    Default Which 1911?

I want to help someone out who is looking to get there first 1911. They prefer stainless steel, and they seem to be leaning toward a Kimber. Springfield and Colt comes to mind. Nothing real pricey, maybe around the $700 range is preferred. For a lower price, anyone have experience with a Rock Island? What 1911 makers are recommended, any mentioned here or others?

Sorry to say, you will not find a New Colt or Kimber at that price point. That said, you will find the Springfield Armory Range Officer's in 45 & 9mm, just above $700. Others would include RIA and similar guns made in the Philipinnes. Good Luck!

I think the Springfield RO is probably the best (maybe only?) choice as well.

I have a SA Fully Loaded Stainless Steel 1911. I bought it a few years ago, and I paid slightly north of $800 for it. Great entry level 1911.

It's going to be tough finding a new 1911's from the manufacturers you listed at the $700 price point especially in stainless steel.

While I do not own a Rock Island, I have a friend who has one with no complaints. You'd have no problem finding a new RI in your price range. Their nickel plated one is a nice looking gun. (There's a picture of one laying on gravel which appears every now and then in this forum.)

Look at the Ruger SR1911 or the Ruger SR1911CMD both are stainless steel and right near or under that price point. Rock Island Armory is also a viable 1911 with a pretty good price.

as a 1911 addict, I went with Springfield. main reason is warranty.

granted, I have never needed a warranty repair on any springer I ever owned, however, it was nice to have.

colt's warranty blew goat. I currently own one, and, am kinda surprised. the last new colt I bought was such a p.o.s., I swore them off. (the current stainless xse required some dehorning, as it had enough sharp edges that I could shave with it.

I love my Kimber, and, the last Kimber I had as well (first one was a turd, but, it was an old Clackamas, so , I attributed it to that fact.

I did, have to tune the extractor on the eclipse...won't lie. however, she's a pleasure to shoot., and, unlike the colt delta, is not ammo finicky.

my trp is almost boring to shoot. accurate as hell, reliable beyond words. so, I am still saying Springfield armory all the way.

Palmetto State is offering a 1911 for $600 right now. I don't know anything about their 1911 but the company usually gets good reviews on their products.

I vote for Ruger. I have an SR1911 full size and a Lightweight CMD. Both are excellent guns for just under the $700 price point.

They are both just as high quality of the Springfield 1911 I also own that cost $200 more.

I voted Kimber hoping I'd learn where to buy them at that price.

I didn't vote (yet) but If you can buy a Kimber at that price, buy it. The Springfield is also a good pistol, Colt is really just a name now... there are several "no name" 1911's that are very good service pistols at this price point, that are good combat pistols, but kimber is one of the best (in my opinion).
