the gun is licensed to carry in the state of Texas. And after speaking to witnesses, investigators say he pointed the gun at the other man, who police are calling the "aggressor," after being lifted up from the bench and hit in the face and torso.
“That sounds about right because I know the guy that approached him, he was he was ready to do some damage,” Benitez said. “Like I said, that's why put on my phone because I knew there was gonna be a fight.”
Benitez says the victim continued to point the gun at the aggressor and his family members, who had gathered around as the victim walked backward trying to disengage from the situation. Witnesses called 911.
Benitez posted other videos of police arriving and a photo of him and his 2-year-old daughter, telling his friends who saw the alarming Snapchat video that they were okay.
“You just think the worst when that situation happens,” he said. “You don't know if he's gonna have a misfire or any kids are going to get hurt in the crossfire.”
Police say the aggressor took off before police got to the park. They're trying to locate him and intend to charge him with assault.

Man killed in St. Louis may have been shot in self-defense, police say
http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/c...e28b6c9cc.html
A man shot and killed early Monday in the Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood of St. Louis may have been killed in self-defense, police say.
The man, Pierre Sullivan, was shot in the 3200 block of Greer Avenue about 12:30 a.m. Monday, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said Sullivan had been in the area the day before, causing a disturbance and threatening to kill several people. Sullivan returned on Monday, and was pulling a gun from his waistband when a 30-year-old man shot him, authorities said.
The shooter stayed at the scene and turned his gun over to police. Several witnesses supported the shooter's version of events, police said.
Sullivan, 37, lived in the 4200 block of West Cook Avenue in St. Louis.
The investigation is ongoing, according to authorities

It's crazy how many self defense shooting occur on a regular basis. It's almost too easy to find examples. Here's a 3rd article from yesterday.
Arizona Homeowner Stunned by Home Intruder Fatally Shoots him in Self-Defense
https://bearingarms.com/jenn-j/2017/...ona-homeowner/
A suspected home intruder was shot and killed early Saturday evening after he chose the wrong home to break into.
The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said the suspected home intruder broke into a Kingman, AZ home near Roosevelt Street and Jagerson Avenue armed with a stun gun. When he encountered the homeowner at approximately 7:30 p.m., the suspect used the stun gun several times on the man and began robbing the home unimpeded.
What the suspect wasn’t counting on was that his victim would be able to defend himself. The homeowner was able to obtain a firearm and shot the home intruder in the process of burglarizing his home.
The homeowner called police to report the burglary and shooting. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police have not released the identity of the homeowner and confirm he has not been charged at this time. The incident is still being investigated but appears to be a clear-cut case of self-defense.

Teen robbery suspect shot dead in bank parking lot
Gunfire exchanged in bank parking lot
http://www.oakpark.com/News/Articles...k-parking-lot/
Oak Park police are continuing their investigation into an alleged robbery attempt on Saturday, May 27, that turned into a gun battle leaving Damon Phillips, a 16-year-old from Chicago, dead.
The teenager allegedly approached a 24-year-old Chicago man in the parking lot of the U.S. Bank at 11 Madison St., near the corner of Madison and Austin Boulevard, and allegedly tried to rob him at gunpoint.
Oak Park Police Chief Anthony Ambrose said the victim, who had a valid conceal-carry license and was armed with a semi-automatic weapon, was leaving the bank around 11:15 a.m. when he was approached.
The interaction erupted into gunfire and the man shot Phillips, who then fled the scene. "The pair apparently exchanged gunfire before the alleged robber reportedly entered a waiting car and fled into Chicago," according to a police statement.
Phillips was taken to Stroger Hospital by an unknown person, where he was pronounced dead.
An initial report noted that the two men exchanged gunfire, but Ambrose said investigators had not determined how many shots were fired from each weapon.
Ambrose said the investigation is now focused on whether others were involved in the robbery attempt and who transported Phillips to the hospital. "We know he obviously was with someone, so we're trying to locate that person and if there was more than one individual (involved)," he said.
He said investigators also are trying to determine whether Phillips has any gang affiliation or criminal history.
An initial report from the village government noted that an off-duty Chicago police officer in the area at the time of the shooting detained and questioned the 24-year-old victim. That person, whose name has not been released, was also interviewed by Oak Park police.
Ambrose said police plan to release more information later in the week as it becomes available.
They're urging anyone with information to call (708) 386-3800. Anyone who wants to place anonymous tips can call (708) 434-1636 or go online at www.oak-park.us/crimetip.

