45-70 vs ? for 0-150 yds for all around use.
Whats your favorite carbine/rifle/shotgun for up close and personal to 150 yds in the woods? Looking for hard hitting rounds only.
I'm leaning towards a JM stamped 45-70 unless I decide on a decent Big Loop "new ownership" model; though first, I'd like to hear other's field stories and ballistic experiences with this caliber and any other worthy bullet type that are comparable.
Let's hear some tales of taking game (expected or unexpected) from hogs to grizz and beyond.

.30-06 is my favorite all around gun for hunting in PA. I did shoot a whitetail with a .458 Win Mag with 325 grain soft points once mostly just to be able to say I did. It ran about 100 yards before crashing leaving a blood trail a bare footed blind man could follow. Hit the shoulder meat on the off side, the meat was not bloodshot at all. You could literally eat right up to the hole.

You hit Superdeer or something? I'd have figured a few yds at best. That's disappointing with that round. Didn't strike any bones?

No worries....
No bone, didn't want to hit bone. The bullet goes too slow to produce hydrostatic shock. Passed right through more or less like an arrow with a field point. Basically penetrated as they're designed to do. Had I aimed for the shoulder I'm sure the results would have been different.2021 PMSC/PAFOA Group shoot dates here https://forum.pafoa.org/showthread.php?t=366923

358 Win. in a Savage 99. 200 gr Hornady spire points. I shot a buck that was 'bouncing' through the woods, caught him at the top of his leap. He literally flipped ass over tincups and landed in his last set of tracks. Another one, I was shooting from above, the bullet entered the neck/shoulder junction on the right side and he dropped in his tracks. I later found the bullet in the left rear hindquarter. Back when I hunted bear, that was the one that went to the woods with me. I'm comfortable with using it out to 250 yds or a bit more.

Doubt many more critters large or small have fallen to any other lever-gun round than the 30-30 or .35 Remington inside 150yds.

All around use I'll take a 308. I just bought a 45-70 to use for hunting bear, i like it's performance out to 150 but I also like the ability to be able to make much longer shots.
I have shot deer with both 308 and 45-70 and both did their job.

^^^ THIS ^^^
For the OP's criteria out to 150 yds in PA woods, the 35 Remington in a nice, used, JM stamped Marlin 336 is the ticket, and a lot less expensive than a Marlin 1895 in 45-70.
The factory 200 gr jacketed lead flat nose will do whatever needs to be done.
