Deer gun... HELP!
I want to kill deer.
I have "narrowed" it down to a few calibers:
.270
.300wsm
7mm mag
30-06
Realistically, my shots will be under 300 yards (I am going to be hunting on my uncle's property this year and all his buddies said that their shots are usually 200-300 yards). My uncle said that .270 is his preferred cartridge, however, other friends of his have sworn by 30-06 and his son uses .300wsm.
I am really having a huge debate in my head about which caliber would be the best, but I want to be able to use it for more than just deer, if possible. I would never hunt bear, I suppose the largest animal I would hunt would be elk, so I have been leaning towards .300wsm, but I don't want the deer I shoot with the mag cartridges to explode.
Oh internet, what ever am I going to do?
(Oh yeah, I am leaning towards a used Winchester 70 Featherweight because they are beautiful and amazing)

Re: Deer gun... HELP!
The 30.06 is probably one of the best "ALL AROUND" guns made.... lots of different bullet weight choices and can easily handle everything from coyotes up to elk.... I LOVE my 30.06 and you can always find shells no matter where you go.. whereas some of the others may be more difficult to locate... The .270 and 7mm may have a flatter trajectory for longer ranges but since you probably will be doing most of your hunting under 300 yards the 30.06 would be my choice....
Lots of different opinions out there.. but this is mine...

Re: Deer gun... HELP!
Personally, I myself would go with the .270 or 30-06. not the that others are bad, but I'm a huge fan of the .270.
It's a great deer cartridge.

Re: Deer gun... HELP!
I Think I may go with the .30-06 just because of the option of going with bigger game. But who knows, all I know is that I have to make my decision quickly, deer season is fast approaching and I have a lot of saving up to do (oh how the thought of a 700ish dollar gun and a 400+ dollar scope scare me)./

Re: Deer gun... HELP!
None of those calibers will "blow up" a deer when using the right bullet.
The .300 WSM would be best suited to elk and longer range shooting...with the 7mm a close second.
The .30-06 is a great all around caliber and always will be.
The .270 is light recoiling and acccurate and perfect for deer. A bit light for elk unless you use a bonded bullet.

How about the 7.62x54r round from the mosin nagant rifles? I heard it's the russian equivalent of the 30-06?

Re: Deer gun... HELP!
I have to put my vote behind the 30-06 also. Its a rock solid round which works very very well.
The first vehicles normally on the scene of a crime are ambulances and police cruisers. If you are armed you have a chance to decide who gets transported in which vehicle, if you are not armed then that decision is made for you.
Be prepared, because someone else already is and no one knows their intent except them.

270 wsm great round for deer, fast flat with plenty of knock down power. You can also use it on Elk with the proper bullet and shot placement. The 300wsm is another good round. Good for lots of critters. You don`t have to worry about blowing up the animal if you use right ammo. As a matter of fact you want all of the energy from the bullet put into not exiting the animal. 30-06 great old caliber has killed many an animal and ammo is cheap. Ammo for the 270 and 300wsm are expensive but when you hunt give the animal some respect.
