Heh. The only time I ever had a problem was back when you had to provide it.
It was only a short delay - the FFL got on the phone and verified I was who I said I was to them.
Seems the state had my SSN on file with one number that was wrong.

The people on the phone had him relay to me to go to the driver's license center and get my info corrected.
    (pretty sure that's how I did it - it's been 20 years)

I left with my firearm - wasn't put into research.

After that I stopped providing the SSN once it was no longer required.

Probably couldn't hurt to include the last four digits - if that is permitted.
I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Sure, but the SSN "issue" has never been about them knowing who you are.
People have their SSN stolen and misused all the time, so it is a security risk for individuals. That's why the fight to remove it as a requirement started.

I give my last four. That's what matters and is what the ffl will get back anyways, even if you write the whole thing out. Just like you said it's more for security than anything else. I've got enough 4473's on file, I don't think I'm hiding anything from the .gov anymore.