Re: Armed citizens making a difference thread.
let's do 2 for today. I don't think I posted this one. Another example of self defense in Illinois.
http://www.theblaze.com/news/2017/05...iscalculation/
Carjackers choose vehicle owner with concealed carry license. It’s a painful miscalculation.
A pair of men — one of them armed — approached a car owner standing outside his vehicle on the southwest side of Chicago in broad daylight May 10 and demanded his keys.
But police told the Chicago Tribune the victim wouldn’t hand over his keys.
See, he’s a concealed carry license holder, police told the paper — and he pulled out his own gun and started firing.
The vehicle owner shot one of the perps “in the groin area,” the Tribune reported. The other one took off running but was arrested shortly thereafter, the paper said.
The wounded suspect, 25, was taken to a hospital where he was listed in good condition, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford told the Tribune. The other perp’s age is unknown, the paper said.
Charges are pending against both suspects, police told the Tribune, adding that a weapon was recovered.
“It’s unclear if the victim lived in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred, but at least 429 residents have active concealed carry permits, according to the most recent statistics from the Illinois State police,” the paper noted.

Mugger Made A Huge Mistake Holding A Gun To The Head Of This Tiny Woman
A Glendale, Arizona woman was glad to have a pistol holstered to her hip when she was approached early Monday morning by an armed gunman intent on doing harm.
Carolann Miracle, a petite woman who stands at only 4 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 85 pounds, was leaving the Circle K gas station convenience store with her family, when the suspect, Frank Taylor (below), asked if he could have a cigarette and a lighter. After she told him she didn't have any, Taylor pulled a gun on her and her sister.
“He stuck the gun to my neck and said, ‘It’s loaded, bitch, don’t move,’” Miracle told KNXV. ”I think he thought, ‘She’s a little girl. Maybe she doesn’t know how to use her weapon.’”
Miracle, who's father was a Marine, said, “I dropped my soda, released my gun from my holster, cocked it and shot him. Then we ran the opposite way."
Not knowing if the strangers in the parking lot were with Taylor, she decided to run home and call the police from there.
"I feel bad, I didn’t mean to kill him," she said. "I feel bad for his mom. I feel bad because I just found out that he has a 1-week-old baby. I didn’t mean to do it, but I had to defend my sister and me."
Miracle told reporters she's very thankful that she is still here to celebrate her daughter's third birthday this week.
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is still reviewing the case to determine if Miracle will face any charges.

