Hunting rifle purchase question...
I am going to try my first deer hunt this fall. As of now, I don't have a rifle suitable for deer hunting in PA. I was considering borrowing a friend's slug barrel for my Rem 870, but I recently stumbled across a deal on a new in box Winchester Model 70, synthetic stock, .270 Win caliber, with Bushnell 3-9 scope for $400.
If I don't like the "hunt", I figure I can sell the rifle to get my money out. What I am wondering is if the $400 is a good price for that rifle? Comments please? Thanks.

Re: Hunting rifle purchase question...
Can't comment on the deal but if you are hunting in Allegheny county you can not use it. Allegheny county is a special regulation area and you must use a shotgun or muzzleloader. I'm just mentioning that since you indicted that you are new to hunting.
BTW I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.Last edited by 41 Redhawk; September 2nd, 2008 at 02:29 PM. Reason: To add info

I would consider that good if it's a Model 70 Classic.

I agree Lycan, it sounds like a hell of a deal on a model 70. I assure you that even if you didn't or couldn't use that rifle to hunt with in your county, you could definately get your money back out of it.

Re: Hunting rifle purchase question...
Thanks for the feedback guys. I am planning to go hunting in Ohiopyle State Game lands (not Allegheny county) with some coworkers. I have to see this rifle in person yet, but if its as good as I have been reading lately, it will be hard to pass up. Thanks for the feedback!!!
I wish I could hunt with it in Allegheny county.... I see a couple deer daily outside my place.

Re: Hunting rifle purchase question...
Yeah if its a classic and not a knock-off. A .270 is good for deer, but If I was gonna buy/have only 1 hunting rifle it would be the 30-06. Hits a little heavier, and is capable of taking most any of the big game animals in North America.

ETA;
Sorry I was confusing the weapon you soke of with a Remington 700 CDL. 400 is a good price for the Winchester 270. I stand by my comment on the 30-06.Last edited by Brown-Bear; September 3rd, 2008 at 08:28 PM.

Don't know what he meant by "knock off" but I would do it. Good round lots of different ammo for it. Sounds like a good price for a pkg gun. I bought that same pkg in 7mm Rem Mag. Have had it for years no problem. -BB

Re: Hunting rifle purchase question...
What he means is if it's a FN model 70, or a "classic" Winchester Model 70 made by Winchester. The Winchester company shut down, and then FN bought the rights to the model 70 and started producing them again, under their name for the precision rifles (with tighter tolerances) and also under the Winchester name. I believe that's the reference that he's making. Either way, I've heard that they're still made in the US if it makes you feel any better.
