How old is this rifle?????
I was just handed a .22LR by my wifes grandfather, her grandmother was here as well. This rifle apparently used to belong to my wife's grnadmother's hairdresser's husband. You follow that. Now, the hairdressers husband has since passed away, and the wife is being sent to a nursing home after a few years of living on her own. The rifle was found wrapped in cardboard in the bottom of an old foot locker. It was made by a company I've never heard of. And I have the SN, Pics to come later. There was also a few boxes of ammo, remington, federal, but its in boxes that apear to be somewhat aged. Again pics coming soon.
Anyway, It is a Wards Western Field Rifle
Partial Sn No-46-cs22-Lr. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: How old is this rifle?????
Western fields were made primarily by Mossberg and Savage. The date of the gun depends on which model it is. If you can tell me the model and the caliber i can give you the gun it crosses over to and the dates of manufacture.

Re: How old is this rifle?????
Sounds like it was a rifle sold by Montgomery Ward.
Is the 46 the model number?
If so WIKI has an answer:
The Wards Model 46 cross references to the Mossberg Model 42, Takedown, 22 lr,l,s, 7-shot detachable box magazine. 24" barrel. Weight 5 lbs. Pistol grip stock made to NRA specifications, 1.25" swivels. Chrome plated bolt, handle and trigger. No. 1A ramp front sight, No. S134 rear sight, No. 3 receiver sight. Made 1935-1937. Re: How old is this rifle?????
I took a second look at your s/n and it looks like the model number. If it is a model 46 that crosses over to a Mossberg 42 C or D in 22lr. They were manufactured between 1937-1941. As for the value the books has these values listed.
100%-$200
98%-$150
95%-$100
90%-$90
80%-$80
70%-$70
60%-$65
59% and below- Can be used as a tomato stake
These prices are per the "Blue Book Of Gun Values" (29th ed.)
Just as a note these guns in decent condition can bring a little more than book value. We sell a lot to people teaching their kids how to shoot. They aren't collectables but they do bring a fairly high demand.14OO N. HERMITAGE RD, HERMITAGE,PA 724-962-1776......STOP BY AND SEE US SOME TIME

Brown Bear: That magazine looks like a en-block clip for the Italian carcano military rifle. It shold hold 6 rounds of 6.5 or 7.35 Italian shells. It is a shame about the rust. You could try some 0000 steel wool and a light oil like kroil to take off some of the rust. How does the bore look?

egon;
The bore actually is not to bad. Almost looks like the last owner swabbed the ever loving heck out of the inside then slapped it in the box and forgot about it.
If thats not the magazine for this rifle, anybody know where I can get one?
This is def my next project. I want to clean it, remove the rust, and restain the wood to nice dark cherry or something.

Numrich has them...unfortunately it is $42!!

You may also want to contact Jacks First Gunshop....they don't have an online catalog but if you call them they will help out..good folks I have used them before.

Popperts is showing the magazine for $35...for a 44B and 44S..but they should be the same...I would e-mail them.

Personally I would fix it up and spend the money, these .22's are usually very good shooters and pretty accurate. As far as the rust, like was mentioned, 0000 steel wool and oil, if it bugs you you may want to cold blue it, or if you have an airbrush, duracoat or guncote it.