And a bloggers take on this incident.
http://gunwatch.blogspot.com/2016/08...ing-glock.html
A woman openly carrying a Glock was threatened by an armed felon in the early morning hours of 1 August, 2016. She was leaving the gas station with a drink in her hand and the Glock on her hip. Her daughter would be turning three in about a week. From abc15.com:
Miracle said she was leaving the Circle K near 59th Avenue and Camelback Road with her family early Monday morning when the suspect, Frank Taylor , tried to bum a cigarette. She told him that she didn’t have one, and then seconds later, Miracle said, she could feel the barrel of the gun against her skin.
“He put the gun up to my neck and said, ‘It’s loaded, don’t move,’” Miracle said. ”I think he thought, ‘She’s a little girl. Maybe she doesn’t know how to use her weapon.’”
Miracle said, “I dropped my soda, released my gun from my holster and cocked it. I shot him and ran in the opposite direction."
Carolann's father was a marine who taught her well.
There are several things to note about this encounter. Many elements of the story are items often found in armed robberies/muggings.
First is the approach. It is common for robbers/muggers to use a pretext to close the distance and distract the victim. Asking for a cigarret is a common pretext. So is asking for the time.
Second is picking what appeared to be weak prey. Carolann is a small woman, 4'11, 85 pounds. It is common for human predators to pick on weaker prey. Maybe he did not see the Glock on her hip. It was dark. She was holding a drink from the gas station, probably in her right hand. If she was wearing a dark top, as she was in the video, the Glock would not have presented much contrast. While open carriers tend to be very aware of their defensive firearm, many people never notice it.
Carolann did many things right. The first was to instantly recognize the threat. Many become mired in the thought that "this cannot be happening"; "this is not real". People who carry are much less likely to do that because they have considered the possibility of attack and prepared for it.
She did the right thing when she dropped her drink. Dropping things to access your weapon or to fight better is not an instinctive reaction. Many people instinctively hang on to useless things that impede their ability to fight. I taught my students to practice dropping things at the beginning of a fight so that they could draw their firearm, and fight more effectively.
She did the right thing when she fled the area in the opposite direction from the way the attacker was going. Many attacks, perhaps 50%, involve an accomplice. She purposefully made the decision, moved to safety, then called the police.
Carolann's response is common. She did not want to kill her attacker. It was a consequence of what he forced her to do. She would have preferred that it never happened.
There were witnesses and surveillance video, both of which backed up her story.
Carolann says she "cocked it". I suspect she was carrying Israeli style, in condition 3, with an empty chamber. If you practice pulling and releasing the slide as you draw, it can be fairly fast.
What did not happen.
Carolann was openly carrying. She was accosted by a violent, armed felon. He did not simply "shoot her first" as many who oppose open carry claim will happen. Even though he "had the drop" on her, she won the gun fight.
Action beats reaction. Dropping the drink likely gave her another second, as the felon probably thought "dropping drink" not "drawing gun".
It is a known gunfighter tactic that Louis L'Amore wrote about in one of his novels. In that case, the fictional character let a match burn down to his fingers from lighting a cigarette, thus conditioning his opponents to expect him to flick his hand away from the burn. Expecting that, they were surprised by the draw.
Maybe Carolann did not consciously make that decision; but the effect was similar.
Carolann Miracle; small woman, Marine's daughter, open carrier, mother, now, undesired, gunfighter. She survived and lived to see her daughter's third birthday.Last edited by internet troll; June 1st, 2017 at 01:35 PM.

Police: Shooting was self defense, woman released
http://wdtn.com/2017/05/08/police-on...t-dayton-mall/
MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) – The Miami Township Police held a news conference to discuss the shooting at the Dayton Mall Monday.
Police said the shooting has been ruled self-defense and the woman has been released. The man involved in the case was taken to the hospital but investigators say that man left his hospital sometime overnight and is believed to possibly be in Michigan.
The investigation will continue, according to police, to determine if the man should be charged with assault and kidnapping. Police say they are not searching for him yet but are still putting the case together. The case will be presented to a grand jury and if an indictment is secured, an arrest warrant for the man will be sought.
As of Monday night, police were not releasing the names of the people being questioned, but we do know the man and woman were a couple. A 911 caller reported seeing the man beating his girlfriend, who then started shooting the man, hitting him in the leg.
“We heard five shots go off,” Jay Day said who witnessed the shooting. “So, of course, we took off running.”
Shoppers ran for safety Monday outside the Dayton Mall after police say a woman opened fire on her boyfriend near their RV camper in the Sear’s parking lot.
Dispatch: “911, what’s the address of your emergency?”
Caller: “Yeah, I’m at the Dayton Mall and there’s a man beating a woman.”
Seconds later, the caller watched as the woman opened fire.
Caller: “He was, he was hitting her. Oh, she just shot him. Oh my gosh. Yes, she’s shooting at him. Yeah, you gotta send somebody like right away.”
According to police, the woman shot at her boyfriend 10 to 15 times. He was hit in the leg. Police say the couple is from out of state, and stopped to get supplies. They aren’t sure what sparked the fight.
“From what we can tell right now. We may end up having charges on both of them,” Miami Township Police Department Sgt. Paul Nienhaus said. “There are witnesses who corroborate stories together. Their stories would indicate there was some sort of assault by the male on the female.”
Police say the woman is currently in custody, likely to face charges. The man is recovering in the hospital and could also face charges.
“It’s just a bad situation,” Day said. “As soon as she heard the police sirens, before they were even on the property, she was laying on the ground with her hands over her head.”
The man is expected to be okay. We reached out to Sears for comment. We’re still waiting to hear back.
2 NEWS will continue to follow this story and keep you updated as we learn moreLast edited by internet troll; June 2nd, 2017 at 06:32 AM.
